Evoking Winds is a folk/atmospheric black metal online project initiated by Artyom Prishchepov in 2005. So far, it has released 8 full-length albums. However, although the band members have been continuously creating music for 20 years, they didn't start uploading their music on streaming platforms until 2021. Therefore, most of us believe that the band began creating music in 2021. The works of Evoking Winds are filled with myths, atmosphere, and beautiful ethnic instruments, creating an epic and legendary atmosphere. This might be the unique grandeur and epic of Belarus. Unfortunately, the band disbanded in 2025, and we have invited Artyom Prishchepov to do an interview with us this time.

采访对象:Artyom Prishchepov(Evoking Winds乐队主创)

Hello, Artyom, thank you for accepting this interview. I think this is the first time you communicate with Chinese fans. So first of all, could you introduce yourself and your band Evoking Winds. When did it form and how did you come together?
Hello, and thank you so much for the invitation! It’s a real pleasure to greet listeners in China for the first time. My name is Artyom Prishchepov, I’m a composer, originally from Belarus, and for the last twenty years I’ve been exploring how folklore, metal, and cinematic soundscapes can merge into one. Evoking Winds was born back in 2005 among a group of friends who were passionate about black and folk metal. We were scattered across different cities, even countries, but connected through the same love for legends and heavy music.

Since Evoking Winds is an online band, do you think there are certain difficulties in communication among the musicians? And do you feel that this collaborative model has affected your creative process?
Fun fact: during two decades of collaboration we never met in person. I even don't know how the vocalist Alexander who sang on many of our records talks in real life. We never bothered to call each other - it's mostly text exchange on Slack messenger for the time being. But in some ways, that’s the beauty of it. Each of us works when inspiration strikes, and then we pass the material along. We don't have to rehearse and prepare ourselves for tours, so it allows more time for reflection and material polishing. Instead of forcing ideas, we sculpt them. I would say this model allows out to throw out everything unnecessary from the record: it usually takes some time to sink and think.

Many of your lyrics draw on Eastern European folk tales. Why did you decide to create music around this theme? Could you give an example and talk about the story in the music?
Folklore has always been my deepest source of inspiration. These tales are codes of memory, fears, and hopes of generations. For example, our song Bald Mountain is rooted in Slavic mythology, where the mountain is seen as a place of both fear and fascination, inhabited by witches and spirits. In the music, we tried to capture that duality: temptation and danger, beauty and terror walking hand in hand.
When making an album, do you usually first define a theme and then create music around it, or do you create the music first and then select a theme for it later?
For me, the theme always comes first. I’m very much a “conceptual” composer, every album is like a little world. Once I know what story I want to tell, the music follows. The melodies, harmonies, and even instrumentation are chosen to serve the atmosphere of that particular theme.

Evoking Winds was founded in 2005, but initially, it only released a simple EP. It wasn’t until 2021 that you started creating music on a large scale. During those more than ten years, were you still engaged in music creation? And what opportunity led you to revive the Evoking Winds project?
我们在2008年完成了"Towards Homestead",2013年有了"Silent Dawn",2015年有了"Conjunction of Spheres",2019年有了"The Heroes"。
Evoking Winds was a hobby project with small number of physical ("for friends" cd and tape releases). We had Towards Homestead finished in 2008, Silent Dawn in 2013, Conjunction of Spheres in 2015 and The Heroes in 2019. Then it was 2021, when I figured out the way to publish it on streaming platforms, mastered it a bit for iTunes requirements and released all of them one after another during one year timeframe. So in terms of our music writing it was gradual non-stop process, rather than pause and blast. The release pace is source of confusion, but it's 2025 now and it doesn't matter for us what numbers are on our records, what is past, is gone.
From 2021 to the present, do you think the band’s music has undergone any changes?
A: 肯定。
Definitely. The early works were more of shoegazing - I liked to process sound a lot. My goal was creating the sound that you can see from the far, rather than listening on the concert - thus I guided the production and mixing this way. At some point it has become boring for us to produce in the same sound, so since 2022 or so we’ve embraced more symphonic and cinematic elements, sometimes bordering on soundtrack-like. Also we expanded the palette of folklore instruments and singings to make it more interesting to play and record.

You have released 8 full-length albums, yet none of them are physical releases. Could you talk about the reason for this? Do you currently have any plans to collaborate with a record label to release CDs?
There are two components here: habits and hobby mode. Speaking of habits, in post-soviet regions we don't have big nostalgia towards CDs or Vinyls. It's simple - back in the days of these formats being relevant, original discs were damn expensive here. So in the pre-streaming era, the music here was mainly distributed through torrents and CD-Rs with mp3 discographies. When streaming has come here, it was cheap enough to use it - and physical formats disappeared. There is very small audience who has vinyl or cd players here, and most of us listen to music via Youtube, Spotify and Apple music. Speaking about the hobby mode, music for me and my mates is something to clear our heads after work. We want to keep it this way: no labels, no physical releases, contracts, marketing, tours etc etc. I run large software enterprise in my other life and it's enough of the headache to manage. Music making is something to relax and not bother for us.
Evoking Winds has released 8 albums in five years. For yourself personally, which one is your favorite?
A: 这绝对是"Your Rivers"。
It will be definitely Your Rivers. It took me 4 years to write it, and 1 more year to record and produce with the guys. I would say this album is Evoking Winds' main message, the reason this project existed. It raises very personal lessons I got from pain, loss and endurance. Although it's placed in the Witcher universe, it tells the real life stories of longing to find your own place in this world. The album crystallises everything I wanted Evoking Winds to be: folklore, atmosphere, stormy blast beats and beauty woven together.

Cân Bardd?
Do you think your music creation has been influenced by any other bands, such as Saor or Cân Bardd?
I would say it was influenced by many bands: Moonsorrow, Enslaved, Paul Anthony Romero, Graveworm, Agathodaimon, Catamenia and many more projects in different genres from melodic black metal, to viking metal and orchestral fantasy music. But indeed, I admire Saor, Cân Bardd, and many others who work with landscapes and myths through metal.
Evoking Winds disbanded not long ago, but I saw on your official website that you are about to launch a new project. Would you be interested in introducing this new project? What connection does it have with Evoking Winds?
Clockwork Aphrodite "——这是一部发生在维多利亚晚期伦敦的Gothic Black Metal作品,受到了夏洛克·福尔摩斯小说的大量影响,还带有一点Steampunk元素。"
Yes, after almost twenty years and release of Your Rivers, it felt like the right time to close the Evoking Winds chapter. But oh, it's a bunch of projects with the same people. Here are some of them: Black Brass Reverie - is post black metal fused with dark jazz, telling the stories of strangers travelling together on by ship and drinking whisky in the bar. Quintessence of solitude, noir atmosphere and middle-life crisis. Clockwork Aphrodite - is a gothic black metal happening in the setting of late-victorian London, with a lot of influence from Sherlock Holmes prose and a little bit of steampunk. The Witcher's Brew - is my dungeon synth project, continuing the Witcher themes in a more relaxed, funny atmosphere. The debut album "Don't Let Nekkers Steal Your Casio" is coming soon, featuring one of my favourite (and cheesy as hell) synths, Casio CZ-1.
Thank you for participating in this interview. I really love your music and am looking forward to your future works. Is there anything else you would like to say to everyone at the end of the interview?
Thank you so much. To our listeners in China - I’m truly honored that our music has reached you. Even though we live far apart, music allows us to share the same stories, emotions, and dreams. Please take care of yourselves, and may the winds of inspiration always be with you.
