传奇 - 英国Death/Thrash Metal乐队Cancer专访

说到英国的乐队，相信大家一定都非常的来了解，很多来自英国的乐队在中国都非常的有名气，那么今天就为大家采访到了一支英国的传奇Death/Thrash Metal乐队Canncer，作为英国最有名气，成立时间最久的老牌乐队，Cancer早在1987就已经成立了，1988年乐队发行他们的第一张Demo作品“No Fuckin Cover”，虽然这张作品中的两首歌曲制作比较粗糙，但是还是展现出乐队的才华，1990年乐队的第一张专辑也是乐队的经典专辑“To the Gory End”在英国的Vinyl Solution厂牌发行，开场曲“Bloodbath”和“To The Gory End”紧随其后，“C. F. When it comes to United Kingdom bands, I'm sure you're all very familiar with the fact that a lot of bands from the UK are very famous in China, so today we have an interview with Canncer, a legendary British Death/Thrash Metal band. As one of the UK's most famous and longest established veteran bands, Canncer was founded as early as 1987. In 1988 the band released their first demo, "No Fuckin Cover", which featured two songs that were roughly produced but still showed the band's talent, and in 1990 the band's first album, the classic "To the Gory End", was released on the UK's best-selling album "The Gory End". The band's first album and classic "To The Gory End" was released in 1990 on the Vinyl Solution label in the UK, followed by the opening tracks "Bloodbath" and "To The Gory End". "C.F.C" is becoming a gold standard for death metal, with a catchy rhythm and a comfortable tone, without too much showmanship, highlighting the pure crushing and roughness of the charms. Arriving at the end of Gore is also a product of Death Metal's glory days, it's raw and brutal enough to stand the test of time as well as other classic albums, and it's a must-have for many fans of extreme metal, and in the nineties, when there were so many different productions, the mileposts of albums were overwhelming. The release of this album also heralded the beginning of a great, classic saga, and after the success of the first album the band released their second official album "Death Shall Rise" in 1991, and those who have heard this album have been impressed by the amazing ear-catching arrangements of guitarist James Murphy. The second album was more subdued and more Death Metal than the first, with a style closer to the American Florida Death Metal, countless classic riffs superimposed on the classic cover, making it a memorable album for countless Dead fans. After the release of this album, guitarist James Murphy quit the band, which was a bitter blow to all Cancer fans, but the band quickly found a replacement in Barry Savage, who would go on to release his third album "The Sins of Mankind" in 1993. Sins of Mankind", the third album of 1993, the elements of Death Metal were still predominant, with more Thrash Metal riffs or simple rhythms than before, and a clear focus on atmosphere and melody in the guitar playing. The raw production also emphasises the importance of lowering the heaviness and changing the feel, but adds a nice aggression to the music. After the release of their third album, the band broke up in 1996 and did not reunite until 2003, after which they released the EP "Corporation$" in 2004 and their fifth album "Spirit in Flames" in 2005. Hello all members of Cancer, thank you very much for taking part in the interview with Volcano Magazine, it's an honor to be interviewed by such a great band like you, first of all say hello to all your fans in China, Cancer was founded in 1987 is a long history of the oldest band in the world, who was the one who proposed the formation of this band in the first place you? I think this is a very distant story, do you still remember the scene, who came up with the name Cancer?

Thanks for the interview! We can’t wait to play our first shows in China! The band was created in Telford (England) by John Walker (guitarist, vocalist and main songwriter), Carl Stokes (drums) and Ian Buchanan (bass) in 1987. As far as I know, it was a friend of the band called Decker who proposed the name Cancer during a drinking session when they were trying to find the right moniker. They were trying to come up with the most brutal name and he was like “why don’t you just call yourselves Cancer?”, they thought people would remember the name and I guess they were right!

Your band is now down to the first generation of John Walker, with the other two members only joining the band in 2022, and of course as a veteran band it's a very normal thing to change members, you've changed a lot of members, how did the new members join the band? Are you happy with their work?

Up until Gabriel and I joined the band, it was mostly the same core line-up: John, Carl and Ian, other than Adam, the bass player who played on the first reunion (2003-2006), and then a bunch of different guitar players over the years. I already played with John in another band (Liquid Graveyard) and since he knew I was a fan of the Cancer, we live in the same city, etc I guess I was the most obvious choice. Gabriel is an old friend of mine, he had done some studio work for one of my other projects (Eternal Storm) and I’m very close to Wormed, one of the other bands he’s in, so I knew everything would be supersmooth with him in the band. We played the first show as a trio, then got Miguel (who also plays in Wormed) as second guitar player shortly before our show at Uk Deathfest and he spent around a year and a half with us and recorded the two songs that appeared on the ‘Peace Till Death’ split until he left the band earlier this year. Alberto, who I play in other bands with, helped us on the first show we played in Valencia this year and then Robert joined the band in spring, when we were recording the new album.

Can you describe how you create your songs? Your valuable experience will inspire a lot of Chinese musicians, and your albums are great in terms of recording, which studios did you record your albums in, and which producers did the work for you!

John comes up with the riffs and themes at home and then sends us a recording of the basic structure of the song, just a guitar track. With that, Gabriel programs some drums and once I get that, I start to work on my bass lines and then all of us get together in the same room and work on the arrangements together. John is always trying to make the most out of every song so he spends a lot of time working on the lyrics, the phrasing, small tweaks on the riffs etc. Our new lead guitar player Robert joined right around the time we started tracking drums, but he wrote all his solos very efficiently! The first two albums were recorded/produced by Scott Burns (‘To The Gory End’ in Wales and ‘Death Shall Rise’ at Morrisound in Florida), then Simon Efemey did ‘The Sins of Mankind’, ‘Black Faith’ (recorded at the impressive Great Linford Manor and then mixed by Sank at Nick Mason’s Britannia Row, I wish I could travel back in time and attend those sessions!) and the sixth album ‘Shadow Gripped’, Nick Hemingway did the fifth album ‘Spirit in Flames’. We have produced the upcoming seventh album ourselves with Simón Da Silva taking care of the recording and editing at The Empty Hall Studio in Madrid: we had already worked with him on the split we did with Autopsy, Morta Skuld and Static Abyss last year and really liked the experience, so we were happy to work with him again. We still have to discuss who will mix and master the album, but we have a couple of really exciting names in mind.

Gore, Horror, Death, Society are some of your musical themes, why did you choose them? What do you want to express through these themes? You also write lyrics, who writes these lyrics? Who wrote the lyrics and what inspired them?

Most of the band members are fans of Hammer movies and other horror classics from George A. Romero, John Carpenter, The Exorcist, Robocop, Hellraiser and all that jazz. John is the main writer and has expanded his topics and sources of inspiration over the years, as the real world is unfortunately full of dreadful stories which one can write many songs about.

Your logo design is very simple, but this form of design is one of my personal favorite way of designing because I can easily remember your band name, who designed this logo for you? I'm also impressed by your album artwork, especially the artwork of your early albums is really great, I'm very impressed by the artwork of your 1990, 1991 and 1995 albums, and the clown of the 1995 album "Black Faith" scares me a lot, I'm very impressed by the artwork of your earlier albums, I'm very impressed by the artwork of your earlier albums. Of course the artwork for your later albums is much more elaborate, which artist designed the artwork for you? What was the inspiration for the artwork?

I can’t remember who designed the logo, my bad! But I agree that it is very iconic and easy to read, and at the same time pretty different to many other extreme logos. Artwork-wise there is a bit of everything: ‘To The Gory End’ was done by Carl Stokes (the band’s original drummer) and it’s obviously a tribute to ‘Dawn of the Dead’; Junior Tomlin did our sophomore album and I can’t remember who did ‘Black Faith’, but I know for a fact that the band wasn’t happy with it at all, they had a different idea and once the label convinced them to follow the clown motive, they were supposed to get the creepy illustration in the back cover but then East West hired another artist and forced them to use the one that got printed with the logo change etc. The old classic situation with major labels in which the artists lose control with a lot of things…

Your band broke up twice, in 1996 and 2006, what caused you to break up? And what made you start the band again?

It’s difficult to keep a band together for such a long time, between different opinions/points of view, personal lives, the everchanging music business, how exhausting touring can be…being in a band can be way harder than a lot of people think. The band was pretty disappointed with the way the record label handled the ‘Black Faith’ cycle, had several management changes etc and decided to call it a day. Carl convinced John to reform the band around 2003, but that reunion was pretty short lived, but I am not the right person to talk about what happened. In 2013 it was the reissue of the first three albums with the German label Cyclone Empire what made the original line-up give it another go.

V: 您曾与EastWest、Restless Records、Vinyl Solution、Peaceville Records等唱片公司合作发行过专辑，您是如何与这些唱片公司取得联系并合作的？您对他们的作品满意吗？

You have released albums with labels such as EastWest, Restless Records, Vinyl Solution, Peaceville Records, etc., how did you get in touch with these labels to work together? Were you satisfied with their work?

Things are great with Peaceville, they’ve always been one of my favourite labels and it is so easy to work with them. It’s good that they still have a small roster, it makes it feel more like a family thing as opposed to other labels who have zillions of bands and look almost like a metal factory. Communication with Paul is easy and he’s also a big music fan as well and he’s open to crazy ideas like the split we just did with Autopsy, Morta Skuld and Static Abyss. Restless and Vinyl Solution were also great from what I heard, but East West was very difficult to deal with…it’s a major label after all and extreme metal didn’t exactly match their expectations. I think that was an experiment during the 90’s that only a few bands experienced (if I remember correctly: Morbid Angel, Carcass, Entombed, Sepultura, Cathedral and Cancer-) and of course it didn’t work well for anyone involved. On the plus side, Cancer had a great budget that made it possible for the band to record at a great studio, mix the album with Sank…so not all of that was awful.

V: 你们来自英国，但现在搬到了西班牙，为什么你们搬到西班牙？新成员都来自西班牙吗？

You are from the UK but you have now moved to Spain, why do you want to live in Spain? Are all the new members from Spain?

Yes, all of us are based in Spain now. Our drummer Gabriel lives in La Rioja, around 400 km north from Madrid, where the rest of us live. John met his wife Raquel when her band supported Cancer during some Spanish dates here and decided to leave England around 20 years ago. I guess the food and weather are too good to say no to and if love’s also involved… ;)

First of all, congratulations on the release of your latest Spilt album "Peace Till Death" in 2023. You are a world-class band with countless fans all over the world. You are the perfect fusion of Death Metal and Thrash Metal, with both the energy of Thrash Metal and the heaviness and brutality of Death Metal. John Walker's singing adds horror and atmosphere to your music. Your works always remind me of the works of Sepultura and Death, and even more American bands, but you are different from other bands! But compared to other bands, you have your own unique feeling, I can easily identify your works in 100 albums, what do you think of your works? Is there any change in the new album compared to the old album?

Thank you so much for your kind words, we really appreciate them! I think Cancer’s “secret ingredient” is to make catchy and brutal riffs, to make everything sound vicious and memorable without any wank or fat. We want people to bang their heads like crazy when they see us live and John’s vocals are very easy to recognize and understand. At the same time, the band isn’t afraid of incorporating new elements, as we are all very open-minded musicians.

V: 你们在世界各地巡演和参加过很多音乐节，而且你们都是每个音乐节的重要嘉宾，哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻印象，能描述一下音乐节的氛围吗？

You guys have played a lot of tours and festivals all over the world, and you've been important guests at every single one of them, what festivals have impressed you and can you describe the atmosphere?

My favourite festivals so far have been Finnish Deathfest, Maryland Deathfest and Dortmund Deathfest, I believe. Yes, we play at most of the Deathfests, I believe it’s another perk of the band’s name, haha. Monterrey, São Paulo, Almería and Castellhell were also incredible…to be honest we have been very lucky everywhere and the fans have accepted this new line-up incredibly well, considering how distrusting most people in the community are whenever a “classic” band has a line-up change and that we lost two thirds of the original line-up, but I guess people see we do this passionately, respecting the band’s legacy and that John still has a great time on stage. Regarding previous shows, John always speaks fondly of the first time the band played at Metal Days in Slovenia, Symbolic Open Air in the Czech Republic and also their appearances at the Milwaukee Metal Fests.

V: 您的乐队在2024年准备什么新东西吗？比如创作、录制一些新歌、发行新专辑或参加更多音乐节，您能透露一些信息吗？

Is there anything new your band is working on for 2024? Like writing, recording some new songs, releasing a new album or playing more festivals, can you reveal some information to people?

D: 是的！我们在6月初录制完了专辑，正如我所说，我们目前正在决定与谁合作录制这张专辑，接下来的几个月我们会有几场演出，首先是7月份的中国巡演，然后是目前在西班牙、葡萄牙、美国和英国的一些额外演出。今年我们会轻松一点，这样明年新专辑发行后，我们就可以尽可能多地在更多地方演出！

Yes! We finished recording the album in early June, as I said we are currently deciding who we will mix the album with and we have few shows in the next months, starting with our Chinese dates in July and then some additional appearances in Spain, Portugal, USA and the UK for now. We are taking things a bit easier this year so we can play in as many places as possible next year after the release of the new record!

V: 我知道你们乐队很快就要来中国巡演了，这是你们乐队第一次来中国，你们的到来让很多中国粉丝兴奋不已，你们对这次中国巡演有什么期待？你对中国了解多少？

I know that your band is coming to China soon for your tour, it's the first time your band has visited China and your arrival has made a lot of Chinese fans very excited, what are you looking forward to on this China tour? What do you know about China?

D: 这是我第一次访问亚洲，我非常期待这些演出！我在Mortiferum、Grave Miasma和Persefone的朋友都对他们的中国之行赞不绝口，我迫不及待地想去探索你们美丽的国家，了解更多美味的美食和文化！我也很高兴终于能亲眼看到Mvltifission 的现场表演，希望能发现更多新的优秀中国乐队，也买一些周边商品 :)

As this is my very first time I ever visit Asia, I am really looking forward to these shows! My friends in Mortiferum, Grave Miasma and Persefone all spoke very highly of their Chinese dates and I can’t wait to discover your beautiful country and learn more of your delicious cuisine and culture! I am also very excited to finally see Mvltifission live and hope to discover some more new great Chinese bands and buy some merch, too :)

Cancer is a very, very good band, and it's been a great tour for you guys to come to China, and you've enriched the Chinese market, and I'm really looking forward to meeting you guys and talking to you in China, is there anything you'd like to say to your Chinese fans in closing
