今天采访到的是来自葡萄牙的Death / Doom Metal乐队Blood of Artemis,组建于2016年的Blood of Artemis乐队由Melkor一个人组建,组建之后Melkor并没有马上发行专辑,而是在2024年才发行了第一张正式专辑“All Hope Is Broken”,一张精彩的作品由此诞生,虽然专辑只有四首歌曲,但是每首歌曲都是Melkor精心创作的,阴暗,凄凉的氛围,缓慢沉重的Riff,仿佛所有人参加了一场葬礼一样,其中一些Death Maetal的段落又让整张专辑非常的凶狠,残暴,在前不久杂志与乐队的创始人Melkor取得联系进行了一次专访!

The band I interviewed today is Blood of Artemis, a Death/Doom Metal band from Portugal. Founded in 2016, Blood of Artemis was formed by Melkor alone. After their formation, Melkor did not immediately release an album, but only released their first official album "All Hope Is Broken" in 2024. A wonderful work was born from this. Although the album only has four songs, each song is carefully created by Melkor. The dark and desolate atmosphere, slow and heavy Riff, as if everyone was attending a funeral, some of the Death Maetal paragraphs make the entire album very vicious and brutal. Hello Melkor we meet again, this time I'm going to interview you about the band Blood of Artemis which you formed in 2016, how did you form this band?

Hello, it's great to be here again. Blood of Artemis was born during a major turning point in my life back in 2016. It was a difficult time, both emotionally and personally, and I felt the need to channel all that into something different. I wanted to explore new sonic landscapes, step outside the boundaries of my usual extreme metal work, and express pain, vulnerability, and reflection through a more atmospheric and melancholic approach. Blood of Artemis became that outlet.

Can you describe the creative process of this band?

The creative process for Blood of Artemis began with the guitars, bass, and drums, forming the emotional backbone of the songs. After building that core, I felt the need to add atmospheric textures, so the keyboards came next, helping shape the ambiance without overpowering the rawness of the instrumentation. From there, I focused on the lyrical side, which I wanted to be especially thoughtful and meaningful. That’s why I invited different writers to contribute, each with their own "voice" and emotional perspective that connected with the music on a deep level. When working on the first track, “All Hope Is Broken,” I felt the intro, just acoustic at that point, lacked something. I didn’t want to add more keyboards, as I was aiming for a different kind of emotional intensity. That’s when I invited Pedro D-Void, a great friend and an amazing guitarist, to contribute a lead guitar part for the intro. His solo brought exactly the depth and contrast I was looking for, adding soul without overcomplicating the arrangement. I had also invited other musicians to contribute in various ways, hoping to expand the sonic palette even further. Unfortunately, due to a major computer failure, much of that material was lost. It was a frustrating setback, but thankfully, I managed to recover the majority of what had already been recorded. Throughout the entire process, Rolando Barros played a key role, not only performing drums with his usual precision and power, but also working closely with me on mixing and mastering the album. His experience, dedication, and artistic sensibility were essential in shaping the final sound and bringing the whole project to life.

The recording of this album is excellent, I assume it was recorded in your own studio, can you describe the recording process for this album?

Yes, the entire album was recorded at my own studio, Studios 13. As I mentioned earlier, I started by recording the bass, rhythm guitars, and programming the drums and keyboards. Once the structure of each song was solid, I moved on to recording the vocals using the lyrics provided by the incredible writers who contributed to this project. Each voice session was carefully shaped to fit the emotional tone of the music. Pedro D-Void then visited my studio and recorded his solo for the opening track, it was a special moment that added something truly unique to the album. After everything else was in place, Rolando Barros came by and we recorded all the drums live together in my studio. His performance really elevated the whole thing. When it came to mixing, I handled the entire instrumental mix myself, with the exception of the drums. Rolando took care of mixing his own drum tracks, and once that was done, he sent them back to me. From there, I blended everything together, always in full agreement and constant communication with Rolando to make sure the final result reflected our shared vision. In the end, I took care of the mastering process to bring it all together. It was a very hands-on, organic experience from start to finish.

The album is still on your own label and it's still available digitally, I was wondering if there's any possibility of a CD version of the album in the future?

Absolutely, this is one of the albums I’d most like to see released physically. All Hope Is Broken holds deep personal significance for me, as it was created during a very intense and transformative period in my life. It reflects a lot of emotions that were raw and real at the time, and having it in a physical format would be a way to honor that moment and give the album the presence it truly deserves. I believe physical editions still carry a kind of magic, a sense of ritual and connection that digital releases can’t quite replicate. There's something about holding the artwork in your hands, reading the lyrics, and experiencing the album as a complete package that adds to its emotional impact. I’ve been thinking about doing a limited CD release with a carefully designed booklet that includes the lyrics, credits, and maybe even some reflections or notes from the writers who contributed. If the right opportunity or interest arises, especially from listeners who connect deeply with the music, I'll definitely consider bringing this one to life in a physical form.


V: 这个乐队有一个漂亮的Logo设计,还是你自己设计的?这张专辑的艺术品设计得非常明亮,这件艺术品也是你自己的作品吗?


This band has a beautiful logo design, or did you design it yourself? The album artwork is very brightly designed, is this artwork also your own work?

Thank you for the compliment on the logo! The logo for Blood of Artemis was actually designed by me. I wanted something that would really capture the essence of the band and its music, so I worked hard on creating a design that would stand out and reflect the intensity of the project. As for the album artwork, I designed it myself. At the time, I was experimenting with Photoshop, doing the best I could with the skills I had. The concept was to create something visually striking and emotionally intense that matched the atmosphere of the album. I used digital montages to piece everything together, creating a visual narrative that aligned with the themes of pain, loss, and the search for meaning that runs throughout the record. It was a challenge, but I really enjoyed putting it all together, and I’m happy with how it turned out. As for my personal logo (JM), that was created by my good friend Jorge Manuel Silva Santos. His design captured the personal side of my artistic identity and is something I’ve always been proud of.

What are your musical themes about, why did you choose them and what do you want to express through them? You also created a lyrics section, what inspired these lyrics?

The musical themes of Blood of Artemis are deeply rooted in personal experiences, emotional turmoil, and a sense of existential reflection. The album deals with pain, loss, the search for meaning, and the complex emotions that arise from those struggles. It’s not just about confronting dark feelings; it’s about channeling them into something that can resonate with others who might be going through similar experiences. Each song explores a different facet of these themes. "All Hope Is Broken" represents a moment of despair and the loss of hope, yet it also hints at an underlying yearning for something beyond the darkness. "Now I Know" delves into the anguish and loneliness that comes after losing someone, the realization of suffering, and the harsh truths that follow. "Is Not Fair" grapples with the unfairness of life, loss, and the confusion that comes with unanswered questions. These themes come from real emotions, struggles, and moments in my life that I felt needed to be expressed. As for the lyrics section, I wanted to create a space where listeners could connect more deeply with the meaning behind each song. The decision to invite different writers to contribute was an important one because I wanted to bring in diverse perspectives. Filipe Nunes, Nuno Silva, and SQ each brought their own unique voice to the songs, allowing me to explore different angles of the emotions I wanted to convey. Their words gave me a new depth in expressing what I was feeling at the time, and that collaboration made the album richer and more emotionally complex. Through these lyrics, I wanted to invite listeners into a journey through darkness and vulnerability. It’s not just about the music itself, but about creating an experience that speaks to the heart and soul, and perhaps offers a sense of catharsis or understanding for anyone who has faced similar emotional battles. Rute Oliveira also played a key role by reviewing the lyrics, ensuring they conveyed the intended depth and meaning with clarity.

The band formed in 2016, but the first official album wasn’t released until 2024 due to a combination of factors that made the process take much longer than I had anticipated. One of the main reasons was the lack of time on my part, as I was juggling other projects and personal commitments. Another significant setback was the loss of some crucial information when my computer crashed, which set things back quite a bit. I also faced the challenge of recovering all that data, which was time-consuming and frustrating. Despite all these obstacles, in 2024, Rolando Barros reached out to me and asked if I still had the recordings. He insisted that we finish the album, which turned out to be a turning point for me. At that point, I had almost lost hope and was feeling discouraged about returning to the project. I had essentially put it on the back burner, but thanks to Rolando's push, I found the motivation to finish it. The album was nearly complete, and his encouragement helped me regain the drive to wrap it all up and finally release it. I’m very glad we were able to bring it to life in 2024.

Creating this album was a very personal journey for me, and it’s great to hear that the atmosphere and emotions I wanted to convey came through in the music. Do you have any new work coming up in 2025? Can you reveal some information to the group?

Yes, I’ve been thinking about it recently. I’m definitely looking forward to what’s next in 2025. The motivation is there, and now I’m just waiting for the right inspiration to strike. I want to continue exploring the same themes and concepts that have driven my work, particularly around emotional struggles, existential reflections, and the human experience. However, this time, I plan to take it a step further by incorporating the advancements in technology and the knowledge I’ve gained in terms of recording, mixing, and mastering. I feel like I’ve evolved in my approach to capturing sound and creating atmosphere, and I’m excited to apply that to new material. There’s a lot more I want to experiment with, and I’m eager to see where it takes me. Keep an eye out, because I believe 2025 will bring something even more refined and impactful.
