Today's interview is with Detësto, a D-Beat / Punk band from Brazil, formed in 2017, Detësto was influenced by Swedish D-Beat / Punk bands DISCHANGE, DISCARD, DISFEAR, SEITAN, WARCOLLAPSE, SVART PARAD, AVSKUM, MOB47, NO SECURITY, DRILLER KILLER, SKITSYSTEM, BOMBANFALL, etc. The founder of the band, Wallas, went to Sweden in 2010, where I saw festivals like PUNK ILLEGAL and other gigs, and it was a magical moment for him, to be able to It was a magical moment for him, to be able to see with my own eyes something that I only knew about through magazines and letters, and this prompted Wallas to create the idea of Detësto, but due to work reasons the band wasn't formed until 2017, when HÉLIO joined the band as guitarist, but soon after HÉLIO quit the band to be replaced by ZIGGY, but the band couldn't find someone who could play bass until 2021, when the band was formed. However, the band never found a bassist who could handle it, and it wasn't until 2021 that RATTÖ joined the band as a bassist, and in 2024 the first drummer quit the band and was replaced by Jay, and Wallas also organized some small gigs, inviting bands from Brazil, the USA, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Peru, Slovakia, and other countries to perform with him. Hello! My name is Wallas and I am the vocalist of the band Detësto and it is a great pleasure to be answering this interview for a Chinese Magazine! Well, I really love the Swedish scene of D-Beat/Punk bands like DISCHANGE, DISCARD, DISFEAR, SEITAN, WARCOLLAPSE, SVART PARAD, AVSKUM, MOB47, NO SECURITY, DRILLER KILLER, SKITSYSTEM, BOMBANFALL, etc. and in 2010 I went to Sweden and there I saw festivals like PUNK ILLEGAL, other gigs and it was a magical moment for me and I was able to see in person a little of what I only knew through zines and letters from people I corresponded with and that gave me a “start” to start, at the beginning, this project, which would have nothing new, but just that kind of sound that I loved so much. It took a while for me to be able to start the band, due to work, difficulty finding members for it and finally from 2016 things, even though they slowly started to happen and a friend of mine agreed to do this project. We consider the beginning of the band to be the year 2017, when HÉLIO (who plays in an important Thrash Metal band in my city) joined the band on guitar, staying for a while and then being replaced by ZIGGY – which was very important because he really gave the personality we needed - and on bass we always had difficulty finding someone and always a friend helped us temporarily, until in 2021, RATTÖ finally joined the band to make up for this lack of a fixed bassist. Now, at the end of 2024, the drummer who helped me create the band left and JAY came in his place. Our style/influence in short I could say it's the Swedish D-beat/Crust of the 90's with a "spice" of HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST. In DETËSTO I was the only one who hadn't been in a band before – I've only done a few things, but nothing serious – but I was always involved in some way, through my contacts whenever possible I helped bands on gigs and DIY tours and after some time for nothing happens in my city, I started organizing gigs here, with bands from different parts of my country, as well as bands from other countries like USA, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Peru, Slovakia and others.

How many members do you have and are you all first generation members? Have you ever changed members? How do new members join the band? What do you think of the new members?

Today Detësto has ZIGGY (guitar), RATTÖ (bass) and JAY (drums) and me (WALLAS) on vocals and with the departure of the drummer – who was an original member – only I am now part of the first formation, although only In 2021, with the arrival of RATTÖ, we had a permanent bassist who really belongs to the band. Even though the band is from a city (called Campinas) with more than 1 million inhabitants, it has always been very difficult to find members for the band, as the d-beat/crust scene is not strong in my city and there have always been stories to tell with people from other cities, which was partly very difficult for us due to the costs and also our lives, as we all have our managers, families, children and this hindered us a little, so some changes in training were natural for me. We have our priorities in our personal lives, but when we dedicate time to the band, I believe that you should be 100% involved with it, because other people are involved and in the case of our band, they sacrifice the time they could spend with their families and do other things for being with the band, that's why I think it's more honest when you're not “motivated”, to give your place to someone else who is and don't get in the way of others and follow your path, in whatever makes you happy.


V: 你们能描述一下你们的创作过程吗?我知道你们刚刚发布了最新的EP,这张专辑的写歌过程如何进行的?


Can you guys describe your creative process? I know you've just released your latest EP, how is the writing process going for this album?

Our creative process is simple: During rehearsals, someone brings a riff that we like and we work on it and then I add lyrics, usually when the sound is practically ready. We sing in English and we also have some lyrics in Swedish, in these lyrics we have a Swedish friend who helps us with the translations. In our last EP “HORRENDOUS REALITY OF WAR” the process was like the others, someone saw it with a riff and we worked on that, just 2 sounds from our first demo – which came out on a CDR made by us – we made new versions in 2 sounds , as we had a very short time to record, as we would have a break and this was the solution found.


V: 你们的作品在录音效果方面非常出色,请问你们是在哪个录音棚录制的专辑?哪位制作人制作了你们的专辑?新专辑的录制进展如何?


Your work is outstanding in terms of recording results, what studio did you record the album in? Which producer produced your album? How did the recording of the new album progress?

Thanks! I also really liked the final result, as it was actually supposed to be a 12” LP, but we had some setbacks and my first child was going to be born, which reduced our rehearsal and recording time, so we decided to record just 6 sounds. In this EP we use a different tuning and distortion of the bass, and we are more crust than d-beat, that is, a faster sound than that d-beat cadence, but this came naturally. We recorded in our city CAMPINAS at CASA 39 ESTUDIO and the recording and mixing was in charge of RODRIGO, who is already used to our sound and knows what we want and the recording was very easy, and even though it is a cliche, this EP “HORRENDOUS REALITY OF WAR” was our best recording to date and we were very pleased with the final result.


V: 你们乐队的Logo很特别是一只鹰,这让我想起了Slayer乐队,是谁为你们设计了这个Logo?你们专辑中的大部分插图都是真实的照片,很多是战争时期的照片,是谁为你们设计的插图?


Your band's logo is unique in that it's an eagle, it reminds me of Slayer's, who designed this logo for you? Most of the artwork on your albums are real photographs, many from the war, who designed the artwork for you?

In fact, it's like a “tribute” not to Slayer – which we also like! - but for a Swedish band called Wolfpack (currently Wolfbrigade) and as we are a so-called "third world" country and because we are influenced by the Swedish scene, we made a ragged vulture haha ​​instead of wolfpack's imposing eagle. This art was made by Jef. This last art for the EP "HORRENDOUS REALITY OF WAR" was created by our friend ALDO COSTAS SKETCH, who always helped us with the graphics/art of the band DETËSTO and to whom we are very grateful! He does great work and has really cool books and zines.

Your latest EP was released on tape and vinyl on Future Gloom Records in Italy and SPHC Records in the U.S. How did you get in touch with these two labels to collaborate? Have you released any of your previous work on physical albums?

The release of the EP “HORRENDOUS REALITY OF WAR” was released in December on TAPE in Italy by FUTURE GLOOM RECORDS and I was very happy with the final result, as it was done with great care and has 2 recorded rehearsal sounds as a bonus. The Vinyl is a little delayed and is currently in production and will now be released in the first quarter of 2025 by SPHC RECORDS. In the case of the tape, I was talking to SIMONE from FUTURE GLOOM RECORDS for some time and he talked about his interest in releasing something from the band one day and it was finally possible. DAN from SPHC RECORDS I've known him for a few years, because his old band did a tour together with the Japanese band SETE STAR SEPT in BRAZIL and I helped on the tour and met him personally and when I sent him the sounds of my band, He was interested in releasing our first EP and now this one on vinyl. DETËSTO, mainly because of the Corona Virus Pandemic, to keep the band active in a period when nothing happened, had several versions of their recordings released, in addition to the VINYL format, also on TAPE AND CD, with versions in other countries such as RUSSIA, INDONESIA, COLOMBIA, SWEDEN and we also participated in some compilations, which was important to promote the band and also keep it alive in a period where nothing was happening. I think it's very important for music to be disseminated digitally, it's a way that can reach more people and in a cheaper and more democratic way, like for example YOUTUBE, but I will always love the physical format, nothing is more exciting than you having the material on hand, the booklet, the work with the cover and all these details that further enriches the sound itself.

Firstly congratulations on your latest EP album which has just been released this year, you guys are a great punk band, you play old school punk style, fast, continuous riffs, crazy drums and you even have some grindcore elements, the singer's vocals are low and powerful, what do you think of your new work? How does the new album compare to the old one?

Thanks! It was recorded in September 2023 at ESTUDIO CASA 39 and we made it available on the band's Bandcamp, but you can also find it on YouTube. It will have physical versions, it will be released on tape in December 2024 in Italy by FUTURE GLOOM RECORDS and the 7” vinyl version will be released in the United States by March 2025. The initial idea was to be a 12” LP, but we had (many) setbacks and at the time my first child was born, which reduced our rehearsal time so we could create the songs and go into the studio for this release, so we opted to just record 6 sounds. It may be a bit cliché, but it's the recording that I liked the most, as we made some changes to the tuning of the guitar and bass pedals and RODRIGO from ESTUDIO CASA 39 knows what works best for us, this gave us the peace of mind we needed to make the recording, even in a short space of time. The difference I see in this EP compared to previous recordings is that in this recording the sounds are a little faster, not as rhythmic as before, which gave us a slightly more DISRUPT “style” this time, more crust than the traditional d- beat, and we really liked the result and will probably follow this path in the future.


V: 你们参加过哪些音乐节?哪些音乐节给你们留下了深刻印象?能描述一下气氛吗?2025年你们还计划参加哪些音乐节?


What festivals have you guys been to? What festivals have impressed you? Can you describe the atmosphere, and what other festivals are you planning to attend in 2025?

We don't play many gigs, because in addition to our jobs (the guitarist works in the health sector, which means he has some crazy hours), all the band members have other musical projects (except me!), which means that We have to manage our gig commitments well, but we have already played with several bands from other states in Brazil, as well as playing with bands from other countries such as Sweden (Contorture and Vicious Irene), Finland (Rattus and Terveet Kädet), Belgium (Hiatus), etc. At the end of last year we played at a Festival called HARDCORE BEER FEST where there were bands with different musical styles and it was challenging and at the same time it was really cool, because people who would hardly have had contact with our musical style were able to meet us and I believe that was very good for us, it was a really cool festival and if we had been more “closed” minded we would have missed the opportunity for other people to get to know us, as well as playing at a Festival with such a cool atmosphere! For 2025 we still have few gigs scheduled, as we had a change of drummer and he only had 3 rehearsals to be able to play with two Swedish bands that are on tour in Brazil and we will give priority first for him to rehearse our set and also help us with new compositions , so our priority is to have a better rapport before booking more gigs


V: 你计划在2025年有什么新作品?比如继续写和录制一些新歌,你能透露一些给乐队的信息吗?


What new work do you have coming up in 2025? Like continuing to write and record some new songs, can you reveal some information to the group?

We recently had a change of drummer and we are now focusing on rehearsing for gigs that we will have in the future and also taking advantage of all the excitement that this new member has to compose new sounds. We have planned for this year a split with the Brazilian d-beat punk band ODIÄR and probably a split with another band from Sweden that is about to be confirmed. This year we also aim to compose and record to release our first LP in 2026.
