突发性强风暴 - 加拿大Grindcore乐队SKWAR专访

最近几年加拿大涌现出大批量的Old School Grindcore乐队，都是以快速，短小的创作为主，那么今天咱们就来介绍一支这样的年轻乐队SKWAR，虽然这支乐队成立于2025年，但是乐队的所有成员都是加拿大Grindcore风格当中经验丰富的音乐家，SKWAR乐队今年在法国的Crypt of Dr. Gore厂牌发行了他们的第一张正式专辑“SKWAR”，在Old School Grindcore加入了一些电子采样，也是今年最有特色的作品之一，在新专辑发行之际通过Crypt of Dr. Gore厂牌的协助，杂志与乐队取得联系进行了一次专访！

In recent years, Canada has seen the emergence of a large number of "old-school" grindcore bands, all characterized by fast-paced, short-form compositions. Today, we’re introducing one such young band: SKWAR. Although the group was formed in 2025, its members are all seasoned musicians within the Canadian grindcore scene. This year, SKWAR released their self-titled debut album, *SKWAR*, via the French label Crypt of Dr. Gore. The record infuses old-school grindcore with electronic samples, making it one of the most distinctive releases of the year. To mark the album's launch, and with the help of Crypt of Dr. Gore, we reached out to the band for an exclusive interview!

Hello! It’s great to meet you, and thank you so much for taking part in this interview. I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. To start things off, would you like to say hello to all your Chinese fans? In what year was the band SKWAR formed, and how did you all come together? Also, is there any specific meaning behind the name "SKWAR"?

S: 首先，感谢你们提供这次采访机会！我们也想向中国所有的乐迷——包括未来的乐迷们——问好；你们太棒了！JR特别想向来自Awakening Records的李萌问好，正是他们在2021年重新发行了Putricid合辑！SKWAR成立于2025年3月。当时，Yannick（主唱）、Fredo（鼓手）和 JR（吉他手）——他们自2008年起就在“Who Cares?”乐队中合作——离开了他们自2016年起参与的另一个乐队“Chadhel”。他们决定开启一个全新的项目，不久之后，JR的儿子Émile也加入了进来，负责电子元素和采样部分。最近，Stéphane也加入了乐队，担任贝斯手。“SKWAR”是我们当地的一种方言词汇，对应英语中的“squall”，指的是那种短暂、突然且非常猛烈的风暴。

First of all, we would like to thank you for this interview, and we’d also like to send a shout-out to all the fans, and future fans, in China; you are incredible! JR would especially like to greet Li Meng from Awakening Records, who re-released the Putricid compilation album in 2021! SKWAR was formed in March 2025 after Yannick (vocals), Fredo (drums), and JR (guitar), who have been playing together since 2008 in the band Who Cares?, left Chadhel, another band they had been with since 2016. They decided to start fresh with a new project, and soon after, JR’s son, Émile, joined the group to handle the electronic and sampling elements. More recently, Stéphane also joined the lineup on bass. "SKWAR" is a local term, typical of our region, for "squall", referring to a brief, sudden, and very violent storm.

V: 你们是一群拥有丰富创作经验的音乐人。你们平时是如何创作歌曲的？能跟我们分享一下你们的创作流程吗？新专辑的创作过程进行得顺利吗？

You are a group of musicians with a wealth of creative experience. How do you go about writing songs—could you walk us through your creative process? Has the process for your new album been going smoothly?

S: 我们的创作过程是集体协作的。有时JR会提出一两个基础构思，然后由大家共同进行加工；有时，灵感则是完全从零开始构思出来的。我们会根据歌曲的情绪基调，尝试各种可能性，从而构建出整首歌的结构。这种集体创作所迸发出的能量非常直观，也至关重要。结构确定后，我们会加入最终细节，其中一些细节是在录音过程中临时决定的。电子元素和采样是在录音室录制工作完成后制作的；这是混音和母带制作之前的最后一个创作阶段。最后，我们将这些电子元素和采样在乐曲中独立呈现的片段整合进去，从而完成了最终作品。

The creative process is a collective one. Sometimes JR brings one or two basic ideas that are then transformed by the group; at other times, ideas are developed entirely from scratch. We then build the structure by experimenting with all the possibilities inspired by the mood of the song. The energy of this collaborative creation is palpable and highly significant. Once the structure is set, we add the final details, some of which are decided only during the recording session itself. Electronic elements and samples are created after the studio recording is complete; this serves as the final creative stage before mixing and mastering. To conclude, we integrate moments where these electronic elements and samples stand alone within the piece, resulting in the final work.

V: 你们今年发行的新专辑录音质量极佳。请问是在哪家录音室录制的？由谁担任制作人？录音过程顺利吗？

The recording quality of the new album you released this year is excellent. Which studio did you record it in, and who served as the producer? Did the recording

process go smoothly?

S: 这张专辑是在Studio ROT666制作的，该录音室由JR和Émile共同拥有。这并非这对父子档首次合作；每当他们联手制作专辑时，工作流程总是既迅速又高效。这是该录音室出品的第 33个项目。JR负责录音，而Émile则负责混音和母带制作。对于JR而言，这就像是在他最熟悉的环境中工作；但对于Émile来说，这却是他参与过的风格最“暴力”的一个项目。

The album was produced at Studio ROT666, which belongs to JR and Émile. This is not the first project the father-son duo has worked on together; when they collaborate on an album, the process is both fast and efficient. This release marks the 33rd project to emerge from the studio. JR handled the recording, while Émile took care of the mixing and mastering. While JR was in his natural habitat, for Émile, this was the most violent project he had ever worked on.

V: 你们今年的新专辑是通过法国厂牌Crypt of Dr. Gore发行的——这个厂牌的经营者恰好是我的好友，而且它本身也是一个非常出色的厂牌。你们最初是如何与他们建立联系并达成合作的？对他们的工作表现满意吗？

Your new album this year was released through the French label Crypt of Dr.

Gore—a label that happens to be run by good friends of mine, and an excellent label at that. How did you first connect with them to set up this collaboration, and are you satisfied with their work?

S: 用“超乎预期”来形容再贴切不过了。Doc Gore给予了我们极大的支持，他是我们最坚实的后盾。在与本项目涉及的其他厂牌（美国的Thrones Of Lies Records和波兰的Helldog Records）沟通时，他起到了关键的协调作用，确保了沟通顺畅。他总能提出宝贵建议，考虑到我们未曾察觉的细节，并且总是能提前预判接下来需要完成的工作。我们对他感激不尽。此外，在魁北克，两家传奇厂牌D7i和Doomday Machine负责制作了磁带版本，该版本即将面世。

The expression "going above and beyond" truly applies here. Doc Gore has been an incredible support, he’s our rock. He was the primary person ensuring smooth communication with the labels involved in the project (Thrones Of Lies Records in the U.S. and Helldog Records in Poland). He offers suggestions, thinks of things that hadn’t even crossed our minds, and is always one step ahead of what needs to be done. We can never thank him enough. Back in Quebec, the labels D7i and Doomday Machine, both legendary, produced the tape version, which will be available soon.

V: 你们音乐的主题是什么？为什么选择这个主题？又想通过它表达什么？

What is the theme of your music, why did you choose this theme, and what do you intend to express through it?

S: 这张专辑没有特定的主题；歌词主要取材于时事以及Yannick当时的心境。诸如环境、平等以及民族独立等议题，都是我们非常关心的，它们构成了整张专辑的背景基调。

The album has no specific theme; the lyrics are primarily inspired by current events andYannick’s state of mind at the time. Issues such as the environment, equality, and the independence of peoples are close to our hearts and serve as a backdrop throughout the album.

V: 你们的乐队标志和专辑视觉设计与“碾核”风格非常契合。这些作品出自谁之手？专辑封面又蕴含着怎样的深意？

Your logo and album artwork fit the grindcore style perfectly. Who designed them for you, and is there any meaning behind the album artwork?

S: 乐队标志由我们的挚友Jean-Philippe Dion设计——他是Chadhel乐队最初的主唱，也是一位极其出色的插画师。他精准地捕捉到了我们想要的风格，创作出的标志看起来仿佛历经风暴摧残，已然支离破碎。至于专辑封面，则由我们的另一位挚友Alex Devost设计（他曾是 Deboned乐队的主唱，目前效力于Senseless Strife乐队）。我们给了他充分的创作自由，他从我们的音乐中汲取灵感，构思出一个正在崩塌的世界——这恰如我们当今的社会。封面上的意象同样呈现出一种被风暴向外吹散的状态；结合乐队标志来看，它完美地诠释了SKWAR的核心精髓。

The logo was created by our brother Jean-Philippe Dion, Chadhel’s original vocalist and an incredible illustrator. He immediately grasped the right style, crafting a logo that looks as though it has been battered and blown apart by a storm. As for the album cover, it was designed by another of our brothers, Alex Devost, formerly the vocalist for Deboned and currently for Senseless Strife. We gave him “carte blanche”, and he drew inspiration from our music to develop a concept of a world collapsing, much like our own society. Once again, the imagery on the cover suggests everything being blown outward by a storm; combined with the logo, it perfectly captures the essence of SKWAR.

V: 首先，祝贺你们今年发行了新专辑！你们的作品节奏极快，并大量运用了电子采样。此外，你们还融合了死亡金属与朋克元素，这使你们成为一支非常出色的老派碾核乐队。你们如何看待自己的这些作品？

First of all, congratulations on releasing your new album this year! Your work is very fast-paced and uses a lot of electronic sampling. You've also been influenced by death metal and punk elements, making you a very outstanding old-school grindcore band. What are your thoughts on your own work?

S: 我们为创作过程中共同努力所取得的成果感到自豪。我们在保持碾核音乐核心本质的同时，也给予了自己充分的自由去探索各种不同的氛围。凭借丰富的经验，我们得以跳出固有框架；我们决定将采样和电子元素融入曲目之中（而不仅仅是作为曲目间的过渡），这帮助我们突破了既定的音乐标准。埃米尔自2008年起便投身于电子音乐创作，乐于将各类采样——包括原声采样——融入作品之中。SKWAR是他多年来以另一个身份“Emzo March”进行实验探索的结晶，如今终于正式向公众揭开面纱。

We are proud of the results of our collaborative work during the creative process, and of the freedom we allowed ourselves to explore diverse atmospheres while remaining true to the essence of grindcore. Our extensive experience enabled us to think outside the box; the decision to incorporate samples and electronic elements, not just between tracks, but within them, helped us push beyond established standards. Émile has been working with electronic music since 2008, and he enjoyed integrating various samples, including acoustic ones. SKWAR is the culmination of all those years of experimentation with his alter ego, Emzo March, which is finally being unveiled to the public.

V: 哪些乐队对你们产生过影响？能否列举一些你们最喜欢的乐队？

Which bands have influenced you, and could you name some of your favorites?

S: 在碾核方面，我们的灵感来源既有老派乐队，也有当代乐队，包括Terrorizer、Brutal Truth、Nasum、Pig Destroyer和Wormrot等。Fuck The Facts乐队——特别是他们的曲目"Dear Shit Book"——启发了我们如何融入电子元素；那首歌简直疯狂至极。在电子音乐方面，Émile从Drumcorps（这对我们影响很大）、Fear Factory以及Pitchshifter等音乐单位中汲取了灵感。此外，对他电子音乐风格影响较大的还有The Prodigy、Justice、Infected Mushroom和Pendulum。所有这些因素汇聚在一起，形成了我们极其多元且兼收并蓄的音乐风格。

As for the grindcore side of things, our influences range from the old-school to the contemporary. They include bands like Terrorizer, Brutal Truth, Nasum, Pig Destroyer, and Wormrot. Fuck The Facts, specifically their track "Dear Shit Book", inspired us regarding how we wanted to incorporate electronic elements; that song is absolutely insane. On the electronic front, Émile draws inspiration from acts like Drumcorps, a major influence for us, as well as Fear Factory and Pitchshifter. His primary electronic influences also include The Prodigy, Justice, Infected Mushroom, and Pendulum. All of this results in a highly eclectic mix of influences.

V: 你们看过哪些现场演出？其中哪些给你们留下了深刻印象？能否描述一下当时的现场氛围？另外，你们计划未来参加哪些音乐节？

Which live performances have you attended, and which ones left a deep

impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those events? Also, what festivals are you planning to attend in the future?

S: 2016年，The Dillinger Escape Plan在魁北克市的最后一场演出简直疯狂到了极点——当然，他们的每一场演出向来如此——而且我们当时心里清楚，这是最后一次能看到他们现场演出的机会了。最近，当Napalm Death和Pig Destroyer在魁北克市同台演出时，现场观众有的纯粹是为了Napalm Death而来；而像我们这样的观众，虽然也看Napalm Death，但主要其实是为了Pig Destroyer！！！看他们的现场演出总是一种享受，每次都能彻底震撼我们。此外，每当我们与其他碾核乐队的“兄弟们”同台演出时，大家都会有一种共鸣：在呈现各自音乐的同时，也能尽情欣赏彼此的作品。2023年，我们参加了由“东海岸碾核联盟”（East Coast Grindcore Alliance，由“全球碾核联盟”Global Grindcore Alliance 策划）在纽约举办的“Extreme OSU Fest”音乐节，那简直是一场精彩乐队云集的盛宴，一支接一支，令人大饱耳福。这是一场“战友”间的聚会，大家共享餐食、周边商品，还同台演出；那种感觉真是太奇妙了。至于未来，我们可能会参加“舍布鲁克死亡音乐节；距离我们上次在该音乐节演出已经过去两年了，那次经历令人震撼。我们还把目光投向了“Earslaughter 2027”音乐节，以及任何愿意邀请我们参演的极端音乐节。

The Dillinger Escape Plan’s final show in Quebec City in 2016 was pure madness, as all their shows were, and, on top of that, we knew it was our last chance to see them. More recently, when Napalm Death and Pig Destroyer played in Quebec City, there were those who came just for Napalm Death, and others, like us, who were there for ND, sure, but primarily for Pig Destroyer!!! It’s always a pleasure to watch them absolutely blow us away. Furthermore, whenever we play a show alongside our brothers from other grindcore bands, there’s this shared experience where we get to enjoy each other’s music while delivering our own. The Extreme OSU Fest, organized by the East Coast Grindcore Alliance (produced by Global Grindcore Alliance) in New York, which we took part in back in 2023, was an absolute feast of incredible bands, one after another. It was a gathering of brothers-in-arms, all sharing meals, merchandise, and the stage; it was truly magical. As for the future, we might be part of Sherbrooke Deathfest; it’s been two years since we last played at this festival, and that last experience was mind-blowing. We also have our sights set on Earslaughter 2027 and any extreme music festival that might want us on their bill.

V: 你们在2027年有什么新计划吗？比如创作或录制新作品？能跟大家分享一些细节吗？

What new projects do you have in the works for 2027—for instance, creating or recording any new material? Could you share a few details with everyone?

S: 我们刚结束了在魁北克的小型巡演，现在又回到了创作阶段——这可是最棒的部分！我们已经创作了三首未收录在专辑里的新歌，并在巡演期间进行了现场演绎。其中一首收录在由美国厂牌Thrones of Lies Records发行的合辑"Endless Hell Volume 1"中；该合辑已于10月31日以数字形式发布，实体版本将于11月晚些时候推出。算下来，这已经是我们在短短一个多月内发布的第二部作品了。此外，我们专辑中的一首歌还将收录在由乌克兰厂牌Good Guys Go Grind制作的合辑"Good Guys For Good Guy Volume 11"中（具体发行日期尚未确定）。目前，我们手头已有七首新歌并且正在与其他几支乐队洽谈合作发行一张“分体唱片”。敬请期待…

We’ve just wrapped up our short launch tour in Quebec, and we’re now back in the creative process, which is the best part! We already had three new tracks that aren’t on the album, which we performed live during the tour. One of these tracks is featured on the “Endless Hell Volume 1” compilation, released by the U.S.-based label Thrones of Lies Records, it came out digitally on October 31st, with physical copies to follow later in November. So, that marks our second release in just over a month. We’ll also have one of the tracks from the album included on the “Good Guys For Good Guy Volume 11” compilation, put out by Good Guys Go Grind in Ukraine (the release date is still to be determined). At the moment, we have seven new tracks, and we’ve already been in talks with a few other bands about an upcoming split release. Stay tuned …
