Baratro’s music feels like a slowly sinking dream of consciousness: icy black metal foundations, psychedelic and distorted melodies, and an almost suffocating emotional atmosphere together form their unique spiritual world. Beyond the despair traditionally associated with DSBM, they seem more interested in exploring the boundaries between consciousness, loneliness, and nihilism. In this interview, we will dive into the abyssal sound of Baratro through the perspectives of black metal history, creative philosophy, emotional expression, guitar tones, and production details.

Hi, friends! First of all, please introduce Baratro to our readers and listeners.

B: 向火山杂志的所有读者致意，我们是来自意大利南部的Baratro乐队。乐队成员包括主唱Baratro、吉他手兼键盘手Bestia、贝斯手Aske以及鼓手Sorg。

Hail to all readers of volcano magazine, we are Baratro from southern italy. The line up is Baratro on vocals,Bestia on guitar and keyboards,Aske on bass and Sorg on drums.

V: 你们如何理解“Psychedelic Black Metal”与“Depressive Black Metal”之间的关系？在你们看来，这两种气质是天然相通的，还是一种刻意融合的结果？

How do you understand the relationship between “psychedelic black metal” and “depressive black metal”? Do you think these two atmospheres are naturally connected, or are they the result of a deliberate fusion?

B: 是的，这两种氛围绝对是相互关联的。我们想要呈现给乐迷的是真实感，EP中那些迷幻的声效都是真实的（窒息声、尖叫声、咳嗽声等）。我们希望通过音乐，在Psychedelic Black Metal与Depressive Black Metal之间架起一座桥梁，直抵听众内心的痛苦深处。

Yes, the two atmospheres are absolutely connected to each other,what we want to give to our fans is reality,the psychedelic sounds you hear in the EP are real (choking,screams,coughing etc).What we want to do with our music is the common thread between psychedelic black metal and depressive black metal, entering the anguish of our listeners.

V: 很多人认为Black Metal本质上是“向外”的——敌意、亵渎、反社会；而Depressive Black Metal则是“向内”的——孤独、自毁与虚无。你们怎么看待这种区别？

Many people see black metal as something fundamentally “outward” — hostility, blasphemy, anti-social energy — while depressive black metal feels more “inward,” focused on loneliness, self-destruction, and nihilism. How do you view this distinction?

B: 对我们来说，这两者并无区别，因为敌意和反社会主义情绪都可能转化为孤独感和虚无主义。我们生活在一个这样的社会里：一个人只需一点点刺激，就可能陷入攻击性或抑郁状态。许多人将攻击性作为避难所，而另一些人则将抑郁作为避难所。

For us there's no distinction because hostility and anti-socialism can be transform in loneliness and nihilism. We live in a society where it takes very little for a person to slip into aggression or depression. Many people find refuge in aggression while others find refuge in depression.

V: “Baratro” 在意大利语中有“深渊”的含义。这个名字背后是否有某种哲学或精神层面的象征？

“Baratro” means “abyss” in Italian. Is there any philosophical or spiritual symbolism behind the name?

B: 对我们而言，这是一种精神象征：那些身陷深渊的人会做出可能导致死亡的极端行径。“Baratro”一词寓意着难以从深渊中脱身，而归咎于命运是毫无意义的，因为每个人都对自己所做的行为和选择负有责任。

For us is a spiritual symbolism, those who find themselves in the abyss commit extreme acts that can lead to death. Baratro means the difficulty of getting out of the abyss and it's pointless to blame fate,given that every single person is complicit in their actions and choices.

V: Depressive Black Metal往往围绕孤独、绝望与虚无展开，但长期沉浸在这些情绪里，会不会让创作者本身也被吞噬？

Depressive black metal often revolves around loneliness, despair, and emptiness. But can constantly immersing yourselves in these emotions eventually consume the creators themselves?

B: 孤独、绝望、空虚、痛苦都是心理状态，这一创造之所以失败，是因为人类的心智如此脆弱，精神失常的案例不断增加，而这些疯狂的行为往往会引发戏剧性事件和悲剧。

Loliness,despair,emptiness,suffering are state of mind, the creation has failed because the human mind is so fragile, cases of madness are in  constantly increasing and commited crazy actions that can cause dramas and tragedies.

V: 你们通常是在什么情绪状态下写歌？极端情绪会帮助创作，还是反而会让表达变得混乱？

What kind of emotional state are you usually in when writing music? Do extreme emotions help the creative process, or can they sometimes make expression more chaotic?

B: 我们在创作音乐和歌词时的情感状态是愤怒与痛苦。内心的怒火推动着创作进程。对我们而言，这种怒火是积极的。

The emotional state when we writing music and lyrics is the anger and pain. The rage inside help the creative process. Is a positive rage in this case for us.

V: 你们有没有某些特别重要的文学、电影或哲学作品，对 Baratro 的精神世界产生了深刻影响？

Are there any particular works of literature, films, or philosophical ideas that have deeply influenced the spiritual world of Baratro?

B: 我们的吉他手Bestia拍摄恐怖短片，而我们EP中的合成器音色正是受达里奥·阿基多、富尔奇以及"深红"等电影的启发。我们从抑郁文学中汲取灵感，探索存在的阴暗面、忧郁与精神痛苦。

Bestia our guitarist makes horror short movies and the synth in our EP are inspired by the films of Dario Argento,Fulci,profondo rosso. We take inspiration from depressive literature and explore the dark side of existence, melancholy and mental pain.

V: 你们如何在作品里平衡“原始感”与“迷幻氛围”？在制作上，会不会担心声音太干净之后失去黑金属的粗粝感？

How do you balance the “rawness” of black metal with psychedelic atmospheres in your music? During production, do you ever worry that a cleaner sound might strip away black metal’s rough spirit?

B: 在制作阶段，我们保留了Old School Black Metal的音色，但我们的标志性特色在于迷幻音效，以此营造出真实的氛围。黑金属那种粗犷的质感在这张EP中表现得淋漓尽致。

In the production phase we keep the old school black metal's sound but our trademark is the psychedelic sound just to create the real mood . The rawness of black metal is strong in our EP.

V: 你们如何看待Lo-fi制作在Black Metal中的意义？它是一种审美、一种传统，还是一种必要的精神距离？

How do you view the role of Lo-fi production in black metal? Is it an aesthetic choice, a tradition, or a necessary spiritual distance?

B: 这是一条超越传统与精神层面的准则。这是Old School Black Metal，音色强劲而粗犷。

It's a rule that transcends tradition and spirituality. It's black metal old school with strong and raw sounds.

V: 你们有没有某首作品，是你们认为最能代表 Baratro 核心精神的？为什么？

Is there one particular song that you feel best represents the core spirit of Baratro? Why?

B: 所有歌曲，例如第一首"Cypress vomitory"，都阐述了追忆逝者的徒劳。歌曲"Sentenza diabolica"则讲述了那些犯下暴行、临死前才忏悔的人，但地狱仍在等待着他们。"Il marchio nero"探讨了仇恨，而"baratro"则深入剖析了身陷最黑暗深渊之人的人性。人往往会失去理智，做出导致死亡的行径。

All songs for example the first song “Cypress vomitory” we explain of the futility of remembering the deads. The song “Sentenza diabolica” talks about men who commit atrocities and then repent at point of death but hell awaits them. “Il marchio nero” talks about hatred and “baratro” it explores the human side of a person who finds himself in the darkest abyss. A person is irrational and can commit acts can cause the death.

V: 黑金属曾经强调反宗教、反社会与极端个人主义，但如今很多乐队开始讨论情绪、心理与存在主义。你们觉得黑金属的核心精神是否已经改变？

Black metal once strongly emphasized anti-religion, anti-society, and extreme individualism, but today many bands are exploring emotions, psychology, and existentialism instead. Do you think the core spirit of black metal has changed?

B: 这些年来，Black Metal的精神面貌已然发生变化，我们依然在探讨Black Metal的传统主题，许多艺术家也随着时间的推移而不断演变。可以说，它具有内省的特质并致力于探索人类的良知。

The spirit of black metal has changed in these years,we still talk about the old themes of black metal and many artists have also evolved over the years. We can say that it is introspective and studies the consciences of human beings.

V: 最后，到了采访的尾声。如果必须用一句话概括 Baratro 想通过音乐表达的东西，那会是什么？

Finally, as we come to the end of the interview: if you had to summarize what Baratro wants to express through music in just one sentence, what would it be?

B: 你将陷入最黑暗的深渊，从此再也无法脱身…

You will be immersed in the darkest abyss where you will never get out…
