Today we’re interviewing Urban Spine, a heavy metal band from Luxembourg. This marks the first time our magazine has featured a band from Luxembourg. Formed in 2020, Urban Spine has now been active for six years. Although they’re a relatively young band, their music is remarkably mature, grounded, and grand. Their first full-length album of 2026, “Cruelty by Design,” has become one of the most noteworthy releases of the year. With brilliant, retro riffs and solos, superb arrangements, precise and fast drumming, and soaring, passionate vocals, the band has quickly become one of the hottest acts in Luxembourg right now. To mark the release of their new album, our magazine reached out to Urban Spine for an exclusive interview!

Hello there—it’s a pleasure to meet you, and thank you so much for taking part in this interview. I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. To start things off, please say hello to all your fans in China. Urban Spine was formed in 2020—a band with a six-year history—so how did you all come together to form the group?
First of all, hello to everyone in China, and thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to introduce Urban Spine to Chinese metal fans. As far as we know, this is indeed our first interview with a Chinese magazine, which makes it something special for us. I founded Urban Spine in 2020 after having already gained extensive experience in several previous bands. My intention was to create what I would describe as “honest music for honest people”: music without pretence, written because we genuinely enjoy it and have something to express. Old-school thrash metal has always been my favourite form of metal, so it naturally became one of the strongest foundations of our sound. Our drummer, Fränz Pellé, and I had previously played together in both a hard-rock band and a heavy-metal band. I knew his playing, I trusted him, and it was clear to me that he should help me build the rhythmic foundation of Urban Spine. The earliest line-up was partly an experimental phase during which we explored several possible musical directions. After our first singer, Judy Milne, left the band, Jorge joined us, followed approximately six months later by Valenti Canadell. This was during the period when Pascal Steinberger was our singer. With Fränz, Jorge, Valenti and me, the musical foundation of Urban Spine was essentially in place. We all shared an appreciation for old-school thrash metal, and the instrumental identity of the band became increasingly clear. The remaining challenge was finding the voice that would complete that sound.
Between 2021 and 2024, your band brought in a new guitarist, Valenti Canadell, and a new vocalist, Lio Reinhard. Why did the original members leave? How did the new members join the band, and are you satisfied with their work?
The early changes were not the result of one dramatic breakup. Urban Spine was still developing its identity, particularly with regard to the vocals. Judy Milne had a voice that was more rooted in rock than metal. After she left, Pascal Steinberger became our singer during the period when Jorge and, approximately six months later, Valenti joined the band. Pascal’s approach was strongly influenced by Metallica. He contributed to the development of the band and also wrote some of the lyrics, but we were still searching for the precise vocal character that would fully complement the music. Alexis Korpas followed Pascal. His approach was more traditionally heavy metal and strongly influenced by Rob Halford. We played our first live concerts with Alexis, so he was an important part of the moment when Urban Spine developed from a rehearsal-room project into a genuine live band. However, Alexis eventually decided to take an extended break from music in order to travel the world. His departure gave us both the opportunity and the necessity to search for the singer who would definitively complete the band. That singer was Lio Reinhard. His raw, aggressive voice, including his grunts and growls, gave Urban Spine the vocal identity we had been looking for. He did not simply replace a previous singer; his voice completed the musical foundation that had already been established by the instrumental line-up. We are extremely satisfied with both Valenti and Lio. Valenti shares our love of old-school thrash metal and has contributed his own musical and lyrical ideas, with “Rise and Fight” being the clearest example. Lio brought the final element that had been missing: a distinctive voice capable of expressing the aggression, darkness, emotion and occasional black humour within our music.
You’ve just released your first full-length album; could you tell us about the creative concept and the process behind it? What new creative inspiration did the new guitarist bring to the album?
The album documents the musical development of Urban Spine. The earliest songs were written mainly by me and had a stronger traditional heavy-metal influence. Some of those early compositions eventually disappeared back into the drawer because they no longer fitted the direction in which the band had evolved. From the beginning, harmony between the vocals, guitars and rhythm section was very important to me. This can be heard particularly in choruses such as those in “War Games” and “Valkyrie”. We wanted heavy music with aggression and power, but also with memorable melodies and arrangements that serve the song. “Valkyrie” has a rather amusing origin. At the time, I was also playing in a blues-rock cover band and wanted to create a heavier rock version of Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”. While experimenting with the idea, I drifted further and further into metal until I finally abandoned the cover concept completely and wrote an entirely new Urban Spine song. “Valerie” had transformed into “Valkyrie”, which is probably not what Amy Winehouse originally had in mind. Valenti introduced another songwriter’s perspective to the band. His preference for old-school thrash metal fits naturally with ours, but he does not merely imitate what already exists. “Rise and Fight” is the clearest example of his creative contribution to the album, as the song was largely written by him, both musically and lyrically.
The recording quality of this album is outstanding. Which studio did you record it in? Who produced the album? Did the recording process go smoothly?
Thank you very much. We are especially pleased that you noticed the production quality because a great deal of time, thought and effort went into it. The entire album was recorded and produced in Nancy, France, with Fabien Cruzille. Fränz Pellé recorded all the drum parts, and every musician played his own instrument on the album. What you hear is therefore the band itself rather than a collection of anonymous session musicians or programmed substitutes. The songs were not treated as completely finished and untouchable compositions when we entered the studio. During the recording sessions, new ideas emerged, and we continued to adjust certain parts and arrangements. Sometimes you only realise what a song still needs when you hear every element clearly under studio conditions. Fabien’s professional feedback as producer was also very important to us. We did not want somebody who would simply press the record button; we wanted an experienced outside perspective capable of questioning an arrangement, identifying weaknesses and suggesting improvements. We remained open to his advice while ensuring that the final result still sounded unmistakably like Urban Spine. The process therefore involved more than merely documenting the songs as we had rehearsed them. Recording became an additional stage of composition and refinement. It required patience and occasionally meant reconsidering ideas we had already regarded as finished, but the album ultimately became stronger because of it. Overall, the collaboration went very well, and Fabien played an important role in shaping the final sound of Cruelty by Design.
What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this theme, and what do you wish to express through it? You also wrote lyrics for the music—who penned them, and what was the inspiration behind them?
We do not restrict ourselves to one single lyrical concept. Most of our songs deal with subjects that have personally affected us, happened to us or made us think. This allows us to write with genuine emotion rather than choosing topics merely because they appear suitably “metal”. At the same time, our black humour is an important part of Urban Spine. We do not always take ourselves completely seriously, and this can also be heard in songs such as “IDGAF”, meaning “I Don’t Give a Fuck”, or in our rather unusual “love song”, “Corpse Agenda”. “Corpse Agenda” is most certainly not a ballad. It is a dark homage to The Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The story is told from the perspective of a deeply disturbed killer who interprets his obsession with his victims as a form of love. The horror comes not only from what he does, but from the fact that, inside his own mind, it makes emotional sense. The tearing vocal delivery, grunts and growls reinforce that disturbed perspective. The lyrics on the album were written partly by me, partly by Pascal and partly by Lio. “Rise and Fight” came mainly from Valenti, both musically and lyrically. “D.O.A.”, “War Games” and “Valkyrie” were entirely my fault—for which I apologise! In our current writing process, Lio increasingly takes responsibility for the lyrics. I consider that important because a singer can express emotions most convincingly when the words genuinely feel like his own.
Your band's logo has a very simple design, yet this is the style I personally prefer because it makes the name easy to remember. What is the significance of the red decorative element in the center of the logo? Your album artwork is beautiful—who designed it for you, and does it hold any specific meaning?
The original lettering was created around 2023 by the Indonesian artist Rama from Civilaction Art, whose portfolio also includes official merchandise artwork for established metal bands such as HAVOK. He developed the lettering after listening to several ideas from our pre-production. However, I still felt that the logo needed a distinctive symbol—almost a kind of mascot. We initially worked with a Mexican artist to develop such an image. Although the idea did not ultimately become our main logo, we did use the resulting artwork for a T-shirt design. The original Urban Spine lettering was also arranged vertically, which did not entirely convince us. I then spent days thinking about a symbol that would be simple, recognisable and directly connected to the name. Eventually, I designed the central spine, with the shapes on the left and right suggesting ribs: literally an “Urban Spine”. Blood red was the only possible colour. We needed a strong contrast that would remain immediately recognisable on flyers, shirts, banners and other promotional material. The album cover was also created by Rama from Civilaction Art according to our ideas. It portrays society as being divided between an elite—the people controlling the game—and the ordinary population, represented by chess pieces. The elite builds its wealth upon the suffering of the people beneath it. The chessboard symbolises both political power games and the conflict between oppression and protest or revolution. The police on the board, together with military aircraft and bombs, reinforce this idea. The elite controls oil, fuel and pharmaceuticals, representing the systems upon which society has become dependent. The artwork is therefore not merely decorative; it is a visual representation of the album title, Cruelty by Design.
You chose to self-release this album as a limited edition of 300 CDs; why didn't you opt to have a record label release it for you? Would you consider collaborating with a label for your next album?
For a debut album, self-releasing was the most direct way to bring the music to the public while retaining control over the production, presentation and timing. We did not want to wait indefinitely for somebody else to decide whether the album deserved to exist. The 300 CDs are a genuine physical edition rather than merely a digital release with a token handful of copies. Physical media still matter to us and to many metal fans. There is something fundamentally different about holding the artwork, booklet and music in your hands. We are not opposed to working with a record label in the future. If a serious label understands our music, respects our identity and can offer meaningful distribution and promotion, we would certainly consider a collaboration. However, signing a contract simply to have a label’s name printed on the CD would not be enough.
First of all, congratulations on the release of your band's debut album this year. The production quality—from recording to post-production—is outstanding, and the meticulous attention paid to the arrangements of every track is evident; one can truly feel the heart and effort you put into it. The drummer delivers a rock-solid, brilliant performance throughout the album, the guitar solos are superb, and the vocalist’s performance is full of passion and energy. What are your own thoughts on this album?
Thank you very much for those words. They mean a great deal to us because they describe exactly what we hoped listeners would recognise: the effort, personality and energy behind the album. We are proud of Cruelty by Design. It is not only a collection of songs but also a record of how Urban Spine found its identity. You can hear the traditional heavy-metal roots, the growing thrash influence, the aggressive vocals and the individual musical personalities of the band members coming together. Naturally, musicians always hear things they might approach differently with the benefit of hindsight. That is part of developing. Nevertheless, the album honestly represents who we were when we made it, and we would rather release something with character than something technically perfect but emotionally empty. Fränz gave the album a very strong rhythmic foundation, the guitars complement one another without losing their individual voices, and Lio supplied the missing final element with his passionate and aggressive delivery. For us, the album proves that the long search for the right line-up and the right sound was worthwhile.
Which music festivals or live performances have you attended? Which ones left a deep impression on you, and could you describe the atmosphere at the time?
Every Urban Spine concert matters to us. We simply love performing live and releasing all the energy that has accumulated inside the music. In my case, there is usually at least one kilogram of body weight separating me before and after a show! Urban Spine is fundamentally a live band. We do not have one concert that we regard as the only beautiful or important one because every show leaves a memory: the venue, the audience, the other bands and everything that either went perfectly or went completely wrong. However, if we had to identify the most important performance, it would probably be our very first one. Without that first step onto a stage, we might not be having this conversation today. It was the moment when Urban Spine stopped being merely an idea or a rehearsal-room project and became a real live band.
What new projects do you have lined up after the release of this album? For instance, will you be continuing to write new songs? Could you share some details with everyone?
Yes, we are continuing to write new material. Urban Spine is not intended to be a band that releases one album and then spends years merely repeating it. We already have several new ideas in development, as well as songs that are essentially finished. One of the new ideas is “DEFCON 1”, which is developing into a full-scale thrash-metal assault. The song deals with the tension, terror and dystopian atmosphere of nuclear war: the feeling of escalation, the approaching catastrophe and the point at which political power games can no longer be reversed. Musically, it is intended to reflect that growing pressure and sense of imminent destruction. We also have completed songs such as “Muscle and Blood”, which deals with street fighting and has a correspondingly physical and confrontational character. Another example of our darker direction is “Corpse Agenda”, our horror-inspired “love song”, told from the perspective of a disturbed killer. Lio is now taking a more active role in writing lyrics, while musical ideas increasingly come from several members rather than from one principal songwriter. This is important for the further development of the band because every member brings a different personality and perspective. The new material will retain our Heavy/Thrash foundation, but we are not afraid to make individual songs darker, faster, more aggressive or more atmospheric when the subject requires it. Above all, we do not want simply to reproduce Cruelty by Design. The next songs should clearly sound like Urban Spine while also showing that the band has continued to evolve.
Luxembourg actually has many excellent bands. I’m familiar with a few from your country—such as Desdemonia, Embryonic Death, Surgical Abuse, and Fetuxion (which is one of the oldest bands there). I’m really curious about the metal scene in Luxembourg; could you tell Chinese fans a bit about it? Perhaps you could recommend some bands or mention music festivals held there?
Luxembourg is a very small country, but its metal scene is remarkably diverse. Because the country lies between Germany, France and Belgium, the scene naturally has an international character. Bands frequently share stages with musicians from neighbouring countries, and audiences are accustomed to hearing different languages and many different styles of metal. The relatively small size of the scene also means that many bands know and support one another. Among the bands we regard as friends and important representatives of Luxembourg’s metal scene are Sublind, Kraton, Fusion Bomb, Praetor, Scarlet Anger, Dreadnought and Blanket Hill. Together with bands such as those you mentioned, they demonstrate that Luxembourg has considerably more to offer than outsiders might expect from such a small country. Two festivals particularly stand out to me: the Kopstal Metal Festival and the EMF—the Eisleker Metal Fest. The EMF is primarily an international festival. Its line-up consists mainly of bands from other countries, while one Luxembourgish band is usually invited to represent the local scene. One of the festival’s objectives is to bring that Luxembourgish band into direct contact with international bands, allowing musicians to build relationships and become better connected beyond our national borders. In a country as small as Luxembourg, creating these international connections is extremely valuable. We are therefore especially pleased that Urban Spine will be the Luxembourgish band appearing at the 2026 edition of the Eisleker Metal Fest. We will perform in Rambrouch on September 26 alongside an international line-up including O.Z., Scavenger, Toranaga, Dragon, Syrion and Spartan Warrior. Luxembourg may be small on the map, but its metal scene is active, dedicated and outward-looking—and its amplifiers are quite capable of compensating for the country’s size.
You are a classic band; despite your youth, your work is incredibly mature. I will continue to follow and support you, and I hope this interview helps more Chinese fans discover and support your music. As we wrap up, is there anything you would like to say to your fans in China?
First of all, thank you for listening to our album so carefully and for asking questions that show genuine interest in the music, the artwork and the people behind Urban Spine. We truly appreciate it. To everyone in China who discovers us through this interview: thank you for giving a band from a very small European country some of your time. Metal has the ability to connect people who may live thousands of kilometres apart, speak different languages and come from entirely different cultures. The music still communicates directly. Urban Spine stands for honest music made by real people—with aggression, melody, serious subjects and a healthy amount of black humour. We hope you hear something in it that speaks to you. Support the bands you love, keep physical music alive, and never be afraid to make some noise. We sincerely hope that one day we will have the opportunity to bring Urban Spine to China and meet some of you in person. Stay loud and stay honest!
