Speaking of Cuba, I wonder if you’re familiar with their metal scene. Our magazine has previously interviewed several bands from the country, so today we’d like to introduce another Cuban death metal band: Combat Noise. Formed in 1995, Combat Noise is one of the oldest and most established bands in Cuba. They released their first demo in 1996. At the time, death metal was a completely new musical style in Cuba, with very few bands of this genre. The emergence of Combat Noise shattered the prevailing perceptions of death metal in Cuba and garnered significant attention from fans. After releasing numerous demos, the band launched their first full-length album in 2004, titled “After the War... the Wrath Continues.” Self-released by the band, the album featured a framework dominated by thrash metal rhythms, filling their music with violent riffs. Combined with the brutality of death metal, this approach quickly earned the band recognition in Cuba. Subsequently, the band released several more albums, gaining further acclaim from fans and critics alike. Combat Noise has participated in various music festivals and tours in Cuba, allowing this oldest band in the country to gain recognition from fans in other nations as well. In 2025, the band released a 30th-anniversary compilation album through the Russian label Satanath Records. This album serves as the ultimate summary of Combat Noise’s 30-year history. Recently, with the assistance of Satanath Records, the magazine reached out to Combat Noise’s founder, Juan Carlos Torrente, for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans. Combat Noise was founded in 1995 and you are the oldest band in Cuba. How did you form this band in the first place?

J: 来自古巴哈瓦那的问候。这是我们首次接受中国杂志的采访，能因我们的音乐而受到关注，我们感到非常高兴和荣幸。正如你们提到的，我们是一支成立于1995年的Death Metal乐队。但我们并不是国内历史最悠久的金属乐队，当然在我们之前也有其他非常优秀的极端金属乐队。起初我们很难稳定阵容，因为当时很难弄到乐器、吉他弦、音箱、失真踏板以及配备齐全配件的鼓组。但我们全身心投入金属音乐，坚持经营乐队，至今仍在举办演出并录制优秀的专辑。

Greetings from La Havana, Cuba. This is the first time we've been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, and it's a pleasure and an honor for us to have been contacted about our music. We're a death metal band that, as you mentioned, formed in 1995. But we're not the oldest metal band in the country, and of course, there were other very good extreme metal bands before us. At the beginning, we had a lot of trouble solidifying the lineup because it was difficult to get instruments, guitar strings, amplifiers, distortion pedals, and a drum kit with all the necessary accessories. But we dedicated our lives to metal, persevered with the band, and we're still playing concerts and recording great albums.

V: 乐队第一代成员Juan Carlos Torrente和Jorge L. “Colo”为何离开乐队？其他成员是在2019年加入的吗？新成员是如何加入乐队的？你对新成员的表现满意吗？

Why did the first generation members of your band, Juan Carlos Torrente and Jorge L. "Colo," leave the band? The other members joined the band in 2019? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

J: 是的。Jorge Luis “Colo”是COMBAT NOISE现任吉他手之一，而我Juan Carlos Torrente是主唱。我们都是COMBAT NOISE的创始人，自幼相识因为我们是邻居，还读过同一所学校。这些年来，乐队阵容经历了几次变动，但每一位曾加入乐队的音乐人都贡献了自己的才华，我们对包括现任成员在内的所有人的表现都感到非常满意。

Yes. Jorge Luis "Colo" is one of the current guitarists for COMBAT NOISE, and I (Juan Carlos Torrente) am the vocalist. We're both founders of COMBAT NOISE and have known each other since we were kids, as we're neighbors and went to the same school. Over the years, there have been several lineup changes, but every musician who has been part of the band has contributed their talent, and we are very happy with the work of all of them, including the current members.

V: 你们每位成员都是拥有丰富创作经验的音乐人。能否介绍一下你们的创作经历？我相信你们的创作经历会给更多年轻音乐人带来启发！

Each of you members is a musician with rich creative experience. Can you introduce your creative experience? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to more young musicians!

J: 对我们来说，不仅要精准地演奏乐器，更要以Death Metal乐队特有的那种极致张力呈现演出，这一点至关重要。这不仅奠定了我们作为资深乐队的声誉，也无疑影响了古巴本土那些致力于极端金属音乐的新一代音乐人。

For us, it is very important not only to play our instruments with precision but also to deliver a show with all the intensity that a Death Metal band requires. This has contributed to our reputation as a veteran band and has undoubtedly influenced new musicians who cultivate extreme Metal in Cuba.

V: 你们乐队每张专辑的录音质量都在提升，当然随着时代的发展，这方面也发生了巨大变化。这张专辑是在哪家录音室录制的？是由哪位制作人操刀制作的？

The recording quality of each album by your band is improving, but of course, this has changed greatly with the development of the times. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you?

J: 当然，从我们的首张Demo磁带"Marching of Terror"（1996年）到最新专辑"30 Years of Cuba Death Metal"（2025年），我们的录音质量一直在稳步提升。这是因为随着时间的推移，我们不仅磨练了演奏技巧，还筹集资金投资于更好的录音室，并积累了丰富的经验。我们最近的三张专辑都是在DEEPBLAST录音室录制的，由COMBAT NOISE以及我们前吉他手Jorge García共同制作。

Of course, from our first demo: “Marching of Terror” (1996), to our latest album: “30 Years of Cuba Death Metal” (2025), the quality of our recordings has steadily improved. This is because, over time, we have honed our instrumental skills, raised funds to invest in better studios, and gained experience. We recorded our last three albums at DEEPBLAST STUDIOS, and they were produced by COMBAT NOISE and Jorge García, who was formerly our guitarist.

V: 你们乐队的音乐主题围绕战争展开。为什么选择这个音乐主题？你们希望通过这个主题表达什么？你们还创作了歌词部分。这些歌词是谁写的？创作灵感来自哪里？

Your band's music theme is about war. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

J: 自COMBAT NOISE成立以来，我们始终保持着乐队名称、音乐创作、成员形象、专辑封面以及歌词之间的紧密联系。歌词由我执笔。在歌词中，我描述战争的恐怖及其后果，但不采取任何政治立场。我只是叙述世界各地曾经发生和正在发生的战争行为。我的灵感源自诸如第二次世界大战、越南战争和朝鲜战争、古巴反抗西班牙的独立战争、安哥拉反抗南非的战争、美国入侵伊拉克和阿富汗等事件。

Since COMBAT NOISE was founded, we've maintained a connection between the band's name, the music we make, the members' visual image, the album covers, and of course, the lyrics. I'm the one who writes the lyrics. In them, I describe the horrors of war and its consequences without taking a political stance. I simply narrate acts of war that have occurred and are occurring around the world. I catch inspiration from events like World War II, the Vietnam and Korean Wars, the Cuban War of Independence against Spain, the Angolan War against South Africa, the US invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan, and so on.

V: 你们乐队曾与Legion of Death Records、Brutal Beatdown Records和Satanath Records等厂牌合作发行过专辑。你们是如何与这些厂牌建立联系并展开合作的？对这些厂牌的工作表现满意吗？

Your band has released albums with labels such as Legion of Death Records, Brutal Beatdown Records, and Satanath Records. How did you establish contact with these labels for collaboration? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

J: 在古巴没有唱片公司愿意发行极端金属专辑，因此我们联系了国际地下厂牌并向他们展示了我们的作品。起初我们通过信件联系他们并寄送磁带版Demo；后来则改用互联网联系。到目前为止，我们对这些厂牌的发行数量、返还给我们的唱片比例、产品品质以及对我们音乐的推广力度都感到满意。

In Cuba, there are no record labels interested in releasing extreme metal albums, so we contacted international underground labels and showed them our work. At first, we contacted them by letter and sent demos on cassettes, and later via the internet. So far, we're satisfied with the number of copies these labels release and the percentage of records they send us, as well as with the quality of the product and the distribution they give to our music.

V: 你们乐队的标志设计非常复古。是谁为你们设计的这个标志？你们的专辑封面都以战争为主题。又是谁为你们设计了这些专辑封面？

Your band's logo design is very retro. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are all about war. Who designed these album artworks for you?

J: 我们的标志是在首次演出后不久，由INHUMAN DRAWNINGS的Crislayme Castellanos设计的。起初一位朋友负责设计我们的Demo磁带和专辑封面。我会向他提供创意，而他作为Photoshop专家，负责具体设计。但随着时间的推移，我通过观察他的工作过程逐渐学会了设计，从那时起，我就一直负责COMBAT NOISE专辑的封面设计。

Our logo was designed shortly after our first concerts by Crislayme Castellanos of INHUMAN DRAWNINGS. Initially, a friend designed the covers for our demos and albums. I would give him the ideas, and he, being a Photoshop expert, would design them. But over time, I learned by watching him work, and since then, I've designed the artwork for COMBAT NOISE albums.

V: 你们的作品深受Bolt Thrower的影响，拥有复古的Riff、独奏和精彩的编曲。听起来就像亲身参与了一场残酷的战争，主唱那深沉的嘶吼也是整张专辑的一大亮点。你们如何评价自己的作品？

Your works have been deeply influenced by Bolt Thrower, with retro Riff, Solo, and wonderful arrangements. It's like personally participating in a brutal war, and the singer's deep roar is also a highlight of the entire album. What do you think of your own works?

J: 非常感谢你对乐队主唱的评价！归根结底，我们录制专辑和现场演出，都是为了满足我们对音乐的热爱。就我个人而言，我可以说我对我们的作品感到非常自豪。对我来说，没有什么比在专辑完成后一遍又一遍地聆听COMBAT NOISE的专辑更令人愉悦的了。

Thank you so much for your opinion about the vocals in the band! Above all, we record and play live to satisfy our passion for music. Personally, I can say that I'm very proud of our work. For me, there's nothing like listening to COMBAT NOISE albums over and over again after they're finished.

V: 你们参加过许多演出，哪些给你们留下了深刻印象？能否介绍一下当时的现场氛围？2026年你们有什么新的演出安排？

You have participated in many performances, which ones left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere at that time? What new performance arrangements do you have for 2026?

J: 最让我印象深刻的演出是我们首次登台的那场，它深深铭刻在我的记忆中。我们为那一天准备了很久，我们城市里的“地下室”俱乐部对此也抱有相当大的期待。我们演奏了六首曲目，我只报了歌名。演出期间，台下观众纹丝不动；没人喊叫，也没人鼓掌，甚至在我们退场后依然如此。演出结束后，我们聚集在后台，乐手们的脸上都流露出沮丧的神情，但我对他们说：“伙计们，我们表现得真的很棒。这只是漫长征战中的第一场战斗，这场战役终将以胜利告终。” 我们都笑了，然后喝得酩酊大醉。今年，2026年我们举办演唱会非常艰难，因为国家的经济形势十分严峻，这主要是由于美国的封锁和制裁。公共交通几乎瘫痪，停电更是家常便饭，且每次持续数小时。但愿局势能彻底解决，更好的日子即将到来！

The concert that impressed me the most was the first one we played, and I cherish it deep in my memories. We had been preparing for that day for a long time, and there was a certain amount of expectation at the Underground in our city. We played six songs, and I only announced the names of them. No one in the audience moved during our concert; no one shouted or applauded, not even after we left the stage. After the show, we gathered backstage, and the musicians' faces showed discouragement, but I told them, "We did really well, guys. This was the first combat in what will be a long campaign, one that will culminate in victory." And we all laughed and got drunk. This year, 2026, has been very difficult for us to give concerts because the country's economic situation is critical, mainly due to the blockade and sanctions from the USA. Public transportation is almost nonexistent, and the power outages are daily and last for many hours. Let's hope the situation is resolved once and for all, and that better times are coming!

V: 你们乐队在2026年有什么新计划吗？比如创作和录制新作品？能和大家分享一些信息吗？

Do your band have any new work to do in 2026? For example, creating and recording new works? Can you share some information with everyone?

J: 我们正在创作新作品，目标是在2026年底发行一张专辑。我目前正在收集关于西亚战争的信息，该地区涉及以色列、巴勒斯坦、黎巴嫩、伊朗、也门和美国等国家。我们还将专门探讨俄罗斯、乌克兰与北约国家之间的对峙。为了全人类的福祉，但愿这不会成为第三次世界大战的开端。

We are composing new material with the goal of releasing an album at the end of 2026. I am currently gathering information about the war in West Asia, which involves countries like Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, and the USA. We will also dedicate space to the confrontation between Russia, Ukraine, and the NATO countries. Let's hope this is not the beginning of a Third World War, for the good of humanity.

V: 古巴有不少优秀的乐队，我也了解你们国家的金属乐场景。不过，很多中国乐迷对你们国家的金属乐场景还不太熟悉。能介绍一下你们国家的金属乐场景吗？有哪些乐队值得推荐？

Cuba has some excellent bands, and I have also learned about the metal scenes in your country. However, many Chinese fans are not very familiar with the metal scenes in your country. Can you introduce the metal scenes in your country? Which bands are worth recommending?

J: 古巴每年大约举办10场金属音乐节，汇聚了国内最优秀的乐队。但眼下国家正处在艰难时期，因此今年至今尚未举办任何音乐节，而且这种情况似乎会持续到2026年底。我推荐以下本土乐队:GORE ECYCLOPEDIA、MEPHISTO、FROM THE GRAVES、SEX BY MANIPULATION以及BLINDER。

In Cuba, there are about 10 metal festivals a year that bring together the best of the national bands. But these aren't the best of times for the country, so there haven't been any festivals so far this year, and it seems this situation could continue for the rest of 2026. I can recommend national bands like: GORE ECYCLOPEDIA, MEPHISTO, FROM THE GRAVES, SEX BY MANIPULATION and BLINDER.

V: 你们是一支历史悠久且优秀的乐队，我将一直关注并支持你们。我也希望通过这次采访，吸引更多中国乐迷关注并支持你们。采访即将结束，最后想对中国的乐迷说些什么吗？

You are an ancient and excellent band, and I will always pay attention to and support your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to pay attention to and support your band through this interview.
