今天采访到的是来自加拿大的著名Brutal/Technical Death Metal乐队Cryptopsy，组建于1988年的Cryptopsy乐队是加拿大非常优秀乐队，他们如同加拿大Death Metal的一面旗帜被各国歌迷追随，与同样来自加拿大kataklysm乐队一起创造出一个全新的Death Metal流派，最初乐队取名为Obsessive Compulsive Disorder，，不久之后乐队更名为Necrosis，乐队以Necrosis的名义在1991年发行了一张正式专辑“Realms of Pathogenia”，1992年乐队发行了Demo作品“Necrosis”之后这次更名为Gomorra，但是不久之后乐队再次更名，也就是大家现在熟知的Cryptopsy乐队，1993年乐队发行了第一张Demo作品“Ungentle Exhumation”便收到了众多歌迷和乐评人的关注，1994年乐队在德国Invasion Records厂牌发行的第一张正式专辑“Blasphemy Made Flesh”引起了非常多的关注，浓重的黑暗氛围，精湛的器乐演奏，复杂的编曲，接近疯狂的演唱，演绎出这个世界上最残暴的作品，更多国歌迷开始熟知Cryptopsy乐队的是他们1996年发行的经典专辑“None So Vile”，一连串暴风雨般的音符扑面而来，不单单是震撼着你的听觉神经，而且足以使你的心随着狂热的节奏激烈的跳动，浑身的血液象是要沸腾了似的。超高速的吉他riffs，低沉有力的bass，密不透风的狂暴鼓击，令人有种窒息的感觉。更为令人赞叹的是这一切是在许多急停的精巧编排中严谨的结合在一起的，乐队在这张专辑中表现出的凶残暴戾的气质和高超的演奏水准足以令任何一支Death Metal乐队汗颜。无疑这张专辑是整个极端金属音乐界最优秀的唱片之一。音乐比较富有旋律性，吉他演奏有点激流金属的味道，主唱的表现也不是十分激烈，鼓的表现十分抢眼，速度力量俱佳，Cryptopsy用前两张专辑捍卫了他们在Death Metal中的地位，随后乐队发行了多张经典专辑，2025年乐队在Season of Mist厂牌发行了他们的最新专辑“An Insatiable Violence”，新专辑发行之后便收到非常多的好评，随即乐队展开了大规模的巡回演出，其中巡回演出包括中国，这也是乐队第一次访问中国为中国歌迷进行表演，前不久杂志通过Season of Mist厂牌的协助与Cryptopsy乐队的歌手Matt取得了联系进行了一次专访！

Today's interview features the renowned Brutal/Technical Death Metal band Cryptopsy from Canada. Formed in 1988, Cryptopsy stands as one of Canada's most accomplished bands. They serve as a banner for Canadian Death Metal, garnering a global following, and alongside fellow Canadian band Kataklysm, pioneered an entirely new Death Metal subgenre. Originally named Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the band soon changed its name to Necrosis and released their debut album Realms of Pathogenia under that moniker in 1991. After releasing the demo Necrosis in 1992, they renamed themselves Gomorra, but quickly reverted to the now widely recognized name Cryptopsy. Their first demo, Ungentle Exhumation, released in 1993, garnered significant attention from fans and critics alike. Their 1994 debut album Blasphemy Made Flesh, released on Germany's Invasion Records, garnered widespread acclaim—its thick, dark atmosphere, masterful instrumentation, intricate arrangements, and near-frenzied vocals delivered what many considered the most brutal work in existence. For many Chinese fans, Cryptopsy truly entered the spotlight with their 1996 classic album None So Vile. A relentless storm of notes engulfs the listener, not only assaulting the auditory nerves but also making hearts pound violently to the frenzied rhythms, as if the blood in one's veins were about to boil. Supersonic guitar riffs, deep, powerful bass, and relentless, suffocating drumming create an oppressive atmosphere. Even more astonishing is how all these elements are seamlessly woven together through meticulously crafted abrupt stops. The brutal ferocity and extraordinary technical prowess displayed on this album would put any death metal band to shame. Undoubtedly, this album ranks among the most outstanding works in extreme metal. Within its highly melodic framework, the guitar work carries the essence of thrash metal, the vocals deliver intense tension without extreme growls, and the drumming stands out for its perfect blend of speed and power. Cryptopsy cemented their status in death metal with their first two albums, followed by a string of classic releases. In 2025, the band released their latest album, Never Satisfied Violence, through Season of Mist. The new album garnered widespread acclaim, prompting the band to embark on an extensive tour that included a stop in China—their first-ever performance for Chinese fans. Recently, with assistance from Season of Mist, our publication successfully secured an exclusive interview with Cryptopsy's vocalist, Matt!

Hello Matt, it's great to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has accepted an interview from a Chinese magazine. First of all, I want to say hello to all Chinese fans. Your band was founded in 1988. Who proposed to form this band? At the beginning of your band's establishment, it was named Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Soon after, it was renamed Necrosis. During the Necrosis period, you also released some works. Later, your band was renamed Gomorra again. In 1992, it was officially renamed Cryptopsy until now. What is the reason for your frequent name changes?

M: 感谢邀请我前来——能终于与中国乐迷及媒体相聚，实属荣幸。Cryptopsy的早期历史早于我加入时期，但那些更名历程恰恰映射出年轻乐队在蒙特利尔崛起的极端金属场景中探索自我的历程。当音乐风格愈发阴暗且技术化时，“Cryptopsy”这个名字最终精准捕捉了乐队真正的精髓。自1992年起，这个名字便成为我们的标识——我们始终自豪地高举这面旗帜。

Thank you for having me — it’s truly an honor to finally connect with fans and media in China. Cryptopsy’s early history predates my time, but those name changes reflect a young band searching for its identity in Montréal’s rising extreme metal scene. As the sound became darker and more technical, the name “Cryptopsy” was the one that finally captured the essence of what the band truly was. Since 1992, it has defined us — and we’ve proudly carried that banner ever since.

V: 如今乐队中仅鼓手Flo是创始成员。你和其他成员是在2005至2011年间加入的。第一代成员为何离开乐队？你和其他新成员又是如何加入的？

Your band now only has drummer Flo as the initial member. You and the other members joined the band between 2005 and 2011. Why did the first-generation members leave the band, and how did you and the other new members join the band?

M: Flo不仅是乐队最后一位创始成员——他更是维系Cryptopsy生命力的脉搏。历经三十余载，成员们走向人生新篇章实属自然。而让乐队始终坚韧不拔的，正是那些既尊重乐队传承又渴望将其推向新高度的音乐人加入。我于2007年加入，正是被Cryptopsy毫不妥协的音乐理念所吸引。现任阵容在2005至2011年间逐步成型，从最初我们就秉持共同使命：致敬过去，但永不固步自封。

Flo is not only the final original member — he’s the pulse that keeps Cryptopsy alive. After more than three decades, it’s natural that some members move on to different chapters in life. What kept the band strong was the arrival of musicians who respected the legacy and wanted to push it even further. I joined in 2007 because I was drawn to Cryptopsy’s uncompromising vision. The current lineup formed between 2005 and 2011, and from the start we shared the same mission: honor the past but never stand still.

V: 你们目前的阵容已稳定多年，彼此配合默契。你们都清楚自己想要创作怎样的作品。能否介绍你们的创作过程？相信你们的创作方式定能为许多年轻音乐人带来启发！

Your current lineup has been maintained for a long time, and you are very familiar with each other. You both know what kind of work you want to create. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative process will definitely bring inspiration to many young musicians!

Our creative chemistry is one of our biggest strengths. It usually begins with guitar riffs and structures from Chris, which become the foundation. Flo then crafts the drum architecture that makes everything burst to life. Once the music is locked in, I develop the lyrics and vocal phrasing around the emotion and narrative of the songs. Everyone contributes; everyone pushes each other — there’s zero ego involved. If I were to give young musicians one piece of advice: stay curious, experiment constantly, and don’t be afraid to explore extreme ideas.

V: 你们乐队的录音作品每个时期都独具特色，录音效果也极为出色。每件乐器都清晰可辨，可见你们对录音工艺极为讲究。请问专辑是在哪家录音室完成的？由哪位制作人操刀？新专辑的录制过程是否顺利？

Your band's recordings have their own characteristics in each period, and the recording effects are also excellent. No instrument can be heard very clearly. It seems that you are very particular about recording. Which studio did you record your album in? Which producer made the album for you? Did the recording process of the new album go smoothly?

M: 每张Cryptopsy专辑都映射着其诞生的时代——不同的录音棚，不同的技术，始终在演变。最新专辑“An Insatiable Violence”由乐队成员Christian Donaldson亲自操刀制作，他已成为我们声音标识的核心缔造者。录制过程充满挑战——Cryptopsy对精度的追求需要全神贯注——但正是这种压力造就了乐迷期待的混乱而锋利如刀的残暴感。最终我们精准实现了追求的冲击力。

Each Cryptopsy album reflects the era it was created in — different studios, different techniques, always evolving. Our latest record, *An Insatiable Violence*, was produced by our very own Christian Donaldson, who has become an essential architect of our sonic identity. The recording process was demanding — Cryptopsy’s precision requires full focus — but that pressure is what delivers the chaotic, razor-sharp brutality fans expect. In the end, we achieved exactly the impact we were chasing.

V: 你们乐队的Logo设计非常精美。是谁为你们设计的这个Logo？你们每张专辑的艺术设计都极为精致，尤其是今年新专辑的封面设计非常漂亮。是谁为你们设计的这张封面？你们经典专辑"None So Vile"的封面设计有何寓意？

The logo design of your band is very exquisite. Who designed this logo for you? The art design of each of your albums is very exquisite, especially the art design of this year's new album is very beautiful. Who designed this art for you? What is the meaning of the art design of your classic album "None So Vile"?

M: 我们始终高度重视Cryptopsy的视觉呈现。多年来众多杰出艺术家为我们的传承贡献心血。在"An Insatiable Violence"专辑中，我们有幸与已故的Martin Lacroix合作——这位前Cryptopsy主唱的艺术创作完美诠释了专辑的氛围与核心理念。而"None So Vile"的标志性封面则呈现出终极反差：优雅古典意象包裹着最狂暴的音乐。这种美与暴力的双重性，正是Cryptopsy的核心精髓。

We’ve always taken the visual side of Cryptopsy very seriously. Many amazing artists have contributed to our legacy over the years. For *An Insatiable Violence*, we were fortunate to work with the late Martin Lacroix — a former Cryptopsy vocalist — who's artwork perfectly captured the album’s mood and message. And *None So Vile*’s iconic artwork remains the ultimate contrast: elegant classical imagery wrapped around the most savage music imaginable. That duality — beauty and brutality — is at the heart of Cryptopsy.

V: 你们曾与众多优秀厂牌合作发行专辑，例如知名的Century Media Records，Wrong Again Records，Nuclear Blast Records，Season of Mist等厂牌合作，你们是如何与这些厂牌联系并展开合作的？对这些厂牌作是否满意？此前未曾与加拿大厂牌合作，为何不选择加拿大品牌？

You have collaborated with many excellent labels to release albums, such as the well-known ones Century Media Records，Wrong Again Records，Nuclear Blast Records，Season of Mist How did you establish contact and collaborate with these brands when waiting for them to cooperate? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands? You haven't worked with a Canadian brand before, why don't you choose to work with a Canadian brand?

M: 与国际主流厂牌的合作让我们得以触达全球因我们进行全球Death Metal巡演，与能支持这种覆盖范围的公司合作才合乎逻辑。我们感激所有合作过的伙伴——每家厂牌都助我们迈向新台阶。加拿大固然值得骄傲，但极端音乐厂牌的基础设施始终未能与我们的目标相契合。于是世界成了我们的主战场。

Working with major international labels has allowed us to reach death metal fans around the world. Because we tour globally, it made sense to partner with companies that could support that reach. We’re grateful for everyone we’ve worked with — each label helped us take the next step. Canada has plenty to be proud of, but the infrastructure for extreme music labels hasn’t always aligned with our goals. The world became our home base.

V: 恐怖、亵渎、血腥、死亡、残害、疯狂、谋杀——这些构成了你们乐队的音乐主题。为何选择这样的主题？想通过它表达什么？歌词部分也由你亲自创作？灵感源自何处？

Horror, Blasphemy, Gore, Death, Mutilation, Insanity, Murder are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section, which were all created by yourself? What does your inspiration come from?

M: Cryptopsy的歌词最初扎根于恐怖、血腥与冲击——这正是90年代初Death Metal的语言。这些年来，我的创作转向了黑暗背后的心理：操控、社会腐朽、破坏性冲动。现实世界的邪恶远比虚构更令人毛骨悚然。如今我创作歌词时，灵感无处不在——历史、媒体、个人恐惧、深夜的怪异念头。音乐本身充满张力，主题也必须同样激烈。

Cryptopsy started with lyrics rooted in horror, gore, and shock — that was the death metal language of the early ’90s. Over the years, my own writing has shifted toward the psychology behind darkness: manipulation, societal decay, destructive impulses. Real-world evil is far more terrifying than fiction. Today, I write the lyrics, and inspiration comes from everywhere — history, media, personal fears, weird late-night thoughts. The music is intense, so the themes must be equally intense.

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their new album "An Insatiable Violence" this year. Your works are full of vitality and aggression. Every improvised repetition, every beat of the drum, every melody, and every roar that comes with it all excite fans very much. There are both classic Cryptopsy passages that we are familiar with, as well as some experimental passages. The double guitar solos in several songs also left a deep impression on me. From any aspect.

M: 感谢大家——我们对“"An Insatiable Violence"”感到无比自豪。我们既要呈现乐迷期待的混乱侵略性与技术性疯狂，又要融入新鲜元素和更广阔的动态层次。Cryptopsy停止进化的那一刻，就是乐队消亡的时刻——而我们远未停步。看到老乐迷与新听众共同拥抱这张专辑，便是我们能获得的最高回报。

Thank you — we’re very proud of *An Insatiable Violence*. We wanted to deliver the chaotic aggression and technical insanity fans expect while introducing fresh elements and broader dynamics. The moment Cryptopsy stops evolving is the moment the band dies — and we’re not even close to done. Seeing longtime fans embrace the record alongside new listeners is the best reward we could ask for.

V: 你们乐队曾参与众多重要音乐节，为各国乐迷献上精彩演出。哪些音乐节给你们留下深刻印象？能否与大家分享当时的场景？

You have bands that have participated in many important music festivals and delivered wonderful performances to fans from many countries. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you share the scenes from that time with everyone?

M: 我们有幸在全球各地的传奇音乐节演出——瓦肯露天音乐节、夏之微风音乐节、残暴袭击音乐节等等。当我们走上舞台，面对准备与我们一同爆发的庞大观众群时，那种能量令人上瘾。这些时刻让我们深刻明白自己为何坚持音乐之路。

We’ve been fortunate to play legendary festivals around the world — Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, Brutal Assault, and many more. Walking out onstage in front of massive crowds who are ready to explode with us — that energy is addictive. Those moments remind us exactly why we do what we do.

V: 你们是支非常出色的乐队，在中国拥有众多乐迷。自1993年你们发行Demo"Ungent Exhortation"以来，我便一直追随你们的音乐。今后我仍会持续支持并关注你们的乐队。期待有朝一日能在中国与你们相见，共饮一杯。最后你们有什么想对中国的乐迷说的吗？

You are a very excellent band with a large number of fans in China. I have been following your band since the demo work "Ungent Exhortation" released by you in 1993. I will continue to support and follow your band. I hope to meet you in China and have a drink together. Do you have anything you want to say to your Chinese fans in the end?

M: 致中国乐迷——感谢你们这些年来始终如一的热爱与支持。我们感同身受并由衷感激。我们迫切渴望亲临现场为你们献演，让你们近距离感受Cryptopsy演出的震撼力——没错，演出结束后我非常乐意与你们共饮！
