Today's interview is with Russian Death Metal band Septory, formed in 2003 and originally named Blasphererion and released a demo in 2004 under the name of Blasphererion, which was soon followed by the band's current name! Septory released their first EP “Rotting Humanity” in 2006, which was only two songs long but was a good example of the band's talent, followed by two official albums in 2008 - 2011, released by the Russian label Coyote Records in Russia, and two wonderful pieces of Old School Death Metal were born, the band didn't use more modern forms of composition, but rather vintage means of interpretation of their own work, and then the band collaborated with Finland's Sadistik Forest to release a Spilt album, which was then put on hiatus until 2023, the band's activities. The band went on hiatus until 2023, when they released a compilation album “Rotting Humanity”, a new single and a third album “Incinerate This World” in 2024. In 2024, they released a new single and a third album, “Incinerate This World”, but they are still the same Septory band that I know so well, and I got in touch with the members of Septory Magazine for an interview a while ago!

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Septory band was founded in 2003 and is a long-standing band. Who proposed the formation of this band?

D: 你好，兄弟！我叫Deiron，我代表我自己和整个Septory乐队，很高兴见到你。是的，你说得没错，这是我们第一次接受中国杂志的采访。我们很高兴能参加这次活动，也欢迎所有来自中国的重型音乐爱好者。我们的历史始于2005年。2003年乐队的两位成员，贝斯手Deiron和吉他手Haoth相识并开始创作受美国Death Metal流派影响的音乐素材，随后主唱兼词作者 Nirom加入了乐队。我们一起制作了三首歌曲的Demo并举办了一场音乐会。

Hello, brother! My name is Deiron, on behalf of myself and the entire Septory band, I am glad to meet you. Yes, you're right, this is the very first interview for a Chinese magazine. We are happy about this event and welcome all fans of heavy music from China. I hope that after this, we will have more friends and fans in your country.We consider the beginning of our history since 2005. In 2003, two members of band, Deiron - bass guitar and Haoth - guitar, met and began writing material influenced by the school of American death metal, then vocalist/lyricist Nirom joined the band. Together we made one demo of three songs and played one concert.

V: 你们的乐队在2003年至2005年期间名为Blasphererion，但在2005年改成了现在的名字 Septory。为什么要改名？

Your band was named Blasphererion from 2003 to 2005, but changed to its current name Septory in 2005. Why did you change the band name?

D: Blasphererion这个名字是受Deicide乐队的影响而取的。在我们开始与鼓手Dym一起进行现场表演后，我们用不同的方式创作了第一首歌并于2005年11月决定使用Septory这个名字，开始我们的旅程。Septory这个名字是独一无二的，是我自己想出来的，在重型音乐界似乎没有其他乐队用过这个名字。Blasphererion是我们从世界上三个乐队中知道的名字，因此更换“招牌”对我们来说是件好事。

The name Blasphererion was taken under the influence of the band Deicide. We were young and it seemed to us that this was enough.After we started playing live shows with drummer Dym, we composed the first songs in a different way and decided in November 2005 to take the name Septory and start our journey without copying. The name Septory is unique, it came up wıth me and it seems there is no other band with that name in the world of heavy music. Blasphererion is the name that we know from three bands in the world, so changing the "signboard" was good for us.

Your band now only has one first generation member Deiron. The other members were replaced in 2023. What caused the first generation members to leave the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

Me is the only one member of the original line-up left in the band.In general, during the active period of 2005-2013, the band had 5 different drummers, one bass player and 6 guitarists. The trio (Deiron, Haoth and Algor) which recorded and composed the first two albums and a split album, in 2013 no longer existed.Haoth started playing black metal and lost interest in death metal. Deiron helped him with concerts for his band for 1.5 years. Then I and Algor continued to play in the band Bestial Deform. But in the end, we didn't come together as a band anymore.I always had a desire to put the band back together, there were attempts in 2016, but apart from the cover song for Possessed, nothing happened. In 2023, the festival is not far from the city of St. Petersburg, offered a reunion of Septory as the part of show, and we agreed.Devourer was the first to join the band, and he became a full-fledged partner and "face" of the band. The next one was drummer Sammael, then guitarist Haelkar and bass guitarist Trivien. All the musicians are experienced and already know what to do in band, it is a pleasure to play concerts, rehearsals, and analyze new material.

V: 你们每个成员都是创作Deat Metal的资深音乐家。能介绍一下你们的创作经验吗？我相信你们的创作经验会给许多年轻音乐家带来灵感。

Each of you members is an experienced musician in creating death metal. Can you introduce your creative experience? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to many young musicians.

D: 每个人都曾是乐队的成员或者是乐队的成员。现在我提出主要想法，然后由Devourer作词，所有其他乐手在不同程度上帮助创作歌曲的整体编曲。一般来说没有什么特别的，我在创作时会听经典的Hard Rock和Metal音乐，尽量不听Death Metal。我还会通过阅读书籍和观看电影来获得灵感。

Every mucisian already was or in line-up of the bands. Now, I bring the main ideas, then Devourer writes the lyrics, and all the other musicians help to create the overall arrangement of the songs to varying degrees.In general, nothing unusual, I listen to classics of hard rock and metal music while composing material and try not to listen to death metal.

I also read books and watch movies for inspiration.

V: 你们乐队的每张专辑都有出色的录音效果。你们是在哪个录音室录制专辑的？哪位制作人为你们制作了这张专辑？

Every album of your band has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you?

S: 当我们开始制作第三张专辑"Incinerate This World"时，我们意识到我们在音乐上已经向前迈进了一大步，新歌潜力巨大，必须以最好的声音呈现给听众。我们开始在圣彼得堡的 BuzzyLick工作室录音。在录音过程中我们与一位出色的制作人Ivan 'Nord' Dmitriev合作，他认真监督每一次录音，尽可能做到干净利落。在录音过程中，Ivan简直成了乐队的另一个成员，为我们提供了很多好点子。混音和母带制作由我们的老朋友Enoth完成，他因与Rotten Coffin、Demons Of Guillotine、Gravity Rain、Funeral Rites等乐队的合作而闻名。我们对最终效果非常满意，因为我们成功地实现了真正的重型节奏，但同时我们没有过度压缩声音或使用鼓组采样，保持了现场自然的声音。

When we started working on our third album 'Incinerate This World', we realized that we had made a huge step forward musically and the new songs had so much potential that they simply had to be presented to the listener in the best possible sound incarnation. We started tracking at BuzzyLick Studio in Saint-Petersburg. During the recording sessions, we worked with a wonderful producer Ivan 'Nord' Dmitriev, who carefully monitored that each take was recorded as cleanly as possible. Ivan also literally became another member of the band during the recording, offering many great ideas. Mixing and mastering were done by our old friend Enoth, known for his work with such bands as Rotten Coffin, Demons Of Guillotine, Gravity Rain, Funeral Rites and others. We were very pleased with the final result, as we managed to achieve a really heavy groove, but at the same time we did not over-compress the sound or use drumkit sampling, maintaining a live and natural sound.

V: 你们的Logo设计非常简单，但这种设计形式是我个人最喜欢的，因为我很容易就能记住你们的名字。这个Logo是谁设计的？你们的画册设计也很精美。谁为你们设计了这些画册作品？

Your logo design is very simple, but this design form is my personal favorite because I can easily remember your name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are also beautifully designed. Who designed these album artworks for you?

D: Logo的设计和第一张专辑（World War Chaos）的设计是由Adlab-art的一位艺术家完成的，他并不听Death Metal乐，但他以这种形式呈现了Logo的可读性强，但保持了一般的 “金属”概念。一开始大家都很喜欢这个Logo，我们就采用了这个方案并一直沿用至今。“Mayhem”项目的Alexander为我们制作了第二张专辑"Seductive Art Profane"、大量海报以及网络资源的设计。2010年拼贴技术非常流行，而Alexander在这方面非常擅长。2013年的Spilt由芬兰著名艺术家Turka G. The design of the logo and the design of the first album (World War Chaos) was done by an artist of Adlab-art, who did not listen to death metal, he presented the logo in this form. Readable, but sustained in the general "metal" concept. At the very beginning, everyone liked the logo, and we settled on this option and still use it.Alexander from the Mayhem project did the second album Seductive Art Profane, a lot of posters, and the design of internet resources for us. In 2010, the collage technique was popular, and Alexander was very good at it.The split album in 2013 was designed by the famous Finnish artist Turka G. Rantanen. At first, this painting was on the poster of our tour in Finland, we liked this art and decided to buy it from Turka.The compilation Rotting Humanity (2023) and the latest Incinerate This World album (2024) were designed by Vladimir from Rotten Fantom, a very talented and popular artist in Moscow. He also designed our beers, T-shirts, and more.

V: 哲学、反社会、神秘主义是你们乐队的音乐主题。为什么选择这个音乐主题？你们想通过这个音乐主题表达什么？你们还创作了歌词。这些歌词是谁创作的？

Philosophy, Anti social, Occultism are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created lyrics. Who created these and what inspired them?

As Deiron already said, on the first two albums many lyrics were written by Haoth, who was inspired by popular ideas of black metal. Now that the band Septory has existed for more than 20 years, the topics of the lyrics have changed a little. We have become older and many topics are no longer so interesting to us, so the essence of our lyrics has become more conceptual and holistic. I wrote most of the lyrics, three songs were written by Deiron. We are inspired by the life around us, the world and how humanity interacts with this world. The album 'Incinerate This World' is entirely dedicated to the theme of evil in human nature and our inner cruelty, which gives rise to violence, wars, destroys the planet and ecology. We do not give any assessments or condemnation of what is happening, our lyrics are a kind of outside observation and philosophical reflection on the causes of evil. As you can see, we are interested in the real life around us and those problems that are eternal by their nature. We're too old to sing about occultism and pentagrams. :)

V: 你们曾与Soundage Productions、Satanath Records、Coyote Records等优秀唱片公司合作发行专辑。你是如何与这些唱片公司建立合作联系的？你对这些厂牌的工作满意吗？

You have collaborated with Soundage Productions, Satanath Records, Coyote Records and other excellent labels to release albums. How did you establish contact with these labels for cooperation? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

We are always looking for the best solution to promote our music. For the first two albums, we worked with Coyote Records, as a fairly promising label for Russian death metal. When the band reunited after 10 years of silence, the world around us changed a lot. Digital distribution and social media play a very important role now. The only thing that has remained unchanged is our desire to make our releases as high quality as possible. The third album 'Incinerate This World' was released through Soundage Productions and for the first time we were able to release our music in vinyl format. We do not plan to rest on our laurels and want to set ourselves further ambitious goals in order to make future releases even better.

First of all, congratulations to you for releasing your latest album "Incinerate This World" last year. This is a wonderful Old Shcool Deat Metal, and you can feel that you have been deeply influenced by American Death Metal, especially the influence of Deicide. The neat and dark Riff, your band also has a strong dark atmosphere, which makes your works fierce and dark. What is your opinion on your own works? Has there been any change between the new album and the old album?

We really like this album. It was invented in a fundamentally different way compared to the two previous works. It is interesting that you mentioned American death metal, especially the Florida school represented by Deicide. In fact, while working on the songs and arrangements, we did not listen to such music at all. From the very beginning, we understood that the spirit of old school cannot be conveyed by modern means and techniques. It was necessary to make the music as natural and lively as possible. We took a lot of inspiration from old classic rock because that's the type of music where everything is built on little nuances and tiny details. We did not listen to anything heavier than Metallica, we were mainly inspired by Nirvana and Foo Fighters. You can better understand the essence of this approach when listening to the album carefully. At first glance, it's pretty straightforward and very simple death metal, but you can hear a lot of subtle differences even within one riff, when you change the rhythm of the guitars a little, add accents to the drums, etc. The whole album is built on these little things.

V: 作为一支老乐队，你参加过许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象？你能介绍一下当时的现场气氛吗？2025年你打算参加哪些音乐节？

As an old band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Which music festivals are you planning to participate in in in 2025?

D: 斯洛伐克音乐节最生动的印象是2012年的Gothoom露天音乐节，我们与Behemoth和Septicflesh在同一舞台上演出。这是一个非常小的，舒适的节日在山上，旁边有一个小湖。我们住在帐篷里的领土上的节日，这样一种与音乐和自然的联系，所有人都去互相交流，这是一个真正的庆祝活动。2023年的春节，我们在家里也经历了类似的感受。2025年我们将再次在那里演出，并参加莫斯科大型音乐节“Metal Screeching”

The most vivid impression of the festival in Slovakia, Gothoom Open Air Festival 2012, where we played on the same stage with Behemoth and Septicflesh.It was a very small, cozy festival in the mountains, next to a small lake.We lived in tents on the territory of the festival, such an association with music and nature, all go and communicate with each other, it was a real celebration. We experienced similar feelings at home at the T'ma festival in 2023. In 2025 we are going to play there again and also take part in big Moscow Festival "Metal Screeching"

V: 2025年你的乐队将承担哪些新任务？例如创作或录制新歌，你能与大家分享一些信息吗？

What new tasks will your band undertake in 2025? For example, when creating or recording new songs, can you share some information with everyone?

S: 最重要的是，我们将在今年夏天发布一张新的EP。它被称为“Dawn No More”。它将以数字形式发行，也可能有CD限量版。为了支持这张EP，我们将在秋季在俄罗斯进行一次大规模巡演。我们计划发布一段主打歌的视频并将其发布在我们的YouTube频道上。总的来说工作正在全面展开，我们对此感到非常高兴。

The most important thing is that we are releasing a new EP this summer. It is called 'Dawn No More'. It will be released digitally, and there may also be a limited edition on CD. In support of the EP, we will go on a big tour of Russia in the fall. We are planning to release a video for the title track and post it on our YouTube channel. In general, the work is in full swing, and we are very happy about it.

Septory is a very excellent band, and I am a loyal fan of your band. I have heard all of your works, and I will always support and follow your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to follow and support your band through this interview. Do you have anything to say to your Chinese fan friends in the end?
