Everyone is running around for a living, farther and farther away from their dreams, but there are some who have realized their dreams, today's interview is with an artist from the United Kingdom, Rory Graphicsfix Petts, Rory Graphicsfix Petts runs his own design company called Graphicsfix. Rory Graphicsfix Petts runs his own design company called “Graphicsfix” and designs for a lot of British extreme metal bands, and gradually Rory Graphicsfix Petts has become one of the hottest designers in the UK right now, and recently the magazine contacted Rory Graphicsfix Petts for an interview, which is the first time the magazine has ever done an interview with a designer! This is also the first time the magazine has interviewed a designer!

“Rory Graphicsfix Petts. Owner of Graphicsfix” I have had an interest in drawing from a young age, much to the detriment of more academic subjects. I began drawing vehicles from basic shapes with guns and saws that resemble competitors on the English robot fighting show “Robot Wars” but was likely inspired by toy cars I was given. I have just found “King of the Bots” which looks fascinating. My lettering was criticised by my teachers who suggested I have dyslexia. I just watched that word automatically correct its spelling. Maybe they were right. Little did I know my terrible handwriting would become a massive staple of my art career drawing illegible band logos worldwide. Clients now ask “please make the band name 30% harder to read.”

I focused heavily on art in my early teens and went to Art College and university learning a massive range of creative processes from photography and digital photo manipulation to printmaking and eventually specializing in both graphic design and illustration. At this time I attended my first nu metal festival at Download festival 2008 seeing bands like Motorhead, Static X and Pendulum. One of my final projects was a flash animation about 9/11 being orchestrated by the US government as a prelude to war in the Middle East. In the version I released on “newgrounds.com” I used a song from the band HED PE who I would later go on to design merchandise for.

In the last year of my studies alcoholism and hallucinogenic drug use became a big factor in my life which would continue through years of spending time in squatted buildings, waking up in public parks and on the roofs of supermarkets without recollection of how I got there. I spent many years working in a call centre selling solar panels where I would draw whilst working every day. My mental health eventually deteriorated to the point I became delusional, paranoid and unstable so I became hermit for several years in order to recover.

This change in lifestyle left a large void in my life. I found myself sat in a room pasted wall to wall with recurring images of violent horrors and demons I had drawn over the years. I took down all of the artwork on my walls and started trying to portray a new story of hope. I fell back in love with drawing again and around that time found my first few small commissions whilst working at a local pub. One of these was my first ever hot sauce label commission. At the time I did not realize this hot sauce label commission for a small welsh company called “Chilli of the Valley” would change my life.

Many years later I moved to a new city working as a barman, restaurant runner, pot wash and
cleaner and the covid-19 pandemic started. Very quickly there was no work for me to pay my bills and after struggling for a while I considered trying to do some art between job hunting to make some money to contribute to bills. I messaged the owner of “Chilli of the Valley” asking if he had any need for hot sauce labels. He instantly replied asking where I had been for 3 years and that he would love for me to do all of his 40+ products. Within a week I realized I could do this for a full time job. This is the first year of just hot sauce label design work I did. As I was given more creative freedom I moved towards more extreme subjects. I was now truly and artist.

How did you get in touch with the band and make artworks for them? Besides English bands,
which bands have you worked with?

My first big commission came from the band HED PE of whom I emailed with my hot sauce portfolio artwork. It took them a year to reply and take an invoice and another year before they finally green lit the idea they had paid me to develop and finish. Still with that said they have not printed the shirt but used the image as a profile photo for a long time. You quickly learn with bands that are on a record label or management will likely not reply unless you have something that will set you apart. Self managed bands are slow to reply but will get the job done eventually. Small independent bands are always my best customers because they often communicate quickly and consistently and are not so constrained when making choices. I would say other than the HED PE shirt my most mentioned design is Party Cannons 10th anniversary of partied in half shirt. When I started doing shirt designs for UK Techfest I would give promotional “Graphicsfix” hot sauces made by “Chilli of the Valley“ to every band playing to advertise my artwork. Many just thought I was a hot sauce salesman and when they would ask about hot sauces I would direct them to my artwork. My mother sent me a voice message saying “I did some research and the Party Cannon logo is very controversial you should ask to do a spiky version” and I sent this to the band and they thought that was funny and said go ahead. Even touching this world famous logo gave me intruder syndrome more than any other project I have worked on and I asked the band not to use it as a permanent replacement. They have used it for other merchandise since though! The Party Cannon hot sauce was also very successful merchandise. Someone ate two bottles on stage in London at the sauces release and ended up in hospital. That was probably due to the Carolina Reaper chillies rather than the edible glitter in the sauce.

I had an idea to use my industry contacts to try and find a Norweigan black metal band to do a collaborative beer and within 24 hours we had Dimmu Borgir interested in an anniversary beer collaboration. This led to a further collaborative beer with my artwork on it called “Norwegian Black metal in conspiracy with Cervisiam – TRVE NORWEGIAN JOL STOUT” with members of Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Mayhem, Emperor, Enslaved, Aura Noir and Sarke. The beer was brown cheese and jam flavoured and I am yet to try it

I know that the extreme metal culture in Britain is very strong. What do you think of the
atmosphere in your country?

I have only attended two festivals outside of the UK in Czechia so I cannot really draw a fair comparison between my country and others. With that said I have considered leaving the UK to experience other cultures outside what we see in the media. The scene varies from place to place but it exists almost everywhere in the UK. The atmosphere within the culture is like family with largely left wing principles. My generation at least was heavily judged for their music tastes being alternative and being attacked for having colored hair and piercings was commonplace both in schools and on the street. Often it was those lower on the social hierarchy at a younger age who got into metal music openly. As we progressed to adulthood we as a community understand a common bond of empathy, fighting against bullies and not judging people because they are different. (myself and some friends attending a gig) At UK metal festivals we are surrounded by thousands of people who share experiences with us and turn up to have fun and prove that human nature is more good than evil. Still with this said in any family there is dysfunction. Within social groups there will always be narcissists who take advantage of others, cause tension and promote gossip rather than focusing on their own goals.

You help the band make artworks. What's the profit from this job? Do you have any other jobs? Or a professional artist?

I choose to prioritize working to live rather than living to work so I live in a reasonably inexpensive shared house with friends and earn just enough to enjoy my life once bills are paid. I also have kept my pricing low so people from other countries and small bands can afford my work. As a perk of my job I get a lot of tickets to gigs by doing the posters and festivals designing the merchandise so this keeps most of my free time busy attending metal shows. I have only worked as a self employed artist for 5 years now. I still do work for hot sauce companies all over the world including “Chilli of the Valley” who gave me this life. I still do beer labels for various companies and other random commissions but most it hot sauce, meta logos and art

With the development of science and technology, many bands now start to use AI technology to complete works of art in order to save costs. What's your opinion?

I think the majority of metal fans draw the parallel between art and music. If a “band” were to generate music using prompts rather than learning to play they would be ignored. Gen AI has also started coming for music with websites like UDIO allowing users to type a band name and make the singer of a band say anything they type. The watershed moment with AI and art was the release of “Pestilence – Levels of perception” in which the band received overwhelming backlash for their AI album cover and have since become the punch line of this discussion. As anyone under threat of losing their lifes passion to a new technology I am of course against any use of gen ai in my work. I believe the best description I have heard is that “Gen AI is the attempt to remove the commodity of creativity from the working class via theft”. We all know these renders take a lot of energy and once they are accepted and outperform human creativity the companies will then pass legislation to limit its use and raise the price. Many bands are also supposedly conned into buying gen ai artwork from online artists. Many use it knowingly due to budget restraints. I think some are genuinely conned but many with low budgets have plausible deniability when called out for its use. I am currently trying to spread knowledge of gen ai detector programs like “HIVE AI DETECTOR” and suggest alternatives like old artwork and images that have fallen out of copyright. With that said small to mid size bands main money in the UK comes from band merchandise sold at the show. If bands choose to cut costs on artwork they would easily cut out other creative roles like sound technicians, photographers, lighting techs, videographers, video editors, music video actors once ai alternatives are commonplace and maybe at some point managers, record labels and promoters.

Do you do anything else in the metal industry besides designing art for the bands?

I also run some non profit metal gigs in Kent and here in Norwich. I started doing this for my birthday where I used to live because the scene was dead. When I moved to Norwich I put on my favourite bands Petrol Hoers which is one man shouting in his pants over a backing track with some metal bands and people enjoyed something different. I also help to run a battle of the bands for the UK’s largest extreme metal festival “Bloodstock Open air” in which the winner of the competition goes on to play the 20k sold out festival. I recently put on the extreme comedy metal band “Raised by owls” who won Metal 2 the masses many years ago and are now playing the largest stage (on a Sunday morning posters for events I have organized)

By unusual merchandise I mean some of the less obvious merchandise I have been a part of creating. When I got into making hot sauce labels I was asked to do a band hot sauce label that was an already existing collaboration between Chilli of the Valley and the punk band “This System Kills”. Then came two other punk band collaborations. When I started being involved in bands and festivals I started trying to set up these collaborations myself to great success. As I mentioned above I started creating sauces to give out to the bands at each festival I work with that have my details. This familiarity with bands means when I see them next I can remind them of the hot sauce and they at least know I am involved in the scene.

The infamous singer Varg is known for burning churches, murder and his homophobic views. In the spirit of anti bullying I made a joke version of the design with him fellating a trumpet with an LGBT pride flag. Bumzone is a reference to the boy band Boyzone.

What do you think is the biggest obstacle between the band and the artist?

For large bands management and the sheer number of people that must be involved in decision making and how important their canon branding is. For medium bands its often finances due to the cost of touring barely making them enough spend money when often friends or fans will contribute for exposure or as a favour. With small bands its about trust. Many bands pay artists on fiverr and end up with AI. Many bands seek cheap art and end up scammed. Many artists do not know how to work with band effectively and end up losing money due to lack of communication. I have spend 5 years ironing out these processes so that I have maintained a 5/5 star rating on facebook where I get most of my business and people often tag me in jobs because they know I will get it done for a fair price.

You are the first artist I interviewed. I am very glad to introduce you as an excellent artist to China. I also hope that more people can appreciate your works of art through this interview and that you can design more excellent works of art. “NIU BI!” and thank you for this opportunity to reflect on my life as an artist, my achievements and within doing that set myself new goals. Whist writing this interview I have once again emailed HED PE with the files to print that shirt design. I am very interested in working with bands all over the world. Part of my job is learning about the story of a band so that I can create a visual representation of what they want to say that transcends language. Not that we can understand what extreme metal bands are shouting about anyway but I think maybe they think they are farm animals or something.
