今天采访到的是来自葡萄牙的Death Metal乐队Carnificina,组建于1995年的Carnificina乐队由Ve-R-ee Ax,Melkor,D-Void,The Beyonder四名成员组建,在经过长时间的创作之后乐队在2011年发行了第一张EP专辑“Portuguese Massmurder Memorabilia”这张专辑深受Old School Death Metal风格的影响,整齐,凶狠的Riff,快速,精准的鼓点,凶狠的演唱,让这张专辑受到了很多歌迷的关注和好评,虽然这张专辑在录音方面有一些缺陷,但是乐队的创始人之一Melkor重新录制了这张专辑,让这张专辑重新获得了新的活力,在前不久杂志与乐队的创始人Melkor取得联系进行了一次专访!

Today's interview is with Carnificina, a Portuguese Death Metal band formed in 1995 by Ve-R-ee Ax, Melkor, D-Void, and The Beyonder. After a long period of creative work, the band released their first EP in 2011. The album “Portuguese Massmurder Memorabilia” was heavily influenced by the Old School Death Metal style, with neat, vicious riffs, fast, precise drums, and ferocious vocals, which made the album received a lot of attention and critical acclaim from fans. Although there were some flaws in the recording of the album, Melkor, one of the founders of the band, re-recorded the album and gave it a new lease of life. Not long ago, the magazine contacted Melkor for an interview!

Hello Melkor nice to see you again, this time I'm going to interview the band Carnificina which you are involved in, this band was formed in 1995 and it's an old band with a long history, how did you get involved in this band in the first place?

Hey! Great to be here again. Carnificina is actually where everything started for me - it was my very first band. I had only been playing guitar for a few months when I was invited to start this band back in 1995. We were young, raw, and just wanted to make noise, aggressive, dirty, violent noise. The band lasted around a year, and after that, everyone went their separate ways. Years later, I started thinking about those old days, the spirit, the chaos, and I decided to bring some of it back. I gathered the few riffs I still remembered, rewrote and rearranged what I could, and turned it into the EP Portuguese Massmurder Memorabilia. Since I had no idea what the original lyrics were, we created completely new ones for this studio version, absurd, sarcastic, grotesque, and deeply rooted in Portuguese underground culture. This time, it’s not really a band in the traditional sense, it’s more of a studio resurrection with a new lineup, just for the sake of putting this twisted piece of history into recorded form. It’s violent nostalgia with a healthy dose of black humor.

The band was formed by you, The Beyonder, D-Void, Ve-R-ee Ax, you're all first generation members and know each other well enough to know what each other needed to create, can you describe your creative process?

Not exactly, the original Carnificina was actually formed back in 1995 by Bruno, Rute, and Ginjas. I joined in the very early days when I had barely started playing guitar, and we just let the madness flow. That first version of the band didn’t last long, but it left its mark on me. Fast forward a couple of decades, and I decided it was time to exhume the corpse of Carnificina and give it one final scream. For this resurrection, I handpicked a killer lineup for the studio version of the EP. I recorded all the rhythm guitars and programmed the drums myself to keep the raw essence alive. Then I reached out to Ve-R-ee Ax, who laid down some filthy, distorted basslines that gave the songs the gut-punch they needed. Once the foundations were solid, I contacted Beyonder - a beast with words, and he took care of all the lyrics and vocals. He brought a perfect balance of brutality and sarcasm to the tracks. And to top it all off, the magnificent D-Void came in with those blistering solos. His style added a layer of chaos and precision that was exactly what I wanted. The process was fast, instinctive, and totally unfiltered, just like Carnificina should be. Everyone brought their best, and we didn’t overthink it. It’s not about perfection, it’s about attitude, and this EP reeks of it.

The original version of the album was released in 2011 and the recorded version wasn't perfect at the time, but you re-recorded the album in 2024 and the new version is a great recording, can you describe the process of re-recording the album?

Yeah, the original version came out in 2011, and while the spirit was there, the sound wasn’t. Back then, I didn’t really have the knowledge or the tools to get the guitars or the overall mix sounding the way I wanted. It always bothered me, especially because the songs deserved so much more. So in 2024, I decided it was time to do Carnificina justice. The process was pretty straightforward: I kept the original structure and performances from the other members, but I re-recorded all the rhythm guitars from scratch to give them the heaviness and bite they were missing. I also revamped the drum sounds, updated the EQ and mix on the bass and vocals, and just gave everything a proper sonic facelift. The foundations were solid, we already had a killer EP, but the presentation wasn’t right. I finally had the skills to fix it, and I didn’t want this release to fade into obscurity because of poor production. Now, it sounds the way it always should’ve: raw, heavy, and mean.

Your band's logo is beautifully designed, who designed this logo for you, and your album artwork is simple, but very much in line with the death metal genre, who designed this logo for you?

The Carnificina logo was designed by none other than Christophe Szpajdel - The Lord of the Logos. He’s a true master when it comes to capturing the essence of a band just through lines and shapes. When I approached him, I explained that this was an old-school death metal project with roots going back to the '90s, and he immediately understood the vision. What he delivered was exactly what the band needed: raw, sharp, and straight to the point, like our music. As for the artwork, I kept it intentionally minimalistic. I didn’t want anything overly elaborate, just something that channels the old-school vibe and reflects the primitive, aggressive spirit of the music. It’s all about staying true to that underground death metal aesthetic, and I think both the logo and the cover work together perfectly to represent that.

V: 你们乐队的音乐主题是什么,为什么选择这个主题,想通过它表达什么?歌词部分也是你们创作的,这些歌词是谁写的,灵感来源是什么?
What is your band's music theme about, why did you choose it, and what do you want to express through it? You also created the lyrics section, who wrote these lyrics and what was his inspiration?
M: Carnificina将Death和Thrash Metal原始地融合在一起,没有噱头,没有修饰,只有纯粹的侵略性。音乐快速、暴力、未经过滤,因此主题也必须与这种能量相匹配。我们探索残酷、犯罪和现实的阴暗角落。这不仅仅是为了震撼,而是为了直面真实、丑陋和经常被忽视的东西。歌词完全由Beyonder创作。他的灵感来自现实生活,来自我们身边扭曲的现实。其中两首曲子,即开头和结尾,是调侃、嘲讽和纯粹的混乱,但其他曲子则严肃得多。它们取材于发生在葡萄牙的真实案件,这些案件都留下了深深的伤痕。贝扬德潜心研究这些故事,并以残酷的抒情方式将其还原。正是这种讽刺与恐怖之间的对比,赋予了这张EP独特的基调。
Carnificina delivers a raw blend of death and thrash metal, no gimmicks, no polish, just pure aggression. The music is fast, violent, and unfiltered, so the themes had to match that energy. We explore brutality, crime, and the darker corners of reality. It’s not just about shock value, it’s about confronting what’s real, ugly, and often ignored. The lyrics were written entirely by The Beyonder. His inspiration came from real life, from the twisted reality around us. Two of the tracks, the opener and the closer, are tongue-in-cheek, complete mockery and pure chaos, but the others are far more serious. They’re based on real crimes that happened in Portugal, actual cases that left deep scars. Beyonder dove into those stories and brought them back with a brutal lyrical edge. It’s that contrast, between satire and horror, that gives this EP its unique tone.

Your original 2011 album was released on CD on the label Supergoat Wreck-Hordes, but the label announced its closure, can you tell us a bit about the label? Was the new version of the album released on your label or digitally?

Unfortunately, the original version of the Carnificina EP was never released on CD, despite the plans back in 2011. However, Supergoat Wreck-Hordes, my own virtual label, was the platform where I first published it digitally, and it has remained active ever since. Contrary to some rumours, I never officially shut it down. It’s always been there, silently holding all my musical releases over the years. The new 2024 re-recording was also released through Supergoat Wreck-Hordes, staying loyal to the same underground spirit. The label exists more as a digital hub for all the bands and projects I’m involved in. It gives me full creative freedom to publish whenever I want, however I want, without needing to wait for approval or deal with bureaucracy. It’s a DIY platform built out of passion, not profit, and that’s exactly what Carnificina represents.

The album “Portuguese Massmurder Memorabilia” is very much influenced by the old school death metal style, with great riffs, excellent arrangements and every detail is excellent, what do you think about this album?

Honestly, I'm really proud of Portuguese Massmurder Memorabilia. It might sound cliché, but this release means a lot to me, not just because of the music, but because of the history behind it. These songs came from a time when I was just starting out. I had barely been playing guitar for a few months when Carnificina first came to life in 1995. It was raw, it was chaotic, but it had something real, and I never wanted that to be forgotten. Musically, it’s pure old school death/thrash. No gimmicks, no overproduction. Just riffs with bite, violent grooves, and an honest approach to extreme metal. With the 2024 version, I finally got to hear these songs the way I always imagined them, tight rhythm guitars, punchy drums, and each element sitting properly in the mix. I didn’t want to modernize the sound too much, just polish what was already there. It's also a celebration of friendship and respect. Having Beyonder, Ve-R-ee Ax and D-Void on board made everything more meaningful. Each one added something unique, and together we gave these old songs new life. This album might have been born from memories, but it stands strong today as a brutal and uncompromising statement.

V: Carnificina已经很久没有发行新作品了,你有计划在2025年为这支乐队发行新作品吗?
It's been a long time since Carnificina released any new material, do you have any plans to release a new work for this band in 2025?
M: 如果发生了,那就发生了。Carnificina对我来说一直是一个非常私人的项目,我从不勉强,事实上至少有一首老歌没有被收录进这张EP,我还保留着一些当时的乐曲构思......那时候一切都比较简单,设备、录音、生活,都是原始的草图。有一天我想做一些真正纪念那个时代的作品。不是试图完美复制,而是引导同样的精神,不做过多思考,只演奏感觉正确的东西。那时我们不在乎潮流或完美。我们所追求的是激情,是那种想要创造出重磅作品的冲动。老实说如果我能回到那个时代,我一定会义无反顾。是的2025年还没有具体计划,但Carnificina仍在呼吸。如果时机合适,也许会有新的东西从阴影中出现。
If it happens, it happens. Carnificina has always been a very personal project for me, and I’ve never forced anything with it. There’s actually at least one old song that didn’t make it onto the EP, and I still have a few riff ideas from back then… raw sketches from a time when everything was simpler, gear, recording, life. One day, I’d like to do something that truly honours that era. Not by trying to replicate it perfectly, but by channeling that same spirit, no overthinking, just playing what feels right. Back then, we didn’t care about trends or perfection. It was all about passion and that urge to create something heavy. And honestly, if I could go back to that time, I would without thinking twice. So yeah, no concrete plans for 2025, but Carnificina is still breathing. And if the time feels right, something new might emerge from the shadows.
