Today's interview was with Disma, an old American Death Metal band formed by guitarist Bill Venner in 2005. After their formation, the band did not immediately release any works, but only released their first demo work "The Vault of Membros" in 2009. This work quickly attracted the attention of many fans after its release. The biggest feature of this demo work is that they chose to play the Finnish style of death metal, which is heavy and suffocating. Of course, the band was also influenced by some American bands, such as Funebrarum If you like Funebrarum, Inception, and some Finnish Old School Death Metal bands, then Disma is worth paying attention to. In 2011, the band released their first official album "Towards the Megalith" on the Profound Lore Records label in Canada. After the album was released, the band quickly gained more recognition, with a very pathological and bass guitar, thunderous bass, and vocals. The music in this album is a perfect combination of slow and fast improvisational repetitions, as well as some fast temporal changes, which really make the songs interesting. The production is great, and the guitars in this album are fantastic. Every instrument you can hear clearly, everything blends well. After the successful release of this album, the band quickly became an invitation to major music festivals. Recently, the magazine contacted the band's founder Bill for an exclusive interview!

Hello Bill nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview, I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, first of all say hello to all the Chinese fans, disma was formed in 2005 and it's a band with a long history, who was the one who suggested this band? Do you remember what it was like back then?

B: 问候火山！也问候中国地下金属圈子的金属兄弟姐妹们！2005年，是我比尔想出了Disma这个名字和乐队的想法。当时金属音乐已经过时了，我想我需要用一些Old School Death Metal来踢它的屁股。所以这段旅程开始了，我们今天还在这里！

Greetings Volcano! Also greetings to my metal brothers and sisters of the Chinese underground metal scene! It was I, Bill who came up with the name Disma and the idea for the band back in 2005. It was a time when metal was stale and I thought I needed to kick its ass with some old school heavy death metal. And so this journey began and we are still here today!

V: 你现在是乐队里唯一的第一代成员，其他成员都被替换了，为什么第一代成员退出了乐队？新成员是怎么加入乐队的？你对新成员的工作满意吗？

You're the only first generation member in your band now, all the other members have been replaced, why did the first generation members quit the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's work?

No,I'm not the only surviving member. Craig and Randi are still in the band and have been since the first demo, The Vault of Membros. The other guitarist left because he was forced out for commie reasons. The original drummer Shawn left because he moved and couldn’t make it to band practice. Our current drummer Chris was on old friend of the local scene.

Your band's recordings are amazing, what studio did you all record the album at? Which producer produced your

We recorded the album at Sound Spa Studios with Steve DeAcutis. We brought our sound and he captured it. We were very happy with the recording.

Each member of your band is an experienced musician in creating extreme metal, can you describe your creative process? I'm sure your experience will inspire more young musicians!

I basically write the majority of the riffs at home and present them as videos or at practice. Craig and Randi get together and work out ideas as well. We will then present the parts to our drummer and work out these ideas until we are happy with a song structure. We try to make sure each part crushes before finalizing each song. We always write the songs as instrumentals, and work the lyrics in at the end. We want each song to sound unique and have it’s own feel

Your band's logo is beautiful, who designed it for you and your album artwork is beautiful, who designed the artwork for you?

Darkness, Morbidity, Death, Hauntings, Evil are some of your musical themes, why did you choose them and what do you want to express through them? You also wrote the lyrics, who wrote the lyrics and what inspired them?

We like the supernatural and creepy elements in life. We like dark things and the feeling it brings. For our demo Craig, Ex Member Daryl and I wrote lyrics for each of the demo songs. Ex member Daryl and I wrote lyrics for the album. I write 90% of the lyrics now since we have been a 4 piece band. Craig will take what I have written and turn them into his creations and incorporate them into the songs.

You have released albums with labels such as Necroharmonic Productions, Profound Lore Records, etc., all of which are excellent, how did you get in touch with these labels to work with them, and were you satisfied with the work they did?

We have known Roy and Necroharmonic records since the beginning of the death metal scene. I drew the Necroharmonic logo. We are all local friends of the scene and have worked with Necroharmonic on many occasions. We found Profound Lore as they were looking to sign some new bands. Everything was great with these 2 labels on all of our releases

First of all, congratulations on the release of your new EP album in 2022. on your debut album, you have created a unique music with amazing, irresistible atmospheres that are equally mesmerizing. the style of Death/Doom music played by Disma is heavy and twisted. The best thing about this album is that you play not American Death Metal style, but Finnish Death Metal, with rhythms, unusual melodic design - all of which is immediately reminiscent of the local scene at the beginning of the Death Metal boom. Your work reminds me of Incantation, with its relatively slow tempo, the singer's hoarse low growl and distortion-heavy atmosphere. Do you have any thoughts on your work? Has anything changed on the new album compared to the old one?

Thank you. We put a lot of hard work into completing the Earthendium Ep of 22022. Our influences are rooted in the 80’s early 90’s of thrash and death metal. Yes we strive for a more Scandinavian sound as many of those old bands from there inspire our writing. We also are inspired by other European bands as well as many American bands. We like heavy,nasty,doom metal. We share many similarities with Incantation as two of us are old ex members. We also share many of the same influences as we all grew up around the same time. We have a definite NJ/NY style that all of the bands share in some way. The new material is just a natural progression. Same style, no shocking surprises to disappoint old fans. We have many heavy riffs to crush you with when the new album arises

V: 作为一支老牌乐队，你们参加过很多音乐节，哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻印象，能描述一下音乐节的氛围吗？如果有一天中国的音乐节主办方邀请你们来中国演出，你们是否愿意为中国乐迷奉献一场精彩的演出？

As a veteran band you've played a lot of festivals, what festivals have impressed you and can you describe the atmosphere and what festivals are you planning to play in 2025? If one day the organizers of a Chinese festival invite you to play in China, would you be willing to give your Chinese fans a great show?

B: 我们最喜欢的音乐节是Maryland Death Fest。巴黎的Wolf Throne Festival也非常棒。我们前一天晚上在巴黎一个叫Le Club的地下小地方演出。有两个中国歌迷来看我们！两场演出都是如此！是的，如果有机会，我们很荣幸能到中国演出！

Our favorite festival was the Maryland Death Fest. Also the Wolf Throne Festival in Paris was amazing. We played the night before in a small underground place called Le Club in Paris. 2 Chinese fans came to see us! For both shows! Yes, we would be honored to play in China If the opportunity arose!

V: 2025年你们乐队有哪些新的计划，比如创作、录制新歌或发行新专辑？能向大家透露一些信息吗？

What are some of the new things you have coming up for your band in 2025, such as writing, recording some new songs or releasing a new album? Can you reveal some information to the crowd?

B: 我们准备录制9首新歌。我们将在今年春季进入录音室。我们很高兴能让大家听到我们的作品。这些新歌将通过Doomentia Recs发行CD、LP，暂无名称。

So we have about 9 new songs ready to record. We will head into the recording studio in the Spring of this year. We are excited to for everyone to hear what we’ve done. This will be released through Doomentia Recs. On CD, LP. No title as of yet.
