比利时Death Metal/Grindcore/Crust Punk乐队Barren专访

比利时有太多的优秀乐队，之前我也采访过几支来自比利时的乐队，今天我再次为大家介绍一支来自比利时乐队Barren，虽然乐队在2017年才成立，但是乐队的每一位成员都是演奏极端金属乐经验丰富的乐手，乐队的成员参与过很多支乐队，比如Emeth, Aborted, Agathocles，Human Vivisection, Slithering Decay, Fractured Insanity, Storm upon the Masses，这些乐队都是比利时非常优秀的乐队，Barren演奏的是Death Metal/Grindcore/Crust Punk风格，他们也把自己的风格称之为“Chainsaw Grindcore”，2022年乐队在澳大利亚Grindhead Records厂牌发行了第一张正式专辑“I”，受到了广泛的关注和好评，目前乐队也刚刚和来自瑞典的Grindcore乐队Sickrecy发行了最新的Spilt专辑，如果你喜欢Old School Death Metal，Old School Grindcore和Punk的歌迷请你们注意这支乐队，在前不久乐队的吉他手Matias与我取得了联系进行了一次采访！

There are so many great bands from Belgium, I've interviewed a few bands from Belgium before, today I'm introducing you again a band from Belgium called Barren, although the band was only formed in 2017, every member of the band is an experienced musician playing extreme metal, the band's members have been involved in a lot of bands such as Emeth, Aborted. Agathocles, Human Vivisection, Slithering Decay, Fractured Insanity, Storm upon the Masses, all of these bands are very good bands in Belgium, Barren plays Death Metal/Grindcore/ Barren plays Death Metal/Grindcore/Crust Punk, which they also call "Chainsaw Grindcore", and in 2022 the band released their first official album "I" on Grindhead Records in Australia, which was well received. Hello Matias, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, say hello to your Chinese fans and friends, Barren Band. Founded in 2017, it is an old band with a history of 7 years. Who proposed the formation of this band in the first place? Does the name Barren mean something?

M: 嗨，Volcano，我们非常乐意回答你的问题！谢谢你接受我们的采访。我们在这里都过得很好，希望你们也一切顺利。你说得没错，我们从未接受过中国杂志的采访，我们非常感谢这次机会并想对所有中国粉丝和朋友说一声"非常感谢你们的支持"。是的，我们在2017年的某个时候走到了一起，最初的几个月我们主要是在写歌和确定我们的风格。从一开始我们就很清楚，我们想要做的是我们形容为"Chainsaw Grindcore"的东西，指的是经典的HM2声音。我们排练了很多次，写了很多Riff和歌曲。随着时间的推移，这些Riff和歌曲逐渐演变成了我们认为能代表我们目标的真正曲目。

Hey Volcano we are more then happy to answer your questions! thank you for the interview. We are all doing good over here. We hope you are doing fine as well. You are right, we have never been interviewed by a Chinese magazine, we appreciate this opportunity a lot and want to say a "big thank you for the support" to all our Chinese fans and friends. Yes we got together sometime 2017 and the first few months we were mainly working on songs and defining our style. It was clear from the beginning that we wanted to do something we describe as Chainsaw Grindcore; refering to the classic HM2 sound. We rehearsed a lot and wrote a lot of riffs and songs. Over time these riffs and songs evolved into really tracks that we felt represented what we were going for.

All the members of your band are first-generation members. You have not replaced any members. You are very familiar with each other. Jimmy Schippers and you are still teammates in the band Emeth. The other members have also participated in many bands. You are all creatives. Extreme metal masters with a lot of experience, can you tell us about your creative process?

M: 事实上，我们都有其他乐队的背景。我曾在90年代与Agathocles和Suppository合作，后来又与Aborted和Emeth合作。所有BARREN的音乐都主要由我自己创作，我在家里录制样带（吉他和中鼓）然后我们的鼓手加入自己的鼓。之后Jimmy和我一起创作演唱部分。

Indeed we all have a background in other band. I played in the 90’s with Agathocles & Suppository later I played with Aborted and Emeth. Well all BARREN music is mainly written by myself. I record demo tracks (guitar and mididrums) at home and later our drummer adds his own drums. After that Jimmy and I work on the vocals together.

Your band was established in 2017, but all your works were only created in 2021. What caused the delay for you to release your works?

Right when we wanted to start recording Corona virus happened. We tried to make the best out of the situation, throughout all the lockdows and things that are going on in the world we tried to record our music. Thats how and why I started my own little recording studio. The whole covid-19 situation delayed the band with almost 2 years.

You are very particular about the recording of all your works, and the recording effect of each album is excellent. In which studio did you record the album? Which producer produced your album?

M: 我们通常在我的小工作室"the chainsaw laboratory"录音。之后我们会选择一家录音室进行混音并完成专辑。到目前为止我们一直与比利时的"Hearse Studio"合作，专辑由我和Hearse Studio的Lander混音和制作。

We usually record at my little studio “the chainsaw laboratory”. Afterwards we choose a studio where we will mix and finish the album. Untill now we always worked with “Hearse Studio” in Belgium, the albums were mixed and produced by myself and Lander from Hearse studio

Your band's logo is very simple, but this design form is my personal favorite because I can easily remember your name. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is all designed in the form of mosaics of real photos. Who designed these artworks for you and what is his concept?

Our drummer Llano handles most of our artwork. He designed the logo and the covers of our first releases. For the ‘I’ album with we work together with Bahrullmarta.

What is the theme of your music about? What do you want to express through this musical theme? Did you write any lyrics? Who wrote these lyrics? What was his inspiration?

The main ‘theme’ or driving force behind our music and lyrics is our disgust with humans in general, this current ignorant and stupid society and the fucked up way the world is going.

You have cooperated with Grindhead Records and Grand Vomit Productions to release albums. Grindhead Records is an old Australian label and has released albums for many classic bands. Grand Vomit Productions is a new label that was just established. How did you get in touch with these two labels? Are you satisfied with their work?

We are really happy with the our collaboration with these fine labels. Having Grindhead releasing our first full album felt like a dream come true! They released so many great bands!! we got in contact with Grand Vomit Production because our friends in BERATED know them. Its a new young label but they are really professional and know their stuff. Super relax people to work with.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your first official album "I" in 2022. This is a typical Old School Grindcore work. Bands such as Nasum, Extreme Noise Terror, and Napalm Death I think have a deep influence on you, especially Napalm Death has a really deep influence on you, and your work is very similar to Napalm Death's early work. , with strong punk elements, I only have two words to evaluate your works: "crazy". Everything about your works is so crazy. After listening to your works, I feel like I have returned to the 1990s. You His works are as passionate as those of that era. What do you think of your works?

M: 谢谢您对我们音乐的肯定。是的，没有什么能比得上90年代那种令人毛骨悚然的经典Grindcore音乐，没有喘息，再加上HM2的声音，简直就是一堵野蛮和侵略性的墙。我们从未想过要独树一帜或做出什么惊世骇俗的创新，我们只想创造出属于自己的Grindcore风格并在节奏上偶尔做出一些意想不到的改变。快速的旋律、狂暴的人声和疯狂的鼓点，你知道......音乐能抓住你的心，直到你关掉唱片为止 :-)

Thank you for your positive words on our music. Yes, nothing beats the gnarly classic 90’s grind with no atmospheric respites, add to that the HM2 sound and its just a wall of brutality and aggression. We never intented to be unique or doing something amazingly new, we just wanted create our own slab of grind with a few unexpected tempo changes here and there. Fast riffing, furious vocals and crazy drums, you know… music that grabs you by the balls and that doesn’t let go untill you turn off the record :-)

V: 您参加过许多音乐节，哪些音乐节给您留下了深刻的印象？能介绍一下当时的气氛吗？

You have participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere at that time?

M: 你是指我的吉他手生涯吗？对我来说最特别的是参加WACKEN OPEN AI并能在欧洲、美国和加拿大巡演。

Do you mean in my career as a guitarplayer? Well the most special for me was playing WACKEN OPEN AIR and being able to do a lot of european, american and canadian tour.

V: 2024年乐队有什么新作品吗？比如你们会作曲、录制一些新歌或者参加一些新的音乐节，能向大家透露一些信息吗？我非常期待你们的新作品

Do you have any new work for the band in 2024? For example, if you are composing, recording some new songs or participating in some new music festivals, can you reveal some information to everyone? I'm very much looking forward to your new work

M: 是的，我们将推出两张新的合辑，第一张是与瑞典的SICKRECY合作的合辑，LP/CD版本将在SELFMADEGOD REC唱片公司发行，磁带版本将在BULLWHIP REC唱片公司发行。第二张专辑是与VOMIT SPELL合作的特别版合辑，将在NOXIOUS RUIN唱片公司发行。我们还录制了一张新的完整专辑，但目前仍在混音阶段。

Yes, we have 2 new split that will come out. The first will be a split with SICKRECY from sweden, it will be a LP/CD on SELFMADEGOD REC and tape version on BULLWHIP REC. The second release is a special edition split tape with VOMIT SPELL and it will be released on NOXIOUS RUIN. We also recorded a new full album, but we are still mixing that.

Barren is a great band. I have been following your band since your first demo. I will always support and follow your band. I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans can pay attention to it. I support you. Finally, do you have anything to say to your Chinese fans?
