The band I interviewed today is the Thrash Metal band Wodos from Canada. Wodos, formed in 2024, is composed of bassist Charles Fortin, drummer Justin Caron, guitarist Mikee Blanchet, and singer Benji Theriault. The band's name is derived from the song of the German Thrash Metal band Sodom. Although the band has only released one demo and one single, they are currently one of the hottest young bands in Canada. With their strong and aggressive Riff, complex arrangement, and pleasing Solo, they quickly gained attention and participated in some small live performances, which also made more people aware of this band. In a recent magazine, the band... I contacted the singer Benji Theriault of the band for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Wodos was founded in 2024 and is a very young band. How did you form this band in the first place? What is the origin of the band's name?

Hello, first of all, thank you so much for interviewing us in your magazine. We hope chinese scene gonna like our music ! Wodos was formed very organically. Two good friends (Justin, drummer, and Benji, vocalist) were discussing starting a band one day! We were both fans of old-school thrash metal! The project started quickly with a few temporary musicians! After trying out two guitarists with whom things didn't work out, we met Mikee. By pure chance, we learned he played guitar and asked him if he was interested in joining the band. He didn't hesitate and has now been part of the band for two years. Charles, the bassist, joined us shortly after; we had just let go of our first bassist. We didn't know Charles very well, but we knew he loved music and was always involved in metal shows. Charles is a guitarist who plays bass, but he immediately agreed to try the bass with us! He loved it immediately and the bass suits him very well!

All members of your band are first generation members. I think this will make it easier for you to create songs because you are very familiar with each other and know what kind of work you need to create. Can you introduce your creative process?

Indeed, all the members have been together almost from the beginning. We've already tried composing all together; it's not bad, but we find it works better when we separate! Mikee often composes the guitar parts on his own with Benji's help. Benji hums riff ideas that Mikee then plays on guitar, or Mikee brings pre-composed riffs that Benji analyzes and modifies. When Benji and Mikee find something they both like, we bring our project to the other two members, who then create their drum and bass parts.

Your music theme is about Horror, Violence, Murder, Corruption. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section. Who created these lyrics and what inspired them?

The themes of our music are often aggressive and violent; it's a way of expressing anger and frustration with everything that's happening in the world right now! It's a way for us to clear our heads and also to help people let off steam! Some songs, like "Head Dead," for example, tell the story of a young man who sees all the bad things happening in the world and in his country (corruption, war, violence, crime, exploitation) and feels powerless in the face of all this crap. It's a song that serves to release the frustration of not being able to do anything concrete in the face of life's injustice. Benji, the singer, writes all the lyrics; he's mainly inspired by his inner feelings and his passions (for example, "Crystal Lake" because he's a Friday the 13th fan).

V:你们的标志和专辑封面设计独特。谁为你设计了这些专辑艺术品，是什么启发了他们？

Your logo and album artwork are designed uniquely. Who designed these album artworks for you and what inspired them?

For the logo, Benji came up with the basic idea, and his girlfriend Alexanne redesigned it to suit the band's taste! The first version lacked sharpness; the new logo is grittier and more old-school. This logo is still somewhat experimental; a brand new one is in the works and will be released soon. As for the album cover, we chose a painting by the well-known artist Jack Kevorkian. He was nicknamed "dr Death" because he was one of the first to provide medical assistance in dying for his patients. He is a great inspiration to us since he went to prison for following his convictions and ideology.

V: 你们目前已经发布了一个demo和一首单曲，由您自己独立发布。你打算找一个正规的厂牌来发布你的作品吗？

You have currently released a demo and a single, which are independently released by yourselves. Do you plan to find a legitimate label to release your works?

Indeed, we've made four demo songs ourselves, and we have several other compositions that will be released very soon on a full album. For the moment, we're not planning on signing with a label; we're keeping our old-school DIY approach. But nothing prevents us from accepting a label one day if the offer is interesting.

Your works have received deep, fast, and intense riff from German Thrash Metal, complex arrangements, fast and precise drum beats, and the singer's singing is very passionate. What is your opinion on your own works?

It's always difficult to talk about your own work. We've received dozens of positive comments from all over the world (Chile, Germany, Poland, USA), all mentioning a revival of old-school thrash metal. We're very happy with these comments because that's exactly what we want to deliver. We consider ourselves very authentic and faithful to the traditional thrash style: no backing tracks, no metronome, no auto-tune or overly polished production (it's all intentional), just pure, unadulterated thrash. We want to perpetuate the true, authentic thrash metal, the way it all started! Pure, dirty, fast, aggressive metal that exists to insult commercial, clean, and overproduced music. We're quite proud and even more eager to release our first album to show everyone what we can do!

V: 你参加过现场表演吗？哪些现场表演给你留下了深刻的印象？你能介绍一下当时的气氛吗？2026年你打算参加哪些现场表演？

Have you ever participated in any live performances? Which live performances left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the atmosphere at that time? What live performances are you planning to participate in in 2026?

Our first year of touring was incredibly productive: around 30 shows in just 10 months! We played all over Quebec (french part of Canada) and even as far as Ottawa and Toronto. Our popularity exploded, which led to offers from several major local bands. We were lucky enough to play with Genetic Error, Christ Holmes (ex-WASP), and Quebec legends Soothsayer, but our proudest moment was being chosen from dozens of bands to open for BARF (Blasting All Rotten Fuckers). An last minute gig for one of the biggest quebec thrash metal legends of the '80s and '90s! The pressure was palpable, but we delivered a great show. Even the members of BARF were impressed, and the crowd went wild. For 2026, we plan to upgrade our tour schedule. Dozens of concerts are planned, including a tour with Drowning in Blood (a young Montreal thrash metal band) in Eastern Canada and an album launch tour with dbc (Dead Brain Cell) and Soothsayer. We'll also be playing Wacken Battle in our city, hoping to land at wacken open air festival in Germany. 2026 will be a pivotal year for Wodos, with many ambitious projects and guaranteed growth for the band.

What new work do you have to do in 2026? For example, creating, recording new works, or releasing your first official album? Can you share some information with everyone?

I am not very familiar with the Thrash Metal scene in Canada. Can you introduce the scene in your country? Which bands are worth recommending to everyone?

The scene has been incredibly strong for the past two or three years, with dozens of new bands forming and the genre's popularity only growing. Just to name a few to watch out for are Drowning in Blood, Chaos Wasteland, Postluven, Razorkill, and Retaliation. The scene is thriving, and the fan base is growing rapidly! Wodos plays a significant role in the resurgence of thrash metal in Quebec. We dedicate ourselves fully to supporting the underground scene, sharing bands, organizing numerous shows, bringing back veteran bands, and this year we released a CD/cassette compilation called Québec Thrash Attack Vol. 1. This compilation features 19 emerging bands from the local Quebec scene and is available on our Bandcamp page! We will continue to work tirelessly to expand this scene and bring true metal back to life!
