Coming from Modena, Italy, Castelnuovo Rancore may have formed only in 2023, but the band has already developed an intense and uncompromising sound. Their music combines heavy groove-driven riffs, raw anger, and a suffocating atmosphere, bringing a modern sense of aggression into the framework of groove metal. With the release of their debut album "Rotten in the Skull", the band has started gaining attention within the underground metal scene. In this interview, we talk with them about the origins of the project, their creative philosophy, and their perspective on contemporary metal music.

Hey guys, welcome and thanks for doing this interview! First, could you briefly introduce your band Castelnuovo Rancore to Chinese readers? Since the band was formed in 2023, how did you come together, and what was the starting point of this project?

Hello everyone, and thank you for this amazing opportunity! A big shoutout to all the Chinese metalheads reading us! That’s right, the band was formed in July 2023 from Walter’s (drums) and Filippo’s (guitar) desire to get back on track and take their instruments off the wall again! What started with sharing a few beers together quickly turned into filling a rehearsal room with two more members: Jeff (bass and vocals) and Sergio (guitar). After a few months, in November, Sergio stepped away from the project (though not from the friendships within the band), and the lineup underwent a change that turned out to be fundamental. Jeff moved to guitar, and Marcello was recruited on bass. With this new energy, we kept grinding through cover songs, but after a few rehearsals the chemistry between the members crystallized into original material. When Filippo also stepped in as vocalist, the creative drive skyrocketed, and the songs for the first album were written.

V: Castelnuovo Rancore

The name Castelnuovo Rancore is quite unique—what does it mean? Is it related to a real place?

When we chose the name, we definitely never expected to end up explaining it to friends from China, hahaha. It’s actually a distortion of the name of the town Castelnuovo Rangone (province of Modena), a city just a few kilometers away from each of us, even though none of us actually lives there. We found the similarity and sound between “Rangone” and “Rancore” (“resentment” in Italian) really funny, so we simply changed it and adopted it! Someone had to do it!

Your music is categorized as groove metal—how would you define your sound? Do you incorporate elements from other genres?

Our sound was born to be aggressive and completely uncompromising, which is why groove metal is probably the subgenre that fits us best. That said, we don’t fossilize ourselves into one genre or shape our creative process around sticking only to groove metal details. You can definitely hear many other influences in our songs, from grunge to thrash to hardcore!

Which bands or artists have influenced you the most? Did metal from the ’90s and early 2000s play a key role in shaping your style?

Without a doubt, ’90s metal laid the “granite foundations” of our sound. Legendary bands like Pantera, Machine Head, and Korn have had an enormous impact on both our sound and our lives. But they’re not the only ones. All of us listen to a huge amount of music, often very different styles, and we manage to bring our personal influences into the band and blend them together. Outside of metal, we also listen to a lot of blues, country, and electronic music! I’d say the genres that definitely aren’t our thing are trap and reggaeton, hahaha.

When writing music, do you usually start from riffs, or from themes and concepts? What does your songwriting process look like?

Anger Rising"!

The band’s creative process is always very varied and unique from song to song. We don’t really have a fixed “method” for writing. Some songs were born from lyrics brought into the rehearsal room and matched with riffs improvised around those words. Others started from riffs someone had written at home. And then there are songs that were born completely out of nowhere, simply by all of us starting to jam together, like Anger Rising!

Your music is full of anger and tension—do these emotions mainly come from personal experiences or from observations of society?

“Anger and tension” could probably be the subtitle of a movie about the 2020s, hahaha. Jokes aside, all four of us are hot-headed people deeply immersed in a society that seems to have lost its direction. We experience it daily, on our own skin and in our hearts. Our lyrics are a mix of anger toward this historical moment and toward the personal struggles in our own lives that lead us to experience unpleasant emotions. At least all of that finds relief through the roar of amplifiers!

Your debut album Rotten in the Skull was released in 2026. What is the concept behind this record? What do you most want listeners to feel—emotional release, or some form of commentary on reality?

The concept of Rotten in the Skull can basically be summed up by the second word in our band’s name: resentment. Every song drips with this feeling, whether it’s resentment toward society, toward moments or people who crossed our lives, or toward disgusting people who treat women like property. We want listeners to vent their anger and resentment through violent headbanging over our music and lyrics. We want to be the soundtrack to their rage, but at the same time we also want listening to the album to feel liberating and fun. In fact, we dedicated our title track to the listeners themselves: people “rotten in the skull” like us, people who love packing into hot, humid underground basements to let their anger flow out of their bodies through music!

As a newly formed band, what is the biggest challenge you are currently facing?

Definitely one of the hardest challenges is finding stages to play on. We’ve had some incredible lucky breaks that allowed us to perform on several stages in our area, but it’s never enough for us. And if you asked us, we’d come all the way to China to play for you even next weekend!

Castelnuovo Rancore?

For listeners who are not yet familiar with your music, which track would you recommend as a starting point to discover Castelnuovo Rancore?

Drink from the Barrel of Hate"。

I’d definitely recommend Drink from the Barrel of Hate. The title itself is already a declaration of intent, and the music hits like a punch to the teeth, giving listeners a perfect idea of what our project is meant to embody.

How do you see the current development of metal music? Do you think groove metal still has new potential?

Lately metal music seems to be gaining ground everywhere again. There are more bands, more variety within the genre, more active fans and passionate listeners, and even more media attention. Between movies and TV series referencing metal culture, I think younger generations are rediscovering the genre too — and we couldn’t be happier about that! As long as there’s some pissed-off bastard with a guitar and a distortion pedal, groove metal will always have potential!

As we come to the end of the interview, do you have any message for Chinese metal fans to help them get to know your band better?

What can we say… Chinese metalheads, keep destroying your neighbors’ eardrums by blasting the volume to the limit, keep packing those filthy underground bars that spread metal culture, buy merch, listen to new music, and enjoy our album as if we were right there with you!
