今天采访到的是来自英国的Death Metal乐队Impurist，组建于2022年Impurist是一支非常年轻的乐队，但是乐队所有成员都是来自英国Death Metal风格优秀的音乐家，曾经参加过多支经典的英国乐队，比如Extreme Noise Terror, Gorerotted，Bloodwork, Old Nature, Infected Disarray, Brutal Insanity, Grot, Hades Lab, Obliterated by Wormholes, Bonetar, Zarathustra, Debridement, Engorgement, Hellbastard, Malediction，Bonetar, Introrectalgestation, Scatorgy等乐队，2024年乐队在Macho Records厂牌发行了第一张EP专辑“Punishment Without Mercy”的磁带版本，限量100份，这张EP发行之后便受到了英国本土歌迷的关注，2025年乐队发行了第二张EP专辑“Evolving Cortex”，这张专辑有英国的783punx发行，如果你对英国的Old School Death Metal乐队感兴趣，那么请注意这支这支“年轻”的乐队，在新专辑发行之际杂志通过783punx厂牌的协助邀请到了乐队的歌手Ben参加这次的专访！

Today's interview is with Impurist, a Death Metal band from the UK, formed in 2022 Impurist is a very young band, but all the members of the band are excellent musicians from the UK Death Metal genre, and have played in a number of classic British bands such as Extreme Noise Terror, Gorerotted, Bloodwork, Old Nature, Infected Disarray, Brutal Insanity, Grot, Hades Lab, Obliterated by Wormholes, Bonetar, Zarathust, and many others. Hello Ben, nice to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time for your band to be interviewed by China magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all China fans. Impurist was founded in 2022. It is a very young band. Who proposed to form this band?

Thankyou, yes I think my first ever interview in China after 25 years of making music! Hello to all readers. Impurist started because Leaddy (bass) and Jon (drums) are old friends who had wanted to form a band together for many years. They started a three-piece band called Bonetar with Leaddy also doing vocals. When their guitarist left and they started working with Mark, the music was very different so they decided to form a new band which was Impurist.

You joined the band as a singer in 2023. How did you join the band at the beginning?

Jon and I are also old friends and former bandmates having played in Gorerotted together. Leaddy wanted to focus on his bass playing so Jon asked me if I would be interested in doing vocals. When I heard a rehearsal tape of the music the guys had made it blew my mind and I had to be involved!

Can you introduce your creative process? Every member of your band is an experienced musician who creates extreme metals. I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to more young musicians!
B: 通常Leaddy 会先想出一个旋律，然后他、Mark和Jon会在录音室里一起演奏，歌曲就从这里开始了，所以在这一点上，他们都是平等参与的。他们录好后把音乐发给我（我住的地方离他们有2个小时的车程）然后我听音乐，给每个音乐部分命名，计算小节和节拍并计算出每行需要多少个音节，然后我想我想唱的内容，然后让它们都押韵。他们的音乐是我创作过的最具挑战性的音乐，但也是最有成就感的音乐。
Leaddy usually comes up with a riff, then him, Mark and Jon jam in the studio and the songs come together from there so they're all equally involved at that point. They record and send me the music (I live a 2 hour drive from the guys). I then listen to it, name each musical section, count bars and beats and work out how many syllables I want per line, then I think of what I want to sing about and then make it all rhyme. Their music is the most challenging I have ever written to, but that also makes it the most rewarding.

Your two EP albums are excellent in recording. Which studio did you record the albums? Who produced the album for you? Did the recording process of the latest EP album go smoothly?

Thank you! We record the instruments live at our rehearsal space with the owner of the studio, then add some overdubs to thicken the sound, then after I have written lyrics I go and record the vocals. Then we send it all to Shaun Black in Southern England and he mixes and masters it. It works well for us because it is affordable and easy, but mainly because it gives us a really raw and natural but clear sound. None of us are fans of over-produced, compressed Metal music because at that point I think it loses all feeling and atmosphere. There were no problems at all, working with the guys in Impurist is always easy and fun, and we're also lucky that working with Shaun the producer, Josh the cover artist, Richard who prints our shirts, Edi from 783 Label and every one else has been very easy and efficient

Your music theme is about Death. Why do you choose such a music theme? What do you want to express through such a music theme? Did you write the lyrics? Who wrote these lyrics? What was his inspiration?
B: 我从小就对死亡着迷！我想这源于我6岁左右的时候，出于某种原因，我妈妈带我去看她垂死的叔叔。看到一个枯萎、虚弱、灰白的老人在一个散发着病态甜美死亡气息的房间里咽下最后一口气（任何靠近过尸体的人都会知道我说的那种难以形容却又无懈可击的气味是什么意思！）然后第一次参加葬礼，他们把他放在一个箱子里，每个人都穿着黑色的衣服，表情悲伤，还告诉我必须表现得很好，这无疑给我留下了深刻的印象！从那时起，只要我一识字，我的课文就总是关于鬼怪、妖魔鬼怪、民间传说和恐怖的。我11岁那年，老师把我妈妈叫到学校，因为她觉得我是个迷恋死亡、暴力和血腥的坏孩子。这就是我接触Death Metal的原因！突然之间我发现这种听起来不似人类的音乐，其主题对我产生了深远的影响。
I was obsessed with death from a very young age! I think it stems from when I would have been around 6 years old and for some reason my mum took me to see her dying uncle. Seeing a withered, wasted, grey old man taking his last breaths in a room with a very sickly sweet death smell (anyone who's ever been near a corpse will know what I mean by that indescribable but unmistakable odour!) then attending a funeral for the first time where they brought him in in a box with everyone dressed in black with sad expressions and being told I had to behave well, it definitely left its mark! From that point on, as soon as I could read it was always about ghosts, monsters, demons, folklore and horror. The teacher called my mum in to the school when I was 11 because she thought I was a fucked up kid, obsessed with death, violence and gore. Thats the reason I found my way to Death Metal! Suddenly I'd found this inhuman sounding music that was all about this subject matter that had had such a profound effect on me for as long as I could remember.

Jon knew them from releasing a tape with his other band Malediction. Macho are a great label, a one man DIY operation done purely for the love of the music. He is in a great Scottish Death Metal band called Brainbath, check them out! He also co-hosts an annual festival in Scotland called Dead Of Winter fest. We are very happy to work with people as passionate about this music as us who do it purely for the love of it, which is why we also released the first EP via Brutal Cave in Europe and Bleeding Edge in the USA. This time around we are working with Bleeding Edge again and also 783 Label, a great UK/Europe based Metal and Punk DIY label which is again run by one man from his home as a side hobby from his day job. Its important to us that these people want to be involved because they love the music, not just because they want to make money. He also answers messages very quickly, works his ass off, has good contacts and I can drive to his house in less than 30 minutes, so 783 Label is perfect for us right now.

The logo of your band is beautifully designed. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also very unique. Who designed these album artwork for you?

The logo on the first EP was Wibusuck who is on Instagram, I believe he is based in Indonesia. It was then re-designed by Josh from An-Aesthetic design. Josh also did the new EP artwork, we asked him to make something that looked like a bad LSD trip where someone thinks tentacles growing from their brain are coming out of their ears to strangle them! We love what he's done and how it stands out from most of what we see other people do.

First of all, congratulations to you for just releasing the latest EP album "Evolving Cortex" this year. You are an Old School Death Metal band, with a fast and continuous Riff like a chainsaw, which makes people feel crazy. The drummer's precise and quick strike is also the biggest highlight of your works. Your deep and powerful singing makes your works more evil. What do you think of your works?

Yeah I think you're right, we grew up on Death and Black Metal bands from the 80s and 90s, but also with raw sounding Punk, Hardcore, Thrash, Doom and other Metal styles so we play a high energy, very dark style of old school Death Metal. Leaddy and Mark are great musicians, Mark creates some real atmosphere alongside the brutality with his guitar, Leaddy's bass properly locks in with Jon's drums which have always been phenomenal since I first met him and I feel privileged to be making music with such talented and creative musicians.
V: 你们乐队参加过现场表演吗？哪些现场表演给你留下了深刻的印象？能谈谈当时的气氛吗？2025 年你们还会参加哪些现场表演？
Did your band participate in live performances? What live performances left a deep impression on you? Can you tell us about the atmosphere at that time? What other live performances are you going to attend in 2025?

We've played a few shows yeah and on each bill we have fit but also stood out if that makes sense? We were recently on a Black Metal line up and although we were different from the other bands there was something there the crowd could enjoy and it worked well. When we play straight up Death Metal shows we still kind of stand out but again, I think there's something they can all enjoy in our music. And the last show was opening a Hardcore line up, and although musically we were quite different from the other bands we went down really well with the crowd. I think its because of the realism of us as people, we don't put on a persona on when we go on stage, we're just ourselves, no pretentions, no drama, no theatrics, just genuine. Being heavy as fuck, fast, tight and intense onstage also helps though!

Thats right, Jon and I played in Gorerotted together, Im still in Extreme Noise Terror though we don't do a lot now and also a Hardcore band called Mugged Off. Jon was in Hellbastard and also plays in Malediction, Infected Disarray and many others, Leaddy was in Introrectalgestation and Scatorgy and Mark was in Winterfylleth. So yeah, we are a new band but all have many years of touring, writing and recording experience. We have no delusions of grandeur, we're just 4 friends passionate about our music and being creative and will keep going as long as its still fun!
