When it comes to metal music from Poland, most people immediately think of the country's distinctive black metal scene. Today, the magazine interviews Christ Agony, a veteran Polish melodic black metal band. Formed in 1990, the band centers its work around Satanic and anti-Christian themes. Their debut full-length album, Unholyunion, gained widespread recognition within the 1990s black metal community upon its release in 1993. On September 26, 2025, Christ Agony will release their latest full-length album, Anthems. The magazine connected with band founder Cezary Augustynowicz for an exclusive interview.

Even though distance separates us, music has the power to connect people beyond borders and cultures. Christ Agony is a long-established Black Metal band. Could you tell us about the band's history? When did you begin creating music? What prompted you to choose black metal as your genre?

Christ Agony was founded in 1990 in Poland. From the very beginning, our ambition was to create music that combines darkness, spirituality, and extreme power. The first songs were written at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, during a time when the European metal scene was exploding with creativity. We chose black metal not because it was fashionable or popular, but because it gave us total freedom of expression — the chance to create music filled with emotion, melancholy, and mysticism. For me, it has always been more than just a genre; it is a form of spiritual expression. This authenticity and need for expression are what have kept Christ Agony true to its path for more than 30 years.
V: 在开始聊音乐之前我想聊聊乐队的名字,为什么乐队选择叫Christ Agony?在2005年到2007年之间,你们以Union的名义展开活动,这是为什么呢?
Before we dive into the music, I'd like to talk about the band's name. Why did you choose to call yourselves Christ Agony? Between 2005 and 2007, you performed under the name Union. Why was that?
C: 选择Christ Agony这个名字,是为了表达对教条和宗教虚伪的抗争。这并非为亵渎而亵渎,而是精神叛逆的体现,是在被强加的信仰体系主导的世界中追寻自我真理的宣言。“基督之痛”象征着每个人内心深处的苦难,而音乐正是释放这种痛苦的途径。我们以Union之名演出的时期(2005-2007年)实属无奈之举,源于法律纠纷及名称权问题。但对我们而言,始终是Christ Agony,一旦条件允许便立即回归本名。Union只是过渡阶段,而Christ Agony才是我们三十余年来真正的身份标识。
The name Christ Agony was chosen to express opposition to dogmas and religious hypocrisy. It is not blasphemy for the sake of blasphemy, but rather a manifestation of spiritual rebellion and the search for one’s own truth in a world dominated by imposed systems of belief. “The agony of Christ” symbolizes the suffering that each of us carries within, and which can find its release through music. The period when we performed under the name Union (2005–2007) was forced by legal issues and problems with the rights to the name. But for us, we were always Christ Agony, and as soon as it was possible, we returned to our true name. Union was only an episode, while Christ Agony has been our real identity for more than three decades.
V: 你们的第一张全长专辑"Unholyunion"由四首时长都在10分钟左右的歌曲组成,为什么选择创作这类长篇幅歌曲?
Your debut full-length album Unholyunion consists of four tracks, each around ten minutes long. Why did you choose to create such extended pieces?
C: 自Christ Agony成立之初,我就希望音乐能成为一种体验——一场旅程,而非短曲的堆砌。因此首专"Unholyunion"仅收录四首作品,每首都超过十分钟。它们本质上是音乐组曲,尽管只有四首曲目,专辑时长却超过52分钟。每首曲目本身就是一场仪式,充满氛围感、情绪转换与让听众沉醉的空间。我从未对制作“单曲”或简单形式感兴趣,而是希望音乐能自由呼吸、不断演变,将听众引入神秘的恍惚状态。这个理念至今仍贯穿于我们的创作——无论歌曲长短,"Unholyunion"始终致力于打造情感与精神的旅程。
From the very beginning of Christ Agony, I wanted the music to be an experience — a journey, not just a collection of short tracks. That is why our debut album “Unholyunion” contains only four songs, each of them over ten minutes long. They are essentially musical suites, and although there are just four compositions, the album lasts more than 52 minutes.
Each track was meant to be a ritual in itself, full of atmosphere, changes of mood, and space for the listener to lose themselves in. I was never interested in making “singles” or simple forms. I wanted the music to breathe, to evolve, and to pull the listener into a mystical trance. This concept has stayed with us to this day — Christ Agony always strives to create an emotional and spiritual journey, regardless of the length of the songs.
V: Christ Agony的歌曲既有优美的旋律,也有Black Metal的残暴和哀伤的底色,我想知道在音乐创作上队你影响最大的乐队都有哪些?
Christ Agony's songs blend beautiful melodies with the brutality and melancholy undertones of black metal. I'm curious—which bands have had the most significant influence on your musical compositions?

My inspirations have always been very broad. Growing up in the 1980s, I naturally listened to the metal classics — bands like Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Bathory, and Venom. These were the foundations that opened the gates to the world of dark music for me. At the same time, I was deeply fascinated by a completely different side of music — the releases of the English label 4AD. Bands such as Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, The Wolfgang Press, or Bauhaus had a huge impact on my sensitivity and on how I perceive atmosphere in music. It was a different aesthetic than metal, but looking back now, it was just as important in shaping me as an artist. That is why Christ Agony was never meant to be only about brutality and extremity. I wanted to create music filled with melancholy, spiritual aura, and mysticism. You can hear echoes of classic black and death metal acts in our work, but also subtle influences from that atmospheric, non-metal world. This blend is what has made our style so personal and unique.
V: 2025年9月26日,你们将要发行一张新专辑"Anthems"。你们的上一张全长专辑于2016年发行,是什么让这两张专辑发行时间间隔如此之久?
On September 26, 2025, you will release a new album titled Anthems. Your last full-length album was released in 2016. What caused such a long gap between these two albums?
C: 自"Legacy"发行确实已过去很久。但这并非完全沉寂的时期——我始终活跃于音乐领域,参与其他项目的录制演出,探索不同创意,同时Christ Agony回归的愿景也在我心中逐渐成形。我需要这段间隔期来抽身审视全局。我不愿为发布而发布新专辑。"Anthems"必须在恰当时机诞生——当我真正感受到体内涌动的能量与灵感。因此某种意义上,这段漫长间隔不可或缺。它让基督之痛以更强大的姿态回归,用音乐真实诠释我们历经岁月沉淀后的本质与身份。
It’s true that a lot of time has passed since the release of “Legacy.” But it was not a period of complete silence — I was still musically active, recording and performing with other projects, developing different ideas, and at the same time, the vision of Christ Agony’s return was slowly maturing inside me. I also needed this break to take a step back and see everything from a distance. I didn’t want to release a new album just for the sake of having something out. “Anthems” had to be born at the right moment — when I truly felt the energy and inspiration inside me. So in a way, this long gap was necessary. It allowed Christ Agony to come back stronger, with music that genuinely represents our essence and identity after so many years of existence.

Regarding this new album after so many years, what else can you tell us about this new album Anthems? How does this album differ from Christ Agony's previous albums?
C: "Anthems"完整呈现了Christ Agony多年的演变历程。我们既保留了标志性的黑暗氛围、忧郁气质与精神张力,新作在创作与制作层面也更显成熟。每首曲目都经过精心雕琢,在极端与旋律、残暴与神秘氛围间取得平衡。概念上亦有所突破——六首作品构成浑然一体的整体,宛如当代颂歌集,旨在触动情感,引领听众踏上音乐之旅。在"Anthems"的制作中,我们再度携手长期合作的工程师Michał Grabowski,他深谙Christ Agony的音乐精髓。经由他的混音调校,所有元素被熔铸成浑然一体的磅礴之作,成就了真正的颂歌。
“Anthems” is an album that fully reflects the evolution of Christ Agony over the years. While we have preserved our characteristic atmosphere of darkness, melancholy, and spiritual intensity, the new material is more mature in terms of composition and production. Each track was carefully crafted to balance extremity with melody, brutality with mystical aura. The album also differs conceptually — all six songs form a cohesive whole, like a set of contemporary anthems meant to move emotions and draw the listener into a musical journey. For “Anthems”, we worked with Michał Grabowski, our long-time engineer, who understands Christ Agony’s music perfectly. Thanks to his mixing, all elements were combined into a unified and powerful whole, creating true anthems.
V: 新专辑《Anthems》发行之后,Christ Agony有哪些演出计划吗?在2025年你们还有哪些计划或者想要完成的事情?
Following the release of the new album Anthems, what are Christ Agony's upcoming performance plans? What other goals or aspirations does the band have for 2025?
"Anthems"发行后,我们计划重返舞台,将新歌现场呈现给乐迷。目前已在波兰安排演出并计划展开欧洲巡演,包括法国、西班牙等国家的音乐会。我们希望演出能成为专辑体验的延伸——充满能量、黑暗与神秘氛围。除巡演外,2025年的目标包括深化Christ Agony乐队的音乐风格、探索新创意并保持高水准艺术表现。我们将继续融合极端元素与忧郁气质及精神深度,同时坚守乐队核心特质。
After the release of “Anthems”, we plan to return to the stage and present the new songs live to our fans. We have shows planned in Poland as well as a European tour, including concerts in France, Spain, and other countries. We want the performances to be an extension of the album experience — full of energy, darkness, and mystical atmosphere. Beyond the tour, our goals for 2025 include further developing Christ Agony’s music, working on new ideas, and maintaining a high artistic standard. We want our music to continue blending extremity with melancholy and spiritual depth, while staying true to the band’s identity.
V: 你们的新专辑将会由波兰厂牌Deformeathing Production发行,这是你们第一次合作吗?为什么你会选择这个厂牌?
Your new album will be released by the Polish label Deformeathing Production. Is this your first collaboration with them? Why did you choose this label?

This is not our first project with Deformeathing Production. Previously, we collaborated on reissues of our earlier releases, so we know them well and trust the label completely. We chose them for the release of “Anthems” because they fully understand extreme music and the vision of Christ Agony. This collaboration allowed us to focus entirely on creating the music and refining every detail of the album, confident that the release would be handled with care and that our fans would receive a product fully aligned with our artistic vision. “Anthems” is our new, joint creation, not just a continuation of previous projects.
V: 你们的创作主题包括撒旦主义,反基督思想以及个体的悲伤。在创作歌词的时候,你的灵感一般都来自哪里?
Your creative themes encompass Satanism, anti-Christian ideology, and individual sorrow. When writing lyrics, where does your inspiration typically come from?
C: 我创作歌词的灵感始终源于对人类存在、情感以及我们在世界中定位的深刻反思。撒旦主义或反基督教思想等主题,是我表达对强加教条、虚伪行径及精神桎梏反抗的方式。与此同时,许多歌词也源于每个人内心深处的痛苦、忧郁与孤独。我力求用文字营造出黑暗而神秘的氛围,让听众能在其中发现自己的情感与思考。歌词的解读权始终交给每位听众——正如解读诗歌一般。因此,基督之痛的歌词融合了哲学叛逆、精神探索与情感深度。
My inspiration for writing lyrics has always come from deep reflection on human existence, emotions, and our place in the world. Themes such as Satanism or anti-Christian ideology are a way for me to express rebellion against imposed dogmas, hypocrisy, and spiritual limitations. At the same time, many lyrics draw from personal experiences of suffering, melancholy, and solitude that everyone carries within. I strive for the words to create a dark, mystical atmosphere where the listener can discover their own emotions and reflections. I leave the interpretation of the lyrics to each individual — just as one interprets poetry. Christ Agony’s lyrics are therefore a blend of philosophical rebellion, spiritual journey, and emotional depth.
V: Christ Agony的作品数量非常多,我想知道你平时是怎么记录自己的创作灵感的?
Christ Agony has produced an enormous body of work. I'm curious how you typically document your creative inspiration?
C: 我会根据具体情况和需求,通过多种方式记录音乐和歌词的灵感与构思。通常先创作音乐草稿、演示版或笔记,随后将其发展成完整歌曲。歌词则通过手写或数字方式记录,有时先以自由诗般的笔记形式呈现,再逐步打磨成最终歌词。近年来科技极大助力了我的创作。拥有个人家庭录音室已有数年,既能为Christ Agony录制作品,也能处理其他项目。九十年代可用的录音室寥寥无几,即便找到也常因资金不足,无法以完全契合艺术构想的方式制作整张专辑。如今我能自由录音、大胆尝试、不受限制地发展创意,这极大促进了创作进程。我同样珍视沉思与观察的时刻——灵感常在日常生活中悄然降临:旅途、散步或录音室的静谧中。所有录制的素材都会经过黑暗、忧郁与神秘主义的滤镜重塑,这正是Christ Agony的核心精髓。如此一来,创意永不流失,创作过程始终保持着连贯而深邃的质感。
I document inspirations and ideas for music and lyrics in various ways, depending on the situation and needs. Often, I start with musical sketches, demos, or notes, which I later develop into complete songs. Lyrics are recorded either by hand or digitally, sometimes first as free, poetic notes, which are then transformed into finished lyrics. Technology has greatly helped me in recent years. For several years now, I have had my own home studio, where I can record music for Christ Agony as well as other projects. In the 1990s, there were very few recording studios available, and if there were, there were often insufficient funds to produce an entire album in a way that fully reflected my artistic vision. Today, I can record freely, experiment, and develop ideas without limitations, which greatly facilitates the creative process. I also value moments of reflection and observation — inspiration often comes in everyday life, during travel, walks, or in the quiet of the studio. Everything I record is then filtered through the lens of darkness, melancholy, and mysticism, which are the essence of Christ Agony. This way, ideas are never lost, and the creative process remains coherent and profound.
V: 对于许多金属乐迷来说,波兰的金属音乐场景是比较陌生的,作为一支成立超过30年的乐队,可以从你们的角度来讲讲波兰的金属音乐场景是怎样的吗?
For many metalheads in China, Poland's metal music scene is relatively unfamiliar. As a band with over 30 years of history, could you share your perspective on what the Polish metal scene is like?
C: 波兰金属乐坛独具特色且多元丰富,尽管其作品在海外始终未能广泛传播。自80、90年代起,本土乐队便将极致能量与氛围感、神秘主义完美融合。虽然规模有限,但乐手们充满决心且富有创造力,孕育出纯粹而毫不妥协的音乐。三十余载间,我见证了波兰金属的演变——新锐艺术家层出不穷,风格日益多元,而极端音效的根基始终未变。波兰场景始终具有鲜明特质:阴郁、激烈、充满激情与精神深度。对基督苦难乐队而言,这片土壤始终是创作灵感源泉,激励我们持续打造融合残暴、忧郁与神秘主义的音乐。
The Polish metal scene is unique and very diverse, although it has not always been easily accessible to a wider audience abroad. Since the 1980s and 1990s, bands emerged here that combined extreme energy with atmosphere and mysticism. The scene was small but highly determined and creative, which allowed for authentic and uncompromising music. Over more than 30 years, I have seen Polish metal evolve — new artists appeared, increasingly diverse styles developed, while the foundations of extreme sound remained unchanged. The Polish scene has always had its distinctive character: dark, intense, full of passion and spiritual depth. For Christ Agony, it has been and continues to be an inspiration to create music that blends brutality with melancholy and mysticism.
V: 在你看来,波兰的Black Metal音乐场景和欧洲其他国家的黑金属音乐场景最大的不同是什么?
In your opinion, what is the biggest difference between the black metal music scene in Poland and those in other European countries?

The Polish black metal scene stands out primarily for its atmosphere and emotional depth. In many European countries, black metal often developed in the direction of extreme technicality or “show” aesthetics, while in Poland, authenticity and spiritual depth have always been the most important. Polish artists place strong emphasis on creating mood, melancholy, and dark, mystical atmospheres. This gives Polish black metal its unique weight, intensity, and emotional power, distinguishing it from other European scenes. For Christ Agony, the character of the Polish scene has always been an inspiration to create music that blends extremity with spiritual reflection.
V: 如果未来有机会,你想去参加哪些金属音乐节?你有哪些希望同台演出的乐手或者乐队吗?
If you had the chance in the future, which metal music festivals would you like to attend? Are there any musicians or bands you'd hope to share the stage with?

In the future, I would love to participate in festivals that truly celebrate extreme music and the atmosphere of the black and death metal scene. Festivals like Wacken Open Air, Inferno Metal Festival, or Hellfest have always been places to connect with fans and the music that inspires me. Regarding sharing the stage, I dream of performing alongside bands that have had a huge impact on my musical life — classics like Celtic Frost, Bathory, or modern acts that combine brutality with atmosphere, such as Mayhem or Behemoth. Unfortunately, I will never have the chance to share the stage with Celtic Frost or Bathory, because these bands no longer exist, although they left a tremendous legacy. Christ Agony’s first European tour was alongside Behemoth and Hellheim, and for each of these bands, it was their debut tour — it was a unique experience and an important moment in the history of our scene. For me, the most important thing is sharing the stage with artists who create music full of passion, darkness, and spiritual depth, because that resonates with the essence of Christ Agony.
