The band we interviewed today is Fleshmanled, a Brutal Death Metal band from the United States. Julian, Nate Pierce, and Moe Gonzales formed the band at the end of 2018. Due to their similar interest in Brutal Death Metal from the late 1990s/early 21st century, the band was successfully formed. At first, the band covered songs similar to those of bands like Morbid Angel. Soon after, the band began creating their own works and recording some demos, which were also included in the band's 2023 EP album "Agonizing Paranoia". This EP album began recording in 2019, but due to the pandemic, the band did not release it until 2023. Released by the Indonesian label Brutal Mind, this album received widespread acclaim after its release, with songs played more compactly, clearly, and executed more cruelly. Improvisational repetition has aggression, cruelty, and heaviness. After the successful release of this album, the band released their first official album "Morphing into Despied Victimology" this year. This time, the famous American label New Standard Elite contacted Julian and Fernando for an exclusive interview on the occasion of the release of the new album!

Hey, man, it's great to meet you, and thanks so much for joining us for this interview. I believe this is your band's first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine, right? First off, say hi to all your Chinese fans. Fleshmangled was formed back in 2018, making you a pretty seasoned band. How did you guys originally come together to form the band?

J: 你好，来自美国各地，我们是在2018年底左右成立的，当时我通过社交媒体认识了我们的原歌手Nate Pimentel。我们对90年代末/21世纪初的残酷死亡有着相似的兴趣并想组建一支乐队；我从高中就认识我们最初的鼓手Moe Gonzales，我们过去常常即兴演奏Morbid Angel和Cannibal的老歌，所以让他加入乐队是一件轻而易举的事。在那里，我们录制了一些极其原始和混乱的排练Demo并创作了四首歌曲，这些歌曲被收录在“Agonizing Paranoia”ep中，我们于2019年开始录制，但由于新冠肺炎和其他一些延迟，该ep于2023年晚些时候发布。

Howdy from all the way in the US, we formed around the end of 2018 when I met our original vocalist Nate Pimentel through social media. We shared a similar interest in late 90s/early 2000s brutal death and wanted to make a band; I had already known our original drummer Moe Gonzales from high school and we used to jam old Morbid Angel and Cannibal songs so getting him in the band was a no brainer. From there we recorded a few extremely raw and messy rehearsal demos as well as wrote the four songs that made it onto the “Agonizing Paranoia” ep, which we began recording in 2019 but due to covid as well as some other delays was released much later in 2023.

Your band now has only Julian as the original member, with all other members having been replaced. Why did the first generation of members leave the band? How did the new members join the band, and are you satisfied with their work? You currently don't have a drummer—are you looking for a new one?

Nate left the band in early 2022 because he joined the air force, and then Moe left the band in 2023 due to differing interests/priorities, however I still remain very close friends with almost all ex members of the band. Kian, the drummer on the newest release, joined the band in 2023 almost immediately after Moe stepped down, as I had already played with him in his previous project called Putrid Tomb. About a year later, we found Nando and Dom, our second guitarist and our bassist through social media, definitely very satisfied with their work in the band. And yes, we are still looking for a new drummer.

I sent their drummer Kian a message online saying I was interested in joining the band if there was an opportunity and luckily there was. I’m still surprised that Julian's satisfied with my playing at times.

Could you tell us about your creative process? You just released your first full-length album this year, “Morphing into Despised Victimology.” Did the creative process for this album go smoothly?

The creative process for writing this album was incredible, Kian and I spent hours upon hours going over the fine details over how each part of each song should sound like and be structured. We worked together very well, especially given the circumstances of us having to write long distance with him going to school in Northern California, while I was still located in SoCal, I’d say it went very smoothly creatively.

Every track you've produced has outstanding recording quality. Which studio did you record your album at? Who was the producer for your album? How is the recording process for your new album progressing?

Thank you! We recorded up in San Luis Obispo at our friend Michael Foster’s studio, and he mixed the album as well. The master was done by Sasha Borovykh of TsunTsun productions, mostly known for his production work for bands like Cerebral Effusion and Epicardiectomy. As of now we are not working on a new album yet since the release of Morphing into Despised Victimology, as we have not found a replacement drummer yet.

V: 你的Logo设计真的很酷。谁为你设计的？你的专辑封面病得很严重。谁为你设计的？

Your logo design is really cool. Who designed it for you? Your album artwork is seriously sick. Who designed it for you?

J: 谢谢！这个Logo实际上是我高中时的前女友做的，然后专辑的艺术是由Jon Zig做的。

Thank you! The logo was actually done by an ex-girlfriend of mine back in high school, and then the album art was done by Jon Zig.

Your 2023 EP “Agonizing Paranoia” was released through Indonesia's Brutal Mind label, while your 2025 album came out on your home country's New Standard Elite label. Both are outstanding labels. How did you connect with and collaborate with these two labels? Are you satisfied with their work?

I came into contact with Brutal Mind after they had messaged me a few times on instagram asking about my music, and then New Standard Elite we messaged a few years later through email with a few demos of newer music that we were working on for Morphing into Despised Victimology. I’d say I’m satisfied with both labels’ work, they’ve done a great job at promoting our band and have absolutely helped us to move this project forward.

V: Anti-religion, Society, Gore这些都是你的音乐主题。你为什么选择这样的主题，你想通过它们表达什么？你也写了歌词是谁写的，是什么启发了你？

Anti-religion, Society, Gore these are your musical themes. Why did you choose such themes, and what do you aim to express through them? You also wrote the lyrics—who composed them, and what inspired them?

J: 反宗教的东西主要是在旧的材料上，我不能说太多，因为我对那些歌词没有任何意见。至于社会/血腥的东西，Kian和我想表达很多社会评论，而不会牺牲你在brutal death metal歌词中通常想要的任何震惊因素或极端性。

The anti religious stuff was mainly on the older material, I can’t speak much for that since I didn’t have any input on those lyrics. As for the society/gore stuff, Kian and I wanted to express a lot of social commentary without sacrificing any of the shock factor or extremity that you’d typically want in brutal death metal lyrics.

V: 你的乐队参加了哪些现场表演？哪些给你留下了深刻的印象？你能描述一下那些演出的气氛吗？2025年你被邀请参加哪些演出？

Which live performances has your band participated in? Which ones left a deep impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those shows? What gigs have you been invited to in 2025?

J: 们在南加州和周边各州演出了很多节目，我想说我们最喜欢的节目对我们的一些影响最大，比如To Violently Vomit, Condemned, Internal Bleeding和Immortal Suffering.。从氛围上讲，我会说这取决于节目，但在很大程度上，它与通常的death metal节目差不多，只是通常是一段美好的时光，乐队成员和粉丝之间有很多饮酒和社交活动。2025年，我们唯一要做的节目是11月6日在德克萨斯州举行的New Standard Elite fest。

We’ve played a lot of shows in Southern California and the surrounding states, I’d say my favorite shows we’ve played have been opening up for some of our biggest influences, such as To Violently Vomit, Condemned, Internal Bleeding, and Immortal Suffering. Atmosphere wise I’d say it depends on the show, but for the most part it's about the same as a usual death metal show, just generally a good time, plenty of drinking and socializing amongst band members and fans. In 2025, the only show we’re doing is New Standard Elite fest over in Texas on November 6th.

Out of all the shows we played since joining the band, our first show in Los Angeles with the new lineup for the Album would be my favorite. It was nice to play on a stage properly for the first time and a nice introduction to the community for brutal death metal in our area.

What new projects does your band have planned for 2025? For instance, creating and recording new material can you share any details with us?

J: 目前除了玩New Standard Elite Fest之外，我们在2025年没有其他计划，但我的其他项目中有很多音乐，比如Hostile Deviancy和一个名为Kralizec的新black metal项目。

There’s currently nothing else planned for us in 2025 besides playing New Standard Elite Fest, but I have plenty of music coming out through my other projects such as Hostile Deviancy and a new black metal project called Kralizec.

I have a solo death/grind project named Zoochosis that's taking me longer than I'd like to admit. Hopefully I'll have something for the new year if any of it sounds cool enough.
