Today we’re featuring Hellstedt, a one-man rhythm metal band from Sweden. Swedish musician Mircea Nestor formed this solo project in the summer of 2023 as an outlet for his creative exploration. Working alone allows Mircea the freedom to bring his diverse musical ideas to life within Hellstedt. In 2024, Hellstedt released their debut full-length album, For No One in Particular. This 30-minute album features 10 tracks, most of which are between 2 and 3 minutes long. Though brief, they showcase Mircea’s rich and diverse musical ideas. Additionally, Mircea handled every aspect of the album himself, from recording to production. In this interview, Mircea shares his insights on creating music as a small-scale independent artist and his anticipation for embarking on new creative projects in the future.

M: Hello Mircea, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. When was Hellstedt band founded and how did you form this band?
Hello, nice to meet you, too! I think that's right, it is the first time talking to a Chinese publication. I started Hellstedt over the summer of 2023, around that time. I had always loved music, played instruments and so on, and I also had a desire, or rather a need, for a creative outlet. It's a really good feeling for me to create something, so I thought it was about time to put those two together. I tried writing my own songs, I had a blast doing it, so Hellstedt kept on going.
The band has only one person, so it will be more convenient to create songs because you can create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process?
Hellstedt for me is all about being alone with my creativity, seeing where ideas take me and what I end up expressing. In the beginning, perhaps due to my own insecurities, I had more of a design in mind to have it sound a certain way or have the songs be a certain way. Over the years, and especially during the making of this last album we are talking about, the process evolved and it became more open-ended. I let my ideas run wild and tried not to impose too much barriers on what they could become. A song could start with a riff, a mood, something I wanted to express, like a lyric. Most times they came in pairs, maybe that riff with that idea in the lyrics. Then came the really good fun of tinkering, developing, trying out ideas, see how they fit (or not!). I suppose a good analogy, for better or worse, would be imagining a painter alone in their workshop. For better or worse, because as you said, I am alone in this process so there is always of risk of going overboard with something, but perhaps there is some sort of beauty in that as well.
Your album has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record your album in? Which producer made the album for you?
Thank you very much for saying that. It really helps with my self-esteem! I am perhaps most unsure of the technical side of things. Me doing stuff by myself extends even to the recording, mixing and all that. I have not collaborated with anybody on that (again, for better or worse) and I recorded everything where I live. I have put together a very simple DIY recording studio that fits in a bag. It is quite amazing what technology allows one to do today! The only exception is the vocals which, out of consideration to my neighbours and family, I mostly recorded at a rehearsal space that I rent.
Your logo design is simple, but I really like this design form because I can easily remember the band name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed. Who designed these album artworks for you?
I think you are probably noticing a pattern by now. I did those myself as well. I really enjoy doing all of these things myself so even if that perhaps others are more skilled or better equipped to do a certain design job, I feel it is more fun to do it myself at this point. The logo I doodled in a notebook over and over again until it looked OK. I hade a pretty good idea how it should look. For the cover I did a few versions, again based on an idea that slowly took shape while I was working on the music. I am quite happy with how it turned out! I actually got a gift for my birthday, a T-shirt with this cover on it. I think it looks quite nice, ha ha!
What is your music theme about, why did you choose this music theme, and what do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. What was the inspiration for these lyrics?
I tried to mirror this more open-ended approach to the lyrics as well. I tried to write things that felt true for myself. Sometimes it is line of text I worked on a while in my notebook, other times they came rather spontaneously when I was recording the vocals. I guess you could look at it like a sort of deep dive into my thoughts and feelings over the course of making this record. I guess that would be the inspiration, just live and getting through the week, ha ha. Stuff that I guess most of us go through. Towards the end of the process I looked at what came out and I think I see a theme, that maybe was there from the beginning. I guess it has to do with acceptance, or accepting things that you maybe can't change, who you really are. It is nothing new or groundbreaking, that's for sure! But I guess there's a reason why themes like this keep turning up in the art humans keep making.
Your albums are all self released digital versions. Have you considered collaborating with a label to release albums? Have you been in contact with any manufacturers currently?
Not really. As it is now, I look as Hellstedt as my own personal creative space, so it feels natural to handle everything by myself. Then there is a business aspect, of course, or rather the lack of it. I have a day job and I make this music for myself, because I love the process. Then I release it in the hope that maybe it gets to mean something for someone else, just like other's songs have become important things in my own life. That would be great! But I also release them to have a sense of finality, to allow myself to move on. See if there are some more songs waiting to come out or if I need to start looking for another hobby!
You released your first official album in 2024, and your work is full of vitality, strong harmonies and pleasant melodies, full of rhythmic rhythms. What do you think of your work?
Ha ha, I guess I am the last person you should ask that. I probably see the flaws in my work more than anybody else. I guess that's inevitable because you start with a dream version of an idea and by the time it develops into an actual song, that dream met reality and became a real thing. That sweet potential before it becomes real is probably unmatched. I wonder if the artist I admire feel the same about their own work. It is kind of a funny thought, right? Your favourite artist maybe things your favourite song, the one that means so much to you, is kind of a failure! But, anyway, I am very glad that you think such nice things about my songs. Thank you for that!
What live performances have you participated in, and which ones left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere of the live performances at that time? What other live performance plans do you have for 2026?
Hellstedt does not have a live aspect to it, it is just the recorded songs. At the moment, anyway. Never say never and all that. So any live performance plans I have involve me seeing amazing musicians on stage when I attend concerts. I love live music, it is quite a unique feeling! I am actually going to see Opeth in a rather special venue here in Sweden in August. Looking forward to that!
Do you have any new work to do in 2025? For example, when creating or recording new songs, can you share some information with everyone?
I am taking a break from making music at the moment as there are few other things in my life that I need to take care of right now. I am still picking up the guitar and playing around with ideas, of course, but nothing more than that. I suspect that when the weather becomes cold and dreary again, towards the autumn months, that I'll retreat in my DIY studio and see if something comes out of that.
You are an excellent musician, and I will always pay attention to and support your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support your band through this interview. The interview is coming to an end, do you have anything you want to say to Chinese fans and friends at the end?
Again, thanks for your kind words. It means a lot for a small, DIY artis like myself. I hope that your readers give the music a chance and that it will resonate with at least some of them. I think that is a beautiful thing, when I find a song that clicks with me, it's like making a connection with somebody on the other side of the world. So it would make me very happy if a song I made would click like that with your readers. The album can be streamed free of charge over on Bandcamp, so don't feel like you need to pay to hear the music. Thank you for the opportunity to talk to you and your reades! I wish you all the best!
