今天采访到的是来自意大利的Heavy Metal乐队Metal Detektor，组建于2000年的Metal Detektor今年迎来了他们组建25周年的纪念日，在25周年纪念日之际乐队也发表了他们的最新单曲“Shadowrunner”，最初乐队由歌手J.P. Hell和吉他手Magnitudo Max组建，最初乐队翻唱一些Saxon, Judas Priest与Manowar乐队的作品，在经过一些翻唱作品的洗礼之后乐队开始创作自己的原创作品，2002年乐队发行了第一张Demo作品“Detecting Metal”，得到意大利歌迷的认可，在经过乐队长时间的创作之后乐队在2008年自己发行了第一张正式专辑“H.O.T. Today's interview was with Heavy Metal band Metal Detektor from Italy. Metal Detektor, formed in 2000, celebrated their 25th anniversary this year. On the occasion of their 25th anniversary, the band also released their latest single "Shadowrunner". Originally formed by singer J.P. Hell and guitarist Magnitudo Max, the band covered some of Saxon, Judas Priest, and Manowar's works. After being baptized by some cover works, the band began to create their own original works. In 2002, the band released their first demo work "Detecting Metal", which was recognized by Italian fans. After a long period of creation by the band, the band began to create their own original works in 2008. In the year, he released his first official album "H.O.T. (Hold On Tight)", This work, which lasts for more than 50 minutes, perfectly showcases the superb skills and perfect coordination of the band members. After the release of this album, the band has become a very important band in Italy and has also been invited to participate as important guests in various music festivals. In 2020, Metal Detektor, after many years, collaborated with Volcano Records&Promotion to release their second official album "The Battle of Daytona". Although it has been many years, the band members still maintain their efficient creative energy and dedicate a more exciting work to everyone. In 2025, the band released their latest single "Shadowrunner", which is also released by Rude Awakening Records in Italy. Hello brother, thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think this is the first time your band has accepted an interview from a Chinese magazine. First of all, let me say hello to all Chinese fans and friends. Metal Detektor band was formed in 2000 and is a long established band with a long history. Who proposed the formation of this band?

We started as a group of close friends united by our love for heavy metal. We would gather to play covers of bands like Saxon, Judas Priest, and Manowar—those were our heroes. Most of us had already played in underground bands in the local scene, so we had experience and fire. The band’s creation was led by J.P. Hell (vocals) and Magnitudo Max (guitars), the original masterminds behind Metal Detektor. But we truly became a band after we wrote our first original songs. We played them live, and the crowd reaction was so strong that we realized we had something real. That’s when we shifted from friends jamming to musicians with a purpose. We rehearsed in the legendary Cripta Studios, one of the wildest craziest places in southern Italy—a fitting birthplace for a heavy metal band.

Have you ever changed band members in your band? Why did the first generation members leave the band? How did the new members join the band? Are you satisfied with the new member's job?

Yes—many changes happened over the years. This band has lived many lives. For example, Magnitudo Max switched between bass and guitar multiple times. Our original bass player, Marcus Blackfinger, who used to tape his index finger to stop it from bleeding during shows, left in 2004. Walter Ventura, our original drummer, stayed a bit longer but eventually stepped away from music for some years. I was there from day one—part of every chapter. Around 2006–2008, we had a new lineup and recorded an album, but personal differences emerged and the band split shortly after. That album received almost no promotion due to the timing. Years later, it was Walter and Max who reached out and brought the band back to life. They found new blood, a new lead guitarist, a new singer, and they asked me to start writing again. And that’s how we came back, stronger and more focused.

Each member of your band is an experienced musician in creating metal music. Can you introduce your creative process? I believe your creative experience will inspire many young musicians, and you are also about to release a new album. Is the creative process of the new album progressing smoothly?

Our songwriting always starts from a core concept or image. It might be something mythical, historical, or cinematic—like “Let’s write a song about a Mesoamerican volcano destroying everything in its path.” Once we have that vision, we start writing riffs and building the story around that. Everyone contributes ideas, and we don’t stop until the structure feels alive—like something with a pulse. For our upcoming album, the process has been intense and deeply rewarding. Compared to the past, our storytelling is sharper, and the songwriting is denser. We’re more focused and intentional now. Every riff, every word, serves the atmosphere and the message. Yes—it’s progressing smoothly, but not easily. We push ourselves hard, and that’s what keeps it real.

Every album of your band has excellent recording effects. Which studio did you record your albums in? Which producer made the album for you? Did the recording process of the new album go smoothly?

We recorded at KK Studios in Cosenza, Italy, with the talented Chris Copat, who also took care of the mixing and mastering at his setup in Bamberg, Germany. Chris is a one-man army—he has both the ear and the gear to make the sound punch exactly how we want it. We’ve always been very hands-on in the production process—we know what we want to hear, and Chris has been able to translate our raw power into a precise sonic form. The result is a sound that’s heavy, polished, but still organic. With "Violence and Pride", this collaboration reached a new level: it's our most complete and powerful album so far.

Metal, Bikes, this is your music theme. Your music theme is very interesting. Why did you choose this music theme? What do you want to express through this music theme? You also created the lyrics section, who created these lyrics? What does his inspiration come from?

We often played at bike shows and motorcycle events, and there’s a strong connection between metal culture and biker culture—both are about rebellion, identity, power, and freedom. It’s not just a theme for us—it’s part of the live energy we grew up in. The lyrics are written by myself, and I usually start from a clear concept or atmosphere—something visual or symbolic. The themes vary: from mythology to dystopian fantasy, from addiction and decay to inner strength and warrior spirit. But even with the bikes, the message goes deeper—it’s about riding through chaos, standing tall against the storm. That’s the real heart of it.

Your album artwork is also very creative in design, it's about racing cars and trucks. Who designed these album artworks for you? Your logo design is very simple, but personally I really like this design form because I can easily remember your name. Who designed this logo for you?

We’ve been lucky to work with some very talented young artists who helped translate our ideas into visual form. The original logo and the character Johnny the Madness were created by J.P. Hell and brought to life by a young illustrator, Mario Veltri, who gave the band its early visual identity. The more modern logo, used from 2008 onward, was designed by a local tattoo artist who brought a clean but bold approach—something easy to remember and instantly recognizable. Our album covers are crafted by Mirko Cozza, whose comic-inspired graphic style blends perfectly with our sound—explosive, narrative, and full of movement. We also agreed to put Johnny on every cover since our reunion!

You have collaborated with Volcano Records&Promotion and Rude Awakening Records to release albums. Rude Awakening Records has released this year's new album for you. Rude Awakening Records is my old friend, and I interviewed all the bands for them. They are also one of the outstanding labels in your country. How did you get in touch with these two labels to collaborate? Are you satisfied with the work of these two brands? Can you introduce Volcano Records&Promotion

We needed Volcano Records in 2021 to help us with our comeback album, "The Battle of Daytona". We were proud of the material, but after so many years out of the scene, we needed a label with visibility and strong promotional tools. So we did what bands should do: we knocked on every door. Volcano replied—and gave us a chance. Their network and energy helped us get back into the public eye. For "Violence and Pride", we felt it was time for a more focused, metal-dedicated label. That’s when we found Rude Awakening Records, and the connection was instant. Rude understands the old-school metal spirit. They don’t mass-produce albums—they curate legacies. They gave us the space and respect to shape the album the way we wanted. So yes—we’re satisfied with both labels. Volcano helped us reappear. Rude helped us redefine ourselves.

Your album release speed is very slow. After releasing your first demo in 2002, you only released your first official album in 2008 and your second official album in 2021. What is the reason for your slow creative speed?

After the 2008 album, the band split within weeks. I moved to Spain, and others weren’t getting along at the time. There was no drama—just distance, changes, and life moving in different directions. Everyone pursued their own goals. But about ten years later, it became clear that the fire hadn’t gone out. Walter and Max called me, and we knew—it was time to fight side by side again. That’s how we came back. So yes, our pace is slow—but that’s because we only release when it’s real. When the time is right. No pressure, no compromise. When Metal Detektor returns, it does so with purpose.

First of all, congratulations on the upcoming release of your third official album "Violence and Pride" this year. Your work is so wonderful, with beautiful melodies, powerful and aggressive Riff, and complex arrangements. The combination of guitar and drummer is excellent, and the clean and powerful singing of the singer is also a highlight of your album. What is your opinion on your own work? Is there any change between the new album and the old album?

"Violence and Pride" is the darkest, smartest, and most powerful thing we’ve done. The riffs are still aggressive, the melodies are still there—but now there’s more intention behind every note. Our storytelling is deeper, the messages more ominous, reflecting the world around us and within us. The youthful fire is still there, but now it burns with more focus and less naivety. The songs deal with heavier themes, and the music carries that weight. The connection between guitar and drums is sharper, the arrangements more intricate. And vocally, the album delivers clarity and force—not just in power, but in meaning. It’s still 100% Metal Detektor, just wiser, meaner, and hungrier.

V: 作为一支经典的老乐队，你们乐队参加了许多音乐节。哪些音乐节给你留下了深刻的印象？你能介绍一下当时的现场气氛吗？2025年还有其他音乐节邀请你参加吗？

As a classic old band, your band has participated in many music festivals. Which music festivals have left a deep impression on you? Can you introduce the live atmosphere at that time? Are there any other music festivals in 2025 that invite you to participate?

M: 两个节日在我们心中留下了深刻的印记：Calabrian Metal Inferno与Dog Soldiers.

Two festivals left a deep mark on our hearts: Calabrian Metal Inferno and Dog Soldiers.

Calabrian Metal Inferno was a battlefield of sound and sweat—an underground celebration of everything that makes heavy metal pure, loud, and alive. The crowd was relentless, the energy unstoppable. Playing there was like being plugged directly into the lifeblood of the southern metal scene. The noise, the heat, the adrenaline—you never forget that kind of communion.

Dog Soldiers is a biker festival in southern Italy, and it perfectly captures the spirit of the road that lives in our music. Leather, engines, beer, and metal—it’s a dangerous mix, and we love it. The connection with the crowd was primal. You don’t just perform—you become part of a roaring machine, one riff at a time.

As for 2025, we’re in touch with some festivals and promoters, but there’s nothing we can officially announce yet. What we can promise is that we’re ready to bring "Violence and Pride" to the stage, full throttle. No filters, no tricks—just pure metal energy. Festival organizers out there: we’re loud, real, and ready.
