For this issue of Volcano Magazine, we’ve invited a special guest: a YouTube with over 130,000 followers who also composes music and leads his own one-man black metal band Boris Behara of the Italian melodic black metal band Tryglav. In 2018, tired of the lack of seriousness toward music in the various bands he had been part of, Boris founded his own melodic black metal band, Tryglav, and took on all musical composition duties himself. In 2019, Tryglav released their debut studio album, “Night of Whispering Souls”. The album garnered widespread acclaim from fans for its melodic appeal and vivid, evocative lyrics, blending modern guitar passages and unique song structures while retaining the raw, gritty essence of black metal. In 2023, the band released their second studio album, “The Ritual”. This outstanding melodic black metal concept album attracted even more fans to the band and established Tryglav as one of the most talked-about melodic black metal bands of the 21st century. In 2025, the band finally took the stage at Hellfest. Through continuous accumulation of live performance experience, the band has gained increasing recognition from black metal fans. Just recently, the magazine had the privilege of conducting an exclusive interview with Tryglav’s founder, Boris Behara. Boris shared his insights on black metal composition, the band’s experiences performing on major stages, and his advice on promoting the band as a YouTube.

Hello Boris, thank you very much for agreeing to this interview. This should be your first interview with a Chinese metal magazine. First, could you tell us how Tryglav was formed? What does the name Tryglav refer to?

B: 你好，感谢邀请！是的，这是我首次接受中国金属杂志的采访，很高兴能参与其中。Tryglav成立于2018年，当时我刚离开上一支乐队。我尝试过加入不同的乐队，但没人把音乐当回事。对他们来说，音乐更像是一种游戏，一种娱乐，而对我来说，这却是一件极其重要的事。我渴望全身心投入音乐，而要做到这一点并完全掌控一切，唯一的途径就是组建一支一人乐队。Tryglav就是这样诞生的。Tryglav（原名Triglav）是斯拉夫神话中的一位三头神，其每一颗头颅分别代表着天空、大地和地狱。

Hello and thanks for having me here! Yes, this is my first interview with a Chinese metal magazine and I’m glad to be part of it. Tryglav was formed in 2018 after I left my last band. I tried to play with different bands, but nobody was taking it seriously. It was more of a game, something fun for them, while for me it was something much more important. I wanted to dedicate myself to music seriously, and the only way to do that and have full control over it was to start a one-man band. That’s how Tryglav started. Tryglav (originally Triglav) is a three-headed god from Slavic mythology, and each head represents the sky, the earth, and the underworld.

V: 对于Tryglav，在音乐上你希望和之前你做的东西有哪些不同，或者有哪些你想通过Tryglav的音乐延续下去的特质？

For Tryglav, musically speaking, what differences do you hope to achieve compared to your previous work, or what qualities do you wish to carry forward through Tryglav's music?

B: 老实说，我认为我不会做太多改变。在我看来，从第一张专辑到第二张专辑，歌曲创作上已经有了很大的飞跃，而下一张专辑中也会有一些新元素。未来我可能会加入一些新元素，但不会改变音乐的核心——它始终会是Melodic Black Metal。当然，世事难料，一切皆有可能。

I don’t think I will change too many things, honestly. From the first to the second album there was a big jump in songwriting, in my opinion, and there will be some new things in the next one. I’ll probably add some elements in the future, but I won’t change the core of the music, which will always be melodic black metal. Then of course, never say never.

V: 在2023年你发行了Tryglav的第二张专辑"The Ritual"，在主题上，这张专辑像是首专的延续。可以介绍一下Tryglav的创作流程吗？在创作期间，你会怎样向客座乐手展示你的创作？

In 2023, you released Tryglav's second album, The Ritual. Thematically, this album feels like a continuation of the debut. Could you describe Tryglav's creative process? During the writing phase, how do you present your compositions to guest musicians?

B: 通常情况下，唯一和我一起制作专辑的人只有主唱。其他的一切，包括人声旋律和歌词，都出自我的手笔。我通常只是先录好自己演唱的旋律，然后告诉他们要完全按照我的方式来唱，但也会给他们留出自由发挥的空间，如果他们觉得某些地方可以加点什么来唱得更好，也可以自行调整。当我开始创作歌曲时，最难的部分通常是第一个riff。一旦我找到了它，一切就变得容易多了，然后我就可以和鼓手一起，一个riff一个riff地构建歌曲。这时就像是在解谜，通常很快就能完成。

The only person who works on the album with me is usually the singer. Everything else, including vocal melodies and lyrics, is mine. I simply record my vocals with the melodies and tell them to sing exactly as I did, leaving them the freedom to add something if they think it might sound better. When I start composing songs, the hardest part is usually the first riff. Once I find that, it becomes pretty easy, and I start building the song riff by riff together with the drums. It’s like a puzzle at that point, and usually a fast process.

V: 在新专辑"The Ritual"的所有歌曲中，是否有哪一首对你来说有特殊的意义？能否分享一下歌曲背后的创作故事？

Is there a particular song on your new album, “The Ritual”, that holds special meaning for you? Could you share the story behind its creation?

B: 大概就是"The Ritual"这首歌本身吧。主旋律的节奏原本很慢，是我为我的80年代风格项目写的，但当我准备即兴演奏的时候，不小心把BPM设置成了180。我开始加快速度，发现听起来还不错。当我加入颤音吉他段落之后，我就想……好吧，这可以放到Tryglav的作品里。

Probably “The Ritual” itself. The main rhythmic riff was much slower, and I originally wrote it for my ’80s project, but accidentally the BPM was set to 180 when I was about to jam on it. I started playing it faster and it sounded good. When I added the tremolo guitar, I was like… ok, this goes into Tryglav.

V: 你的油管账号BorisT.更新频率很高。而现在，你不仅需要创作油管账号内容，还要分出时间去演出以及Tryglav的音乐创作，你是如何平衡这些工作的？

Your YouTube channel updates frequently. Now, not only do you need to create content for your YouTube channel, but you also have to carve out time for performances and Tryglav's music production. How do you balance all these tasks?

B: 有时候很难，因为我最大的敌人就是我自己。YouTube是我的主要收入来源，我应该把大部分精力放在它上面，但当我开始创作音乐时，我就会完全沉浸其中，根本不在乎是否能赚钱——我只想完成正在写的那首歌。最近就发生了这样的事：我开始即兴演奏我80年代乐队项目Vision的一段鼓点。我当时正在弹奏一些激烈的riff，结果忘记静音的合成器突然响了起来。那声音太棒了，让我深受启发，于是我开始将其作为一个新项目创作。所以，是的，我另一个项目的EP已经快完成了，结果我为此投入了资金，还因为有一阵子没上传视频而损失了YouTube的收入。到现场演出，我总是尽量录制演出过程，这样我就可以在网上发布一些内容，但我也会确保在出发巡演之前至少准备好一个视频，这样上传的时间间隔就不会太长。

Sometimes it’s hard because I’m my own worst enemy. YouTube is my main income, and I should focus mostly on it, but when I start composing music, I just zone out and don’t care if I’m not making money—I need to finish that song. It happened recently: I started jamming on a drum track from my ’80s project Vision. I was playing some thrashy riffs when a synth I forgot to mute started playing. I was so impressed by how good it sounded that I got inspired to write something for a new project. So yeah, I have an EP for another project almost finished, and I ended up investing money into it and losing income from YouTube since I didn’t upload for a while. When it comes to playing live, I always try to record the trip so I have something to post online, but I also make sure to have at least one video ready before I leave, so not too much time passes between uploads.

V: 很多的中国的乐迷是通过你的油管账号认识你的。在你的一期视频中，你以一次未能实现的巡演为例子解释了为什么你拒绝了一场本来令你非常期待的巡演。我想这对从未巡演过但又想去巡演的乐队们有很大的参考价值。从当下的环境看，你会给在起步阶段的乐队和金属自媒体创作者们哪些建议？

Many Chinese fans first discovered you through your YouTube channel. In one of your videos, you used the example of a canceled tour to explain why you turned down a tour you had been really looking forward to. I think this offers valuable insights for bands that have never toured but are eager to do so. Given the current climate, what advice would you give to up-and-coming bands and metal content creators?

B: 关键是，如果你有一份稳定的工作并且不介意巡演赔钱，因为巡演更像是一种度假或者纯粹的娱乐，那就去做吧。但说到现场演出，我一直把乐队当作它本来的样子——当作一份工作来看待。我们收到的那次巡演邀请对我们乐队目前的水平来说很不错，我很感激他们能邀请我们。但根据我们的纸面计算，光是这次巡演我们就得亏大约200欧元。而且巡演过程中可能会出现很多意外，最后可能会陷入严重的经济困境。我从一开始就说过：这支乐队只在能盈利的情况下才演出或巡演。我不在乎名气，也不在乎炫耀自己参加过某个音乐节或巡演。我热爱我的音乐并珍视它——这就是我的工作。如果我的名气足够大，能拿到应有的报酬，那当然好。否则，我就不会巡演或演出，我会等到乐队变得更出名的时候再出发。到目前为止，我们的每一场演出对我们乐队和主办方来说都是盈利的。

The thing is, if you have a regular job and you’re okay with losing money on touring because it’s more like a vacation or just fun, then go for it. When it comes to live shows, I’ve always treated the band as what it is—a job. The offer we got for that tour was good for the band’s level, and I’m really grateful they even asked us. But we would have already been losing around 200 euros based on our calculations. And when you tour, too many things can go wrong, and you can end up seriously broke. Something I’ve said from the beginning is: this band plays or tours only when it’s profitable. I don’t care about fame, and I don’t care about bragging that I played a certain festival or tour. I love my music and I value it—and this is my job. If I’m big enough to get paid properly, then great. Otherwise, I simply won’t tour or play, and I’ll wait until the band is bigger. Every show so far has been profitable both for the band and for the organizers.

V: 2025年你们终于登上了Hellfest的舞台，在Hellfest的演出有哪些让你印象深刻的回忆？你有见到哪些你喜欢的乐队或者乐手吗？

In 2025, you finally took the stage at Hellfest. What are some memorable moments from your Hellfest performances? Did you get to see any bands or musicians you admire?

Hellfest太棒了。从组织安排到其他一切都无可挑剔。那几天简直是人间炼狱——说真的，我这辈子都没经历过那么热的一天——但我享受其中的每一秒。作为一个内向的人，这本身就够难熬的了，而且因为所有安排都非常紧凑，我们还得忙得团团转，几乎没有空闲时间。但我们玩得非常开心，作为乐手和乐迷，我们都享受着这场音乐节，因为我见到了所有和我一起长大的朋友。吃饭的时候，一边是Abbath，另一边是Mickey Dee，这种感觉真是太奇妙了。这绝对是我人生中最美好的回忆之一。

Hellfest was amazing. From the organization to everything else. It was hell on earth those days—I don’t remember a hotter day in my life, seriously—but I enjoyed every second of it. Being an introvert was already hard, and we also had to run left and right because everything is scheduled very precisely, so you don’t have much free time. But we had tons of fun and enjoyed the festival both as musicians and as fans of this music, because I was able to see all the guys I grew up with. It feels so weird when you’re eating and on one side you have Abbath and on the other Mickey Dee. It was definitely one of the highlights of my life.

V: 2026年二月你和Tryglav的现场成员们参加了奥地利的Burn With Hate音乐节。这是2026年的你的第一场演出吗？听说演出的场地是一家废弃的医院改造的，在那里演出的体验如何？

In February 2026, you and the live members of Tryglav performed at the Burn With Hate festival in Austria. Was this your first show of 2026? I heard the venue was a converted abandoned hospital—how was the experience performing there?

B: 是的，这是我们作为音乐节压轴乐队的首秀，也是2026年的首场演出。每次作为压轴乐队演出，我都会很紧张。我脑子里总是想着各种各样的事情，不知道我们是否足够有实力成为音乐节的压轴乐队。最终，一切都很顺利。组织工作做得非常棒，音乐节的门票也全部售罄了。演出结束后，我花了很多时间和乐迷们互动，这是我最喜欢的环节。

This was our first show as a festival headliner and also the first show of 2026, yes. For every show where we headline, I’m always worried. My head is full of thoughts, and I wonder if we’re big enough to headline a festival. In the end, everything went well. The organization was great, and the festival sold out. I spent a lot of time with fans after the show, which is my favorite part.

V: Tryglav在2026年还有哪些演出计划？今年除了参加音乐节之外会有巡演的安排吗？

What other performance plans does Tryglav have for 2026? Besides participating in music festivals this year, will there be any tour arrangements?

B: 目前我们没有巡演计划。之前那场巡演我已经取消了，而且我觉得今年应该不会再有其他邀约了——不过凡事皆有可能。对于经纪公司来说，在“除非能覆盖成本否则不巡演”的乐队和“愿意亏本”的乐队之间，选择其实很简单。关于演出，我们大概计划了四场，但一切仍在筹备中。我觉得随着新专辑的发行，会有更多机会，毕竟"The Ritual"已经发行三年了。

No tour for us so far. We had that one that I canceled, and I don’t think we’ll get any other offers this year—but never say never. Between a band that won’t tour unless it covers costs and one that accepts losing money, the choice is pretty simple for agencies. Regarding shows, we might have four planned, but everything is still in progress. I think there will be more opportunities with the new album, since The Ritual is already three years old.

V: 你最近在听哪些黑金属乐队和黑金属专辑？除了金属，你还有在听哪些音乐风格？

Which black metal bands and albums have you been listening to lately? Besides metal, what other music genres do you listen to?

B: 我通常一次只听一两张专辑，这样才能好好欣赏，而不是随便听听。尤其是在春夏两季，我听得比较多，比如Death、Thrash和一切重型音乐，如果天气和心情都合适，我就会更喜欢听Black Metal。最近我正在听Hellripper的新专辑，这张专辑仍然带有Black Metal的元素；还有Interceptor，他们的风格更偏向ld-school speed/thrash，有点像Venom。

I usually try to listen to one or two albums at a time so I can give them a proper listen and not just a casual one. Especially in spring and summer, I listen more to death, thrash, and heavy stuff, and I prefer black metal when the weather matches the mood. At the moment, I’m listening to the new Hellripper, which still has black metal influences, and Interceptor, which is more old-school speed/thrash in the style of Venom.

V: 你提到你有很多喜欢的电子游戏，那么你有特别喜欢的游戏配乐吗？如果有机会你想为哪种类型的游戏创作配乐？

You mentioned you have many favorite video games. Do you have any particular favorite game soundtracks? If given the chance, what type of game would you like to compose music for?

B: 说到游戏原声带，魂系游戏，尤其是巅峰之作"艾尔登法环"，其配乐堪称一流，气势恢宏。"最终幻想"系列也拥有一些史上最棒的游戏原声，还有"异度之刃"、"上古卷轴5：天际"，甚至1994年的"咚奇刚"。水域关卡的音乐简直是神来之笔。通常来说，日式角色扮演游戏（JRPG）的配乐都非常出色。"艾尔登法环"正是我们新专辑的灵感来源。我原本的想法是收录一些游戏中精彩的管弦乐部分，但我没能把我的想法清楚地表达给我的朋友，来自Daidalos乐队的Tobias，他是一位非常优秀的键盘手。所以很遗憾，我不得不放弃那个想法，但专辑中的三首歌在音乐和歌词上都明显受到了这款游戏的启发。至于为电子游戏创作音乐……我觉得自己的能力还不够。

When it comes to soundtracks, the Souls series, peaking with Elden Ring, probably has one of the best and most epic ones. The Final Fantasy series also has some of the best soundtracks ever, as well as Xenoblade, Skyrim, and even Donkey Kong from 1994. The water level music is pure magic. Usually, JRPGs always have amazing soundtracks. Elden Ring is the one that inspired the new album. The idea was actually to include some of those amazing orchestrations, but I wasn’t able to explain my ideas properly to my friend Tobias from Daidalos, who is an amazing keyboard player. So unfortunately, I had to drop that idea, but three songs on the album are clearly inspired musically and lyrically by the game. When it comes to composing music for a video game… I don’t think I’m good enough for that.

V: 在你的一期视频里你提到Watain乐队的Erik Danielsson是你最希望合作的人之一，我也很喜欢他。你有去过Watain的演出吗？如果真的有机会和Erik合作一首歌曲，你希望这首歌最像哪一首Watain的歌曲？

In one of your videos, you mentioned that Erik Danielsson from Watain is one of the artists you'd most like to collaborate with. I'm a big fan of his too. Have you ever been to a Watain show? If you ever got the chance to work on a song with Erik, which Watain track would you most want it to resemble?

B: 是的，我已经看过三次Watain的演出了，但我一直都很期待再次去看他们的演出。我常说：如果你去看Watain的演出——不管你是不是他们的粉丝——你肯定会喜欢，至少在视觉上会很享受。他们太棒了。可惜的是，他们在发行新专辑后就要解散了，但我一定会再找机会去看他们的现场演出。如果我有机会和Erik合作，我想创作一首类似"Waters of Ain"的曲子。这首歌是长达14分钟的纯粹享受，结尾的solo简直太美妙了。

Yes, I’ve seen Watain three times at this point, but I’m always looking forward to seeing them again. I always say: if you see a Watain show—fan or not—you’ll probably enjoy it, at least visually. These guys are incredible. It’s a shame they’re going to split after the new album, but I’ll definitely try to see them live once again. If I had the chance to work with Erik, I think I’d want something similar to “Waters of Ain.” That song is 14 minutes of pure enjoyment, and the ending solo is just too good.

V: 你的歌词总是有很强的故事性，也有很强的画面感。在创作Tryglav的歌词时，你的灵感主要来自哪里？

Your lyrics always tell compelling stories and paint vivid pictures. Where did you draw your inspiration from when writing the lyrics for “Tryglav”?

第一张专辑的灵感来自恐怖电影。"Creature of the Night"的灵感就来自"Fright Night"，如果你仔细阅读歌词就会发现；还有"The Thing"里的"Under My Skin"，等等。第二张专辑，我想要一个原创的故事，所以它是一张概念专辑。因为英语不是我的母语，所以我需要一些帮助，但我认为最终效果非常好。通常，我的灵感来源很广泛——可以是游戏、天气、书籍、自然、电影等等。我尽量避免去写经典的Black Metal主题，因为它们已经被用滥了，而且我对此并不感兴趣。

For the first album, I was inspired by horror movies. “Creature of the Night” was inspired by Fright Night, if you read the lyrics, “Under My Skin” by The Thing, and so on. For the second album, I wanted an original story, so it’s a concept album. I needed help with it because English isn’t my main language, but I think it turned out really well. Usually, I get inspired by many things—it can be a game, the weather, books, nature, movies etc. I try to avoid classic black metal themes because they’re overused and I’m not really interested in them.

V: 现在越来越多的人选择组建单人Black Metal乐队，你认为当下的年轻金属音乐家们应该如何推广自己的音乐？怎样让自己的音乐更精准地找到属于自己的受众？

Nowadays, more and more people are choosing to form one-man black metal bands. How do you think young metal musicians today should promote their music? How can they ensure their music reaches the right audience?

B: 一个老派乐手可能会说：多出去演出——这也正是乐队会破产、失去动力并最终停摆的原因。在互联网出现之前，这种方法确实有效，因为杂志和现场演出是发掘新乐队的唯一途径。而且说不定会有唱片厂牌的代表在现场观演，从而有机会签下乐队。如今情况已大不相同，而且乐队数量比以前多了几千倍，要脱颖而出，最好的方法就是利用互联网。你无需花费任何费用，如果你懂得如何正确使用互联网，就可以零成本推广你的乐队。专注于创作最好的音乐，买一台二手相机和几个好用的镜头，然后着手宣传你的乐队。其他一切都会随着时间自然水到渠成。

An old-school guy would probably say: go out and play as much as possible—which is also why bands go broke, lose motivation, and stop playing. It worked before the internet because magazines and live shows were the only ways to discover new bands. And maybe someone from a label was there to potentially sign them. Nowadays it doesn’t work like that anymore, and with thousands more bands than before, your best way to get noticed is the internet. You don’t have to pay anything, and if you know how to use it properly, you can promote your band without spending a cent. Focus on creating the best music you can, get yourself a good used camera with a couple of lenses, and work on your promotion. Everything else will come with time.

B: 再次感谢你们的邀请。中国是我非常想去演出的地方之一，因为那将是一次完全崭新的体验。我从未去过欧洲以外的地方，那将会是一次非常疯狂的经历。

Thanks again for having me here. China is one of those places I would absolutely love to play because it would be something completely new. I’ve never been outside Europe, and that would be a crazy experience.
