Hailing from Siberia, Russia, Smerdead boasts its one‑of‑a‑kind musical style and has drawn fans from all over the world. Formed back in 2018, the band has built a distinct sound different from conventional metal with localized Slavic folklore and dark, eerie narrative storytelling. Following the release of their latest full‑length album, Volcano Magazine reached out to the band for an exclusive interview

V: Smerdead这个名字背后的故事是什么？当初组建乐队时，你们是如何确定这个名称的？

What is the story behind the band name Smerdead? How did you settle on this name when the band was formed?

K: 大家好！当时我们已经准备好了第一张专辑的素材，急需想个名字，好发行首批单曲。我们想了好几个英文名字，但都感觉太俗套了。我们想要个特别的，最好是个朗朗上口的自造词。于是，我们用几个俄语和英语单词拼凑出了这个名字：smerd（俄语中指农民的古词）、smerdet（臭）、smert（死亡）和dead。最后，SMERDEAD听起来还不错，哈哈。

Greetings! At that point, we already had material ready for our first album, and we urgently needed to come up with a name so we could release the first singles under it. Several English-language options were proposed, but they all felt clichéd. We wanted something unusual, maybe a catchy made-up word. So we pieced the name together from several Russian and English words: smerd (an old Russian term for a peasant), smerdet (to stink), smert (death), and dead. In the end, SMERDEAD sounds pretty good, haha.

V: 乐队2018年在西伯利亚组建，你们给自己的音乐打上了“僵尸金属”的标签。对于俄罗斯以外的金属乐迷，你们会如何解释这个自创风格？是什么使你们创建这个音乐风格的？

The band was formed in Siberia back in 2018, and you label your music as “Zombie Metal”. How would you explain this self‑created style to metal fans outside Russia, and what drove you to create this musical style?

K: 很简单：歌词和画面的主题就是这么选的，我想，既然有海盗金属、维京金属和其他类似的衍生流派，主要通过歌词和画面来表达，那为什么不能有僵尸金属呢？在网上，我们经常被贴上死亡金属、旋律死亡金属、鞭击金属等等的标签，但我们把自己定义为恐怖金属和僵尸金属。

It's very simple: the theme of the lyrics and imagery was chosen exactly as such, and I thought, if there's Pirate Metal, Viking Metal, and other similar offshoots, mostly expressed through lyrics and imagery, then why can't there be Zombie Metal? Online, we periodically get tagged with styles like Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Thrash Metal, and others, but we characterize ourselves as Horror Metal and Zombie Metal.

V: 你们受哪些乐队的影响更多？你们在日常生活中会听哪些风格的音乐？

Which bands have influenced you the most? What styles of music do you listen to in your daily life?

K: 我听过很多不同时期的重金属音乐。年轻的时候，我最喜欢的是Dimmu Borgir、Rammstein、Metallica，还有俄罗斯摇滚乐队Sektor Gaza和Korol i Shut。我很喜欢俄罗斯异教金属（比如Butterfly Temple和Severnye Vorota）。后来我渐渐不再听这些，开始更多地听Amon Amarth、Rotting Christ、Insomnium、In Flames和Dark Tranquillity。在俄罗斯重金属圈里，我很喜欢Grobovaya Doska。具体是什么影响了我？我也不知道，大概各种因素都有吧！

I've listened to a lot of heavy music at different times. In my early youth, my favorites were Dimmu Borgir, Rammstein, Metallica, and the Russian rock bands Sektor Gaza and Korol i Shut. I loved Russian Pagan Metal (Butterfly Temple, Severnye Vorota). Later I moved away from that and started listening more to Amon Amarth, Rotting Christ, Insomnium, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity. From the Russian heavy scene, I like listening to Grobovaya Doska. What specifically influenced me? I don't know, probably a little bit of everything!

V: 西伯利亚是乐队的故土，当地的风貌、民间传说、古老神话，有没有给歌曲的创作与主题带来灵感，可以分享一下吗？

Siberia is your homeland. Has the local landscape, folklore and ancient myths inspired your songwriting and lyrical themes? Could you share some examples?

K: 歌词由他人创作，很难说他们的灵感源自何处。但我们的风景确实令人叹为观止——这里有广阔的漫游之地。泰加林、森林、河流、湖泊——所有这些都令人心旷神怡。

Other people are responsible for the lyrics. It's hard to say where they draw inspiration from. But our landscapes are indeed impressive—there's plenty of room to roam. Taiga, forests, rivers, lakes—all of that is inspiring.

V: 从早期 Vo T'me Lesov、EP Zloveshchie Istorii、全长 Myortvyy Les 到新作 Night of All Saints，在编曲与氛围营造上，你们做出过哪些调整？有没有哪些音乐元素是从早期一直保留至今的？

Looking back over your discography from early Vo T'me Lesov, EP Zloveshchie Istorii, full‑length Myortvyy Les to the new release Night of All Saints, what adjustments have you made in arrangement and atmosphere‑building? Are there any musical elements you have kept since the early days?

K: 我包揽了过去所有专辑的大部分音乐创作，其中很大一部分作品都创作于乐队成立的头两三年。我们之前的吉他手Alexey Kolenchenko（Smerd乐队成员）曾协助我进行编曲，并创作了几首曲目。在新专辑中，另一位吉他手 Ivan Lebedev 也加入了创作行列——他参与了五首曲目的创作。但我认为，所有这些作品都保持了 Smerdead 一贯的风格，如果事先不知道，很难分辨出每首歌的作者是谁。我相信我们始终坚持着最初的创作理念。听过我们音乐的人都说我们的风格辨识度很高。或许只有专辑"Zloveshchie Istorii"在音乐上略有不同——在我看来，它的旋律性稍逊一筹。

I wrote most of the music for all past releases, and a large portion of the material was written in the first two or three years of the band's existence. Our former guitarist Alexey Kolenchenko (Smerd) helped me with arrangements and wrote a few tracks. On the new album, our other guitarist Ivan Lebedev joined in as a songwriter—he has five tracks on the new album. But all of them, in my opinion, are kept within the Smerdead stylistic framework, and I think it would be hard to tell who wrote which track without knowing in advance. I believe we continue to do exactly what we started with. People who listen to us say our style is fairly recognizable. Perhaps only the album Zloveshchie Istorii was a bit different musically—less melodic, it seems to me.

V: 你们几乎每张唱片都由一个个独立恐怖故事构成，把一整张专辑当作一本黑暗故事集来创作，这个创作理念是从什么时候确定下来的？

Almost every one of your releases consists of separate horror‑themed stories, treating a full‑length album like a collection of dark tales. When did you decide on this creative concept?

K: 这个想法很快就出现了。我们希望每一首歌都能讲述一个故事，让听众能够完全沉浸在我们的故事中，感受它们，就像读书或看电影一样。

The idea came right away. We want every song to be a story. So that the listener can fully immerse themselves in our tales, feel them, like reading a book or watching a movie.

V: Night of All Saints是你们全新的全长专辑，Yuri Shumbasov绘制了冲击力很强的专辑封面，可以聊聊乐队和画师沟通的全过程吗？你们希望这张封面，向听众传递哪些核心意象？有没有哪几首作品对于成员个人来说格外特别？

Night of All Saints is your brand‑new full‑length record. Yuri Shumbasov made the striking cover artwork. Could you talk about the whole communication process between the band and the artist? What core ideas do you want this cover to deliver to listeners? Are there any tracks that are personally special to each band member?

K: 这位艺术家出色地完成了任务。封面概念是我自己构思的，但由于我缺乏绘画技巧，所以我用人工智能绘制了几张草图来形象地展现我的想法。之后，Yuri 用他独特的风格从零开始创作了封面。传达主打歌和整张专辑的氛围至关重要。这并非 Yuri 第一次与我们合作。我们一直关注着他在网上的作品，并一直渴望与他合作。

The artist did an excellent job with the tasks. I came up with the concept for the cover myself, but since I don't have artistic skills, I made several sketches using AI to visually show what I wanted. Then Yuri created the cover from scratch in his unique style. It was important to convey the mood of the title track and the entire album. This isn't Yuri's first work with us. We'd been following his work online for a long time and wanted to collaborate with him.

V: 俄乌战争有没有对乐队造成某些方面上的影响？乐队演出是否还可以正常进行？

Has the Russia‑Ukraine war affected the band in any way? Are you still able to play live shows normally?

K: 这完全没有影响我们的创作！如果你问的是演出禁令，答案是肯定的，我们并没有禁止演出。我们的音乐不涉及政治。我们创作并表演关于各种邪灵的奇幻恐怖故事，不涉及任何社会热点话题或世界政治。

It hasn't affected our creativity at all! There are no bans on concerts, if that's what you're asking. Our music is apolitical. We write and perform fantasy horror stories about all kinds of evil spirits, and we don't touch on highly social topics or world politics.

V: 日常生活中你们会喜欢僵尸风格的影视作品吗？你们对中国的僵尸片感兴趣吗？

Do you enjoy zombie‑themed films in your spare time? Are you interested in Chinese zombie movies?

K: 当然！丧尸片是我最喜欢的恐怖类型！我从没看过中国丧尸片——我甚至都不知道有这种电影。在中国电影里，我只看过武侠片和战争片。

Of course! It's my favorite horror genre! I've never watched Chinese zombie movies—I didn't even know they existed. From Chinese cinema, I've only seen martial arts films and war movies.

V: 下一步你们的创作路线是什么？会有新的恐怖题材成为主题吗？

What direction will your future songwriting take? Are there any new horror themes you plan to explore?

K: 我觉得时间会证明一切！我们已经为未来的专辑创作了一些音乐小样，甚至还有一首以僵尸为主题的歌曲几乎已经完成。也许明年它会作为单曲发行，但这还不能确定！

I think time will tell! There are already a few musical sketches for a future album and even one almost-finished track on a zombie theme. Maybe it'll come out as a single next year, but that's not certain!

V: 俄罗斯近几年来，地下金属氛围如何？乐队演出数量多吗？

How would you describe the underground metal scene in Russia in recent years? Do local bands get many opportunities to perform live?

K: 这个问题我很难回答！我不可能什么都关注，只关注我自己常听的一些乐队。在我看来，这种音乐在俄罗斯并不流行。但我认为每个地区都会定期举办一些本地的地下音乐会，就像我们的家乡鄂木斯克一样。不过，长途跋涉去其他城市演出成本很高。因为在我看来，来自俄罗斯人口较多的欧洲地区的乐队越来越倾向于在莫斯科和圣彼得堡演出，有时还会组织一些小型巡演，去到附近的城市，甚至远至乌拉尔山脉。但在乌拉尔山脉以西的西伯利亚，主要城市之间的距离相当远。例如，距离鄂木斯克最近的城市是新西伯利亚，也有700公里，而车里雅宾斯克或叶卡捷琳堡则在900到1000公里之间。路途本身就很昂贵，而且俱乐部和酒吧对黄金时段的演出场地租金也相当高昂。据我了解，翻唱乐队现在在俄罗斯很流行。如果你不翻唱流行歌曲，而是演奏比如死亡金属之类的音乐，那么你可能很难找到合适的时间和地点举办演出。例如，在鄂木斯克这样的城市，这样的演出场地就很少——只有寥寥几个。莫斯科和圣彼得堡的情况可能要好一些，其他一些大城市或许也不错——我不能肯定。但无论如何，每个人都有机会演出！

It's hard for me to answer this question! I don't follow everything, only some of the bands I listen to myself. In my opinion, such music isn't very popular in Russia. But I think every region periodically hosts local underground concerts. As they do in our hometown of Omsk. But covering long distances to perform in other cities is quite expensive. Because, as I see it, bands from the more populated European part of Russia increasingly prefer to play in Moscow and St. Petersburg, sometimes organizing mini-tours to other nearby cities up to the Urals. But here, beyond the Urals in Siberia, major cities are quite far apart. For example, the nearest city from Omsk is Novosibirsk, which is 700 km away, while Chelyabinsk or Yekaterinburg are about 900–1000 km away. The trip itself is costly, plus clubs and bars ask for fairly large sums for renting prime-time slots for concerts. Cover bands are popular in Russia right now, as I understand it, and if you don't play covers of popular songs but play, say, Death Metal, then you'll likely find it hard to organize a concert at a convenient time and place. And there aren't many such venues in Omsk, for example—just a handful. Most likely, things are better in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and maybe in some other large cities—I can't say for sure. But everyone still has the opportunity to perform!
