今天采访到的是来自美国的Black Metal乐队Neldöreth，组建于2004年的Neldöreth乐队，最初是一支Death Metal乐队，但是在后期乐队对于黑金属的痴迷决定更改风格为Black Metal，粗糙，暗黑，恐怖的氛围，让很多歌迷想起了早期Black / Death Metal乐队，Black的阴险，Death Metal的毒辣，让这支乐队迅速得到了更多歌迷的关注，后期的专辑也得到更多歌迷的关注和认可，2015年乐队与Rectal Collapse / Havok 666 / Vesterian / War Inferno FX / Lustravi等乐队发行了一张名为“Musick for Sick Minds Vol. 2”的Spilt专辑这张专辑由三支巴西的Death Metal乐队和美国的三支Black Metal乐队合作发行，不过这张专辑发行之后Neldöreth乐队就再无任何新作品发行，在前不久乐队的歌手Osman与杂质取得联系进行了一次专访！

Today we’re interviewing the American black metal band Neldöreth. Formed in 2004, Neldöreth began as a death metal band, but the band’s growing fascination with black metal eventually led them to shift their style to black metal. Their raw, dark, and terrifying atmosphere reminds many fans of early black/death metal bands; the insidiousness of black metal combined with the ferocity of death metal quickly earned the band a growing fanbase. Their later albums also garnered significant attention and acclaim from fans. In 2015, the band released a split album titled “Musick for Sick Minds Vol. 2” alongside Rectal Collapse, Havok 666, Vesterian / War Inferno FX / Lustravi and others. This split album, titled “Musick for Sick Minds Vol. 2,” was a collaborative release featuring three Brazilian death metal bands and three American black metal bands. However, following the release of this album, Neldöreth has not released any new material. Recently, the band’s vocalist, Osman, contacted Zaji for an exclusive interview!

Hello Oz, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is your first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans. Neldöreth was founded in 2004 and is a long-standing band. How did you form this band back then? What does the name Neldöreth mean

O: 向你以及中国Black Metal乐迷们问好！这绝对是我接受的第一次中国媒体专访，非常感谢大家对Neldöreth的支持！Neldöreth的组建经历了一个漫长的过程。我在高中时就埋下了种子，当时会在笔记本上写歌词，梦想着组建一支乐队。此后几年里，我尝试过几个不同的音乐项目，但都未能成功。直到2004年，我遇到了Mephisto，他告诉我正打算组建一支Black Metal乐队。于是，他、Morbid（我曾与他合作过几年）、Feist，以及我多年的挚友Nathan Bailey，共同组建了Neldöreth！不过Nathan仅加入数周便离开了。乐队成立一个月后，我们录制了首张demo"Follow the Gods"。关于乐队名称的含义，它源自J.R.R.托尔金系列作品中“中土世界”的一片森林。

Hello to you and the black metal legions of China! This is definitely the first Chinese interview for me, so I appreciate your interest in supporting Neldöreth! The formation of Neldöreth was a very long process. I started to plant the seeds when I was in high school, writing lyrics in my notebook and dreaming about being in a band. I played around with a few different projects that never worked out for a few years. Then in 2004 I met Mephisto and he told me he was looking to start a black metal band, so he, Morbid (who I had worked with for a few years), Feist, and my long time best friend Nathan Bailey, formed Neldöreth! Nathan left after only a few weeks. A month after the band was formed, we recorded the first demo, Follow the Gods. As far as the name meaning, it is a forest in the Middle Earth world from the various books by J.R.R Tolkien.

V: 目前，只有你和Morbid是乐队的第一代成员。另外两名成员是在2014年至2019年间加入乐队的。新成员是如何加入乐队的？你对新成员的表现满意吗？新成员的加入给乐队带来了哪些新的变化？

At present, only you and Morbid are the first generation members of the band. The other two members joined the band from 2014 to 2019. How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job? What new changes has the addition of new members brought to the band?

O: Loki于2014年加入乐队，是由我的一位挚友Brian Ritchey（愿他安息）推荐给我的。我们一见如故，自那以后他便一直留在Neldöreth。他曾随乐队在几个音乐节等场合进行过现场演出，我们正计划终于完成新EP的录制，这将是他为我们创作并发布的首批作品。Invoker是我通过一位女性朋友认识的，当时他正与那位朋友结婚。我们成了挚友，我去芬兰时还曾在他家住了一段时间。这些年来，他参与过几支优秀的芬兰Black Metal乐队（如Blood Red Fog、Cosmic Church、Funerary Bell等）。后来我邀请他加入Neldöreth，他欣然同意。时隔18年，Morbid重返Neldöreth，他非常兴奋能参与这支他多年前亲手创立的乐队的新篇章！至于新阵容为乐队带来了什么，现在说还为时过早，因为我们还没一起创作过新作品。但等即将发行的EP完成后，我们就会着手创作。

Loki joined in 2014 and he was recommended to me by a good friend, Brian Ritchey (RIP). He and I right away connected with each other and he has been with Neldöreth ever since. He has performed live at a few festivals and such with the band and we are planning to finally finish recording the new ep, which will be the first material that he wrote for us to be released. Invoker I met through a female friend who he was married to at the time. We became close friends and I stayed with him for a while when I was in Finland. He has been involved with a few great Finnish black metal bands over the years (Blood Red Fog, Cosmic Church, Funerary Bell, etc). Eventually I asked him to join Neldöreth and he agreed. And after 18 years, Morbid returned to Neldöreth and he is very excited to be part of the next chapter of the band he helped create all those years ago! As far as what the new lineup has brought to the band, it's still too early to say since we haven't written any new material together yet. But we will be working on that once the upcoming ep is finished.

V: 你们是一支拥有丰富创作经验的乐队。能否介绍一下你们的创作过程？我相信你们的创作经验会给更多年轻音乐人带来启发！

You are a group of musicians with rich creative experience. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to more young musicians!

O: 过去，创作通常从我的歌词和整体概念构思开始。随后我会将这些内容交给主要作曲人——目前是洛基。他会先制作一个歌曲的基本演示版本，然后发送给乐队其他成员。正如我在上一个问题中所说，我们目前的阵容还未曾共同创作过任何作品，所以这方面还需拭目以待。

In the past, it starts with my lyrics and general concept ideas. I will then pass it to the main songwriter, which currently is Loki. He will then demo a basic song idea and send it to the rest of the group. Like I said in the previous question, we haven't yet worked on anything together in the current lineup, so time will tell on that.

Each of your albums has made significant progress in recording effects, which is closely related to the changing times. However, your works still maintain a very primitive feeling, and this effect is very suitable for your works. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you?

O: 2004年至2007年间的所有早期录音，都是我们在排练室里自己完成的，那间排练室被称为“圣殿”。"Invert Christ"的乐器部分由前成员Darrell Creel，(RIP)在他家中录制，而我的主唱部分则是在Matt Korr的家庭录音室完成的。至于"Saints of Blasphemy pt I"，Darrell再次在家中负责乐器录制。主唱部分则由我与一位老朋友兼Neldöreth的支持者Billy Slusser共同录制。他还负责了前奏和尾奏曲目中的键盘演奏。

All the early recordings from 2004 until 2007 we did ourselves in our rehearsal room, which was known as "The Temple". On Invert Christ, the music was recorded by former member, Darrell Creel (RIP) at his home and I did my vocals at the home studio of Matt Korr. For Saints of Blasphemy pt I, Darrell again did the music at home. For the vocals I recorded with a long time friend and Neldöreth supporter, Billy Slusser. He also recorded the keyboards on the intro and outro tracks.

Theistic Satanism, Death, Black Magic are your music themes. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

O: 我长期涉足神秘主义、撒旦教及其他黑暗题材。这些内容构成了我职业生涯中大部分创作的基础。Neldöreth的音乐和现场演出，是乐队与彼岸不可见世界之间的一种沟通。我是那些来自异界讯息的载体。当我创作歌词时，流淌而出的正是它们的话语。这个过程往往消耗巨大，这也是我们很少发布新作品的原因。时至今日，我仍是乐队中唯一负责歌词创作的成员。

I have long been involved with the occult, Satanism and other dark subject matter. It's been the basis of my writing for most of my career. Neldöreth's music and live performances are a communication between the band and the unseen world beyond. I am a vessel for the various messages to be released from the other world. When I write the lyrics, it is their words that comes out through me. This process often takes a significant toll, this is the reason why we don't release new material very often. To this day, I am the only member who has done the lyric writing.

V: 你们乐队为什么选择从早期的Death Metal风格转变为后期的Black Metal风格？

Why did your band choose to change their style from early death metal to later black metal?

O: 那只是为了在"Invert Christ"EP中尝试一些不同的东西。Darrell更偏向Death Metal风格，我们想看看这种影响对我们来说效果如何。我个人非常讨厌那张专辑里的自己演唱的部分。后来我又回到了我平常的演唱风格，在现场演出时，我会在那些歌曲中使用Black Metal的唱法。有朝一日，我希望能回去重新录制那张专辑里的我的部分，但这目前并不是我们优先考虑的事情。

That was just to experiment on something different for the Invert Christ ep. Darrell was more of a death metal musician and we wanted to see how that influence would work for us. I personally hate my vocals on that album. I have since went back to my normal vocal style and live I use the black metal vocal style on those songs. One day I would like to go back and re-record my vocals on that album, but it's not something that is currently high on the priority list for us.

V: 你们的乐队与Pagan Pride Records、Obscure Musick、Exterminal Productions以及Wolf's Lair Records等厂牌是如何在发行专辑后建立联系并展开合作的？你们对这些厂牌的工作满意吗？

Your band and Pagan Pride Records、Obscure Musick、Exterminal Productions以及Wolf's Lair Records How did you establish contact and collaborate with these labels after they released their albums? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

O: 仅从基本的沟通等方面来看。Wolf's Lair本应负责发行"Invert the Crucifix"专辑并在一段时间后将剩余的CD退还给我。但这两件事都没有发生。关于这家厂牌，我不再多说。Exterminal Productions总部位于土耳其，我与他们的合作体验非常愉快。他们完美地履行了我们所有的协议。Obscure Musick只是为了合辑合作过一次。我和那家伙最终闹翻了，但这与我们的业务毫无关系。Pagan Pride Records对我们来说远不止是一家厂牌。Brian就像我们的兄弟一样。在过去的几次巡演中，他一直担任我们的巡演经理和司机。我期待在即将发布的作品以及未来继续与他合作。我对PP没有任何负面评价！

Just from basic communications and such. Wolf's Lair was supposed to distribute the Invert the Crucifix album and return any leftover cds to me after a certain period of time. Neither thing happened. I won't say anything more about that label. Exterminal Productions is based out of Turkey and I had very good experience with them. They kept all of our agreements perfectly. Obscure Musick was just a one time thing for a split album. The dude and I eventually had a bitter falling out, but it had nothing to do with our business. Pagan Pride Records is more than just a label for the band. Brian is a brother to us. He has been our tour manager and driver on a few past tours. I look forward to working with him for the upcoming releases and in the future. I have no negative things to say about PP at all!

V: 自从你们在2015年发行了Spilt专辑后，就再也没有推出过新作品。为什么这么多年都没有发布新作品？你们有没有计划在2026年推出新作品？

Since you released a Spilt album in 2015, you haven't released any new works. What's the reason why you haven't released any new works for many years? Do you have any plans to release new works in 2026?

O: 从那时起，我们一直在创作新作品，但各种障碍导致进度放缓。我个人生活中的问题让工作暂停了几年，但现在一切似乎都回到了正轨。目前的计划是在九月底或十月初完成新EP的录制。此外，收录早期作品的合辑也将在今年某个时候发行。

We have been working on new material since then, but there has been a lot of various obstacles that have slowed down the process. Personal issues in my life put things on hold for a few years, but everything seems to be back on track now. The current plan is to finish recording the new ep in either late September or early October. Also the compilation album of early years material will also be released at some point this year.

V: 你们的作品风格凶猛、犀利、阴暗、扭曲，融合了死亡金属的吉他段落，以及黑金属的犀利与阴暗。你的演唱凶猛而犀利，鼓手快速精准的击打也令人印象深刻。你对自己作品的看法是怎样的？

Your works are fierce, spicy, dark, twisted, death metal Riff, black metal spicy, dark. Your singing is fierce, spicy, and the drummer's fast and precise strikes are also impressive. What is your opinion on your own works?

O: 我对某些作品感到满意，对另一些则不太感冒。不过，我们发行的作品中，没有哪一张是我能说自己绝对讨厌的。每张专辑都承载着那个特殊时期的印记，与那些回忆紧密相连。不过，相比十几岁、二十多岁和三十多岁时，我现在对哪些作品够格发行变得挑剔多了。

I am satisfied with some material and not too keen on others. Nothing we have released I can say I absolutely hate. Each album had it's own special period of time and have those memories attached. I however, have become much more picky about what I consider to be good enough to be released than I was in my teens, 20s and 30s.

V: 作为一支老牌乐队，你们曾参加过哪些音乐节或现场演出？哪些现场演出给你们留下了深刻印象？能否介绍一下当时现场演出的氛围？

As an old band, which music festivals or live performances have you participated in, and which live performances have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere of the live performances at that time?

O: 目前我实在想不起哪个特定的音乐节或现场演出特别令人难忘。关于我们的现场演出，目前我们没有进行现场表演，未来几年也没有这方面的计划。2028年或许会有一些计划，但目前尚无法透露。不过我们过去的现场演出堪称舞台上的黑魔法仪式——蜡烛、香薰、动物骨骼，以及腐烂的动物血液。在舞台上，我便是之前提到的那些无形之物的容器。你和你的读者可以在YouTube上找到我们过去演出的诸多实例，建议观看一些并形成自己的看法。Neldöreth不仅仅是一支乐队。我们是一座神殿，一个容器，更是连接现世与彼岸世界的桥梁。管它叫地狱、冥界或者别的什么，这一切都由他们主宰。我明白这对许多人来说可能难以理解，他们可能只把我们当作娱乐，这也没关系，但对于那些踏上我们所追随之路的被选中者而言，他们的体验将更加广阔且充满智慧。

At the moment I can't really think of one specific festival or live performances that sticks out in memory. As far as our live performances, we currently are not performing live, and there is no plans to do so for the next few years. We possibly have something in the works for 2028, but nothing I can reveal at the moment. But our past live performances were a black magick ritual on stage. Candles, incense, animal bones, and decaying animal blood. On stage I am a vessel for the unseen ones I mentioned before. You and your readers can find multiple examples of past performances on YouTube. I suggest watching some and make your own personal opinions and such. Neldöreth is more than just a band. We are a temple, a vessel and a bridge between our world and the world beyond. Call it Hell, Hades, whatever, but it is all by their command. I understand this may be hard to understand for many and they just see us as entertainment, which is fine, but to the chosen ones who are involved in the path that we follow, their experience is far more vast and knowledgeable.

You are an excellent band, and I will always pay attention to and support your band.
