Today the interview is about the band from Netherlands, named Noctambulist.Noctambulist is formed in 2016.In 2020,they released the first album Elegieën. After 4 years,the band will release the second album De Droom.This is also a great album. The coordination of 3 guitars make the sounds fuller.In their songs, we can feel relaxing and smooth.It was all so natural,and you will get stuck in it. The second album become more “post”, and you can also feel the flowing of the melody, like a poem. So ,if you like Alcest or post black metal, don’t miss them ,they will give you a surprise. Now，We reached out to the band for an interview just before the release of their new album.

Hello, friends from the Netherlands, thank you for your acceptance of this interview with Volcano magazine. First,say hello to your Chinese friends. Can you tell me a little about your band ,and how you came together?

J: 中国朋友们好！Noctambulist 在学生宿舍的室友之间形成。我们都在Tilburg的不同乐队里决定一起做音乐。我们最初计划演奏Forward Black Metal,，但当我们开始制作真正的音乐时，我们发现我们在Black Metal之外有很多化学反应和重叠的影响，我们实际上都可以把它编进来其中。

Hello Chinese friends! Noctambulist formed between housemates in a student housing complex. We had all been in different bands around the city of Tilburg and decided to make music together. We initially planned to play pretty forward black metal, but as soon as we started making actual music we found that we had a lot of chemistry and overlapping influences outside of black metal that we could actually weave in.

V: 一个乐队很少使用三吉他阵容，这确实丰富了你的音乐的吉他声音。你什么时候发现你需要使用一个三吉他阵容，这对你的乐队创作有什么影响？

It is rare for a band to use a three-guitar lineup, and it really enriches the guitar sound of your music. When did you find that you needed to use a three-guitar lineup, and how did it affect the creation of your band?

J: 这并不是说我们需要一个三吉他手的阵容，但我真的很想让Tristan加入乐队，哈哈。我们有很多化学反应，已经写了一段时间Post-Rock的素材了。三名演奏者也有助于声音的分层。很多"Elegieën"里的歌是在Tristan到来之前写的，所以那张唱片没有像新唱片那样展示出那么多的层次。

It wasn’t so much that we thought we needed a three-guitar line up, but I really wanted Tristan to be in the band haha. We have a lot of chemistry and had been writing post-rock material for a while. Having three players also helps in layering out sound. A lot of Elegieën was written before Tristan arrived so that record doesn’t showcase that layering as much as the new record will.

V: 你们也是一支有9年历史的乐队。你能告诉我你的创作过程吗？你的介绍告诉我你的新专辑是一起完成的，那么在你的创作过程中，它与你的第一张专辑有什么不同？

You are also a nine-year-old band. Could you tell me your creative process. Your introduction tells me that your new album is done together, so in your creative process, how is it different from your first album?

J: 九年才两张唱片？该死，我们得提高我们的水平了。第一张唱片主要是由个人完成的，而这张唱片是由集体努力完成的。有些歌曲已经很成熟了，但当被扔进排练室时，每个人都要在歌曲上做自己的改编。"Aderlater"就是一个很好的例子。当我们开始做的时候，它和现在完全不一样。我认为如果我们没有全力以赴，那首歌就不会这么好听。

Nine years and two records? Damn, we need to step up our game. The first record was mostly written by individuals whereas this record was made as a group effort. Some of the songs were pretty far formed but when thrown into the rehearsal studio everyone got to do their own thing on it. ‘Aderlater’ is a very good example of this. It was something completely different when we started on it. I don’t think that song would’ve been anywhere near as good if we didn’t all pour our best into it.

V: 我听了你即将发行的专辑中的两首单曲，我觉得你的第二张专辑和第一张专辑的风格有些不同。你能谈谈它们的区别吗

I listened to your two singles of your coming album and I think there are some differences between the style of your second album and the first one. Can you talk about the differences

J: 与第一张唱片不同，我们有意识地选择了一条不同的路线。我们在录制"Elegieën"的时候就已经在计划"De room"了。我们想探索我们的Post-Punk/Rock，New Wave和Shoegaze的影响，也写更多的好听的歌。我们可以马上发行"Elegieën 2"，但是我们真的没有兴趣重复。

There was a conscious choice to go a different route as opposed to the first record. We were already planning out De Droom during the recording of Elegieën. We wanted to explore our post-punk/rock, new wave and shoegaze influences more and also write more palatable material. We could’ve done Elegieën 2 in a heartbeat, but we really had no interest in repeating ourselves.

V: 你的专辑封面很简单这与其他黑金属专辑不同。你能简单解释一下你的两张全长专辑封面的意义吗？

Your album covers are very simple, which is different from other black metal albums. Can you briefly explain the meaning of the covers of your two full-length albums?

J: 我不认为它们简单。事实上如果你了解录制这张唱片时的情绪状况，这张新唱片的艺术作品就会很有分量。简而言之一座废弃别墅的卧室是万物腐朽的写照。"Elegieën"的艺术作品应该唤起一种幽闭恐惧症的不安，也反映了该记录中呈现的主题。

I wouldn’t necessarily call them simple. In fact the artwork for this new record has a lot of weight if you understand the emotional conditions that the record was recorded in. The bedroom of a derelict villa is commentary on the decay of all things, to put it simply. The artwork for Elegieën is supposed to invoke a claustrophobic unease, also reflecting on the themes present on that record.

V: 你的第二张专辑不再是一张概念专辑了。你能给我们简要介绍一下你即将发行的第二张专辑吗？

Your second album is no longer a concept album. Can you give us a brief description of what your upcoming second album talking about?

J: "De room"并不是一张概念专辑，但很多歌曲都有类似的主题。这张唱片反映了一段不成功的关系，加上无力购买合适的住房。唱片中贯穿着社会评论，但以希望和梦想的形式呈现。

De Droom isn’t a concept album, but a lot of songs have similar themes. The record is a reflection on an unsuccessful relationship paired with the inability to purchase proper housing. There’s social commentary present throughout the record, but presented as hopes and dreams.
