21 min read

Today, we are featuring an interview with Hyperion, a melodic black/death metal band from Sweden. Formed in 2007, Hyperion is a seasoned act with deep roots in the Swedish scene. Following the release of their 2010 demo, the band garnered significant attention from Swedish fans and high praise from music critics. Swedish bands have long been renowned for their melodic sensibilities, and Hyperion has masterfully captured the very essence of this tradition. Their music has a way of winning you over within just a few minutes; they skillfully weave death metal elements into a fierce, impassioned melodic black metal framework. Notably, their debut album featured four guitarists—yet, far from sounding chaotic, the music is remarkably well-layered and leaves a lasting impression. The drumming serves as a driving force for the band’s musical direction, while the vocalist demonstrates precise command over both black metal and death metal vocal styles. From every perspective, Hyperion’s immense talent is undeniable. This year, the band released their latest work, *Elysia*—their second full-length album, arriving a decade after their debut. It is, once again, a truly spectacular release. To mark the arrival of this new record, the members of Hyperion connected with our magazine for an exclusive interview!

采访对象:Erik / Joel(Hyperion乐队吉他手)

Hello, brother! It’s a pleasure to meet you, and thank you so much for taking part in this interview. I believe this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine—would you like to start by saying hello to all your Chinese fans? Hyperion was formed in 2007, making it a long-standing, veteran band; how did the band first come together?

Hi, thanks for having us! It is indeed! I did some digging to find some Chinese media and found your magazine at last. Our very first email subscriber, who subscribed back when we launched the newsletter in 2018, is actually Chinese, so I'd like to extend my greetings to you and any other fans over there. Another fun fact is that we were offered to be in the Metal Musician Calendar in China back in 2018, probably by the same person. I know the larger cities do have a thriving metal scene, but we have different social media and so on, so it'd be great to reach into the Chinese sphere more.

Thank you! Hyperion was formed in 2007 as a pretty standard Melodic Death Metal band of the time, at least in terms of our influences. The emphasis was on creating Melodic Death Metal, not the trendy Metalcore / Deathcore music that was very popular at that time. We were 4 young guys that started pretty much like any other young band: Playing covers our favourite bands and graduallymoved towards composing original material. The first demo recordings we did never got officially released, well except for being uploaded on Myspace. In 2010 we released the Blood of the Ancients demo, where we started incorporating a lot of classical Black and Death Metal into our sound, along with some other influences. It is at this point in time were the Hyperion of today started to take shape. 2 albums, or well, almost 2 albums later (Elysia is just about to be released) and the musical journey continues with new influences, more experience and an unyielding focus on quality. Even in our inception, there was always a heavy emphasis on producing the absolute best music possible. This mentality has stayed with us and is very much prevalent to this day.

Currently, Erik is the only remaining member from the original lineup; all other members have since been replaced. Why did the original members leave the band? How did the new members join? Are you satisfied with their work? And what new changes have they brought to the band?

Blood of the Ancients"Demo的作品。

Well, the original line-up just kind of fell apart. First Anders left, then I fired Agge (although he came back for a brief period), then our lead vocalist Erik left for no particular reason that I can remember. Everyone told me to just join another band and move on, but I didn't listen. I wanted to create something new, something more epic, intense and even more melodic. Over the next year, I joined forces with Micke and together we composed what would later become the Blood of the Ancients demo. Efe and Harry joined shortly thereafter and of course David, or Davve Crew as I call him. Micke, Efe and myself spent a lot of time polishing and refining what would ultimately become our debut album Seraphical Euphony. Harry wrote 1 lyric as well, the lyrics for Moral Evasion. Members have come and gone over the years and most have contributed in their own very unique way, except the ones that were only in the band for a very short time. Considering the band has been around for almost 20 years at this point, it's not that big of a surprise. People change, get different priorities, or sometimes it just doesn't work out. The line-up on Elysia, however is almost identical to Seraphical's, except that instead of Efe, Joel is the third axeman. The only I guess you could say new member we have now is Tiamat. He has not participated on any recordings yet, but the story behind him joining the band is basically that Joel went full autism mode as with everything he does. He scoured the internet for a suitable new candidate when it became clear that Harry was no longer going to be a part of Hyperion. He found Tiamat, the guy flew down to Stockholm, jammed with us and we were all very impressed with his vocals, so here we are.

Both of your band’s albums feature excellent production quality. Which studio did you record them in, and who served as the producer? How has the recording process for the new album been going?

Thanks! Both were recorded by Sverker Widgren in Wing Studios, though we recorded the raw guitar signals at home this time, and then he reamped them - that is, we captured the raw signal, and then he played that signal through the amps and recorded the output. This is a very flexible and cost-saving method for sure. Drums and bass were recorded in the studio though. The guitars were a long process and took many months of recording for a few hours per day because we have an absolutely massive amount of guitars in our songs, and we knew we needed a clean performance with so many guitars or they would be indistinguishable in the mix. Vocals were recorded in our friend's studio he had set up in Dalarna and also at home.

The orchestrations were mostly programmed by Anders / Mauritz, our old drummer. He did a phenomenal job with that in my opinion. All the pads and synthesizers were programmed by me and I also added some additional dungeon synth-like orchestrations on The Primordial Wellspring. We also recorded various guest vocals at Joel's place and we added some sound effects ourselves using plugins and libraries. The recording, mixing and mastering of this album was an arduous process and for me personally, the most demanding project I have ever been a part of, but well worth it. We all spent so much time perfecting every little tiny detail and I think you can hear that on the album. Also, credit where credit is due: Elysia would not sound even remotely as mighty and grand without the back-breaking dedication and patience of Sverker.

All of you are musicians with extensive creative experience, and every one of your releases demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship; it’s clear that a great deal of heart and effort goes into the creation of each song. Could you share a bit about your creative background? And how has the process of working on your new album been going?

I've been playing various instruments since I was 7 or something, with piano etc. as well, it's a thing in Sweden with heavily subsidized or even free musical education for children. I picked up the guitar a few years later and then drums as well, though I never took any drum classes - I just got a drum kit at home and went at it for fun. I've been practicing for one hour per day from maybe 13 years old, covering Megadeth and Necrophagist and stuff on YouTube under the name SwedishBerzerker. Then I delved into web design when I was probably 12 or something, and 3D modeling as well. Always liked to do projects like that! For this album, we've been sending Guitar Pro files around to each other and meeting up regularly to discuss and work on things more in-depth for many years before we ended up with these songs.

Erik: I started playing guitar when I was 13, but I didn't take it seriously until I was about 17. My way of learning the instrument was just absorbing as many songs as I possibly could and learning every single riff, song, melody, or picking section that I came across. As for writing lyrics, I usually just listen to what story the music wants to tell and then the concept, or subject matter falls into place naturally, followed of course by a lot of late evenings with green tea, fantasy, science-fiction and various ambient music while doing research. Then I just let the words flow.

Your band’s first album was released through Black Lion Records—an excellent label—in your home country. For your new album, however, you’ve chosen to work with the American label Willowtip Records. Why did you decide to go with Willowtip Records instead of continuing your partnership with Black Lion Records?

We had a good run with Black Lion, and Oliver there was incredibly passionate in his promotion of Seraphical Euphony. We were, after all, one of his first bands. But now, we definitely felt that we wanted to move on and try something new. Willowtip has a great history and roster with some great bands in the more technical and progressive vein, and it felt like a natural choice for us.

"Occult" and "legends" are the central themes of your band’s music. Why did you choose these themes, and what do you aim to express through them? You also write your own lyrics—who is responsible for writing them, and where does the inspiration come from?

I'm guessing you got that from our Metal Archives profile. That is partially true. We don't have many occult references in our lyrics, as we are not a Black Metal band. They do exist, but we consciously stay away from satanic, or devil worshipping lyrics. If you are going to write about such topics, you had better take it seriously. Legends, yes, but our lyrics are very varied, even if they have a common...feel to them. Mythology, has had a profound impact on our lyrics especially Greek Mythology. With Elysia, we also have some science-fiction lyrics with Fides Novem, philosophical thought provoking lyrics that tackle some deep subject matters through an abstract and indirect point of view, some fantasy, history and lots and lots of other stuff. For me, everything that is not rooted in reality as we know it is an inspiration for writing lyrics. Music is an escape for me and our lyrics aren't really meant to make you think too much about what is going on in life, rather carry you away to a different plain of existence. Fantasy, science-fiction, mythology, pc games, religion...there are so many sources to draw inspiration from, but basically anything that is outside the norm of what normal modern life is all about. The lyrics have been written by me and Anders, with a few exceptions / edits from other members.

Your band went quiet after releasing its first album in 2016, and it wasn’t until this year that you released your second full-length album. What was the reason for this long period of silence?

The songs were finished many years ago. The recording, post-production and artworks really took their time, and also finding a label.

Indeed, there were a lot of ambitious and time-consuming projects going in the background as Joel said. We felt it best to not share too much on social media until we actually had

something tangible to show. Better to let the results speak for themselves.

First of all, congratulations on the release of your band’s second full-length album this year—your first new material in a decade. Your music is characterized by rich melodies and full-bodied harmonies, whilesimultaneously possessing a sense of brutality and an epic quality. Although you have only released two albums, both are truly exceptional and have been highly acclaimed by fans and music critics alike. What are your own thoughts on your work? And how does this new album compare to your previous one—what has changed?

I'd say this one has more layers and has more guitars in it for sure, and is perhaps a bit more coherent. I feel like it's kind of a natural evolution from the debut, with the same atmosphere and emotion, but taken up a notch. I'd say we've found our sound.

Erik: Elysia is like Seraphical, but times 5, or times 10. It has more of everything. We went in a slightly more technical and progressive direction than on Seraphical, but haven't turned into Necrophagist, or Opeth. We are still Hyperion, just with some new influences added to the melting pot. I would also say that our influences were at times very obvious on Seraphical. It ties into what Joel said - we all feel that Elysia is a big step forward in terms of originality. Not to say that Seraphical was unoriginal, just, this album is more refined and developed in that regard. Lyrically, a lot of focus was put on making them clearer without sacrificing the poetic edge. As for our work overall, I would say that we are a band that puts major emphasis on the quality of our work. Every band on the planet would say the same thing were you to ask them, but I doubt that many of them have the patience to work through their material as thoroughly as we do.

As a long-established band, you have performed at numerous music festivals. Which ones have left a lasting impression on you, and could you describe the atmosphere at those events? Also, which music festivals do

you plan to perform at in 2027?

House of Metal was the first big one, and we had such a great reception there. Things like them helping us unload our stuff stood out to me. It was pretty wild to eat buffet with some huge names like Mikael Stanne sitting at a table next to you. I think that's the only proper festival thus far. Apart from that, supporting Batushka, who at least me and Erik are huge fans of, was incredible and probably our biggest audience so far. Those gigs in Bambi Galore in Hamburg, which was a Viking/folk metal kind of night with hundreds of people in the crowd, and 4Rooms in Leipzig, which I remember as a lot darker venue where you could barely see the audience, were big ones as well, and Helsinki in Finland. There was supposed to be one in Lahti in Finland that just never happened because of the pandemic. We have nothing officially confirmed for 2027 yet, but we have one potentially being revealed soon!

The Batushka shows and House of Metal were true highlights, indeed. I remember my fingers were shaking when we opened up for Batushka in Riga. I had never played in front of so many people, but as the show went on I gradually became more comfortable. For me, the release gig for Seraphical stood out because of the fact that it was such a big crowd, well compared to what we had previously anyway and people were really into the music. The crowd knew the song-titles even sang along with the lyrics. That was bizarre for me as prior to that, we were an extremely unknown demo-band with at the most a couple of dozen people really digging our music. It was a true milestone and it was at that moment I realised

that this band is going to go a lot further than what I had previously even dared to conceive.

What other new projects does your band have lined up for 2027?

We're going to try something new that we haven't done before, so stay tuned for that. Otherwise we're hoping people are interested in having us play again!

You are an excellent band, and I will continue to follow and support you. I also hope that this interview will help more Chinese fans discover and support your music. As we wrap up, is there anything you would like to say to your fans in China?

Thank you, it's been an interesting interview with some good questions. Thanks to all of you who decide to check out our music! China is a massive and fascinating country that almost feels like another planet, and it'd be really cool to tour there one day.

Greatest appreciation for giving us the opportunity to do this interview. Your support will not be forgotten!
