Today we're interviewing Psycho Symphony, a highly experienced and accomplished veteran band from Romania. Formed in 1992, Psycho Symphony is a representative band of the first wave of Romanian metal. Initially, the Gindele brothers formed the band, later joined by members like Mogyorós Attila. In 1993, Emil Gherasim joined as a vocalist, completing the lineup, which they have maintained ever since. From 1994 to 1996, the band released three demo albums. In 1997, their first full-length album, "Silent Fall," was released by the band themselves on cassette, receiving high acclaim. Their 2002 EP, "Schizoid," also garnered significant recognition. Since then, the band has not released any new material. Although they haven't released any new work recently, their excellent tracks haven't been forgotten. This year, the excellent Italian label Rude Awakening Records re-released their "Silent Fall" album. The album "Fall" allowed fans in many other countries to rediscover this excellent band. To coincide with its release, the magazine, with the assistance of Rude Awakening Records, contacted the band's guitarist, Mogyorós Attila, for an exclusive interview!

Hello brother, it's nice to meet you and I'm very grateful that you could participate in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, I would like to say hello to all the Chinese fans. Psycho Symphony was formed in 1992 and is a long-established band. How did you form this band in the first place?
Im Mogyorós Attila (guitar) and I want to thank you very much for the opportunity to make this interview! Yes, it is for the first time to be in a fanzine from China! It's a great honor and it’s a very special and good feeling that somebody from so far away is interested in our band and music. The idea to make a band was coming from the Gindele brothers (Gindele Robert on bass and Gindele Gábor on drums) to whom I joined in 1992. When I met them, we became friends early on, and started to spent time together. I even joined them from time to time to some rehearsals but only as a spectator. I liked very much what they were playing, even that it was only bass and drums, but even in that early stages of the songs you could already tell that this was a special music. Theoretically they had a guitarist from a different town, but he never got to come to a single rehearsal, at least I didn’t saw him even once, and it looked like he was interested in doing something else than making music. After a little time, the brothers in our way to a rehearsal asked me if I wanted to join them as the guitarist. I was at the beginning of my guitar learning period, I think I was playing the instrument only since a half a year or so, but I was super happy and excited to join them and to say “YES”. In the beginning we were active only as a trio and we played only instrumental since we didn't have a singer. We were concentrating to have as many live shows as possible and we were mostly focusing in writing new songs, that's how it started.
Your band maintained the original lineup, except for a new member, Emil Gherasim, in 1993. Why did the first singer leave the band? How did Emil Gherasim join the band, and what new changes did his addition bring?
When we started the band, we realized that we wanted to make the sound richer-fuller and for this we knew that we needed one more guitarist and a singer too, to expand the musical boundaries. In the beginning for a short period of time we tried other musicians to recruit in the band, but they didn't fit in our concept of making music. We didn't have too much luck in this, cause none of them were the optimal guys we needed. Unfortunately some of them were good guys but not so good musicians, the others were good musicians but not so good guys. But, in the fall of 1993, we found the right guy in the person of Gherasim Emil on guitar. Our vocalist Szakacs Zoltán left the band because he lived in another town and it was hard for him to be there for the rehearsals, and beside this, he also was thinking to stop making music; he wanted to follow other ways in life, and not a musical way, like us. After this, Emil decided to try to fill in the vocals too, and we liked how it sounded so we went this way. And yes, since then we were in the same lineup. With his addition to the band, the songs and our sound got a new dimension, a new color let's say because new harmonies arrived and we enjoyed very much to explore all the possibilities we had with the composition of two guitars.
You are a group of musicians with rich creative experience. You have created classic works such as "Silent Fall" and "Schizoid". Could you please introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will inspire many more young musicians!
I think the most important part in this was the fact that all of us contributed equally to the music making process. We put and combined all of our ideas, and in this way we reached to create something very interesting and unique sounding. It was also very important to us, that everybody to be involved in the creation of the songs, and to have in our songs only parts that each of us is happy with. If a guitar, bass, vocal or drum part didn't meet that criteria, we took it off. The other very important fact was that we respected each other choices and tastes regarding music 100%. It's worth mentioning that in this music creation process everyone of us had the "VETO" right. It means, that we never left anything in the songs we weren't 100% happy with. To be creative and to respect the others: I think this is the best way to keep a band happy and to be able to work together in a long term. After Emil joined the band we felt that we could do finally what we always wanted, cause finally we had a formula where all the four of us were thinking in the same way about the music making and we were eager to make original and unique music too. So everything was perfect and very joyful and easy to work in this formula. We spent a lot of time and energy to create this music we enjoyed so much. In this lineup it was so easy ‘cause we all had the same idea and direction, we could make in this way all the crazy stuff we had in mind. That was what we were searching for all the time, and on this formula all came true.
Your work was considered top-notch for its time. Which studio did you record the album in? Which producer produced it for you? Do you remember the recording process? I believe it was a beautiful and unforgettable experience!
We felt from the beginning that what we did, is somehow unique, or at least we hoped it. We knew that is not a commercial music and that it would have very little audience interested in it. But we liked so much what we played that we never wanted to change the style. So, with this in mind, it was very surprising to us that we had such a success. We didn't expect it at all. For example we won all the five talent contest festivals we participated in. Our drummer won two times the best drummer award and I won the best guitarist award once. It was unbelievable. At the last festival we participated, we won with the 1st prize an extra award: a record label deal for a split album. In the end after a lot of discussions with the label, we decided to not sign with them, and our then band manager found a newly formed record label, and we signed with them. The experience in the studio was very interesting for us. At that time we recorded the album Silent Fall, we spent two weeks in the studio. And yes, we enjoyed the recording process, and we also struggled a lot to make everything sound as good as possible. But the equipment and specially the knowledge of the sound engineer was not what we expected. I know now that the result could have been better, but at that time it was the maximum we could do about it.
Your band hasn't released any new music since 2002. What's the reason for this? Do you have any plans to release a new album in 2026? Are you currently working on any new songs?
Yes, unfortunately our last record was released in 2002. It's so sad that we couldn't manage to record a new album. We had all the new songs for a new album and decided to make that album, but in the end we never reached that goal. Even that last EP was recorded in very poor conditions in our rehearsal room, because prior to this EP, we always strived to make new demos and record them in good quality, but we had so many disappointments after the studio sessions, regarding the results we got after it, that we had enough with the recording studios. And because we felt that we could do it on our own way, we decided to do it so. But because of this, we always delayed the recording procedure. Like I said we had enough new songs for a new album, but somehow over time our priorities changed in our everyday life, thus we got further and further away to record them. It's understandable. Some of us didn't had the time for the band because of the family and job, other have moved to a different town to make his own project, and so on. Beside that, the music taste also changed in time, and we realized that we couldn't work together as well as before. So we had to accept that, and let it go. We had a 20th Years Anniversary tour in 2012-2013 here in Romania as last activities, and after that we kinda stopped the band rehearsals and live shows too, because not all of us were happy with these appearances anymore. Sadly, since then we are not active anymore. But like I said it's really sad that we couldn't record those new songs, but it is what it is, with a bitter taste in mouth but we had to accept it.
Dreams, Illusion, Insanity, these are the themes of your band's music. Why did you choose these themes? What do you want to express through them? You also wrote the lyrics. Who wrote these lyrics, and what inspired them?
It's very interesting because from the very first start, this music style came completely natural to all of us. So naturally that we didn't had to change it not even a bit to match the others tastes too. We all liked it! We always wanted to create a unique music, something that others didn't do before. We tried to avoid all the cliché parts we heard everywhere in other bands’ music. We wanted our music to be expressive, to be interesting, to be complex, to be emotional, brutal and also gentle. To show all the feelings we had in ourselves. We didn't care about the commercial aspect or the fame. I think the fact that all of us contributed equally to the sound of the songs, made this music how it is. The base of the songs usually came from one of us, and after it we all put our creative parts into the songs, and the mixture of all the brains is what we hear on the recordings. We had a perfect combination of everything we liked. Also the same is true for the lyrics. We painted thru texts a surrealistic interpretation of the emotions and feelings we had in ourselves. We liked to see also how others can interpret and imagine different meanings of the same texts, lyrics. The base of the lyrics were brought either by Emil or by me, but the result is also a result of common creation. And i think it’s very good that the non-traditional music fetches really well with non-traditional lyrics too.
Your logo design is very simple, yet it reveals a complex design form within its simplicity. Who designed this logo for you? Your album artwork is also very unique. Who designed these album artworks for you?
You are very nice, and thank you very much for saying that! It was me who designed the logo. It was a passion of mine long before the band to try to draw and came up with logo ideas. So I was super happy when we made the band and we decided that we needed a logo for it. I remember I started to sketch up this logo, and somehow I got it right from the first try. Luckily when I showed it to the others from the band, they also liked it very much, so we stuck to it. I want to tell another interesting thing about the band name, which by the way came as a must because our first show was around the corner and we didn't have a band name yet, and we had to name our band finally fort his show at least, somehow. So we mixed two name ideas: Black Symphony which came from me and Psychical Depression which came from Robert... that's how the name Psycho Symphony was made up! And initially was a short term solution for that show only, but we started to like the name so much that we decided to keep it. The Silent Fall album artwork is also very interesting: I found a picture in a Hungarian magazine I liked so much. We used that picture for the album cover, when we made the Silent Fall cassette. But it was in a really low resolution and in a not so good quality...on the cassette it looks very very far away from the original artwork. Later, before we made the re-edit of the album in 2025 I searched a lot on the internet to find the original picture. After a lot of searching I found it! The painter passed away many years before. But this time I asked for permission from the painter’s daughter to use the painting design for the album. The Schizoid EP album cover was painted by me, I made it specially for that album. It was a dream of mine to make a painting which one day would appear as an album cover.
You haven't collaborated with any label to release your albums; you've released them all yourself. Why don't you choose a label to release your albums? I know that your 1997 album "Silent Fall" is about to be released by Rude Awakening Records in Italy. This is a very good label. How did you get in touch with this label and collaborate with them?
Yes it's true, we never signed with a big record label. But it's also true that we got few contract offers in the late '90 from a few record labels from Romania, but we turned them down because we didn't like their conditions. After we released Schizoid EP, we sent it to more European record labels, and we got an answer from InsideOut Music (if I remember well) and they told us that the music was really good, but unfortunately it was a too complex music to be able for them to sell it and make money from it. Regarding Rude Awakening, we are very happy that we can collaborate with them! Gabriele Cruz wrote me a message few years ago, with the intention of re-releasing the album Silent Fall. Initially we were interested and we were all in for it, but after a period of time we got to have some disagreements between us (the band members) on how we could finalize this agreement. Unfortunately because one of us was not satisfied with the conditions from the contract and generally with the re-releasing, we decided to turn down the offer. At almost the same time, another record label from Romania named Loud Rage Music was also interested in the re-releasing of the album. After a lot of debates and arguing between our band members, we agreed to sign with that record label, who was mainly specialized in selling the physical copies of the album (the CDs). But because we needed to have digital and online distribution too, a bit later we decided to contact Rude Awakening to help us in distribution of the album worldwide, that's how we signed with them.
这张专辑以最简洁的方式演绎了Speed/tThrash。
You have successfully created one of the most perplexing and confusing sounds in the history of Thrash Metal. Your creative methods transcend the boundaries of Thrash Metal, defying categorization and best described as "the chaotic hallucinations of a twisted musical madman." This definition may not fully capture the album, because after repeated listens, progressive/technical metal fans will discover many admirable aspects. The album plays speed/thrash in the simplest way possible. The opening track, "The King," features dazzling atonal improvisational repetitions, accompanied by a beautiful folk-style intro and clean vocals. All your arrangements are meticulously crafted, showcasing your exceptional technical skill. Every riff is carefully refined, demonstrating your dedication and seriousness towards each song, aiming to deliver the highest quality work to every fan. What are your thoughts on your work?
Oh, you are very, very nice, It feels really good to hear that, thank you very much for your kind words! I'm happy that through our riffs one can hear the enormous work and passion we put in our music. For example we worked 12 months on the song "Reality Falls Asleep". We have in this song some parts, I don't know kinda only 13-15 seconds long, on what we worked for three weeks, no joke. We refined every part, every time until it sounded as close as possible to what we imagined. We were trying and experimenting everything which came in our minds, and we were enjoying it and liked so much this process, that we acted in this way at every song creation. We were crazy sometimes, I remember at that time that we spent whole weekends, three days in row in the rehearsal room, we slept and ate there, just to not break the creative process. Like I said, we enjoyed very much doing music together.
As one of Romania's finest veteran bands, you have performed in many live shows. Which of these live shows have left a deep impression on you? Have you performed in any live shows in recent years?
Yes, one of our main goals from the beginning was to participate in as many live shows as we can. And we did everything to achieve this. We enjoyed so much to be on the stage to perform live music, to show it to others too. We had many, many live appearances, some of them very good others not so. But every time it was a very nice and fulfilling feeling to be on the stage with my band mates. It doesn't matter how the reaction of the crowd was, we enjoyed being here together. It would to be hard to choose one, but even so and for me at least, one of the most memorable one was the gig were we won our first contest at a talent festival in '94 in Satu Mare. That was so unexpected, so unbelievable, so beautiful like in a fairy tale. Beside that we played once in Budapest at Pepsi Island, where we were invited to play on the Metal Hammer stage. That was magical too! Like I said before, we had long time ago our last show, at our 20th Anniversary tour. Since then nothing happened unfortunately. Last year we had an invitation to a festival from Bucharest, specially organized for bands who are disbanded or not active since long time. But sadly we had to turn down the invitation, because the relation between some of the band members got so worse in the last period, that we don't see any chance that we will have a show in the future. Ten years ago, kinda after the Anniversary tour, me with our drummer Gábor made a new band called Untold Faith, because we had so many ideas to make music that we didn't want to not make music, and to stay away from the stage too long. Later to this band joined Robert on bass too, having a really strong formula again. We had a different singer though. We were active for 10 years, but after the Pandemic we stopped the band. After this I kinda stopped making music. Robert was part of other bands for short periods, and lately he is mostly concentrating on his work as archaeologist, and also not making music. Emil moved to other town since very long time, and he is making his own atmospheric music in his project called Fluidian.
What are your thoughts on the current music scene? How has it changed since your generation? What are your opinions on many of the new bands today? What is the current state of the metal scene in Romania? Are there any bands you would recommend?
I always was a fan of the underground metal scene, because I think it is one of the most sincere one, it's not corrupted by money, and mostly you can hear a music which is honest. Lately though I'm not too connected to what is happening in the underground scene, at least not as much as I was when I was an active musician. I've seen a lot of good bands here also. For example since we played shows back in time outside the country too, I could compare those underground scenes between each other. In my generation, among the Romanian bands were a lot of bands who were driven by originality. Lately I noticed that it’s a bit different, I see that the young bands are striving to sound more like the commercial western bands. This is mostly because in my era we didn't have the tools to make a good sound. We struggled a lot because of the musical instruments, we had mostly trash instruments available. And now everybody can have access easily from decent to very good instruments. This way a good sound is also easily achievable. About the many new bands, I'm happy to see that there so many. I think there is place for everybody and every band. From the rise of Spotify we have access to a ton of bands and music. From the listening perspective this is very good. I could find this way a lot of unknown bands to me till then, which I started to like a lot after hearing their music. Here in Romania I started to like bands like the progressive instrumental band called "Asemic" (we were touring with them when we were playing in Untold Faith). The long time friends of ours, the technical death metal band "Taine". Also in the same genre the band "Illuminati". I also like very much "Transceatla", we played with them once (unfortunately no records with them). But like I said, unfortunately lately I'm not too aware of the newest movement in the scene.
You are an excellent band, and I will continue to follow and support you. I also look forward to the re-release of your only album, which will be a milestone release because it will allow more fans to get to know and appreciate your band, and allow more young fans to experience your talent. I also hope that through this interview, more Chinese fans will get to know and understand your band. The interview is coming to an end. Is there anything you would like to say to your Chinese fans?
Thank you very very much, we feel honored and it is much appreciated saying that about us!
We would like to say to any metal fan from China, to search and listen new bands, bands who are expressing their feelings through music in not so common way. Look after these bands, ‘cause you can find hidden gems in this way, and reach through their music to a new and maybe unknown sentimental experience. For us Psycho Symphony, it's an honor that through this interview we could share our thoughts and feelings to the readers. We wish all the best to all of you!
