Hermit Dreams was born in 2023 as a new band project by Eyvind, the founder of the veteran Norwegian death metal band Diskord. As an experienced musician, Eyvind composed many complex and musically rich songs for Hermit Dreams, music with a distinct character from Diskord's work. A characteristic of Hermit Dreams' music is their extensive use of the banjo, though not as a primary instrument. In 2025, the band released their debut full-length album, *Desperate Anomies*, quickly gaining widespread attention from death metal fans worldwide. This April, Hermit Dreams held their first performance at the Inferno Festival in their hometown of Norway. The magazine conducted an interview with the band's founder, Eyvind W. Axelsen.

Hello, brother. It's great to meet you, and thank you so much for joining us for this interview. I believe this is your band's first time being interviewed by a Chinese magazine, right? First off, please say hello to all your Chinese fans. When was Hermit Dreams formed? How did you come together to start this band?

E: 你好，感谢你们的联系！这确实是我们第一次接受中国杂志的采访。来自挪威的问候，也向你们的读者们问好！Hermit Dreams乐队最初是由我Eyvind，几年前创作的一些歌曲组成的。起初我打算把这些歌用在我的另一个乐队Diskord里，但过了一段时间后，我意识到这和Diskord的音乐风格截然不同，于是组建新乐队的想法就逐渐成形了。2023年8月，我写信给我们的鼓手Bjørn Tore和班卓琴/吉他手Martin，问他们是否愿意尝试组建一支新乐队。我给他们发了一些音乐作品草稿，幸运的是，他们很感兴趣，于是Hermit Dreams乐队就此诞生。不久之后我们又招募了Eirik，乐队阵容就此完整。

Hello, and thanks for reaching out! This is indeed the first time that we are interviewed by a Chinese magazine. Cheers from Norway to all your readers! Hermit Dreams began as a collection of songs that I, Eyvind, wrote a few years back. Initially, I thought I would use these songs in my other band, Diskord, but after a while I realized that this was a very different sound, and so the idea of starting a new band began to materialize. In August 2023, I wrote to Bjørn Tore, our drummer, and Martin, our banjo and guitar player, and asked if they were up for starting up something new. I sent them a few sketches, and thankfully they were interested, and so, Hermit Dreas was born. A little while later, we recruited Eirik, and the lineup was complete.

Are all four members of your band original members? Have you ever had any lineup changes?

Your work is truly stunning, and the arrangements are incredibly complex. Could you tell us about your creative process?

E: 谢谢！创作过程在我脑海中酝酿已久。我一直想探索一种与我参与的其他乐队略有不同的音乐风格，于是我开始通过歌曲草稿和想法慢慢塑造这支乐队的声音。从这个意义上说，创作过程是孤独的。然而，当所有成员都到位后，我们投入了大量精力在编曲上，每位成员都贡献良多。我们为所有歌曲制作了完整的demo，并反复推敲编曲和音效，讨论哪些部分效果好，哪些部分需要替换或重新编排。

Thank you! The creative process has been something that has been ongoing in my head for quite some time. I have been wanting to explore a somewhat different soundscape from the other bands I am involved with, and I slowly started to shape the sound of this band through song sketches and ideas. In that sense, the creative process has been one of solitude. However, when I got the full lineup together, a lot of work was done with the arrangements, to which every member contributed a lot. We made full demos of all the songs, and worked on the arrangements and sounds, discussing what was working and what needed to be replaced or rearranged.

V: 你们2025年专辑的音质非常出色。你们是在哪个录音室录制的？专辑的制作人是谁？

The sound quality on your 2025 album is outstanding. Which studio did you record it in? And who was the producer for the album?

E: 实际上，所有的录音都是我们自己完成的，包括排练室和家里的录音。之后辑由我们的成员Martin负责录音和混音，他拥有一家名为Sounds of O Studio的小型录音室；我们在他家地下室里花了几个小时讨论混音，反复调整每一个细节，直到满意为止。母带处理由 Colin Marston 完成，他曾为Gorguts和Behold! The Arctopus 等乐队制作母带。他也参与过 Diskord 的母带制作，所以我知道他非常适合这个项目，而且我对他在声音和动态方面的精准把握非常敬佩。因此，当他同意担任我们的母带工程师时，我非常高兴。

We actually did all the recording ourselves, in rehearsal spaces and in our homes. Then the album was engineered and mixed by our member Martin, who has a small studio called Sounds of O Studio; we spent many hours in his basement discussing the mix, and tweaking every detail until we were satisfied. The mastering was done by Colin Marston, known from such acts as Gorguts and Behold! The Arctopus, etc. He has also been involved with mastering releases for Diskord, so I knew that he was a great guy for this project, and I have immense respect for his fingerspitzengefühl when it comes to sound and dynamics. So I was very happy when he agreed to be our mastering engineer.

V: 你们的首张正式专辑"Desperate Anomies"是与墨西哥的Chaos Records合作发行的，Chaos Records 是一家非常优秀的唱片厂牌。你们是如何与他们取得联系并开始合作的？你们对Chaos Records的工作满意吗？

You released your first official album, “Desperate Anomies,” in collaboration with Mexico's Chaos Records, an outstanding label. How did you establish contact and begin working with them? Are you satisfied with the label's work?

E: 我们向几家唱片公司寄送了一张demo并收到了一些回复。当时Chaos Records的报价似乎最有吸引力，而且他们能够迅速完成专辑的制作和发行，这对我们来说非常重要。实体唱片的发行目前有些延误，但看起来很快就能解决了。

We sent out a demo to several labels and got a few responses. At the time, Chaos Records seemed to have the most interesting offer and was able to turn around rather quickly and get the album out, which was important to us. Things have been a bit delayed with the physical formats now, but it seems like this is about to be resolved soon now.

V: 你们乐队的标志设计得非常漂亮。是谁设计的？你们的专辑封面非常抽象。是谁设计的？灵感来自哪里？

Your band's logo is beautifully designed. Who created it for you? Your album artwork is very abstract. Who designed it? What inspired them?

E: 是James Tukik根据我的指示设计的。专辑封面是由挪威艺术家 Kim Diaz Holm（又名 Den Unge Herr Holm）绘制的。他专门为这张专辑创作了这幅作品，我对最终的成果非常满意。我们简单地交流了一下想法，他一边听着专辑的demo一边完成了整幅画作。在我看来，他成功地用画作捕捉到了专辑的精髓！

The logo was designed by James Tukik, after my directions. The album artwork was painted by Norwegian artist Kim Diaz Holm, also known as Den Unge Herr Holm. He made this piece specifically for this release, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. We had a brief exchange of ideas, and he painted the whole thing while listening to the demo of the album. In my opinion, he managed to capture the spirit of the recording in his painting!

V: 你们的音乐主题是什么？为什么选择这个主题？你们想通过它表达什么？你们自己创作歌词吗？是谁作曲的？创作灵感来自哪里？

What is the theme of your music? Why did you choose this theme, and what do you aim to express through it? Did you write any lyrics, and who composed them? What inspired them?

E: 专辑的歌词主题内省，探讨了孤独、恐惧、困惑和惊奇等情感。歌词由Eirik和我共同创作。之所以选择这些主题，是因为它们经常萦绕在我的脑海中。

The lyrical themes of the album are introspective, and deal with feelings such as loneliness, fear, confusion and wonder. The lyrics were composed by Eirik, and by me. The reason for choosing these themes is simply that they occupy my mind quite a lot.

First off, congratulations on releasing your debut full-length album “Desperate Anomies” in 2025. It's an absolutely stunning work. The brutal death metal elements combined with heavy, slow doom elements make your sound truly unique. Both vocalists deliver standout performances, especially the clean vocals—utterly breathtaking. The other vocalist's vicious, venomous growls complement the clean vocals, creating a singular aesthetic beauty. Beyond guitars, bass, and drums, you incorporate instruments like the theremin, shruti box, cello, and banjo. These additions significantly enhance the atmospheric depth of your album. What are your thoughts on your own work?

E: 谢谢！这张专辑的创作初衷是探索死亡/厄运金属领域的新声音。我认为大提琴和班卓琴在这种音乐风格中都还没有得到充分利用，它们拥有巨大的潜力。运用主流之外的不同乐器，可以表达不同的情绪，并可能为这种音乐类型带来全新的诠释，创作出既能吸引听众又能带来惊喜的音乐。

Thanks! It has been a conscious effort with this release to try to explore new sounds in the realm of death/doom metal. I think that both the cello and the banjo are underutilized and hold great potential in this kind of music. Utilizing different instruments from the mainstream allow the expression of different moods, and may give way to a fresh take on the genre, with music that both captivates and surprises the listener.

V: 你们乐队参加过哪些现场演出？哪些演出给你们留下了深刻的印象？能否描述一下那些演出的氛围？你们2026年有哪些现场演出计划？

What live performances has your band participated in? Which ones left a lasting impression on you? Could you describe the atmosphere at those shows? What live performances are you planning for 2026?

E: 我们的首张专辑于2025年12月发行，目前为止我们只演出过一场：2026年4月在挪威奥斯陆举行的Inferno音乐节。我们计划在秋季参加Legend Metalfest音乐节。还有一些其他的计划正在讨论中，但目前除此之外，我无法透露太多。如果有演出商想要邀请我们演出，请随时联系我们。

Our debut album came out in December 2025, and thus far we have only played a single gig: The Inferno Festival in Oslo, Norway, in April 2026. We have another festival appearance planned for the autumn, at Legend Metalfest. There are some other plans that are being discussed, but beyond that there is not much that I can share at the moment. What new projects does your band have planned for 2026? For instance, composing and recording new songs—can you share any details with us?

E: 我们计划再举办几场演出，而且我已经开始着手创作第二张专辑的歌曲了——敬请期待！

We plan to play some more shows, and I have started working on songs for our sophomore album – stay tuned!

You are an exceptionally talented band. Though you're still young, your work shows remarkable maturity. I'll continue to follow and support your band, and I hope this interview will help more people discover and support you. As we wrap up, is there anything you'd like to say to your Chinese fans?

E: 非常感谢！很高兴有机会向中国观众展示我们的作品，希望有一天我们能去你们美丽的国家演出——目前为止我只是以游客的身份来过。
