Today's interview is with Kaaboos, a Norwegian band formed by Atash in 2020 and released their debut EP “Leviathan” in 2022. 2024 saw the release of their debut album “Anti-Cosmic Rebellion”, which impressed me with its intense and ferocious riffs, perfectly illustrating the rawness of black metal. riffs, which perfectly illustrate the most primitive feeling of black metal. Meanwhile, things are not looking good for Atash at the moment. The magazine contacted Atash for an interview.
(V: for the author A: for Atash)

采访对象:Atash(Kaaboos乐队创始人)
Hello, Atash! Thank you for accepting this interview. You are a new-born band from Iran. So, could you introduce your band to Chinese black metal fans? When was this band formed and why do you want to play this music?
Hello, thank you for having this interview with me! Kaaboos is a solo Black Metal band that began its journey during May 2022 in Sandefjord, Norway. Musically, it presented the collective work and experiences I have had as a self-taught musician, a path that began in the beginning of 2019 with my passion for playing the drums and the inspirations that came with it. It was really the first time that I got to experience for myself the feelings, thoughts and emotions it can invoke in an individual when playing, and that it isn’t just about performing on an instrument. A fresh side and perspective of the music I have been listening to for years prior to started taking shape in me, and Kaaboos came to be the part that expresses these personal experiences I have had with it. The theme of Kaaboos is of views on the world we live in, and anti-religious ideologies. In Anti-Cosmic Rebellion it was to emphasize targeting Islam, and parts of the album was to be served as a threat against this oppressive religion. Especially with how such “divine symbols” are represented and referred to within the regime of my home country, Iran.
You released your Full-length album “Anti-Cosmic Rebellion”, which is fierce and attacking. What makes it impressive is your raw but complicated riffs. What do you think of your work? And how do you record your materials?
A: “Anti-Cosmic Rebellion”是Kaaboos的垫脚石。
Anti-Cosmic Rebellion is the appropriate steppingstone for Kaaboos. There are parts of the album that came as a result of just pure experimentation, and this is exactly what highlighted the way I approach it now, also how I will direct its sound onwards. I’ve mentioned before that the debut album for Kaaboos was supposed to be released about a year or two before this, but my composition and approach was already taking a new direction which became Anti-Cosmic Rebelion. But after all, it is all a portrayal of thoughts and beliefs, in an artistic manner of course, and that it is as honest of an album that I can bring out of myself. I don’t want to censor what I have to say or to be in the pursuit of constructing a “perfect” album, and there are reasons to why this is the genre that Kaaboos is under. I record all the guitars at home, it is only the vocals that are done in a studio. Or at least this is how it was for Anti-Cosmic Rebellion and every demo I record.
You are a personal project, and you can write your music what you want. Could you share your composing process to us?
It usually starts with improvisation, until a riff comes up that is of a certain sound, or again, I feel is setting place its own atmosphere. Within that atmosphere I write more of the riffs along the same path until I get everything I can out of it. Then the drum patterns are written in a way that it serves as the pillars of the songs structure. Quite rarely I sit down with the intent to write a song, although I have gotten great results out of this. But it mainly happens when in the moment I have something in me that naturally gets reflected on a riff I’m playing. An instrumental song should be able to portray something of its own, and it isn’t at first solely reliant on the lyrics. I let the song express itself, and based on that and other factors in consideration, the lyrics is written for the track.
I found that you are fighting with your country because of the lack of freedom. And it seems that something bad is happening. So, could you tell me something about that?
Iran is being ruled over by the Islamic Republic regime. Islam alone is a very oppressive and strict religion. When I think about it now, just like how I see it with most other religions but more severe, is that it creates a lifelong slave out of people. And the regime in Iran bases almost everything on this, with their own adjustments, forced ideologies and legal restrictions with intense immoral punishments, including death. I was noticed by a group that works for the government right after the release of Leviathan in May 2022, sending me my full address in Iran and threatening to take my life or hurt my family. We hear about similar stories more than often, but to be faced with it personally is nothing short of a terrifying experience. Symbolically, it seemed that the birth of Kaaboos had turned into a real “Nightmare”. I had to apply for asylum in Norway, where I was residing when all of this happened, and still am. In the midst of the dangers against my life involved in this, I was denied by Norway, and they are trying to throw me out back to Iran. An event which I’m not sure even they are able imagine what it would result in. This changed my perspective on how I see the world we’re in. Everything that is happening in Iran right now is of my concern, for the sake of our people's safety and sanity, and myself being targeted and on the verge of deportation.
So what do you want to express in your lyric? What are your musical themes and why do you choose these themes?
The lyrics are mostly of darkness, Satanism and events of the world’s destruction. With Anti-Cosmic rebellion there are anti-religious topics discussed, some mainly to target Islam like Qasam Be Shaytan, and Al-Fatihah (The Beginning) which is the first Surah of the Quran but inverted. And Mesmerized is of its own theme compared to the rest of the album, mainly based around an atheistic and somewhat naturalistic perspective on death. Regardless of the philosophical factors within these topics, this is also a subject of fascination for me personally and of which I can relate to and have a lot to say within, considering my upbringing experiences in Iran. One can always find a sort of valuable knowledge or perspective in it.
Your music reminds me of some bands, like Behexen. You are both raw and fierce. So, is there any bands that you very like or that influence your work? What is your favorite bands?
It’s difficult to specifically point out where my inspirations come from because it can be from many different bands, or even things that aren’t related to music, at least not directly. Many things that I experience, see or think can ultimately have a reflection on the music. Whether it’s music itself, a specific movie, other forms of art, thoughts and opinions on the world, or even places I like to visit around which has history or parts of the woods I like to be in. The bands that I listen to can sometimes depend. But bands like Aura Noir, Taake, Dissection, Mayhem and Watain are just among some of the many bands I go back to. The list could go on. Among all of them, Ruïm “Blasphemer” is the guitarist that I guess I get quite a lot of inspiration from within music. I enjoy listening to most albums he has done the songwriting for. Especially hearing a fresh and dynamical album like Ruïm’s Black Royal Spiritism in its entirety for the first time, which instantly reserved a spot for one of my favorite records. There is a somewhat old-school like approach with a modern sound in that record that caught my interest from the very first moment. I highly recommend the Black Metal fans to check it out if they haven’t.
Do you have any plans in this year?
First and foremost, to stay safe in a land where I have no rights in anymore and that I fear I could get thrown out of to face what could possibly lead to the end of my journey. And what might potentially result in becoming the next Kaaboos album is under work at the moment. It shall be announced whenever the time for it comes, perhaps we will be able to have a few live shows before that.
In the last of the interview, do you want to say something to Chinese black metal music fans?
Cheers!

Thank you for tuning into this interview. It is crucial (in today’s world especially) to be able to see the reality we are in, and to acknowledge and understand everything that our world is going through. I can only wonder why we still struggle with freedom (of speech specifically) and why a regime like in Iran could step in place. But what I can think of is that certain things don’t seem to be going towards the right direction, and it’s only a matter of time for us to see where we end up. Our debut album Anti-Cosmic Rebellion is available on Kaaboos’ Spotify and Bandcamp, and YouTube via “Iblis Manifestations”, and you can also follow up with my profile on Instagram @kaaboos.atash
