今天采访到的是来自美国的Brutal Death Metal乐队Unnecessary Surgery，最初由吉他 / 鼓手的Dennis组建，随后John以歌手的身份加入了乐队并且在2022年发行了他们的Demo作品“Hauled Off in Chunks”，虽然1这张作品只有4首歌曲15分钟，但是充分的展现了乐队的才华，Dennis包揽了所以的创作部分，残酷，快速的Riff，歌手低沉，凶狠的演唱，2023年Dave加入了乐队，为乐队带来了更多的创作灵感，同时乐队也参加了更多的现场表演，得到更多歌迷的关注，支持，前不久杂志与乐队取得联系进行了一次采访！

Today we’re interviewing Unnecessary Surgery, a brutal death metal band from the United States. Originally formed by guitarist/drummer Dennis, the band later welcomed John as their vocalist and released their demo “Hauled Off in Chunks” in 2022. Although this release features only four songs totaling 15 minutes, it fully showcases the band’s talent. Dennis handles all songwriting duties, crafting brutal, fast-paced riffs paired with the vocalist’s deep, ferocious delivery. In 2023, Dave joined the band, bringing fresh creative inspiration. The band has also performed more live shows, gaining increased attention and support from fans. Recently, our magazine reached out to the band for an interview!

V: 嘿老兄，很高兴见到你，非常感谢你接受我们的采访。我记得这是你们乐队第一次接受中国杂志的采访对吧？首先向所有中国乐迷问好。Unnecessary Surgery乐队成立于那一年？你们是怎么聚在一起组建这支乐队的？

Hey, man, it's great to meet you, and thanks so much for joining us for this interview. I believe this is your band's first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine, right? First off, say hi to all your Chinese fans out there. Unnecessary Surgery was formed back in that year—how did you guys come together to start this band?

J: 我们是在现场结识的！！当年，在互联网还没像现在这么赚钱的时候，认识音乐人的途径屈指可数。首选就是去他妈的现场演出！支持本地音乐圈。说真的，我第一次见到Dennis其实是在一辆公共汽车上。我只是因为看他明显是金属乐迷，就直接坐在了他旁边。那时候我还在上高中。我们简单聊了聊乐队，比如Jungle Rot和DEVOURMENT。当时我正沉迷于各种Brutal Death Metal，一直渴望听到更快、更疯狂的演奏。这最终让我开始关注EXULCERATE乐队。Exulcerate作为圣安东尼奥为数不多的Brutal Death Metal乐队之一，早已活跃于当地乐坛，他们是我“必看乐队”清单上的常客。当年在当地唱片店Hog Wild，我总能在无数传单上看到他们的名字，那时候就是这么运作的。这就是我结识Matt和Dave的契机。若要完整讲述这段起源故事，必须提及Dennis Sanders、Matt Hernandez和David Gonzales曾在90年代效力于Death Metal乐队MORTALITY，2000年代初加入EXULCERATE，如今则组建了UNNECESSARY SURGERY，而我作为四人中最年轻的一员加入了这支新乐队。后来，当Dennis为一支名为HOD的、在本地极具影响力的“fucking metal”乐队担任鼓手时，我曾担任他的巡演助理。后来，我开始为自己的乐队HELLKNIFE和CHAOTIC END担任主唱。机缘巧合之下，我联系了Dennis，为他自2005年起便在独自酝酿的个人项目献声。就这样，Unnecessary Surgery应运而生，并被赋予生命，只为带来死亡！

We formed from the scene!! Back in the day, before the internet was as lucrative as it is now, there were only a few ways to meet musicians. Top of the list- go to a fucking show! SUPPORT THE SCENE. Hell, I first met Dennis on a public bus, actually. I sat down right by him just because he was obviously into metal. That's when I was in high school. We talked briefly about bands, like Jungle Rot and DEVOURMENT. I was getting into a lot of brutal death metal at this time, and I kept craving faster, more insane musicianship. This eventually led me to look into the band EXULCERATE. Exulcerate had been around as one of the few brutal death metal acts in San Antonio, and they were on my bucket list as a must-see band. I kept seeing their name on plenty of fliers at the local record store Hog Wild, back in the day, that's how it worked. This is how I met Matt and Dave. To cover the true origin story here, it is best to bring out the fact that Dennis Sanders, Matt Hernandez, and David Gonzales had been in the death metal act MORTALITY in the 90’s, then in EXULCERATE in the early 2000’s, and had now formed UNNECESSARY SURGERY, with me joining the new band as the youngest of the four. I eventually roadied for Dennis when he shredded skins for a crushing hometown cult “fucking metal” band called HOD. Eventually, I started doing vocals for my own bands, HELLKNIFE and CHAOTIC END. One thing led to another, and I hit up Dennis to put vocals down for his own project, which he had been self-decomposing for since 2005. Thus, Unnecessary Surgery was born and brought to life to bring death!

Your band currently has only three members, but judging from your group photo, there appear to be five members. Why are two members missing? Did they leave the band? Are the current three members all original members?

J: 很遗憾，我们的贝斯手Matt Hernandez已经去世了。鼓手Juan Pablo住在另一个城市并在许多乐队中担任鼓手。两地之间的距离是导致我们分道扬镳的原因之一。

Unfortunately, our bass player, Matt Hernandez, has passed away. Juan Pablo, the drummer, lives in another city and shreds in many bands. The distance between cities had a hand in our parting ways.

V: 你们在2022年发行了一张试听专辑，每位成员都曾参与过众多乐队，带来了丰富的创作经验。能否向我们介绍一下你们的创作过程？

You released a demo in 2022, and each member has been involved in numerous bands, bringing considerable creative experience to the table. Could you walk us through your creative process?

J: Dennis和作已久，因此在音乐创作上有着独特的默契和心有灵犀般的理解。有时他们甚至会围绕自己构思出的某个超棒的鼓点节奏来创作吉他段落。我只需用歌词为作品锦上添花，Dennis也会参与部分歌词创作。

Dennis and Dave have been working together for a long time, so they have a certain synergy and telepathic understanding of music composition. Sometimes they will actually write riffs around a certain sick drum pattern that they’ve come up with. I just put the icing on the cake with lyrics, and Dennis does some of that too.

你们的音乐主题围绕着血腥暴力展开。为什么选择这个主题？你们想通过它表达什么？

Your music theme revolves around Gore. Why did you choose this particular theme? What are you trying to express through it?

J: 血腥暴力才是王道！我们基本上遵循了Old School Brutal Death Metal的剧本和传统。我们在这一流派中融入了自己的见解和风格。残暴的音乐自然要配上残暴的主题。毕竟我们总不能去唱些关于心、亲吻和泰迪熊的歌，对吧？

Gore rules! We pretty much kept to the script and tradition of old school brutal death metal. We lace in our own take and brand into the genre. With brutal music comes brutal subject matter. It's not like we can sing about hearts and kisses and teddy bears, ya know?

到目前为止，你们只发行过一张自制的试听带。有没有计划寻找唱片公司合作？

You've only self-released a demo so far. Do you have any plans to seek out a label to collaborate with?

J: 只要条件够诱人，我们就接下这单。到目前为止Brutal Mind和Severed Records在发行方面给了我们很大帮助，这简直太棒了。

When the deal gets sweet enough, we will take it. Brutal Mind and Severed Records have helped us in distribution so far, and that's been sick.

Your logo design is stunning. Who designed it for you? Your album artwork is incredibly intense. Who created it for you?

J: JON ZIG 负责了标志和专辑封面的设计。独一无二！

V: 你们乐队参加过哪些演出？哪些演出给你们留下了深刻印象？能否描述一下当时现场的氛围？2026年你们还受邀参加了哪些演出？

Has your band participated in any performances? Which ones left a lasting impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those events? What other performances have you been invited to in 2026?

J: 演出总是充满激情。有些场次我们会压轴登场，并延长演出时长。近年来我们演过几场Exculerate时期的曲目，或者会在歌单中加入那个时期的几首老歌。我们曾有幸为许多传奇乐队担任暖场。包括——DISMEMBER、MONSTROCITY、GOATWHORE、TIM RIPPER OWENS、OMEN、CRUCIAMENTUM、MOLESTED DIVINITY、INTERNAL SUFFERING、PYREXIA、RUIN、FALSE PROFIT、MORTICIAN、SACRAMENTUM、CENOTAPH、BRODEQUIN、IMPRECATION、REGUGITATION。

Performances have always been intense. Some shows we close the night and play an extended set. We have done a couple of Exculerate sets in recent years, or we will throw a couple of old ones from that era onto the set list. We have had the honor of opening for many legendary bands. Including- DISMEMBER, MONSTROCITY, GOATWHORE, TIM RIPPER OWENS, OMEN, CRUCIAMENTUM, MOLESTED DIVINITY, INTERNAL SUFFERING, PYREXIA, RUIN, FALSE PROFIT, MORTICIAN, SACRAMENTUM, CENOTAPH, BRODEQUIN, IMPRECATION, REGUGITATION.

V: 你2026年有什么新的计划？比如创作和录制新作品——能否和我们分享一些细节？

What new projects do you have planned for 2026? For instance, creating and recording new works—can you share any details with us?

J: 全长专辑应该会在今年发行！

Full-length should be out this year!

V: 你们2022年的试听带是迄今为止唯一的发行作品，这张专辑给我留下了深刻的印象。鼓点紧凑而势不可挡，吉他即兴段落复杂却与鼓点完美契合，主唱的演绎更是充满野性。坦率地说，这张2022年的试听带堪称完美。你们自己对这张专辑有什么看法？

Your 2022 demo is your only release to date, and this album left a profound impression on me. The drumming is tight and relentless, the guitar riffs are complex yet perfectly synchronized with the drums, and the singer's delivery is ferocious. Frankly, this 2022 demo is nothing short of perfect. What are your own thoughts on this album?

J: 我们才刚刚起步！我们手头有一大堆未发布的作品即将面世。这些年来创作了大量曲目，现在它们终于有机会重见天日了。敬请期待！

We are just getting started! We’ve got a fistful of unreleased material that's coming out. A lot of tracks have been composed over the years, and now they will have a chance to be resurrected. Stay tuned!
