恐怖电影之丧尸之地 - 美国Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore乐队Mortician专访

美国的乐队一直都是非常具有开创性的，从早期的Death，Possessed开创了Death Metal这种音乐风格，再到Morbid Angel‌，Obituary这类阴暗派的死亡金属乐队，还有像Autopsy‌这类将恐怖氛围提升到一个新的高度得乐队，还有Monstrosity，Deicide，Skinless，‌Dying Fetus，Suffocation‌，Cannibal Corpse‌，Massacre‌，Exhumed等等乐队都是非常具有美国代表性的乐队，其中还有一支乐队是所有喜欢美国Death Metal歌迷不可能遗忘的乐队，他们就是Mortician，组建于1989年的Mortician乐队最初由贝斯 / 歌手的Will和鼓手Matt组建，最初乐队的名字叫做Casket，后来他们创作了第一首歌曲Mortician之后便更名为Mortician，这个名字也成为了乐队最终的名字。在乐队组建的初期，鼓手Matt就因为吸毒和缺乏责任感而离队，新加入的吉他手Roger对鼓的编程也非常精通，从此以后乐队便一直使用鼓软件进行创作，乐队的风格Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore，由于乐队成员对恐怖电影非常感兴趣，所以乐队在歌曲当中使用了大量的恐怖片的采样片段。由于使用鼓机，这也让Mortician的歌曲冰冷，为情，流露出一种恐怖的氛围，这也让当时很多歌迷一致好评，也成为了当时美国本土最受欢迎的乐队之一，随后乐队与美国著名厂牌Relapse Records合作发行了多张专辑，也成为了Relapse Records厂牌发行当中最畅销的乐队，与Relapse Records合作完成之后乐队并没有与其他的厂牌合作，而是选择开创了自己的厂牌Mortician Records，掌握了发行权，2016年乐队发行了一张DVD作品“Ghoulish Gigs”之后再也没有任何新的作品发表，目前乐队致力于各类音乐节的演出，虽然乐队目前没有任何新的作品，但是与Will的聊天当中得知其实Mortician乐队一直都在创作新的歌曲，只是一直没有发布，真的很期待Mortician乐队新的作品问世，还有一个小插曲就是Incantation乐队主唱John在效力Mortician的时候，Will是Incantation乐队的主唱，Will不仅仅创建了自己的乐队，还在美国创建了一家俱乐部为美国以及全世界的金属歌迷创建了一个互相沟通，认识的空间，在前不久杂志也是与Will本人取得联系进行了一次专访！

American bands have always been highly innovative. From early pioneers like Death and Possessed, who pioneered the death metal genre, to dark-themed death metal bands such as Morbid Angel and Obituary, as well as bands like Autopsy that took the atmosphere of horror to new heights, and others like Monstrosity, Deicide, and Skinless, Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Massacre, Exhumed, and many others—all highly representative of American death metal. Among them is one band that no fan of American death metal could ever forget: Mortician. Formed in 1989, Mortician was originally founded by bassist/vocalist Will and drummer Matt. The band was initially named Casket, but after writing their first song, “Mortician,” they changed their name to Mortician, which became the band’s permanent name. Early in the band’s history, drummer Matt left due to drug use and a lack of responsibility. The new guitarist, Roger, was highly skilled in drum programming, and from then on, the band consistently used drum software in their compositions. Their style is Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore. Because the band members were deeply interested in horror films, they incorporated numerous samples from horror movies into their songs. The use of drum machines gave Mortician’s songs a cold, emotionless quality that exuded a terrifying atmosphere. This earned them widespread acclaim from fans at the time and established them as one of the most popular bands in the United States. The band subsequently partnered with the renowned American label Relapse Records to release multiple albums, becoming one of the label’s best-selling acts. After concluding their collaboration with Relapse Records, the band chose not to sign with other labels but instead founded their own label, Mortician Records, to retain control over their releases. Following the 2016 release of their DVD “Ghoulish Gigs,” the band has not released any new material. Currently, the band is focused on performing at various music festivals. Although they have no new material at the moment, a conversation with Will revealed that Mortician has actually been writing new songs all along—they just haven’t released them yet. I’m really looking forward to Mortician’s new material. Another interesting tidbit is that when Incantation’s vocalist John was signed to Mortician, Will was the vocalist for Incantation. Will not only founded his own band but also established a club in the U.S. to create a space for metal fans across America and the world to connect and get to know one another. Recently, the magazine also reached out to Will himself for an exclusive interview!

Hello Will, it's a pleasure to meet you and thank you so much for joining us for this interview. I believe this is your band's first interview with a Chinese magazine. First, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. Mortician was formed in 1989 and is a long-standing, veteran band. How did you originally come together to form the band? When you first started, you were called Casket. Not long after, you changed your name to Mortician. Why did you decide to switch names? Did you release any material during the Casket era?

W: 嘿，老兄，谢谢你发来的采访，也向中国乐迷问好，非常感谢大家的支持！是的，我们已经活跃了37年，太疯狂了哈哈。没错，起初我们曾暂时叫“Casket”，但因为我们写的第一首歌，后来改名为“Mortician”，不过也就只有最初那三首歌而已

V: 你们乐队的阵容一直只有你和Roger两人。当然在此之前，Incantation乐队的John McEntee和Matt Sicher曾加入过乐队，但John McEntee后来离开了，而Matt Sicher则意外离世。你能谈谈这些成员是如何加入乐队的吗？关于Matt Sicher你能简要介绍一下这位成员吗？

Your band's lineup has consistently remained just you and Roger. Of course, prior to that, Incantation's John McEntee and Matt Sicher joined the band, but John McEntee left the band, and Matt Sicher passed away unexpectedly. Could you talk about how these members joined the band? Matt Sicher—could you briefly introduce this member?

W: Matt Sicher曾是乐队的原鼓手，但遗憾的是他于1994年去世了。在那之后，我协助了Incantation乐队，而John则协助了Mortician乐队，大约持续了一年，直到我们确定了稳定的阵容。

matt sicher was original drumnmer but sadly passed away in1994 i helped out incantation and john helped out mortician for about a year till we got stable members

Your band has consistently maintained a two-member lineup, and I believe this makes the creative process quite convenient since you can compose songs entirely according to your own vision. Could you describe your songwriting process?

W: 我们之所以那样做，是因为Matt离世了／Roger大约在1993/1994年左右开始使用鼓机编程，以便跟上歌曲创作的进度，但在现场演出时，我们是三人组合

we only did that cause of matts passing me/roger started using the drum programming around 1993/1994 to keep up with writing songs but live we are a 3 piece

V: 血腥、死亡、暴力、恐怖电影——这些都是你的音乐主题。你为什么选择这些主题？你想通过它们表达什么？歌词也是你写的。是谁写的，创作灵感来自哪里？

Gore, death, violence, horror films—these are your musical themes. Why did you choose such themes? What are you trying to achieve with them? You also wrote the lyrics. Who wrote them, and what inspired them?

V: 你们的标志设计很漂亮。是谁为你们设计的这个标志？你们的专辑封面设计也很精美。是谁为你们设计的这些封面，灵感来源于哪里？

Your logo design is beautiful. Who created this logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed. Who created this artwork for you, and what inspired it?

W: 谢谢，这是多年前一位好友设计的。Wes Benscotter供职于Relapse唱片公司，他根据我们的建议设计了专辑封面。

V: 你们曾通过Primitive Recordings、Hells Headbangers Records和Relapse Records等大型厂牌发行过专辑。你们是如何与这些厂牌建立联系并展开合作的？对这些厂牌的工作表现满意吗？你们目前的厂牌是Mortician Records，顾名思义这是你们自己创立的厂牌。为什么选择创办自己的厂牌？

You've released albums through some major labels like Primitive Recordings, Hells Headbangers Records, and Relapse Records. How did you establish connections with these labels to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work done by these labels? Your current label is Mortician Records—as the name suggests, you founded this label yourselves. Why did you choose to start your own label?

W: 所有厂牌都很好，一直给我们寄来很多周边等。Mortician Records仅负责我们CD的再版发行。

yes on all the labels been great always sending us alot of merch etc mortician records is only for reissue cds from us

V: 你的作品深受众多中国乐迷喜爱。我也是你们乐队的忠实粉丝。你们每一首歌都融入了恐怖电影的采样，这极大地增强了作品中令人毛骨悚然的氛围。那如电锯般嘶哑的吉他音色与你们的风格完美契合。尽管使用了鼓机软件，那沉重的音效却给我留下了深刻的印象。主唱那粘稠的嗓音让你们的作品更加令人难忘。你自己对这些创作有什么看法？

Your work is beloved by many Chinese fans. I'm a devoted fan of your band. Every one of your songs incorporates horror movie samples, which really amplifies the terrifying atmosphere in your work. The chainsaw-like guitar tones perfectly match your style. Even though you use drum software, the heavy sound leaves a lasting impression on me. The singer's viscous vocals make your work even more memorable. What are your own thoughts on your creations?

W: 兄弟，非常感谢你的夸奖！真的很感激，很高兴你能这么觉得。我是主唱，所以谢谢你:)

V: 你参加过许多音乐节。哪些给你留下了深刻印象？你能描述一下那些活动的氛围吗？2026年有哪些音乐节邀请你演出？你还发行过几张现场演出DVD。这些DVD是来自你参加过的音乐节吗？

You've attended numerous music festivals. Which ones left a lasting impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those events? Which festivals have invited you to perform in 2026? You've also released several live DVDs. Are these DVDs from the music festivals you've participated in?

W: 2001年的Wackem Fest绝对是疯狂至极！2026年的活动目前还没有任何消息，而且现在只有一张DVD已售罄

definitely wackem fest 2001 was completely crazy! no nothing for 2026 yet and oinly 1 dvd releases sold out now

V: 我知道你在美国创立了一个俱乐部。能跟我们说说吗？当初创立这个俱乐部的初衷是什么？

I know you founded a club in the United States. Could you tell us about it? What was your original motivation for starting the club?

W: 是的NYDM发起中国分会！主要灵感来源是电影《勇士》以及整体的金属风格:)

yes nydm and thank you for starting up the china chapter! main influences are the warriors (movie) and just netal in general:)

V: 你们乐队已经有一段时间没有发布新作品了，我真的很期待你们的新作品。你们有没有考虑过发行新专辑？能跟大家分享一下最新进展吗？就我个人而言，我对你们的新作品超级期待！

It's been quite a while since your band released any new work, and I'm really looking forward to your new material. Have you considered putting out a new album? Can you share any updates with everyone? Personally, I'm super excited for your new release!

W: 我们确实有12首2007年录制但至今未发布的歌曲，不过目前还不确定会如何处理。我们计划在美国各地巡演，所以谁知道呢……

we do have 12 songs unreleased so far from2007 but not sure yet whats going to happen yet we are to spread out around the u.s so who knows.......

V: Mortician 是一支非常出色的乐队。虽然距离你们上次发片已经有一段时间了，但在每位乐迷心中，你们依然是英雄。我们热切期待你们的新作，并希望有朝一日能在中国看到你们的现场演出。最后，你们想对中国的乐迷说些什么吗？

Mortician is an exceptional band. Though it's been quite some time since your last release, you remain heroes in the hearts of every fan. We eagerly anticipate your new work and hope to see you perform live in China someday. Finally, is there anything you'd like to say to your Chinese fans?

W: 谢谢兄弟，很感激你的尊重和支持。希望有一天我们能去中国，但眼下暂时还不行，日常生活中事情太多了，哈哈。总之感谢这次采访，向中国粉丝以及ml&rnflad致以敬意！！
