Today's interview is with the Portuguese Black Metal band Culto Macabro, formed in 2015 by Melkor alone, before the formation of Black Blood Whoracle's Beyonder asked Culto Macabro / Bathurzum / Ultrasatan to release a Spilt album. Ultrasatan bands to release a Spilt album, with each band releasing two songs, which is why you see Culto Macabro forming and releasing a Spilt album, and after releasing this Spilt album Melkor decided to continue working on some new material for Culto Macabro, and thus In 2015 the demo album “Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada do Abismo” was released, a work full of darkness, cold, merciless, horrible atmosphere, as if entering an endless darkness, with keyboards that make the album even more eerie. The singer's vocals are as evil as the devil, and the slow drums create a dark atmosphere, an excellent Black Metal work. It was not until 2023 that the band released their first official album “Sagrado”, “Paganismo”, and recently Melkor, the founder of the band, got in touch with the magazine for an interview!

Hello once again. It's a pleasure to talk with you this time about my band Culto Macabro. The band was formed in 2015, following a challenge launched by Beyonder to three musicians. Each of us had to create two black metal songs, doing everything ourselves, vocals, drums, guitars, bass, everything. I completed my two tracks for that compilation, but even before the full compilation was released, I felt there was something more to explore. The darkness was calling. So I continued writing new material, and that creative momentum led to the birth of the first full-length album: Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo. That’s when Culto Macabro truly took shape.

This band is still your own band, which will be very convenient when creating songs because you can create songs according to your own ideas. Can you introduce your creative process?

Yes, Culto Macabro is still entirely my own project, which gives me full creative freedom. My process usually begins with a strong conceptual or lyrical theme rooted in blasphemy, paganism, or inner torment. I typically start by composing the instrumental base, building guitar riffs, adding bass, drums, and also integrating keyboards, which are essential for enhancing the dark and atmospheric depth of our sound. Once the instrumental structure is complete, I move on to vocals and production. For the first album, Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo, I wrote all the lyrics myself, expressing my own vision of spiritual downfall and satanic awakening. For the second album, Sagrado Paganismo, the lyrics were written by Neusa Pires, who added a powerful and disturbing poetic layer to the compositions. Having full control over all aspects allows Culto Macabro to remain a pure and uncompromising expression of darkness.

This band released two works during 2014-2015 and their first official album in 2023. Did you still complete these works in your own studio?

Yes, all the works related to Culto Macabro were completed in my own studio, Studios 13. Back in 2015, I released the first official album, Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo, which was entirely recorded, mixed, and mastered there. That same year, I also took part in a compilation that featured Culto Macabro alongside three other solo black metal projects. Each project contributed two tracks, and all my material, both for the album and the compilation, was created from start to finish at Studios 13. This setup gives me full creative freedom and the ability to shape the atmosphere exactly the way I envision it, without limitations.

Yes, Culto Macabro released its debut album Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo in 2015, and only in 2023 did the second album Sagrado Paganismo see the light of day. The long gap between albums was mainly due to my involvement in two other bands during that period, Neoplasmah and Martelo Negro. Both projects demanded a lot of my time, especially with rehearsals, live performances, and recording sessions. On top of that, I had my daily job to manage, which left little room for Culto Macabro. Still, the flame never died. Throughout the years, I kept collecting ideas, refining concepts, and exploring darker atmospheres. When the time finally felt right, I returned to Culto Macabro with a renewed vision, more mature, more intense, and with a stronger identity. The delay allowed me to channel all the experience I gained from the other projects into this new chapter.

The music theme of Culto Macabro is deeply rooted in black metal, focusing on dark, occult, and blasphemous subjects. The themes explore satanism, paganism, spiritual decay, and the rejection of conventional morality. Through our music, we aim to delve into forbidden realms, embracing the darkness and questioning societal norms. The lyrics are designed to provoke strong emotions, offering a glimpse into a world of torment, rebellion, and defiance against imposed purity. The reason I chose this theme for Culto Macabro is because it reflects my personal interests and philosophical views on the darker aspects of existence. Black metal allows me to express feelings of alienation, rebellion, and the rejection of mainstream beliefs. It's a genre that aligns perfectly with my desire to explore these themes in a raw and unfiltered way. For the first album, Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo, I wrote all the lyrics, which reflect my own inner struggles, the embrace of darkness, and the defiance of light. These lyrics are deeply personal, drawing from my experiences and my exploration of dark philosophies. For the second album, Sagrado Paganismo, the lyrics were written by Neusa Pires. She continued the themes I started, focusing on rebellion, sin, and the lust for forbidden power. The inspiration for these lyrics comes from a mix of personal reflections, the study of occult and satanic ideologies, and the influence of dark literature and philosophy. The goal is to create an atmosphere that immerses the listener into the world of black metal, challenging them to confront their own beliefs and the darkness within themselves.

The album from 2014 was initially released through my own label in a digital format, but later it was also made available in cassette format through Satanhades Productions. This label has been a great partner for Culto Macabro, and their support in releasing the cassette edition was invaluable. Satanhades Productions has always done an excellent job, from the packaging to the promotion, ensuring the album reached the hands of those who truly appreciate the underground scene. The cassette release, in particular, was limited and has become a collector's item, something rare that only a few people have had the privilege to own. I am more than satisfied with the work they did, as they have always been professional and dedicated to preserving the essence of the black metal underground. Their attention to detail in both the production and distribution has played a significant role in spreading the band's name to a wider audience. I consider Satanhades Productions to be a reliable and influential partner in the black metal community, and I look forward to collaborating with them again in the future.

The logo design for Culto Macabro was created entirely by me. I wanted something that would perfectly capture the essence of the band's dark and sinister themes, so I took on the challenge myself. The logo reflects the chaotic and macabre energy that flows through the band's music. As for the album artwork, I also designed both covers myself. I chose to work with a black-and-white palette for both albums, as I felt it added a raw, grim atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the black metal aesthetic. The lack of color intensifies the dark themes and enhances the sense of desolation and haunting that Culto Macabro aims to evoke. For both Anjo Demente: A Eterna Jornada ao Abysmo and Sagrado Paganismo, the artwork is meant to be unsettling, emphasizing the darker and more twisted elements of the band's themes. Every detail was carefully crafted to match the intensity of the music, creating a visual experience that is as stark and ominous as the sound itself.

The cold, dark, and terrifying atmosphere highlights your understanding of black metal, the slow and heavy Riff, but the speed is still very fast in some details. The drummer's performance is very stable and has also contributed to the atmosphere of this album. Your singing is like a demon. What do you think of your own work?

I'm pleased with the work I've done on Culto Macabro and the way the band's music turned out. I did the best I could with the knowledge and skills I had at the time, constantly pushing myself to create something that truly captured the essence of black metal. The combination of slow, heavy riffs with faster, more intense moments was a deliberate choice to maintain a dynamic and unpredictable flow throughout the albums. It mirrors the chaotic and brutal nature of the themes we explore. Although the drums in the band are programmed rather than performed live, the programming was designed with great care to maintain a sense of stability and intensity. The rhythm sections really help shape the cold, dark atmosphere that defines Culto Macabro, adding that unsettling, percussive energy, which is a crucial part of the black metal sound. The programmed drums were intended to be as organic as possible, complementing the guitars and vocals in creating a relentless atmosphere. As for my vocals, I really aimed to create a demonic and raw energy in my delivery. I wanted to make sure the vocals carried the weight of the dark themes and the sinister atmosphere. It’s not just about screaming for the sake of aggression, but about conveying a sense of dread and malevolence that resonates with the listener. All in all, I'm satisfied with the final result, knowing that I pushed myself to create something that felt authentic and true to the black metal genre.

V: 乐队今年有什么新作品吗？能和大家分享一些信息吗？

Does this band have any new work to do this year? Can you share some information with everyone?

Yes, Culto Macabro has new work coming this year. The third album is already recorded and is currently in the hands of a Portuguese label, which I’ll reveal in due time. The sound continues in the same black metal vein, but with better recording techniques and improved performance, while still maintaining that raw and brutal sound that defines Culto Macabro. Fans can expect a darker and more intense atmosphere, but with a refined execution that reflects the growth and evolution of the band. In addition to that, I already have the fourth album ready, which I plan to release at a later date. The new material keeps the spirit of the previous works, but with some new elements and twists that will surprise and challenge our listeners. It’s exciting to see the progress and how each album brings something fresh to the table while staying true to the essence of what Culto Macabro is all about.
