安魂曲第一章:穿越小径,跨越废墟 - 意大利Black Metal乐队Via ad Mortem专访

Today we interviewed Via ad Mortem, a black metal band steeped in mysticism and the occult. This Italian black metal band is very young, having been formed in 2025, but its three members—Gibil, Santamuertero Sinister, and Hiems Silens—are all seasoned musicians who have been involved with many prominent Italian bands. This year, they released their first full-length album Requiem I: Through the Path, over the Ruins this year via Northern Darkness Records. The album opens with a biting chill and chilling melodies, followed by primal, dark compositions that unleash a primal feast, offering a deeply mystical experience. Unlike other black metal bands, Via ad Mortem does not rely on keyboards or other instruments to create atmosphere; instead, they use traditional guitars, bass, and drums to craft the most primal and darkest works. Via ad Mortem’s debut album, Requiem I: Through the Path, over the Ruins, can undoubtedly be counted among the most outstanding black metal releases of 2026. To mark the release of this new album, our magazine reached out to the band members for an exclusive interview! Hello brothers, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans. Via ad Mortem was founded in 2025 and is a very young band. How did you form this band back then? What does the name Via ad Mortem mean?


A: Ave,这绝对是我们首次接受中国杂志的采访,对此我们深感荣幸。Via ad Mortem 在拉丁语中意为“通往死亡之路”。每天,我们都在以这样或那样的方式走向死亡。从肉体层面来说,也许你患上了癌症;从精神层面来说,也许你将死亡视为一种实体加以崇拜;从哲学层面来说,也许你正准备改变生活并实现自我进化。唯一重要的是不要畏惧死亡。这个项目由Hiems Silens和Gibil创立;Santamuertero Sinister是在歌曲音乐部分完成后加入的。


Ave, it’s definitely our first interview for a Chinese magazine and it’s such an honor for us. Via ad Mortem means ‘way to Death’ in Latin. Every day we walk towards Death, in one way or another. Physically, maybe you have cancer, spiritually maybe you worship her as an entity, philosophically maybe you’re going to change your life and evolve yourself. The only important thing is not to be afraid of Death. The project was formed by Hiems Silens and Gibil; Santamuertero Sinister joined after the songs were musically complete.


V: 你们乐队的三位成员都是创始成员,彼此非常熟悉,因此在创作歌曲方面会更加得心应手。能否介绍一下你们的创作过程?


The three members of your band are all first generation members, and you are very familiar with each other, so you will be more adept at creating songs. Can you introduce your creative process?


A: 音乐通常由Hiems Silens(吉他、贝斯)和Gibil(鼓手)在家中或排练室的创作灵感迸发时创作完成。Santamuertero Sinister通常会在编曲、键盘、电影采样以及此类细节方面为创作过程做出贡献。歌词是在歌曲完全完成后才创作的,主题的选择则依据吉他即兴段落所营造的情绪。在创作过程中,总会伴随着香烛的祝福仪式。


The music is generally composed by Hiems Silens (guitars, bass) and Gibil (drums) during creative blazes at home or in the rehearsals room. Santamuertero Sinister usually contributes to the composition process with arrangements, keyboards, movie samples and minor stuff like this. The lyrics are written after the songs are fully complete and the themes are chosen following the mood of the riffs. During the writing process a blessing ritual with incense and candles is always present.


V: 你们新发行的专辑录音效果非常出色。这张专辑是在哪家录音室录制的?由哪位制作人操刀制作的?这张专辑的录制过程顺利吗?


The new album you released has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you, and did the recording process of this album go smoothly?


A: 我们的首张专辑"Requiem I:…"是在Sinister Bunker Studio录制的,那里是Santamuertero Sinister的家庭录音室,只有鼓部分是在Death Lab Studio录制的。编曲和制作是由四人共同完成的,包括Via ad Mortem以及负责专辑混音和母带处理的Mattia。录音过程相当折腾,因为我们彼此距离不近(维罗纳和特雷维索相距大约两小时车程),但最重要的是专辑最终呈现出了我们想要的效果。


Our first album ‘Requiem I:…’ was recorded at the Sinister Bunker Studio, the home studio of Santamuertero Sinister except for the drums (Death Lab Studio). The arrangements and the production had been a four-mind job, Via ad Mortem plus Mattia, the dude who mixed and mastered the album. The recording process was pretty much a pain in the ass because we’re not exactly close to each other (Verona and Treviso are more or less 2 hours apart) but the only important thing is that the album came out as we intended.

Your band's logo design is very beautiful. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed. Who designed this artwork for you?


A: 我们这精美的标志是由“标志之王”Christophe Szpajdel设计的。能请到这位设计了当今绝大多数顶尖Black Metal乐队标志(比如Emperor和Enthroned!)的大师为我们操刀,我们深感荣幸。他最近来过维罗纳,我们和他聊了很久,他真是个好人。他还现场为我们画了一个新徽章,灵感源自我们现有的标志和圣死女神(Santa Muerte)的印章。而封面插画则出自Vahn Artworks(Sang Ho Moon)之手,他是一位才华横溢的韩国艺术家,创作了许多其他精彩的艺术作品。去看看他的Metal Archives主页,看看他画了多少精彩的作品吧!


Our wonderful logo was designed by the Lord of the Logos Christophe Szpajdel. It’s such an honor for us to have our logo designed by the mastermind behind most of the best Black Metal logos out there (Emperor and Enthroned, man!). He recently came to Verona and we had a long chat with him, he’s such a nice person. He also drew live a new emblem for us, inspired by our actual logo and the Santa Muerte seal. The cover artwork instead was done by Vahn Artworks (Sang Ho Moon), a very versatile Korean artist who’s behind lots of other awesome artworks. Death, Santa Muerte, Necromancy, Philosophy, Voodoo are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?


A: Via ad Mortem的创作初衷是向死亡致敬。正如我们之前所说,Santamuertero Sinister是在乐曲创作完成后才加入乐队的;Gibil和Hiems Silens向他阐明了作品的核心主题,而他则借此机会表达了自己的精神世界——因为他私下里信奉圣死女神(Santa Muerte)的魔法教派。尽管这是核心主题,但我们并不想仅局限于该教派,因此他在歌词中融入了围绕死亡的藏传灵性、埃沃拉(Evola)与容格(Jünger)的反现代主义与反物质主义哲学、南美洲的墓葬与招魂教派、胡杜(Hoodoo,与桑特里亚及圣死女神崇拜密切相关),以及历史等元素。我们希望表达这种精神信仰,传递我们的反物质主义思想,并引导听众思考生与死。既然死亡是生命的一部分,就应当拥抱她,而非畏惧她。而那种建立在物质、金钱及一切虚幻之物基础上的现代生活,并非真正的生活,那仅仅是生物本能。每个人都有责任寻求精神启迪,而将死亡作为实体来崇拜,正是我们实现这一目标的方式。


Via ad Mortem has been created to pay homage to Death. As we told you before Santamuertero Sinister joined the band after the music was composed; Gibil and Hiems Silens told him what the main focus was and he took the opportunity to express his spirituality since he privately practices the Santa Muerte magic cult. Even if it’s the main topic we don’t want to focus only on that cult, so he wrote some lyrics about Tibetan spirituality surrounding Death, the anti-modernist and anti-materialistic philosophy of Evola and Jünger,

the sepulchral and necromantic cults of South America, Hoodoo (pretty much linked to Santeria and Santa Muerte cult), history. We want to express this kind of spirituality, our anti-materialistic thoughts and to make the listener think about life and Death. Since Death is part of your life you have to embrace Her, not to fear Her. And a modern life based on material things, money and everything that is ephemeral is not a true life, it’s just biology. Every person has the duty to search for the spiritual illumination, and worshipping Death as an entity is our way to do so.

V: 你是如何与Northern Darkness Records取得联系,并合作推出你的首张专辑的?你对与该厂牌的合作满意吗?


How did you get in touch with Northern Darkness Records to collaborate on your first album? Are you satisfied with the job at this brand?


A: Northern Darkness Records的老板当时正在观看Wendol的现场演出,这是Santamuertero Sinister的个人Black Metal项目。当时Gibil作为特邀鼓手在现场演出,他与NDR老板相识于Handful of Hate乐队专辑"Hierarchy 1999"发行之时——这张由NDR发行的专辑堪称意大利最著名且最具历史意义的黑金属乐队之一的最杰出作品(若你尚未听过,务必去听听看!)。由于老板很喜欢那场演出,加上时隔多年再度重逢,两人便聊起了这个新项目,合作就此展开。这张CD成品非常精美(不是吗?),我们对此感到十分满意。


The Northern Darkness Records boss was attending a live gig of Wendol, the solo Black Metal project of Santamuertero Sinister. Gibil was playing drums as a session member there and he knew the NDR boss since the release of Handful of Hate’s ‘Hierarchy 1999’, the best album of one of the most known and historical Italian Black Metal bands, released by NDR (go check it out if you don’t know it!). Since he liked the gig and they met again after so many years they had a chat about the new project and the collaboration started. The CD came out beautiful (didn’t it?) so we’re satisfied with it.


V: 首先,恭喜你们发行了首张正式专辑"Requiem I: Through the Path, over the Ruins"。那暗黑而充满张力的吉他riff、迅捷精准的鼓点,以及充满张力的演唱都给我留下了深刻的印象。你对这张专辑有什么个人看法吗?


First of all, congratulations on the release of your first official album "Requiem I: Through the Path, over the Ruins". The dark and spicy Riff, fast and precise drumming, and spicy singing have left a deep impression on me. Do you have any personal opinions on this album?


H: 这些歌曲是在居家独处的寂静中构思出来的:寂静能激发感知,我认为后来最终凝结成歌曲的大部分内容,正是以这种方式自然而然地浮现在我脑海中的。创作过程迅速、冲动且本能地展开;我们每个人都将自己的感受转化为音乐,我相信这种自然与真诚是绝对能被感知的。


The songs were conceived in domestic solitude: silence predisposes perception, and I think that most of what later crystallized into the songs simply came to me that way. The compositional process unfolded rapidly, impulsively and instinctively; each of us translated our own feelings into music, and I believe this naturalness, this honesty, is absolutely perceptible.


G: 打鼓就像一种自我牺牲,是对黑金属及其极端、特立独行的精神的虔诚致敬。暴力、执念、坚韧与毁灭,正是我坐在鼓后的原因。


Playing drums is like a self-sacrifice, a devoted homage to Black Metal, to its extreme and unconventional spirit. Violence, obsession, perseverance, and devastation are the reasons why I'm behind the drums.


S: 我对这张专辑相当满意。但我确信下一张会好上两倍!


I am pretty satisfied with the album. But I am sure the next one will be twice as good!


V: 你们乐队参加过哪些现场演出?其中哪些给你们留下了深刻印象?能否介绍一下当时现场演出的氛围?你们在现场的服装和妆容设计非常独特,这些舞台造型是由谁设计的?


What live performances have your band participated in, and which ones left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere of the live performances at that time? Your on-site costumes and makeup designs are very unique. Who designed these stage designs for you?

We have played live only twice, both of which were special for different reasons. We have been extremely lucky with the first concert because the venue let us play our Ritual with incenses and candles, which is rare here because of the incident in Switzerland some time ago (almost fifty people died because they played with fire on New Year’s Eve). The second time we were lucky to play with Dødsfall, an awesome Black Metal band from Sweden but formed by Mexican people: they enjoyed both the music and the concept since we pay tribute to an actual Mexican tradition. Our makeup /masks designs have been chosen for esoteric and magic purposes: in Chaos Magick using masks during an actual ritual, with the help of all of the senses (taste: tequila before playing – smell: copale incense – sight: crosses and altar – touch: rusty nails and holy water) you can be possessed by the entity you’re working with. The goal is to actually get possessed by Death while playing if we reach the state of Gnosis (no thinking, just like meditation). Our stage setup is meant to look like a Ritual in a cemetery: crosses, candles, incense, bones (both human and animal), and is intended to make the viewers and listeners feel like they’re attending our esoteric mass. We also try to involve our supporters in the Ritual: they can write a prayer, a desire or a thought to a dead person or to our Queen Holy Death herself and at the end of the gig / Ritual we burn it inside the black sage smudge to make them reach the Spirits and entities. This is our interpretation of the Santa Muerte Ritual for the Días de los Muertos.


V: 哪些乐队对你们产生了影响?能介绍一下你们最喜欢的乐队吗?


Which bands have influenced you? Can you introduce your favorite band?


H: 我不认为有哪支乐队曾给我们带来过特别的启发……当然,我们的音乐风格根植于最经典的老派黑金属,融合了90年代挪威黑金属与更具芬兰特色的音色。从Nargaroth到Drudkh、Svrm或Afsky,从Dissection到抑郁黑金属乐队,再到Spite Extreme Wing等等……


I don't think there are specific bands that we were specifically inspired by... Certainly our sound has its roots in the most canonical and old school Black Metal, a mix between the 90s Norwegian Black Metal and the more typically Finnish sound. From Nargaroth to Drudkh, Svrm or Afsky, from Dissection to Depressive Black Metal bands passing through Spite Extreme Wing and so on and so forth...


S: 在这个项目中我没有受到任何音乐上的影响,因为我只负责编曲,而不参与实际的吉他即兴段落或鼓点填充。至于歌词,我更多受到哲学家(埃沃拉和容格)、诗人(邓南遮、翁加雷蒂)以及古老的秘传与宗教典籍(《西藏度亡经》、《武士道》)的影响。我喜欢的乐队太多,且与Via ad Mortem的音乐风格大相径庭,但这里列举几支:Daughter(独立摇滚,英国), End of Green(哥特摇滚,德国),Woods of Desolation(氛围黑金属,澳大利亚),Deafheaven(后黑金属,美国),Death in June(新民谣,英国/澳大利亚),Seigneur Voland(黑金属,法国),Satanic Warmaster(黑金属,芬兰)。


I have no musical influences in this project since I just work on the arrangements and not on the actual riffs or drum fills. And for the lyrics I am more influenced by philosophers (Evola and Jünger), poets (D’Annunzio, Ungaretti), old esoteric and religious books (‘The Tibetan Book of the Dead’, ‘Bushidō’). I have too many favorite bands and way too different from the Via ad Mortem’s musical style but here are some: Daughter (Indie Rock, UK), End of Green (Goth Rock, GER), Woods of Desolation (Atmospheric Black Metal, AUS), Deafheaven (Post Black Metal, US), Death in June (Neofolk, UK/AUS), Seigneur Voland (Black Metal, FR), Satanic Warmaster (Black Metal, FI).


G: Svrm、Drudkh、Afsky、Sargeist、My Dying Bride。


V: 虽然你们乐队成立时间不长,但作品非常成熟。我会一直关注并支持你们。我也希望通过这次采访,吸引更多中国乐迷关注和支持你们。采访即将结束,最后想对中国的乐迷和朋友们说些什么吗?


Although your band is a very young band, your works are very mature. I will always pay attention to and support your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support your band through this interview. The interview is coming to an end.
