今天采访到的是来自法国的老牌Death Metal乐队Mortuary，组建于1988年的Mortuary乐队，最初由Jon和其他成员组建，当初成员在几支乐队演奏并且参加了同一层音乐节，随后Jon与其他的成员见面并且询问是否愿意组建一支更具有攻击性的乐队，随即Mortuary成立，最初乐队取名为Total Dead，但是在1989年乐队更换了现在的名字Mortuary一直到现在，1996年乐队在Triangle Productions厂牌发行了第一张正式专辑“Hazards of Creation”，1998年乐队发行的第二张正式专辑“Eradicate”引起了更多歌迷的关注，随后发行的专辑让更多人认识了这支乐队，也得到了更多关注和好评，同时也被邀请参加了更多的音乐节，今年乐队的发行了最新专辑，新专辑发行之际杂志与乐队取得联系，就行了一次专访！

Today's interview was with the veteran Death Metal band Mortuary from France, formed in 1988 by Jon and other members. Initially, the band played in several bands and participated in the same music festival. Jon then met with other members and asked if they were willing to form a more aggressive band. Mortuary was then formed, initially named Total Dead, but the band changed its name in 1989 and has been doing so ever since. In 1996, the band released their first official album "Hazards of Creation" on Triangle Productions label, and their second official album "Eradicate" was released in 1998. '' This has attracted more attention from fans, and the subsequent album released has brought more people to know this band, as well as received more attention and praise. At the same time, they have been invited to participate in more music festivals. This year, the band released their latest album, and at the time of the release of the new album, the magazine contacted the band for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans. Mortuary was founded in 1989 and is a long-standing band with a long history. Who proposed to form this band? Do you remember the scene at that time?

M: 嗨，我的朋友和所有的中国球迷！我们很自豪能接受中国杂志的采访。这确实是第一次。Mortuary是由Jno会议成立的（贝斯）和我。在一个音乐节上，我们在两个不同的乐队演奏。演出结束后，Jno来了问我是否有兴趣制造一种更具攻击性的金属，Mortuary诞生了。当时，有几个法国乐队。这是法国金属界的开端。Loudblast, Massacra, Agressor…是最著名的。

Hi my friends and all of the chinese fans ! We are really proud to be interviewed by a Chinese zine. The really first one ever indeed. Mortuary was formed by the meeting of Jno (bass) and me. We played in 2 different band on a festival. Jno came after the show and asked me if I was interested to form a more aggressive kind of metal. Mortuary was born. At this time, there were a few french bands. It was the very beginning of the french metal scene. Loudblast, Massacra, Agressor,...were the best known.

As an old band, you haven't changed too many members. The first generation members Patrick Germonville and Jean No ë l Verbecq still hold positions in the band, while the other members have already changed. Drummer Gorgor from Dath Whorejoined the band this year, and I am also good friends with Death Whore. I have also interviewed them. Why did the first generation members leave the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

The line up changes are the band's life. You start working with a guy, you find some good riffs and then, when you think you find a real team cohesion, he decide to leave the band, because of his job, his family, and the desire to try something else, I don't know. It still remains a very good experience, meeting and passion sharing. Right now, we are in a very good vibe. Tof (guitar on Eradicate era)join back us last year and we were so happy cos he is a so talented musician and a lovely guy. And at our last show, Gorgor, Deathwhore's drummer, helping us on this date, tell us that he stay with us cos he love our music. A real good guy too, and very professional.

V: 你们乐队的每个成员都是有丰富创作经验的音乐家。你是如何创作歌曲的？你能介绍一下创作过程吗？我相信你的创作过程会给许多年轻的音乐家带来灵感！

Each member of your band is a musician with rich creative experience. How do you create songs? Can you introduce the creative process? I believe your creative process will bring inspiration to many young musicians!

M: 很多时候，主要的即兴重复段是亚历克斯的想法。我们每个人，在家里用这个即兴重复段工作，并尝试带来一些想法（贝斯、独奏、第二节奏……），然后，我们聚在一起，在周末在Alex的工作室工作，分享我们的想法。所以，我们有了歌曲的基础，我们在家里创作即兴重复段、旋律和文本。每个人都在工作，其他人和Tof首次混合了所有这些文件。这是创作过程的第一步。

Very often, the main riff is a idea from Alex. Every of us, work at home with this riff and try to bring some ideas (bass vocals, solos, second rythm,...) and then, we met together and we work during a week end in th Alex's studio, sharing our ideas. So, we got the song basis, and we work at home on riffs, melodies, text. Every one work on his part, sharing the files with the other guys and Tof made a first mix of all these files. This the very first step of the creation's process.

Every album of your band has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer made the album for you? Is the recording process of your new album released in 2023 progressing smoothly?

Through all these years and the seven albums recorded so far, we went in many different studio. Everytime , over all it's a human experience . The work in studio is so exciting and stressing sometimes. I love it. The two last have been recorded in the mighty Hertz studio (Behemoth, Decapitated, Vader,...) in Poland With Slawek and Wojtek, two incredible brothers, an incredible experience and a real step forwards for the band in the way to master our own sound, how to apprehend our way to record. The guys give us many advices along the time we spent there. They teach us how to give the best of every musicians. They did the recording and the mastering of « Agony in Red » that we decide to re record with the help of Dirk Verbeuren (our former drummer, now in Megadeth) and the results is so awesome ; The most agressive album so far for us !!

V: 你乐队的Logo设计很漂亮，能很好地记住你的名字。谁为你设计了这个Logo？你的专辑艺术品也设计得很漂亮。谁为你设计这些专辑艺术品？

Your band's logo design is very beautiful and can remember your name very well. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artworks are also beautifully designed. Who designed these album artworks for you?

M: 很抱歉，但不记得是谁找到了最后一个Logo，哈哈！！！关于封面设计，我们与Lukas Jakasz合作完成了“the autophagous reign”，最后一个“Sublime the Decline”是由我们的一位朋友设计的；Stan Hauyy，一位真正有才华的绘图师。

Sorry but impossible to remember who found the last logo, ha ha !!! About the cover design, we worked with Lukas Jakasz for « the autophagous reign » and the last one « Sublime the Decline » has been designed by a friend of us ; Stan Hauyy, a real talented graphist.

V: 暴力、苦难、社会是你们乐队的音乐主题。你为什么选择这样的音乐主题？你想通过这些音乐主题表达什么？你还创建了歌词部分。谁创作了这些歌词，是什么启发了他？

Violence, Misery, Society are the music themes of your band. Why did you choose such music themes? What do you want to express through such music themes? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

M: 自从乐队成立以来，我为每首歌都写了歌词。我是一个充满激情的读者，我从我的书和周围的一切中寻找灵感。我喜欢写关于现代社会中的人。我们在这个世界上还有自己的位置吗？

I've written all the lyrics for every song since the band started. I'm a passionate reader and I find inspiration in my books and in everything around me.I like to write about the place of the human in the modern society. Have we got still our place in this world ?

V: 你们与很多厂牌合作发行了专辑，你是如何与这些厂牌联系进行合作的？你对这些厂牌作满意吗？

You have collaborated with many labels to release albums. How did you get in touch with these labels to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of these brands?

M: 凭借我们的上一张唱片，我们与法国唱片公司Adipocere签订了协议。他是乐队的老朋友，知道我们的音乐。他给了我们完全的工作自由。

With our last record, we signed a deal with a french label Adipocere. He's a very old friend of the band and know our music. He gave us total freedom for working.

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their latest album "Sublime the Decline" in 2023. This album is based on the old school death metal framework and incorporates some elements of rhythm metal, making your work sound very retro and aggressive. Your work has been deeply influenced by bands such as Malevolent Creation and Monstrosity in the United States, and the drum beats hit the audience in full attack mode, switching to slower parts while fast. The slowed down part often has a hypnotic feeling, dragging the audience more into the music. Sometimes, the rhythm completely disappears, and after a brief break or some jarring chords, the fierce attack begins again. Sometimes after these breaks, the guitar performance is excellent, with some impressive and quite complex solo parts. Do you have any opinions on your own works? What are the changes between the new album and the old album?

First of all, thanks for this analysis of our music. Just perfect!!In other terms, that you felt and describe in precise terms, this is the real Mortuary style and sound. It have to be agressive but melodic, with rythmics parts you could easily remember and recognize. As I said in a other questions, we have our own sound now.This one perfectly matches how we would like Mortuary to sound.

V: 作为一个老乐队，你参加过许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象？你能介绍一下当时的现场气氛吗？2025年还有哪些音乐节会邀请你参加？

As an old band, you have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? What other music festivals will invite you to participate in 2025?

M: 我们在许多节日演出，包括Hellfest这样的大型节日，观众非常多。我们还参加了Muscadeath, Lions, Gatinaicticut, bestial fest等音乐节，这是一次非常好和令人兴奋的经历。每个乐队都必须尽最大努力，我们喜欢演奏这种节日。你遇到了许多粉丝，并分享了你的激情。气氛是总是很友好，与粉丝们有着深刻的交流。如果你真心诚意地演奏音乐，观众肯定会有反应

We played at many festivals include big one like Hellfest with a very big audience. We also played in medium festival like Muscadeath, Lions, Gatinaicticut, bestial fest, etc... Each time, it's a very good and exciting experience. Every band have to do their best and we love to play this kind of festival. You met many fans and share your passion.The atmosphere is always friendly and it occur a deep communion with the fans. If you play your music honestly with your guts, the crowd will react for sure

V: 2025年，你的乐队有新的工作吗？例如创作、录制新歌或发布新专辑时，你能与每个人分享一些信息吗？

Do you have any new jobs for your band in 2025? For example, when creating, recording new songs, or releasing a new album, can you share some information with everyone?

We are working on new songs for the next album to come : the 8th. Up to now, already 9 songs have been written, the lyrics are done. As Gorgor recently join the band. We start the rehearsal with him. We just re released « Agony in Red » with Dirk Verbeuren on drums. He was in the 2000's, our drummer on this album and on his demand, we re record this album. The sound is so awesome. A masterpiece of brutality. I hope the fans will enjoy the songs.
