Today's interview is with Përl, a post metal band from France. This band, founded in 2008, consists of drummer Thibault, bassist Bastien, and lead vocalist and guitarist Aline. Their music combines the vastness and grandeur of post metal with delicate and subtle expressions. At the same time, you can feel the influence of French literature from Përl's lyrics - the delicate and poetic French lyrics of lead singer and songwriter Aline make the emotions in Përl's music more layered. On October 24, 2025, Përl will release their new full-length album "Architecture du Vertige". Before the album was released, Volcano Magazine contacted the members of Përl and conducted this exclusive interview!

Bonjour! Thank you so much for joining us for this interview with Volcano Magazine. This is your first time being interviewed by a metal magazine from China, correct?

Yes, it's the first time. And thank you for being the first!


V: Përl成立于2008年,可以请你们先介绍一下乐队的历史吗?乐队的成员们是怎么认识的?是什么原因让你们组成了Përl?


Përl was founded in 2008. Could you first tell us about the band's history? How did the members meet? What led you to form Përl?


B: 我和Thibault曾在高中时期共同参与一支Prog Metal乐队,当那支乐队解散后,我们决定继续合作,我便从吉他手转为贝斯手。当时我们想尝试更偏向摇滚/金属的音乐风格,后来在网上发布招募信息后,Aline应征加入担任吉他手。她提到在之前的乐队里也做过些演唱工作...由于我们三人的化学反应非常契合,她立刻获得了主唱的额外职位。乐队就这样诞生了!


I was playing in a high school prog metal band with Thibault, and when the band stopped we decided to continue together, with me switching from guitar to bass. The idea was to play a more rock/metal music, and Aline applied as a guitarist after we posted an ads online. She mentionned that she was doing a bit of singing in her previous band... And she immediately got an extra position as singer as the alchemy between the 3 of us worked really great. This is how the band started!


V: 乐队平时是怎样互相合作的?在音乐创作方面和歌词的创作方面,平时你们会怎样记录你们的灵感?


How does the band collaborate on a daily basis? When it comes to music composition and lyric writing, how do you typically document your inspirations?


T: 歌曲创作通常发生在乐手即兴合奏的过程中。一首歌可能始于吉他即兴段落、鼓点节奏……每个人都贡献创意并相互影响。至于歌词创作,Aline负责填词。通常先有音乐,再由Aline构思歌词主题。


Songwriting usually happens during jam sessions between the musicians. A song might start with a guitar riff, a drum pattern... Everyone contributes something and everyone influences each other. When it comes to writing lyrics, Aline writes the words. The music usually comes first, then Aline comes up with a concept for the lyrics.

V: 你们的歌词都是法语,而且像诗歌一样非常优美。我想请问一下在歌词创作方面对你们影响最大的有哪些法国文学作家或者法国乐队/音乐家?


Your lyrics are most in French and they are beautifully poetic. I'd like to ask: which French literary authors or French bands/musicians have had the greatest influence on your lyric writing?


A: 文学方面的影响难以尽数,但在Përl乐队中,我认为主要受到路易·阿拉贡、齐奥朗、勒内·夏尔、阿尔贝·加缪等人的深刻影响... 这些诗人与作家赋予每个词汇磅礴的力量,仅凭一句诗或一个句子便能撼动人心。我偏爱强烈的视觉意象;那些无法触动我心弦的事物,通常难以引起我的兴趣。至于音乐人或乐队,我的歌词创作受到多元影响。法国经典歌谣如Barbara的作品极具美感, Zazie等歌手亦然。但我们正见证着法国歌曲的现代化进程——Zaho de Sagazan等艺术家创作的作品同样引人入胜。摇滚与金属领域中,Placebo、Opeth、Hypno5e等乐队对我们的影响都有一席之地。最后,Massive Attack也对我们有很深影响。


For literature, there are too many to mention, but in Përl, I think my major influences are Louis Aragon, Cioran, René Char, Albert Camus... These are poets and writers who place colossal power in every word. A verse or a sentence is enough for them to move you. I like strong visions ; what doesnt trouble me, generally, interests me little. For musicians or bands, I would say that my influences for lyrics are very varied. Some classics of French song like Barbara are very beautiful, as are singers like Zazie. But I find were also witnessing a modernization of French song, which is not uninteresting, with artists like Zaho de Sagazan. In rock or metal, clearly, bands like Placebo, Opeth, and Hypno5e have their place. Finally, another major influence for their commitment: Massive Attack.


V: 2025年10月24日你们即将发行新专辑"Architecture du Vertige",这是你们的第四张专辑,和之前的专辑相比,这张专辑和Përl过往的音乐中没有尝试过的新方向吗?


On October 24, 2025, you will release your new album Architecture du Vertige, your fourth album. Compared to your previous albums, does this album explore new directions that Përl hasn't attempted in its past music?


T: 首先,我们对自身音乐能力更有信心了,这让我们敢于尝试新事物。比如鼓和贝斯部分有几处是在录音室即兴创作的,那是现场捕捉的瞬间。虽然只占专辑创作很小一部分,但这些即兴时刻确实存在。其次,我们乐于尝试创新,每张专辑都会呈现前所未有的元素。Aline在人声方面注入了新意,尤其她大幅提升的清亮唱腔。我则加入了更多打击乐器,如钢片琴和发条盒。新专辑如同开启新旅程的契机,在坚守音乐本色的前提下,我们允许自己大胆实验。


First of all, we have a little more confidence in our musical abilities, which allows us to try new things. For example, there are a few parts on the drums and bass that were improvised inthe studio during recording. It was a moment captured live. It's only a very small part of the album's composition, but those moments happened. Secondly, we like to experiment, and on each album you'll find things that weren't necessarily there before. Aline has brought new things to the vocals, particularly her clear singing, which she has developed a lot. I've added more percussion instruments, such as a glockenspiel and a spring drum. A new album is an opportunity to embark on a new journey, so without betraying our identity, we can allow ourselves to experiment.


V: 你们发布了新专辑中歌曲"Naufragée des nuages"的MV,我非常喜欢这个MV,开场的嘶吼令人震撼,接下来的说唱部分同样让人非常惊喜,一切融合地非常自然,即使听不懂法语也能从你们的音乐中感受到强烈的情感。可以分享一下这是歌曲的创作过程吗?


You've released the music video for “Naufragée des nuages” from your new album, and I absolutely love it. The opening is utterly breathtaking, and the rap section that follows is equally surprising. Everything blends together so naturally—even without understanding French, the intense emotion in your music comes through powerfully. Could you share a bit about the song's creative process?


A: "Naufragée des nuages"这首歌描绘的是彻底幻灭的状态,当周遭崩塌而你失去立足点时,汹涌的情绪将你淹没直至窒息沉沦。创作这首歌时我正经历人生低谷,感觉所有支柱都在崩塌——当你坚信的一切、托付的全部都化为乌有。我运用了多种演唱技巧,既要通过饱满的声线展现幻灭的磅礴力量与冲击,又要借助更具冲击力的演唱方式,呈现那种令人眩晕的紧迫感——它在你体内盘踞,加速着你当下的思绪。最后,抒情性的演唱部分则以饱满的旋律感,为整首歌带来终章般的收束。


Naufragée des nuages is a song about deep disillusionment, when everything collapses around you and you lose your footing. Its the emotions that overwhelm you and flood you until you sink, suffocate. Its a song I wrote when I was going through a difficult time where I felt like all my pillars were crumbling. When everything you believe in, everything you place your trust in, crumbles. I used various vocal techniques because I needed to express both this power and the strong impact of disillusionment through saturated singing, this kind of dizzying urgency that inhabits you and accelerates your thoughts in those moments with the more slam side. Finally, the lyricism, the more sung aspect, gives a kind of finale with body and melody.

V: 为什么会选择给歌曲"Architecture du Vertige"制作MV?接下来还会有其他来自新专辑中的歌曲MV发布吗?


Why did you choose to create a music video for the song “Architecture du Vertige”? Will there be other music videos released for songs from the new album?


B: 我们曾为这支MV在多首歌曲间犹豫不决。可以说"Naufragée des Nuages""Le chute"和"Arcipelago三首歌的竞争相当激烈。经过朋友和同事的反馈后,"Naufragée des Nuages"最终脱颖而出!此外,从一开始我们就确定"Fjara"必须拥有专属视频(更准确地说是一支歌词视频)!


We hesitated between several songs for this music video. I would say that it was quite tight between 3 of them (Naufragée des Nuages, Le chute and Arcipelago). After feedbacks from friends and colleagues, Naufragée was finally chosen! Also, from the beginning, we knew that the cover of Fjara has to get her own video (a lyrics video, more precisely)!


V: 新专辑的封面很有意思,天空的部分是海洋,而地面的部分是山尖。这也非常符合你们新专辑的名字。请问新专辑为何命名为"Architecture du Vertige"?这个名字有哪些背景故事可以告诉我们吗?


The cover art for your new album is quite intriguing—the sky portion depicts the ocean, while the ground portion shows mountain peaks. This perfectly aligns with the album's title. Could you explain why you named it “Architecture du Vertige”? What's the background story behind this title?


A: 这个专辑名旨在展现眩晕的多重维度。人们通常联想到令人焦虑的眩晕感,那种坠入虚空的失重体验。但在我看来,眩晕的内涵远不止于此。有爱情的眩晕——当你深陷爱河时怦然心动,那种强烈得近乎痛苦的爱恋;有坠落的眩晕——象征着我们坠入的深渊;还有内在的不适感,无论是精神还是身体上的,当我们说“我感到头晕”时,其实是在表达某种不安。情感本就令人眩晕。然而我们正是由情感构筑而成。我深信人类的情感架构,正是由这些眩晕的构造所堆砌。这正是我在这张专辑中想要表达的:一场旅程,一场在我们眩晕的架构中展开的内心探索。


With this title, I wanted to show the different possible aspects of vertigo. We naturally think of vertigo, which makes us anxious, drawing us into this plunge into the void, but vertigo, in my opinion, can apply to many other things. You have the vertigo of love, that heart that beats when you love, love so strong its almost painful. You also have vertigo in that it embodies a fall, that which we fall into, vertigo also as an inner discomfort, mental or physical, when we say « I feel dizzy » which translates a form of unease. Emotions are dizzying in general. Yet, we are built of emotions. I truly feel that our emotional human architecture is made of these constructions of vertigo. This is what I wanted to express in this album: a journey, an inner quest within our vertiginous architecture.


V: 我注意到你们的新专辑将由著名的瑞典制作人Magnus Lindberg进行母带处理。你们的之前的专辑也都可以看到他的名字,是什么让你们选择长期与Magnus Lindberg一起合作呢?


I see that your new album will be mastered by renowned Swedish producer Magnus Lindberg. His name has appeared on all your previous albums as well. What led you to choose to collaborate with Magnus Lindberg long-term?


T: 实际上,负责专辑录音和混音的Etienne Sarthou是法瑞混血,他经常与Magnus Lindberg在母带处理领域合作。两人之间的协作非常默契。在首张专辑"R(a)ve"(2013)时期,我们尚未与Etienne合作,但早已被他母带处理的作品所折服。当我们提出合作请求时,他迅速给予回应。Etienne与Magnus常有合作实属美妙巧合!尽管艾蒂安曾推荐其他母带工程师尝试不同风格,我们最终始终选择与Magnus合作。


In fact, Etienne Sarthou, who recorded and mixed the album, is French-Swedish and often works with Magnus Lindberg on mastering. It's a collaboration that works well between the two of them. On our first album, R(a)ve (2013), we weren't working with Etienne yet, but we had been impressed by a few productions that he had mastered. He responded very quickly to our request to work with him. It's a happy coincidence that Etienne and Magnus often work together! Even though Etienne has suggested other people to try out different mastering styles, we've always ended up sticking with Magnus.

V: 你们曾在2024年的Hellfest的舞台上演出。这是你们第一次在Hellfest演出吗?在法国最大的金属音乐节上的演出体验如何?


You performed on the stage at Hellfest in 2024. Was this your first time playing at Hellfest? How was the experience of performing at France's biggest metal music festival?


T: 没错,这是我们首次登上这个传奇音乐节的舞台。体验简直太棒了!首先场地规模宏大,观众人数众多,技术团队、志愿者和参演艺人数量庞大,舞台也极为宽阔。我们不太习惯这种规格的场地,所以站在Hellfest舞台上感觉有些超现实。但观众给予了我们热烈的欢迎。我们一登台就感受到观众的狂热欢呼。虽然上午10点半开演时遭遇降雨,现场观众人数未达预期,但到场的乐迷都为我们而来,热情高涨!在如此盛大的音乐节上看到观众跟着唱你的歌词,简直是种魔幻体验!更惊喜的是遇见心仪的音乐家——比如Chelsea Wolfe,演出结束后她用了我们的休息室(乐队休息室是轮换制的),而且她和我们同台演出过。能在这个音乐节表演真是太美妙的回忆了!


Yes, that's right, it was the first time we had performed at this legendary festival. And it was incredible! First of all, the site is huge, there's a huge audience, lots of technical crews, volunteers, lots of artists, and the stages are huge too. We're not really used to this kind of venue, so being at Hellfest felt a bit surreal. But the audience gave us an incredible welcome. As soon as we came on stage, we could feel that the audience was really excited, cheering us on. We played at 10:30 in the morning and unfortunately in the rain, so we didn't have as many people as we had hoped, but the audience that was there was really there for us and very, very enthusiastic! When you see people singing the lyrics to your songs at this big festival, it's magical! And then you meet musicians you love, like Chelsea Wolfe, who took our dressing room afterwards (there's a turnover between artists for the dressing rooms) and who played on the same stage as us. What a wonderful memory to have been able to play at this festival!


V: "Architecture du Vertige"专辑发行后Përl有哪些计划?你们计划怎样宣传这张新专辑?


What are Përl's plans following the release of the album Architecture du Vertige? How do you plan to promote this new album?


B: 我们为筹备新演出投入了大量心血,不仅融入了新歌,更试图通过舞台服装、灯光设计和表演来呈现专辑的独特世界观。我们希望能尽可能多地通过现场演出来诠释这张专辑!


We worked quite hard in preparing a new show including the new songs, by trying as well to introduce the album universe inside our costumes, light show and acting on stage. We hope to be able to defend it as much as possible on stage!

We are always so surprised to be able to touch listeners even if they are not able to understand our language. We tend to put a huge effort on the lyrics, but seeing that the music alone is able to convey our emotions is so great. Also, thanks a lot for the time you spent for us!!
