Today we're interviewing John Pino Lisi, a one-man melodic death metal band from Italy. Formed in 2015 by John Pino Lisi himself, the band bears his name. Shortly after its inception, they released their debut full-length album “Dreamlike Trip.” The album seamlessly blends ferocious, brutal vocals with ethereal female harmonies, resulting in a high-quality work. Featuring tight riffs and masterful instrumental performances, the album garnered widespread attention upon its release. In 2022, the band released their second full-length album, “Follow My Journey,” another meticulously crafted work. Following its release, the band caught the attention of the renowned Italian label Punishment 18 Records, which signed them and released their latest album this year, “Rock My Opera.” To coincide with the new album's release, the magazine reached out to John Pino Lisi through Punishment 18 Records for an exclusive interview!

Hello, brother. It's a pleasure to meet you, and thank you so much for joining us for this interview. I believe this is your first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First off, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. When was the John Pino Lisi band formed? Why did you choose to use your own name?

J: 亲爱的，首先，我认为你们堪称全球最棒的摇滚/金属乐迷，因此能进行这次访谈让我倍感欣喜，希望借此让你们了解我的音乐。我以本名进行创作，因为这是个人项目，我可以自由创作所有想写的音乐，与我在其他乐队演奏的风格截然不同。一切始于2015年，当时我搬离家独立生活后发行了首张专辑"Dreamlike Trip"。

Hi dear, First of all, I think you're known to be the best audience in the world for rock/metal music , so I'm really happy to have this interview, so you can get to know my music. I used my name because this is a solo project, and I compose all the music I want, different from what I play with my other bands. It all started in 2015 with the release of my first album, "Dreamlike Trip," after I moved to live on my own.

V: 你是乐队唯一的成员，创作过程就变得极其便利。你可以完全按照自己的构想来创作音乐。能否描述一下你的创作过程？

Since you're the only member of the band, it makes the creative process incredibly convenient. You can compose music entirely according to your own vision. Could you describe your creative process?

J: 我自幼学习多种乐器并刻苦钻研，因此能为任何乐器创作音乐。如今我的主奏乐器是吉他，并常与众多金属乐队合作演出。创立这个项目正是为了实现我的音乐构想。如前所述，我常为其他乐队演奏创作，因此需要独立项目来释放那些不适合现有乐队的创意。

I learned to play many instruments at a young age and studied a lot, so I can write music for any instrument. Now my main instrument is the guitar, and I play with many metal bands. I wanted to create this project to write music according to my vision. As I said before, I play and compose a lot of music for other bands, so I needed my own project to give vent to other ideas I had in mind that weren't right for the bands I play with.

V: 你的作品在录音质量方面堪称卓越。这张专辑是在哪家录音室完成的？制作人是谁？

Your work is outstanding in terms of recording quality. Which studio did you record your album at, and who was the producer behind it?

J: 在这方面我也做了大量独立工作；除了人声和鼓组外，大部分录音都是在我家工作室完成的。专辑的混音和母带处理，我选择了曾与其他乐队合作过的StreetRecStudio录音室。

I worked a lot on my own in this regard too; most of the recording, except for the vocals and drums, was done in my home studio. For the mixing and mastering of the album, I went to one of the studios I've also been to with other bands, called StreetRecStudio.

V: 至今你已发行了两张专辑。2015年推出首张专辑后，你直到2022年才发布第二张。是什么原因让你间隔这么多年才推出第二张专辑？

You've released two albums so far. After putting out your first album in 2015, you waited until 2022 to release your second one. What led you to take so many years before releasing your second album?

J: 首张专辑的诞生源于我当时正在学习家庭录音技术，尽管那时我并未加入任何乐队，仍将此前所有构思都倾注于此。凭借这张专辑，我在金属乐界崭露头角，受邀加入Blackrage乐队担任吉他手，并随他们进行了大量巡演。后来我又加入了其他乐队（Sylpheed、Vide、Husqwarnah、Cultø）。正因如此，首专与二专之间隔了很长时间。能有时间创作第二张专辑，是因为新冠疫情期间没有演出任务。

The first album came about because I was learning home recording, and I put all the ideas I had in mind up until then into the album, even though I wasn't playing with any bands at the time. Thanks to this album, I made my name in the metal scene and was asked to play guitar in the Blackrage band , with whom I played a lot of concerts. I later started playing for other bands (Sylpheed, Vide, Husqwarnah, Cultø). For this reason, a lot of time passed between the first album and the second. I had time to write the second album because it was the Coronavirus period and I didn't have any concerts to do.

V: 你的Logo设计真是惊艳绝伦。我注意到它融入了你名字的首字母。是谁为你设计的这个标Logo？你的专辑封面设计也同样精美。这些作品是谁创作的？创作灵感来自哪里？

Your logo design is absolutely stunning. I can see it incorporates the first letter of your name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also beautifully designed. Who created these pieces for you? What inspired them?

J: 该Logo由才华横溢的意大利插画师Scalpel设计。我要求他在标志中融入我的姓名首字母，并加入类似吉他的符号。他的设计非常出色。封面设计出自我的伴侣之手，他在平面设计工作室工作。封面描绘了歌曲"Rock My Opera"中最关键的场景——主角站在桥上踌躇是否跳下去的瞬间。

The logo was designed by Scalpel, a very talented Italian illustrator. I asked him to include the initials of my name in a logo, along with a symbol resembling a guitar. He was very good. The cover was designed by my partner, who works at a graphic design studio, and depicts the most important scene from the song "Rock My Opera," the moment when the protagonist thinks about jumping off the bridge.

V: 你的音乐主题是什么？为何选择这个特定主题，又希望通过它表达什么？你还创作了歌词，这些歌词的灵感来源是什么？

What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this particular theme, and what do you aim to express through it? You also wrote the lyric what inspired them?

J: 为这张专辑，我试图将格拉齐埃拉·文特罗内的小说"摇滚我人生"转化为摇滚音乐剧。我通读全书，在每章结尾记录关键词汇，以此为基础创作音乐，专辑由此诞生。我试图用音乐重现主角经历的所有瞬间与情感。歌词由亚历山德拉·维卡里奥创作，她同时担任专辑主唱。甚至决定整张专辑只收录一首歌也是深思熟虑的——因为这张专辑本就该连续聆听，或许在读完小说之后...

For this album, I wanted to transform Graziella Ventrone's novel Rock My Life into a rock musical. I read the entire book and wrote down key words at the end of each chapter to then compose the right music, and that's how the album was born. I tried to recreate all the moments and emotions of the protagonist in music. The lyrics were written by Alessandra Vicario, who also handled the vocals on the album. Even the decision to record just one song for the entire album was deliberate because it's an album that should be listened to continuously, perhaps after reading the book...

V: 你的两张专辑都是独立发行的。为什么不选择唱片公司来发行呢？

Both of your albums were self-released. Why didn't you choose a label to release your albums?

J: 我认为近年来唱片公司对艺术家的支持已不如往昔，当年拥有唱片合约至关重要。过去若没有唱片公司，根本不知如何发行唱片。如今只要肯花时间投入精力，任何人都能在线提供发行服务。或许达不到专业水准，但完全可以自主发布作品。

I think that in recent years, labels no longer have as much to offer artists as they did many years ago, when having one was very important. Before, if you didn't have a label, you didn't know how to release a record. Nowadays, anyone who puts in the effort and has free time can offer this service online. Maybe not at a high level, but they can certainly release what they want on their own.

V: 你的作品确实出类拔萃——旋律动人，编曲精妙，显然倾注了全部心血。你的声线充满力量与锋芒，鼓点编排更是绝妙。鼓声是通过软件制作的吗？作品的氛围感也极为出色。你如何评价自己的创作？

Your work is truly outstanding—the melodies are beautiful, the arrangements intricate. It's clear you pour your heart into creating these songs. Your vocals are fierce and sharp, and the drum parts are absolutely brilliant. Are you using drum software? The atmospheric quality of your pieces is also exceptional. What are your thoughts on your own work?

J: 非常感谢……这是一张极具情感冲击力的专辑，正如我之前所说，创作初衷是通过音乐重现主角的情感历程，希望我做到了。聆听这些乐曲时，你应当感受到自己就是故事中的主角。鼓点部分由我创作并由鼓手Panta演奏编曲——这位挚友与我共同参与其他乐队演出。我认为自己的作品独具特色 :-)

Thank you so much… It's a very emotional album, and as I said before, the intent was to recreate the protagonist's emotions through music, and I hope I succeeded. When you listen to this music, you should feel like you're the protagonist of the story I want to tell. The drums were written by me and played and arranged by drummer Panta, a great friend of mine with whom I play in other bands. I think my work is unique :-)

V: 你参加过哪些音乐节？哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻印象？能否描述一下那些活动的氛围？随着2025年接近尾声，是否有即将举办的音乐节邀请了你？能否透露些细节？

Which music festivals have you attended? Which ones left a lasting impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those events? As 2025 draws to a close, are there any upcoming festivals you've been invited to? Can you share any details with us?

J: 在我的个人项目中，我仅在第二张专辑"Follow My Journey"的发布派对上演出过一次。我强烈推荐大家深入了解这张专辑——它完全由我独自在疫情期间创作完成。我邀请了25位不同艺术家在米兰各录音室录制所有歌曲，现场演出时我们与众多音乐人同台，那场演出非常精彩。我在YouTube频道详细记录了整个过程。令我印象最深刻的音乐节总是小型演出，因为演出时能与观众营造出绝佳氛围，演出结束后还能与他们把酒言欢。反观大型演唱会，虽然观众众多，却难以建立这种情感联结，感觉只是完成工作后便各自离场。今年目前仅安排了十二月在米兰的一场演出，而与我合作的乐队已预订了2026年起多场演出。至于我的“摇滚歌剧”项目，希望能找到剧团共同制作音乐剧。

With my solo project, I've only played once at the release party for my second album, "Follow My Journey," which I recommend you learn more about because I composed the album entirely by myself during the Covid period. I had 25 different artists record all the songs in various studios in Milan, and during the live show, we played with a lot of people, and it was really great. I've written all about it on my YouTube channel. The best festivals that have left a lasting impression on me have always been the smaller ones because during the show, you create a great atmosphere with the audience, and at the end of the concert, you find yourself drinking and talking with them. On the other hand, at big concerts, you play in front of a lot of people, but you don't create this atmosphere, and it feels like you're just doing your job, and then at the end, you go home. This year, for now, I only have one concert in December in Milan, and then I already have a few dates booked starting in 2026 with the bands I play guitar with. For my Rock My Opera project, I hope to find a theater company to put on a musical.

V: 2025年你有哪些新计划？比如创作并录制全新专辑？能否透露些细节？

What are your new plans for 2025? For example, creating and recording a brand new album? Can you reveal some details?

J: 希望我成功勾起了中国乐迷的好奇心...这样你们就能邀请我演出啦 :-) 目前第四张专辑的大部分曲目已完成创作，这次我计划组建John Pino Lisi乐队进行巡演。同时，我还为合作乐队创作了大量吉他作品。

I hope I've piqued the curiosity of your Chinese fans... so you can invite me to play :-) So far, I've written most of the fourth album, and this time I think I'll form a band under the John Pino Lisi banner and play concerts. In the meantime, I've written a lot of music for the bands I play guitar with.
