Hello Thomas, this is likely Mork's first interview with a Chinese metal magazine. First of all, thank you very much for agreeing to speak with us. Greetings!
I am not sure, I may believe so. If so, that is fantastic. It’s just shy one month since we were in China for the first time ever. What a great experience that was. Thanks for having us.
Many audience who attended your shows in Beijing and Yiwu were blown away by your live performances. Nearly everyone who experienced your shows exclaimed, “It was totally worth it!” and “The live show was even better than the album!” Have you received similar feedback from audiences in other regions? What do you think makes your live performances so highly praised?
Both concerts were great and beyond our expectations. When we visit a new country and unknown grounds like this, it is always a curiosity to see how the response will be. How many people will be there and how will the ones who’s there react. Beijing was obviously our very first meeting with the Chinese crowd and it was great. We did a massive meet and greet after the show, which also is nice to be able to see the supporters for real. And to see people bring in Mork vinyls and merch not sold at the concert is a reassuring thing, which proves that MORK has reached beyond these borders even before we ever physical visited. Yes, we have gotten that feedback before regarding the live shows compared to the albums. The albums are more atmosphere based and created by myself alone as a lonely journey into my own mind, thoughts and feelings. Live is a more energetic experience where the songs bring out a more aggressive and physical experience, if that makes sense. It is a band of four characters that enjoy performing live, and that is the “rock n roll” in it all, I suppose. There is a primal creature within us that surfaces only while on stage, which is the magic of a concert.
I went the show of yours in Beijing. After the performance, you surprised all the audience with an encore. You've said Mork never does encores, yet this time you made an exception and performed “Da Himmelen Falt.” Backstage, as the crowd chanted “encore,” what did you guys discuss? Why did you decide to play “Da Himmelen Falt”?
MORK has never been a band who does encores just because it’s “expected”. Most “professional” bands do this. But for me it is more or less scripted, and not really anything special when done like that. If a crowd or a specific night has the right feel for it, then it is a cool and special thing to do. From the top of my mind I believe the previous encore we did was in Mexico City roughly three years ago. When the Chinese crowd was shouting for more music, we were still caught in the mindset of “we are actually in China for the first time and the crowd has given us a warm welcome”, so we decided to do it. So, we thank you Beijing!

In Yiwu, the joint performance by Mork and Thy Light had to be moved to a different venue at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. Fortunately, the show went off without a hitch in the end. Could you tell us about the situation at the time? When you first learned the show might be canceled, how did you all discuss about it? Did the final performance meet your expectations?
The whole ordeal about preparing for the visit to China was a lot of back and forth. And a shaky ride. The Chinese government is a really strict one it seems. The organizers and concert promoters have a hard time putting on shows. There are permits and stuff left and right that can be cleared or even canceled at the last moment. What makes this even more hectic is that we have to plan to book flights and do the expensive applying for working visas etc. So for a long time the Chinese dates was a “maybe”. But when the approved permits for the Beijing show was delivered we did all we could to make this happen. We ended up getting our visas literally over night. I have to give a huge shoutout to the good people at the Chinese embassy in Oslo for making this happen. It was costly, but we made it happen together. The second show in China was still struggling regarding the local permits etc, but it ended up being a show. It was perhaps in a different city and all that, but it happened, which is the important part. The show itself was great and we got to share the moment with the crowd in Yiwu.
Mork has long been known by a nickname among Chinese metal fans, roughly translated as “Baby Dark Throne”—because Chinese listeners feel your musical style closely resembles Dark Throne's. Both of you represent the purest expression of Norwegian black metal, hailing from Norway as some of the genre's most iconic acts (not to mention your band logos share visual similarities). Had you heard this nickname before? What are your thoughts on it?
MORK has been associated with Darkthrone, for sure. The earlier albums has a lot of inspiration from that band. To me the two most important BM bands from Norway (and in general) is Darkthrone and Burzum. Those two have given me the most atmosphere, feel and inspiration to do this on my own. However, I have made my own path and evolved MORK over the span of the albums and years. Nocturno Culto did do guest vocals on two albums too, which makes the circle complete. The one thing that I still have kept from the Darkthrone influence, which may show itself in newer songs here and there, is the groovy but rough riffs. What Burzum has given me is the more floating and dreamy, atmospheric parts.
Could you briefly introduce Mork's formation to your fans in China? Many Chinese listeners may not be familiar with the band's early history. When was Mork formed? What prompted you to start performing live?
MORK is and will always be a one-man-band. I initially started in the shadows back in 2004, when I was 20. I had just discovered Black Metal just a couple years prior to this. I was curious and wanted to try diving into this mindset and soundscape on my own. Like most I am sure it was the darkness and danger of it all which lured me in. Being an only-child and somewhat of an outsider, it was perfect for me. It has become an important part of my life and being. It was about ten years before I decided to release the first album, which I DIY. The album got some attention and that brought with it the first label and official release. At that point I figured I wanted to bring my music to the stage and that’s when I gathered a pack of friends to create the live band. The line-up has changed a bit over the years leaving only Alex Bruun and myself as the original members at present day. MORK went on from an underground label to sign with Peaceville Records and has been performing as a live-band globally, the rest is history.

Both MORK and your other project Udåd use Norwegian lyrics. Why did you choose to write all the lyrics exclusively in Norwegian?
This is actually something that I got from Burzum and a bit from Darkthrone. When I discovered their music I noticed that some songs were in Norwegian. At that time it was weird to me that an international recognised band could write in their native language. The fact that it was written in Norwegian also gave it all a more special feel and originality which resonated with me. I have now done all my albums in Norwegian. It is a Norwegian band and it is a very personal journey and experience to me, so it needs to be this way.
Speaking of Udåd, in 2024 you launched this black metal project named Udåd. You also handle all the music composition for Udåd. What was the original intention behind founding Udåd? Compared to Mork, what kind of sound do you hope Udåd conveys?
I think I started Udåd at the time of MORK album nr 6, perhaps. MORK has been evolving since the first album, which is extremely important to me. I do not wish to stagnate or just copy another previous album to be “safe”. So, obviously MORK was not a “nekro” BM band anymore even though I still carry some fondness for that type of sound and writing. So, I decided to create Udåd to be able to exercise that particular aspect of BM. It was actually a German cult movie called “Der Todesking” that influenced it all. It is a dark and very raw project which is recorded and presented in the way of lo-fi sound, which is “nekro”. With a bit of humour I like to say that MORK evolves and Udåd devolves.
This April, you'll be performing at the Inferno Festival. And you'll be headlining the main stage on the festival's final day. What are your expectations for the 2026 Inferno Festival?
This is MORK’s 4th appearance at the festival. The band has been climbing the billing position every time and now we are finally moved over to the main stage, which is great. It is an honour, of course. MORK has been working hard and has been growing for years and now it is natural. We appreciate that Inferno has treated us well over the years. It will be a special show this year, for several reasons which I can’t mention yet.

Following the Inferno Festival, Mork will embark on a packed European tour this October. In the meantime, do you have any other performances or creative projects lined up?
We do have several European festivals lined up and a Spanish tour in addition to the full European headliner tour. In just the coming weeks or even only days from now, we will be announcing something special .. stay tuned!
It's been about a decade since Mork's first performance. Over these ten years, you've grown into a renowned band performing at various international music festivals. Do you remember what Mork's first show was like? What do you think has been the biggest change for the band and yourself during this decade?
Yes, I will never forget the very first one. It was special, because it wasn’t in Norway, but rather in Poland. We performed at a small one day festival at a club in Olsztyn. Let’s just say that it was a “young and inexperienced” live band and I have also grown a decade since then. So, naturally everyone and everything grows, evolve and gain experience and skill over time. It was funny though, our first bassist played this show and messed up so much that he quit before leaving the stage that night. We laugh about that today and still remain friends. But it was quite funny and amateurish. Everything has to start somewhere, right?
Thomas, thank you once again for joining us for this interview. Mork was the first metal show I went this year, and it remains the most unforgettable performance so far. We're incredibly grateful you came to perform here, and we hope to see Mork perform in China again in the future!
The pleasure is all mine. I thank you for reaching out and maybe helping us obtain even more exposure in your fantastic country. It was a special bucket list moment for us and me personally to reach the Chinese border. We are already trying to figure out a return maybe next year. Hopefully the promoters are able to make it happen. MORK needs to explore more of the Chinese market and I personally wish to see more of your country. Spread the word and stay posted! We will see you again. Thank you and hails!
