ree

Today's interview was with Death Metal band 1917 from Argentina. The band's name comes from an instrumental piece created in 1992-1993. The band's founder, Alejandro Sabransky, added N.N. embellishments before 1917 to maintain the band's mystique. However, in the end, Alejandro Sabransky simplified the band's name and removed the N.N. embellishments. In 1996, the band released their first demo work "Bienvenido a la nada", and in 1998, the band independently released their first official album "Inti Huacay", which received widespread praise and attention. If you are a fan of Old School, please be sure to pay attention to this 1917 from Argentina, featuring retro Riff and arrangement. The founder of the band, Alejandro Sabransky, is also an excellent musician, and one can feel that Alejandro Sabransky In this regard, the band is very particular, and subsequently released multiple works that received praise and attention. Although the band's lineup has undergone multiple changes, the band currently maintains a lineup of two people, bassist Mario Mansilla and founder Alejandro Sabransky. The band has also abandoned the bloody music theme often used in the Death Metal style and instead adopted music themes such as poetry and art, which better enhances the band's musical literacy. As the most qualified band in Argentina, 1917 released a 2019 album called "Versions ap ó crifas" The tribute album is released by an Argentine label, with a total of 13 bands participating in this tribute album, including 12 from local Argentine bands and one from Uruguay. They recorded the album works of 1917 band in each period. The release of this album also made them the first Argentine tribute band. This year, the band just released their latest album "Factor Bestial", and on the occasion of the release of the new album, the magazine contacted the band's founder Alejandro Sabransky for an exclusive interview!

Hello Alejandro, it's great to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has been interviewed by a Chinese magazine. First of all, let's say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. 1917 band was founded in 1994 and is a long-standing band. How did you form this band in the first place? The original band name was N.N.1917, why did you change the band name? What does the name 1917 mean?

Nice to meet you! And you're absolutely right—this is the first time we've appeared in a Chinese zine, so I’m sending a loud and metallic greeting to all the metalheads out there! 1917 was founded in mid-1994, originally with the intention of playing death metal and thrash metal. Despite the years that have passed, we’ve stayed true to our musical roots, even as the project and we as musicians have naturally evolved. The band’s name comes from one of our earliest compositions, an instrumental piece titled “1917.” We initially added “N.N.” to make it more mysterious, but eventually decided to simplify it.

At present, there are only two members in the band, you and Mario. Mario joined the band in 2015. Before he joined, did the band have other members or was it just you? How did Mario join the band and are you satisfied with his job?

The band originally consisted of four members, from 1994 until 1999 (demo and first album). After that, we continued as a trio until 2001, then as a duo until 2006 (three albums), when I ended up as the sole member. After recording three more albums, 1917 returned to the duo format—as you mentioned—with Mario joining the project, and since then we released six more albums and a live session. For live performances, which are occasional since we don’t usually tour, we’ve invited additional guest musicians. Mario fits perfectly with 1917’s vision; he’s a very talented bassist and his contributions really enrich the material. We’re very comfortable working together.

You only have two members, so it will be very convenient for you to create songs. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will bring inspiration to many young musicians!

I write a lot of music, both for 1917 and for my other projects—Bokrug, Funeris, Ammentia, Anatomical Theatre, Dwimor. I truly love music, and for me it's a necessity to stay connected to this art form, to keep creating and expressing ideas. From the very beginning, I chose not to follow trends or the commercial side of the scene. I’ve always done what feels authentic, without letting external pressures shape my work. In a way, it’s a constant search, and because of my curiosity and personal taste, I explore different facets of extreme metal. I believe one of the reasons my drive and energy remain strong is precisely because I adopted that mindset early on. It’s a lot of work, no doubt, and there are plenty of limitations—but the personal satisfaction is immense.

Your logo design is very distinctive. Who designed this logo for you? Your album art design is also very distinctive. Who designed these artworks for you?

The logo was designed by an old friend, who gifted it to me shortly before we recorded our second album. Over time, it went through a few minor changes, but nothing drastic. I was in charge of the album cover art for many years, until ASK Diseños took over that role—for 1917 as well as my other projects. I believe each cover truly captures the essence of the album it represents.

Philosophy, Poetry, Art, Religion, Psychology are your music themes. Why did you choose those music themes? What do you want to express through this music themes? What inspires you?

As you rightly pointed out, those are the main themes in 1917. I’d say it’s not really a conscious choice—when I write, I naturally focus on the things that matter to me, that trouble me, that push me to reflect. And the music we create provides the perfect framework for those topics. I enjoy writing intense, dark, somewhat twisted poetry that explores themes with similar characteristics. So the lyrics and the music complement each other perfectly.

You have collaborated with some labels to release albums, but most of your works are self released on CDs. Why don't you continue to collaborate with labels and choose to release albums on your own?

At certain points in my career, I found it worthwhile to collaborate with labels, but I’ve never made that a condition for working. When the timing felt right, I went for it—but overall, I believe independent work offers greater creative freedom. It does come with more limitations, of course, but independence is a fundamental part of 1917’s identity. I’m not closed off to working with labels, but it has to feel like the right people and the right moment. With some of my other projects, it’s easier to delegate that responsibility, but 1917 remains something very personal to me. When it comes to label collaborations, I think the most valuable aspect for 1917 is releasing material outside Argentina. Within my country, I prefer to handle releases myself. For reissues abroad, we’re definitely open to working with interested labels.

In 2019, a tribute to your band titled "Versions apócrifas" was released, making you the first Argentine band to be honored. What do you think of this album?

That was absolutely awesome! I felt it like an honor, a moment of pure recognition that I’ll carry with me forever. You know, working independently, doing something I truly believe in, without getting involved in the “business” side of music—and then one day, a group of newer bands along with some veteran ones come together to create a tribute album to 1917... it was simply touching. It’s one of the greatest gifts music has ever given me.

First of all, congratulations to your band for releasing their finest work this year. This is a classic old-fashioned death metal work that has been deeply influenced by the old school, with complex arrangements and varied riffs. Although your drums are sampled from Drum programming, they are very close to real drums. The fierce and vicious singing also makes your work even more evil. What is your opinion on your own work, and how have the new album changed compared to the old ones?

Thanks for the kind words! I believe Factor Bestial is a worthy successor to the albums that came before it. With each release, I feel we grow a little more mature, and while we stay true to our roots, we’ve managed to keep things fresh. We're not trying to innovate for the sake of it—we’re more focused on deepening our artistic vision. We’re really proud of this new record. Personally, I think it sounds more “thought-out” than some of the earlier ones, which maybe had a bit more raw aggression. But I see a clear thread running through it all, and that feels really important to me.

As a highly qualified veteran band from Argentina, which music festivals have you participated in and which ones have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Are there any other music festivals in 2025 that invite you to participate?

Right now we’re without a drummer, so live shows are on hold. We’ve been invited to several festivals, but unfortunately we’ve had to decline. Maybe we’ll revisit that down the line. In the meantime, we’ve used this period without a stable lineup to focus on the new album, so I guess from here on we’ll try to complete the band and get back to touring. Time will tell. We’re not in a rush, really, since Mario and I are currently working on some stuff.

Besides releasing a new album in 2025, what other work do you have to do? Can you share some information with everyone?

A: 当然!

Sure! Right now, Mario and I are working on new material for Ammentia—initially for a compilation CD, and then without a doubt aiming to record a full-length album. As for me, I’m wrapping up the recording of a new Funeris album, and I’m also polishing what will be my next book of horror and science fiction stories. I’m finishing the writing process for what will eventually become the new albums of Bokrug and Anatomical Theatre, though those are definitely projects for next year.

I am a loyal fan of your band and I will always support and follow your band. I also hope to attract more Chinese fans to follow and support your band through this interview. Do you have anything to say to Chinese fans at the end of the interview?

We truly appreciate the space and support—and of course, it would be amazing to connect with more metalheads in China and exchange music and experiences. Hopefully this interview can be the starting point for new connections over there. We’re sending a massive metal salute your way, and we’re at your disposal for whatever comes next. Cheers and horns up!
