Today we're interviewing Perpetual Fire, an Italian power metal band formed in 1999. As one of Italy's most significant power metal acts, the band initially changed its name three times—from Abyss to Steve's Flames to Fireside—before settling on Perpetual Fire. However, due to lineup issues, vocalist Roby Beccalli didn't join until 2002, when they released a demo. Drummer Steve Addis and bassist Mark Zampetti subsequently joined, solidifying the core lineup. Their debut album, “Endless World,” released in 2006 via Italy's Steelheart Records, achieved remarkable success. The band's subsequent releases continued this momentum, quickly establishing them as a sought-after act at numerous Italian music festivals. In 2022, the band released their fourth full-length album, “Virtual Eyes”—a truly remarkable work. Its blistering speed, catchy melodies, and powerful vocals cemented it as one of the finest power metal releases of 2022. Recently, our magazine connected with guitarist Steve Volta for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, it’s a pleasure to meet you and thank you so much for taking part in this interview! I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let’s say hello to all Chinese fans! Perpetual Fire were founded in 1999 and have a long and proud history. Who originally came up with the idea of forming the band?

S: 致各位中国乐友的问候！我是Steve Volta，我们乐队由衷欣喜且深感荣幸，Perpetual Fire乐队的专访终于登陆中国！是的，这是首次专访，但愿绝非终章！乐队诞生于我对Heavy Metal音乐的执着追求，融合了我毕生挚爱的所有音乐元素。我们追求旋律明快的曲风，搭配炽热的吉他独奏与震撼人心的主唱表现。乐队始于1999年，但直到2002年与主唱Roby Beccalli合作后，才正式推出首张演示带。随后贝斯手Mark Zampetti和鼓手Steve Addis加入，以这套阵容于2006年发行了首张专辑"Endless World"。

Hello to you and to all our Chinese friends! This is Steve Volta, and we, the band, are truly happy and honored that a Perpetual Fire interview is coming to China! Yes, this is the first interview, and we hope it won't be the last! The band was born from my desire to make heavy metal music, incorporating all the musical influences I've always loved. Fast, melodic songs with fiery guitar solos and great vocals. It all started in 1999, but it wasn't until 2002, with the collaboration of singer Roby Beccalli, that we were able to release our first real demo. Then bassist Mark Zampetti and drummer Steve Addis joined the band, and with this lineup, we released our first album, "Endless World," in 2006.

V: 多年来，你们经历了多次阵容更迭和更名。是什么促使你们做出这些选择，这些变化又如何影响了你们的音乐演变？

Over the years, you’ve gone through several lineup and name changes. What led you to make these choices, and how have they influenced your musical evolution?

S: 是的，我们最初的名字是“Fireside”，但后来发现已有同名乐队，于是我提议将“永恒”与“火焰”结合。对音乐的无限热忱，这正是我赋予这个名字的意义！在乐队坚持这么多年对任何人来说都很不容易。事实上，如今的Perpetual Fire中，相比最初阵容只剩下我和Mark。风格上我们确实经历了自然的音乐进化与成长，但聆听我们的专辑时，你仍能感受到贯穿始终的共同脉络。

Yes, our first name was "Fireside," but we discovered there was already a band with that name, so my idea was to put Perpetual and Fire together. An infinite passion for music, that's what it means to me! I think being in a band for so many years is difficult for anyone, in fact, in today's Perpetual Fire, only Mark and I remain, compared to the original lineup. Stylistically, we've certainly had a natural musical evolution and growth, but I think that listening to our albums, you can sense a common thread that ties them together.

V: 近年来，你们经历多次阵容变动后迎来了新主唱。这次合作是如何促成的？新主唱为乐队带来了什么？你对Perpetual Fire的新歌手的工作满意吗？

In recent years, you introduced a new vocalist after several lineup changes. How did this collaboration come about, and what has the new singer brought to the band? Are you satisfied with the new voice of Perpetual Fire?

S: 我认为Riccardo Re为我们的音乐注入了全新的维度，在个人层面，他也是个非常积极的人，我们相处得很好。他为乐队带来了一股清新的气息！作为Perpetual Fire的主创，Roby离队后我一直在寻找既能完美诠释经典曲目，又能为新专辑注入活力的主唱。当我在现场看到Riccardo与其他乐队演出时，立刻意识到他就是我寻觅的人选！我邀请他加入乐队，他当即表示非常感兴趣并坦言早已熟悉我们的作品。可以说这是我们最明智的选择！

I think Riccardo Re has brought a great new dimension to our music, and on a personal level, he's also a very positive person and we get along well. He's brought a breath of fresh air to the band! I'm Perpetual Fire's main songwriter, and after Roby left the band, I was looking for a singer who could both best interpret the old repertoire and also bring a new impetus to the new album. When I saw Riccardo live with another band, I realized he was the one I was looking for! I asked him to join the band, and he immediately told me he was very interested and that he already knew us. I'd say it was the best choice we could have made!

V: Perpetual Fire乐队已发行多张经典的专辑，显然你们是一群经验丰富的音乐人。能否谈谈你们的创作过程以及歌曲是如何创作的？

Perpetual Fire have released several albums that are now considered classics, and it’s clear that you are a group of highly experienced musicians. Can you tell us something about your creative process and how your songs come to life?

S: 一切都顺其自然。我尽可能多地的弹吉他；如果可以的话，我整天都会弹！但灵感往往不期而至——哪怕只是简单的吉他旋律或几个和弦，就足以点燃创作火花。我会顺势展开构思，逐步打磨成完整作品。先录制Demo版发送给乐队成员，再在排练室共同打磨，最终完成录音版本。

Everything comes naturally. I play guitar as much as I can; if I could, I'd play all day! Most of the time, though, ideas come naturally; even a simple guitar riff or a few chords is enough to spark inspiration. I try to follow it and craft a complete song. I record demos of the songs, which I then send to the other members of the band. We then work on them together in the rehearsal room, and the song is ready to be recorded.

V: 你们的专辑在录音和制作质量方面取得了显著进步。近期作品是在哪家录音室完成的？最新专辑或单曲的制作由谁负责？

Your albums show significant progress in terms of recording and production quality. Which studio did you record your recent works in? Who handled the production of your latest album or single?

S: Perpetual Fire乐队的每首歌曲都是在我家的录音室完成的。遗憾的是，我们没有预算租用设备齐全的大型专业录音室，只能就地取材。首张专辑是在鼓手位于废弃工业区的排练室里录制的。当时我只有一台电脑、一台Mackie调音台、一块Motu声卡，外加几支舒尔和AKG麦克风。我从未接受过专业录音工程培训，只能依靠对Cubase软件的有限了解硬着头皮操作。但我们竟奇迹般完成了专辑录制，甚至与Steelheart Records签下了合约。太不可思议了！随着时间推移，我在录音和混音方面积累了丰富经验，相信能在制作层面打造出优质专辑。歌曲母带处理也是我的专长。我对混音工作充满热忱，认为只要倾注心血，这便是一项极具艺术性的工作。我力求让每首混音作品都拥有独特个性，呈现契合歌曲气质的声音。我个人不太喜欢过于千篇一律的混音效果，尽管这种趋势已持续多年！

Every single Perpetual Fire song was recorded in my home studio. Unfortunately, we didn't have the budget for a large, well-equipped studio, so we've always had to make do. The first album was recorded in an abandoned industrial area where our drummer had a rehearsal space. I had a computer, a Mackie mixer, a Motu sound card, and a few Shure and AKG microphones. I didn't take any sound engineering courses, so I had to make do with the limited knowledge I had of Cubase. Somehow, we finished the album and even landed a record deal with Steelheart Records. Amazing! Over time, I've gained a lot of experience recording and mixing, and I think I can produce some good albums in terms of production. I also master the songs. I'm very passionate about mixing tracks and think it's a very artistic job if you put your heart into it. I try to ensure each mix has its own character and a sound that suits the songs. I don't particularly like some mixes that are too standard, even though I've noticed that trend has been going on for years!

V: 乐队成立于1999年，但首张专辑直到2006年才发行。是什么促使你们在多年后才推出这张专辑？是自然成长的周期，还是刻意为之的艺术选择？

The band was founded in 1999, but your first album wasn’t released until 2006. What led you to release it after so many years? Was it a natural period of growth or a deliberate artistic choice?

S: 正如我之前所说，筹备工作耗费了数年时间。最关键的是我们迟迟未能找到合适的鼓手。因此这绝非刻意为之，而是必须等到阵容完整才能推进。必须承认，早期作为Demo创作许多歌曲并不够格收录进专辑，所以这几年的打磨提升了我们的创作水平，让我们能为首张专辑精选更高水准的作品！至于创作录音环节，如今流程顺畅时效率很高，但当年情况截然不同——技术层面也是。当时键盘部分由我负责。自2016年起，我们迎来了杰出的键盘手Mauro Maffioli，他同时出色地完成了新音乐视频的剪辑工作。

As I said before, it took a few years to get things going. Most importantly, we couldn't find a drummer. So it definitely wasn't a conscious decision, but we had to wait until we had the full lineup. It must be said that many of the first songs we wrote as demos weren't worthy of an album, so having had a few years to improve our songwriting allowed us to choose higher-quality material for the first album! Now, when it comes to composing and recording, if everything goes smoothly, we're pretty fast, but back then, things were a little different, even technologically. I also handled the keyboard parts. Since 2016, we've had an excellent keyboard player named Mauro Maffioli. Who also did a great job editing our new music videos.

V: 你曾与Wanikiya Record、Sleaszy Rider Records和Steelheart Records等多家唱片公司合作发行专辑。你是如何与这些公司建立联系的？对他们的运作和支持是否满意？

You’ve collaborated with several labels such as Wanikiya Record, Sleaszy Rider Records and Steelheart Records for the release of your albums. How did you establish contact with these labels, and are you satisfied with their work and support?

S: 每家唱片公司都有自己的运作方式，随着音乐产业的剧变，这些方式显然也经历了多年演变。我们起步时CD还有些销量，如今它不过是演唱会上用来兜售的小玩意儿——毕竟所有音乐都已转为在线流媒体。可以肯定的是，我们与Wanikiya Record及其老板Mr. Jack合作得非常愉快。他给予我们前所未有的支持，让我们获得了飞跃性的成长！我们对合作成果及未来规划都深感满意。我们共同成长，更成为挚友！

Every label has its own way of working, which has obviously changed over the years as the music industry has changed so much. When we started, CDs were still selling a little, now they're just a gadget to sell at concerts because everything is streamed online. I can tell you that we get along great with Wanikiya Record and its boss, Mr. Jack. He supports us like never before, and we're truly growing so much! We're truly satisfied with our collaboration and with the many things we have planned for the future. We're growing together, and we're also great friends!

V: 你们的歌曲以强劲的旋律、充满活力的即兴演奏和充满张力的演唱而闻名。乐队成员的表演始终扎实精准。相比早期作品，你个人如何评价最近的创作？

Your songs are known for their powerful melodies, energetic riffs, and intense vocals. The performances of your musicians are always solid and precise. What’s your personal opinion about your most recent works compared to your earlier ones?

S: 我们创作音乐已有二十余载，我认为在创作中不拘泥于重复相同模式实属正常。许多新颖的创意与音色都融入了创作过程并与你的音乐文化底蕴及经验交融。首张专辑中我们更多受到Stratovarius风格Power Metal的影响，但随着时间推移，Hard Rock素逐渐凸显。在最近两张专辑"Virtual Eyes"和"Roll The Dice"中，由于拥有了固定键盘手，键盘编曲比重较以往大幅增加。这两张专辑还迎来了现任鼓手Sergio Gasparini，他以极具个人特色的演奏风格为鼓点部分注入了鲜明个性与原创性。音乐创作始终在演变，但对我而言，关键在于始终将激情与心血倾注于创作之中。

We've been making music for over twenty years, and I think it's normal not to always repeat the same formula in our compositions. Many new ideas and sounds are part of the time you're composing, and it all gets mixed with your musical culture and experience. On the first album, we were more influenced by Stratovarius-style power metal, but over time, more hard rock influences have emerged. On the last two albums, "Virtual Eyes" and "Roll The Dice," there are more keyboard arrangements than in the past, thanks to having a permanent keyboardist. On these two albums we also have our current drummer Sergio Gasparini who, with his very personal style, brought character and originality to the drum parts. There's always an evolution, but for me the important thing is always putting passion and heart into what you do.

V: 你们的新专辑刚刚发行就收获了热烈反响！能否谈谈这张新作？它对你们意味着什么？创作灵感又来自何处?

Your new album has just been released and is already receiving great feedback! Can you tell us more about this new work? What does it represent for you, and what inspired its creation?

S: 新专辑"Roll The Dice"标志着乐队的新起点与新机遇。当我们与合作多年的主唱分道扬镳时，乐队濒临崩溃边缘，数月间我们始终不确定这张专辑能否面世。那段艰难岁月里，我们坚信只要找到契合Perpetual Fire气质的歌者，这些新曲定能成功。幸运的是，Riccardo如明灯般照亮了前路！对我而言，这张专辑象征着救赎。我刚摆脱困扰多年的工作与音乐困境，创造转机过程充满挑战，恰似掷骰子般充满未知。我无法预知骰子会掷出什么点数...但迄今为止，似乎都是好运数字！

The new album "Roll The Dice" represents a new beginning and a new opportunity for our band. We were close to disaster when we parted ways with our longtime singer, and we spent months unsure if this album would ever see the light of day. It was a difficult time, but we were convinced that these new songs could be a success if we found the right voice and the right personality to be Perpetual Fire's singer. Luckily, Riccardo came along to light our way! For me, it represents redemption. I recently left a work/music situation that had severely affected me for many years, and it wasn't easy to create the conditions to do so. It was a challenge, just like rolling the dice. I couldn't have known what numbers would come up... so far, they seem to be good numbers!

V: 这些年来你登上了无数舞台。是否有哪场现场演出特别让你难忘？展望未来，2026年是否有新演唱会或音乐节的计划？

You’ve played on many stages over the years. Are there any live experiences that have particularly stayed in your heart? And looking ahead, do you already have plans for new concerts or festivals in 2026?

Perhaps my best memory of a concert with Perpetual Fire is our "Roll the Dice" release party last November 29th. It was a night when we were headlining in a concert venue that wasn't easy to fill, yet what happened was memorable. Lots of people came to hear our songs and stayed until the end, even asking for an encore! Of course, we're already planning several concerts for 2026, which will be announced soon. The third video, based on a song from the latest album, will be released in a few days. The first two videos, "Mr. Enchantment" and "My Private Hell" are doing very well, and we're very happy with how things are going! For now, the concerts are only scheduled in Italy, but I hope to bring our music to Europe as well, and who knows, even China! It would be a great honor to play in your magical country!
