The interviewee today is Italian musician Massimo Pieretti. Massimo Pieretti is a very outstanding musician and composer from Italy. He released his first album "A new beginning" in 2022, which is a classic rock work with pleasant Riff and beautiful melody. After the release of this album, it received a lot of attention and support from fans, and more fans began to look forward to his next work. In 2024, "Creature of The Night" was released, which is still a classic rock work. After the release of these two albums, Massimo Pieretti received more attention and also began to cooperate with some well-known musicians, such as John Hacking. Ett, Rob Townsend, Nick Fletcher, Dominic Sanderson, Imaginaerium's Laura Piazzai, Ray Weston, Tom Hyatt of Echolyn, and Anglagar's Mattias Olsson of Anglagar and other musicians collaborated to release Massimo Pieretti's latest album "Things to Live" this year. On the occasion of the release of the new album, Mr. Massimo Pieretti also contacted the magazine for an exclusive interview!

Hello Massimo Pieretti, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is your first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans. Massimo Pieretti band was founded that year? Why did you name the band after yourself?

M: 你好，感谢这次机会！是的，这是我的首次亮相，能参与其中深感荣幸。向所有读者致意，希望他们能被吸引，去发掘这位意大利艺术家——我概念音乐部分源自Progressive Rock、电影配乐与Experimental Music的启发，尤其注重精妙的编曲与具有社会意识的歌词创作。这是我的个人音乐计划，通过它我尝试表达音乐理念并与众多意大利及国际艺术家合作；我的两张专辑共邀约70位音乐人参与，包括：Echolyn乐队的Ray Weston与Tom Hyatt、大师John Hackett、Anglagard鼓手Mattias Olsson等众多音乐人。

Hello and thank you for this opportunity! Yes, this is my first time and I'm honored to participate. Greetings to all your readers, I hope they'll be intrigued enough to discover an Italian artist who creates conceptual music inspired in part by progressive rock, music for film, and experimental music, with a particular focus on sophisticated arrangements and socially conscious lyrics. This is my solo project, through which I try to express my musical ideas and through which I collaborate with many Italian and international artists; around 70 artists have collaborated on my two albums including: Ray Weston & Tom Hyatt from the band Echolyn, Maestro John Hackett, Anglagard’s drummer Mattias Olsson and many many more.

You are the only one in the band, so you can create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process?

The project originally developed around me as a composer/keyboardist and my main collaborator, Gianluca Del Torto, bassist and (along with myself) lyricist. After the initial demos, I began pitching these songs to various well-known and respected artists over the years. For my first album, A New Beginning (2022), I turned primarily to my friends in Rome, while for my second album, The Next Dream (released last May), I drew on international musicians. I also have a band here in Rome with which I perform live, centered around another close collaborator Germana Noage on vocals and other Roman musicians. With this band we made the live album Things to Live!, available digitally on the Bandcamp platform (https://massimopieretti.bandcamp.com/). Both the music and all the arrangements were conceived and created by myself, while the lyrics were drafted by me and completed together with Gianluca. My sister Patrizia also collaborated on the song "I dreamed of flying"from The Next Dream. I compose primarily on the piano; some songs began with a bass riff (Oh Father and Family and Business, for example), while others were composed on synthesizers (‘’Out of this world’’). On my second album (The Next Dream), I experimented with a new composition method, starting with recording my vocal melodies (usually on my phone) and then transposing them onto the instrument.

Your work is excellent in recording. Which studio did you record your album in? Which producer made the album for you?

M: 非常感谢！我主要在自家小型录音室完成基础轨道录制，随后将素材发送给各乐手进行分轨录制。整个过程均远程协作完成，完成的轨道再由乐手们传回给我。部分键盘声部（三角钢琴、电钢琴Fender Rhodes、哈蒙德风琴）由我在罗马两间工作室（Zoo Symphony Studio与StudioSette）及圣塞西莉亚音乐学院（“A new beginning”录制）重新录制。两张专辑均由Underworld Studio的Francesco Mattei混音母带处理，并由我亲自制作。专辑“The Next Dream”与“Things to Live!”由Cromosoma M唱片公司发行。

Thank you very much! I record mainly in my small home studio, then send the basic tracks to the various musicians who record their parts. Everything happens remotely, with the tracks being sent back to me. Some keyboard parts (Grandpiano, El.piano Fender Rhodes, and Hammond organ) were then re-recorded by me in two studios here in Rome (Zoo Symphony Studio and StudioSette) and at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory (A new beginning). Both albums were mixed and mastered by Francesco Mattei of Underworld Studio and produced by myself. The Next Dream and Things to Live! are published by the Cromosoma M record label.

How did you establish contact and collaborate with a large number of musicians whom you have collaborated with?

M: 我最初联系了多年来结识的罗马音乐圈朋友。后来我开始在线上与世界各地的艺术家（主要来自前卫音乐圈）建立联系，直接邀请他们为我的歌曲创作。我发现许多朋友都尊重并欣赏我作为作曲家的才华。

I initially contacted musician friends from the Roman scene I'd met over the years. Later, I began to connect online with artists from around the world (mainly from the progressive scene), simply suggesting they contribute to my songs. I discovered I had many friends who respected and appreciated me as a composer.

V: 你的音乐主题是什么？为何选择这个主题，又想通过它表达什么？你同时创作了歌词部分，这些歌词的灵感来源是什么？

What is the theme of your music about? Why did you choose this music theme, and what do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. What was the inspiration for these lyrics?

M: 我的音乐灵感源于“分形”概念——这是我在音乐学院研习的作曲技法，通过叠加不同音域的音乐轨迹，营造出“纵向”与“环绕”的声场（乐器相互交融，形成独特而包覆性的“环绕”效果)。我的两张专辑均属概念性作品。“A New Beginning”主要为自传体，我在此坦诚剖白个人经历。其他歌曲则更具“社会性”，例如"In November"（反对暴力侵害女性）、"Out of This World"（探讨民族团结）以及"A New Beginning Pt. A & B"（倡导尊重他人）。"The Next Dream"（我的第二张专辑）是一则奇幻故事，描绘了梦境般的世界及其栖居其中的生灵——这些夜间伴随我们的存在，有时几乎映射出我们所处的现实社会。专辑构建了一个完整的故事框架，如同暗黑音乐剧般拥有独特的幻想角色——我本人或任何人类——如同但丁笔下的维吉尔般担任向导，在事件展开过程中呈现出丰富场景与角色群像。

My music is inspired by the concept of the "Fractal," a compositional technique I studied at the conservatory that relies on layering various musical tracks in different ranges to create a "vertical" and "circular" sound (with the instruments blending together and creating a very unique and enveloping "surround" effect). Both of my albums are conceptual. A New Beginning is primarily autobiographical, in which I lay myself bare, talking about my personal history. Other songs have a more "social" nature, such as "In November" (against violence against women), "Out of This World" (about unity between peoples), and "A New Beginning Pt. A & B" (about respect for others). The Next Dream (my second album) is a fantasy tale dealing with a dreamlike world and the creatures that inhabit it and accompany us at night while, at times, almost echoing the society we live in. The album builds on a proper story, a dark musical with its own fantasy character -myself or any of us human beings- functioning as a guide much in the same way of Dante’s Virgil along with a whole range of scenes and characters featuring in the unfolding of the events.

I saw that your work has been released in CD version. Did you distribute these CDs yourself? Or was it issued by a brand for you? How did you get in touch with this brand for cooperation?

V: 你为乐队设计过Logo吗？这个Logo是谁设计的？你们的专辑封面都是黑白的，设计风格相当阴郁。这些封面是谁设计的？

Have you designed a logo for the band? Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are all in black and white, which is a very gloomy design. Who designed these artworks for you?

M: “A new beginning”的平面设计由意大利艺术家Maria Serra根据我的指示精心策划，涵盖了极暗调的封面、内页（CD与黑胶唱片）以及所有标识设计。“The Next Dream”的封面（明亮版）灵感源自我友人Kai Strandskov在美国西海岸坎农海滩拍摄的照片，我对其进行修改以契合整体概念。封底（深色版）采用艺术家Angela Donatelli的原创作品，经我修改以契合最终传达的信息。“Things to Live!”封面采用乐队现场黑白照片。

The graphic design of A new beginning was curated, following my instructions, by the Italian artist Maria Serra, both for the very dark cover, the inside of the booklet (CD and LP), and the logos. The front cover of The Next Dream (the bright one) is inspired by a photo taken by my friend Kai Strandskov at Cannon Beach, on the West Coast of the United States, which I then modified to fit the concept. The back cover (the dark one) is an original opera by artist Angela Donatelli, which I modified to fit the final message. Things to Live! has a black and white photo of my band live as its cover.

V: 你的作品旋律优美动人。看来你在旋律创作上倾注了大量心血，作品氛围营造也极为出色。清澈的女声直击心灵，录音效果清晰透亮，每个细节都清晰可辨。你如何评价自己的作品？

Your work has a beautiful melody. It seems that you have put a lot of effort into the melody, and your work is also excellent in terms of atmosphere. The clear female voice gives a feeling of hitting the heart, and your recording is very clear. Every detail can be heard very clearly. What is your opinion on your work?

M: 非常感谢！我向来不爱夸耀自己的作品，这不符合我的本性。我能说的是，这个项目源于表达我音乐及其他想法的渴望，我像对待亲生孩子般悉心呵护它，全身心投入其中。每个细节都经过精心雕琢，只为确保最终成果能给听众带来深刻触动。在意大利，我们称之为“a regola d'arte”（艺术范式）。

Thank you so much! I don't like to brag about my work; it's not in my nature. What I can say is that my project was born from the need to express my ideas (musical and otherwise), and I nurture it like my child, dedicating myself body and soul. Everything is studied down to the smallest detail to ensure the final result has a significant impact on the listener. Here in Italy, we say ‘’a regola d’arte’’ ("artistic").

V: 你参加过哪些音乐节？哪些音乐节给你留下深刻印象？能否描述当时的现场氛围？2025年即将结束，2026年还有哪些音乐节邀请你参加？

What music festivals have you participated in? What music festivals have left a deep impression on you, and can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? 2025 is coming to an end, what music festivals invite you to participate in 2026?

M: 去年夏天，我与Gothic Metal乐队Noage（我的另一支乐队）在意大利北部的Wondergate音乐节演出。这场重要盛会还汇聚了Stratovarius、Sonata Arctica和Rhapsody of Fire等传奇乐队。从舞台规模到观众氛围，这都是我职业生涯中最具分量的现场演出，将永远铭刻在我的记忆中。在个人项目方面，我已在本地策划数场音乐会，2024年4月更在罗马历史中心区宏伟的Arciliuto剧院举办了专辑发布派对。我始终在寻找合作场地与音乐节——未来会带来什么惊喜？请大家为我祈祷吧！

Last summer, I performed with my gothic metal band Noage (another project of mine) at the Wondergate Festival here in North of Italy, a very important event that also featured historic bands like Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, and Rhapsody of Fire. It's the most significant live event I've ever played, starting with the stage and the audience, and it will always remain in my memory. With my solo project, I've produced a few concerts in my area, and the relese-party took place in April 2024 at the historic Arciliuto theater in Rome's historic center, a magnificent location. I'm always looking for locations and festivals to collaborate with; who knows what the future will bring... Keep your fingers crossed for me!

V: 2025至2026年间你还有哪些新任务？能否与大家分享相关信息？例如创作并录制新作品？

What new tasks do you have to undertake from 2025 to 2026, and can you share some information with everyone? For example, creating and recording new works?

M: 我刚参与了挚友兼合作者Germana Noage的首支个人单曲''White Demon''的制作，负责键盘演奏及编曲工作（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Okypy1KAOU）。几周前我开始筹备新专辑，暂定名为"Age of Man"，这将完成关于人际关系的主题三部曲。新专辑将与前两张作品截然不同，尤其在音乐风格上——它会采用更精简的编制，呈现更直击人心的创作。

I just collaborated on the production of ''White Demon'', the first solo single of my dear friend and collaborator Germana Noage, of which I played the keyboards and took care of the arrangements (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Okypy1KAOU). A few weeks ago I started working on my new album, provisionally titled "Age of Man," which completes a conceptual trilogy about relationships between people. It will be quite different from the first two albums, especially musically; it will be a more direct work with a smaller lineup than the first two.
